MBP shutdown after 10.6.2 update is slower than before!

Hello all,
Since after 10.6.2 update, my MBP shutdown time extended from less than 5 secs to over 25 secs. I've gone through some solutions including resetting disk permissions using disk utility, setting the PRAM, using font explorer to clear fonts as suggested by a user that got his problem solved. No luck at the moment. Prior to 10.6.2 update my MBP used to shutdown in less than 5 secs. Although i bought a new usb modem called ZTE usb Modem (Model: K3565-Z) from my cellphone carrier Vodacom in South Africa. I mention this because on my Mac Mini, whenever i want to shutdown, i have to force quite this application before the Mac Mini (which is also running 10.6.2 update) shuts down fine under 5 secs. So am guessing the usb modem is the cause of the problem somehow but I can't find out how. If not then it must be with the 10.6.2 update.
Any help will be appreciated.

1.) Try resetting some of the hardware involved (PRAM~NVRAM). See this Apple KB for details, etc.:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
Can't hurt to try, and apparently this has helped others recently.
Failing that, take it to an Apple Store and ask staff there for assistance.
2.) Did you update via Software Update or did you download the combo? If you used Software Update, get the Combo updater instead and re-apply:

  • The wireless is getting slower than before updating to iOs 6!

after updating to iOs 6, i felt the wireless got slower than before, any solution? thx for ur help guys

Hi, the last install dvd that came out for mac's was Snow Leopard,10.6.3. Lion is a download from apple. You cannot just install it over Yosemite. You would have to backup your drive to save files you want and do a clean install. You might want to look into getting more memory. You can run 8 Gig"s of memory on your Macbook Pro.If your Macbook Pro is getting really slow you might want to download EtreCheck  and then post the results here.http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck  Check out this article.  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH19031

  • Is this normal for MBP 2007 after 10.5.7 update

    Hi,
Is it normal for the left side usb not to be able to power my external hardrive (western digital pocket drive) after the 10.5.7 update? The right side usb powers it fine (the side without the power adapter plugin). I am not sure if the left side ever had enough power to power the portable harddrive, I can not recall if I used it or if I have always used the right side. Any thoughts? thanks for any insights.

Hi Kappy, thank you for your response to my query. I talked to apple certified tech at local University earlier today and he said that not all usb ports on portables can power the drive, however, this didn't sound right. Because why would Apple only make one usb be able to power a drive. The drive I have is a western digital pocket drive with a single usb connector and it works fine from the right side of my computer but not from the left. I am past the warranty period and was hoping someone on here may know if the left side usb on a MBP 2.2 GHZ just can't power drives or is my usb port defective. It can recognize cameras and and also flash drives, but it does not have enough juice to power this drive. Anyways, thank you for your help.

  • MBP FREEZES AFTER 10.4.6 UPDATE WITH WINDOWS PARTITION

Just updated software to 10.4.6, and rebooted the computer unattended. It booted on the Windows partition, and worked fine.
Just rebooted in Mac mode, and everything froze.
Had to reinstall the OS, from the original DVD. Did anyone experience the same problem.
I am reluctant now to install the 10.4.6 update.
    Thanks for your comments

There always some people on the forum to believe they
are smarter and that others are dummies, and do not
    read instructions! That is bad.
I Should have been more specific: the software update
was the Mac OS Intel posted on the Apple website on
    May12.
The MBP was up to date before this update, and
    everyting was working fine.
    Hi Thierry,
I didn't really post to say I was smarter, or you were a dummy. When I read your post, and saw your signature that says you are running 10.4.5, I thought first of all, "how did you do that?" So I posted that that could be a huge problem.
Please don't think I wasn't anything more less than concerned. Noted you have been having issues (as others have) since the security update. There are numerous suggestions in other threads, but I don't know the solution to your situation. For me the update kiled my ability to change font color in Entourage! Hopefuly Apple will post a fix in the form of an update.

  • Mac hangs on shutdown after 10.5.3 update

    hey
ever since i updated to 10.5.3 every time i shut down my mac...it just hangs...so i have to keep the power button on the macbook pressed to force it to switch off.
also...i keep being asked to do some EFI Firmware update and i keep doing it...but it never seems to stick.
    any ideas?
    thanks in advance
    m8edy

I went through the same problem and go on the phone with apple after already running all of the disk utility repairs and pram reset. They then told me to unplug all power sources including the battery and hold down the power button for 15 sec (even harder reset)...that did not work. Then I was told to make a time machine backup and re-install osx (leopard) with an "erase and reinstall." I then took all necessities (photos, docs etc) from backup and put them on the computer, did another time machine backup (this one takes a long time b/c it is like the first time you turn on the computer). I then played around with some big apps and tried shutting down...it worked. This guarantees that there was a setting problem and not a hardware malfunction. I have now re-updated to 10.5.3 with the combo update and so far everything has been fine. If it is an application issue you can also do trial and error to figure out which one with your time machine backup. Reminder: when you do re-install calendars, email, address book etc. make sure to retrieve the application support file from the first time machine backup (it has all data in it) so you won't have to redo your databases which will be wiped when you do the re-install.

  • PB Hangs at shutdown after 10.5.8 update

I recently updated my OS to 10.5.8 from 10.5.2 Everything seemed fine... When I shut down the finder quits, everything disappears from the desktop, then it just hangs. I have to hold power button to get it to turn off.

Well, you guys have plenty of company. Every time an update is released, there's a chorus of groans from people who blame all their troubles on it. Usually, it turns out to be that they're running third-party software that hasn't been updated for compatibility with the update, and once they do that, everything is fine. So check all your third-party login items and System Preference panes and apply all available updates to them. Run the Repair Permissions and Repair Disk routines in Disk Utility. See whether these steps don't get your machines running right again.

  • Mac Book Pro doesn't boot (twice; after updating) and slow performance before these incidents

    Hi,
Maybe someone can help me resolving a (re) boot issue with my Mac Book Pro. Last few weeks I experienced a tremendous drop in performance (start-up as well as handling and using applications).
Yesterday I downloaded and installed  an app to clean stuff from the mac, such as binaries that aren't used, cache files, etc. It resulted in substantial better performance. Than, I used the updater on this application to update. This morning, the Mac wouldn't boot. After several attempts I used the old DVD with Mac OS X to re-install and boot. That worked.
Following this approach, I received two messages (that HP apps weren't secured or something and therefor disabled). Than I updated the Mac OS X and later this evening it asked me if I wanted to install some (4) other updates as well (don't know what updates these were). So I updated but now I am back at square one: My Mac doesn't boot. I do get the grey starting screen, but now even the 'apple' logo is missing.
Anyone else experiencing these problems and have any clues on how to fix it? By the way, I also tried to alter permissions on all files on the main hard drives (to ensure that I do not always have to sign off on updates and or changes of applications). Would that have caused problems?

You seem to have a lot going on here, so it's hard to know what's wrong. You likely had some underlying problems before doing the Software Update.
Here's a link that might help with the grey screen problem:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570
    Which app did you download?
If you can get booted up, check in the System Profiler to see that all of your RAM is recognized--if not, you may need to reseat one or both sticks.
If you can boot from your install disc, run the extended version of the Apple Hardware test to check for hardware problems. Freezing can be caused by a dying hard drive, which can also tend to corrupt software.
While booted from the install disc, navigate to Disk Utility and repair your boot disk. You can do this 2 or 3 times even if it says no problems found.
While in Disk Utility, check to see that the SMART status of your hard drive is verified. If not, you will need to replace the drive.
It probably wouldn't hurt to reinstall the OS.
Do you have a good, up to date backup? If not, it would be a good idea to make one as soon as you can, just to be on the safe side.
Have you tried a Safe Boot?

These are just a few ideas to get you started. Post back if you have more questions.
    Good luck!

  • Why after updating to iOS 5 does my application functions start up slower than before updating?

Why does my iPhone 3 seem to have slower reaction time ( starting up applications i.e. receiving and sending of sms , games apps etc) after updating to iSO 5?? Is there a update soon to correct this issue?? Friends also experience the same issue.

I guess we should ask Apple what their definition of "trickle charge" is, as that's the term the iPad manual uses - the  "iPad user guide for ios 5" manual I downloaded via iBooks after installing ios5.
My MacBook Pro is a 2008, Intel duo processor.
I agree, it would be helpful if Apple would define things better! I don't find the manuals they provide all that helpful, as a rule, and usually end up buying 3rd-party publications.
I can certainly understand your frustration.

  • After 10.5.7 update, extremely slow home sync

After updating the server to 10.5.7, the 'full' sync at login/logout has become extremely slow. On a sub-spec Leopard machine like a 500MHz G4 it actually took 30 minutes to log in because of slow syncing. On a MacBook (Core Duo) it takes 15 minutes. It takes long checking, it is very slow syncing, and finishing takes another 4-5 minutes.
On 10.5.6 it was OK. Both clients have been updated to 10.5.7 client. Multiple login/logouts do not change anything. Logging out (15min sync) and immediately logging in results in another 15min sync.
Most of the time seems spent syncing of Library/PubSub. It may be just 1.5MB or so, but it takes ages.
I am using server side file tracking.
Anything I can try to do to make this usable again?

I first removed syncing ~/Library/PubSub but this did not help too much.
I removed the contents of ~/.FileSync from clients (2) and server. Since the clients have FileVault home dirs that requires being logged in everywhere.
The old SQLite db in ~/.FileSync directory was 16MB, the new one 1.8MB. After that, I have seem an improved responsiveness. Still not something extremely fast, but good enough.
It would be good if there was some sort of 'reclaim' functionality in the SQLite db that underlies home syncing, just like there is for FileVaulted home directories.

  • After downloading the Firefox browser update "RadioWMPCoreGecko 5.dll" file my computer runs much slower than before. Ist there any help available?

Information by Norton Security, that ''RadioWMPCoreGecko 5.dll'' is safe. The installation started without any hesitation and -even worse - without asking my permission although my settings require this.

Here is a thread about a similar issue with RadioWMPGecko19.dll (no real answers)

  • HT5501 Somebody can tell me what is going on with the last update 10.8.2??I updated and since two days ago my computer is blocking with safari and is getting pretty much slower than before??

Can somebody tell me what is going on with the last update of Mountain Lion 10.8.2?? Since then my computer is pretty much slower and blocken on Safari.

First of all, why did you say yes to Nero Back up before researching what it does with files already on the HDD? When I install Nero, the Back Up is the first thing I disable, it is a nagging pain, there are much better backup programs available. There are several file recovery programs out there to recover deleted files, that is, if that is what happened. Also, if you haven't overwritten the files, so you should be able to find them.

  • After installing Lion, my iMac (early 2009) is slower than before

I installed OSX Lion and I noticed a severe drop in performances of my iMac 24" (early 2009), particularly when opening and closing applications.

  • Internet browser slow after 10.6.8 update - it is not the connection

I have just updated to OSX 10.6.8. After that Safari and Chrome seams to be very slow to access all kind of address. The network connection is ok and emails are coming at normal speed in outlook for Mac. Using speedtest.net I got a download rate of 11 Mbps but the pages seams to load very slower then before. Any Ideas on how to solve it? I have a mbp 13" 8Gb core i7

Have my early2009 iMac connected wirelessly to my
Airport Extreme and am having no slowdown in any internet
access with 10.6.8.  Service provider Comcast.
On my Mac, I have Configure IPv6 set to automatic.
I also have my Airport Extreme set up as the DNS server
for the network and allow it to receive the DNS from the ISP.
The Extreme is also the DHCP server.
On the extreme, wireless setup is:
       Radio mode: automatic
       Radio Channel selection: automatic
       Wireless security: WPA2 Personal
    guest access is disabled.
The extreme is configured via DHCP from the
    ISP through the cable modem.
Also IPv6 is set to link-local only.
Not sure if any of this information will be of help,
but at least with my set up there doesn't seem to be
    any issue.
PS.  Also, my 2011 13" BP i7 is also at 10.6.8 and am
having no internet speed issues over wireless.
