MBP shuts down after booting from a disc

How is everyone doing? I hope okay with their macs!
Well, if I boot from my MacBook Pro Install discs, the computer boots off of the discs.
But if I try booting off any media that I burned, the computer shuts down automatically.
What I do:
Put in the disc (I tried both DiskWarrior and Drive Genius 2),
hold down the C key,
the apple logo displays,
the discs starts to spin louder (like if it were to start reading it),
then the computer restarts after showing the spinning wheel for about half a second.
I thought that maybe it had to do with me adding a firmware password as requested by Orbicule's Undercover... so I removed the firmware password and I still got the same results.
Does anyone know why this is happening [to me]?
Any replies or comments are thanked in advance.

I found out why... its because I have the new macbook pro with the penryn processor.
Penryn processor's fault.
End of story.

mac shuts down after boot. Doesn't go beyond gray screen with apple.  Is it the logic board?
I do not have the start up disks to safe boot or check the hardware.
Any ideas what the problem is or is it junk?  It is 8 years old.

Shutdown your machine.  Hold down the shift key.  Poweron.  Wait awhile Wait awhile while you harddrive
    is being checked.

I'd let the machine sit for awhile in open firmware & see if it stays alive.  Do a few prints.
Sometimes if volumes don't appear in Startup Manager (what you get when you hold down the Option key at startup), you need to reset the Mac's PRAM, NVRAM, and Open Firmware. Shut down the Mac, then power it up, and before the screen lights up, quickly hold down the Command, Option, P, and R keys, until the Mac has chimed twice more after the powerup chime. Then, before the screen lights up, hold down Command-Option-O-F until the Open Firmware screen appears. Then enter these lines, pressing Return after each one:
    reset-nvram
    set-defaults
    reset-all
"The reset-all command should restart your Mac. If so, you have successfully reset the Open Firmware settings."

  • Iphone 4 shuts down after disconnecting from power cable

My iphone 4 completely shuts down after disconnecting from power cord. The screen goes blank. However, if I re-plug the power supply it turns on with the date and time changed but my battery status is 86%.

Reset, hold both Home and Power buttons for about 15 seconds until iPhone restarts. If everthing is OK, great. If not, connect to iTunes and try to Restore the Firmware. If still problems, make appointment with Apple Genius for Warranty service.

  • IBook shuts down after upgrading from 10.3.3 to 10.3.9

Hi...I tried upgrading an old iBook G3 700 MHz from OS X 10.3.3 to 10.3.9 (combo). Now it won't finish
starting up. I press power, I do hear the chime and get to the point where the first screen with
the simple apple logo shows, but then after 5 seconds it shuts down again. I do hear the disk
    going briefly during this time.
I booted with the hardware diagnostics CD that came with the machine, and all tests passed OK
    - both the quick tests and the extended tests.
Wanted to just try reinstalling from the Panther CD set that I have, but I've found that I can't
boot from those CDs - does the same thing, shows the apple logo, then shuts down after 5 seconds.
I tried restarting in single user mode, it doesn't seem to get very far - I get the black screen, it
prints about 5 lines of information, then one line saying "Using 983 buffer headers..." and then
it shuts down. Seems like it's not getting far at all into the boot process.
Any thought's on what to try next? Wish I could just reinstall, wiping the slate clean, but even
    that doesn't work!
Thanks in advance for any help...

    Success! This is so bizarre...
I have two Mac laptops, the iBook 700 MHz that's having the problem, and a newer
PowerBook G4. A few days ago I wanted to recharge the iBook...I've been very diligent
up to this point to use the correct charger with each laptop, the one that each came
    with.
I got lazy this last time...plugged the charger for the newer PowerBook into the
older iBook. Then I did the upgrade, and then I shut down the machine. It was after
that that I had problems restarting.
I got suspicious just now and looked at each charger. Thought they would be
interchangeable, but on looking at them the charger for the older iBook says output
is 24v 1.875A, while the one for the PowerBook is 24v 2.65A.
Knowing that there's a PMU (Power Management Unit) in these machines and that it
has settable parameters, I thought, what the heck, plug the correct charger back into
the iBook, just to see what happens. Voila, it started up OK!!!
    What the heck ?!?!
I'm pretty well versed in computers (work with Unix and Linux regularly, love the
Mac OS X command line!), just don't understand everything that goes on under the
hood with the Macs these days.
Just to get some final closure on this problem, can anyone explain why doing what
I did resolved the issue? I'd really like to learn from my mistakes.
Thanks to Rhonda and S.U. who responded so quickly for my plea for help!

  • When running on battery power, my MBP shuts down after 30 mins..please help

this has been happening for the last two weeks; whenever i run my MBP on battery, it goes blank/shuts down after about 30 mins...would start back on, but shut down even before the login screen comes! i checked the battery display under the laptop-it showed 3 green lights!! TIA!! i bought my MBP off the apple website last september!

With your symptoms, most likely, yes. If you have a 17" MBP, you are out of spec (based on Apple's specification of 80% health for 300 cycles). If you have a 15" MBP, you're in spec (84% health), but your symptoms indicate a problem (i.e. a defective battery). So, contact AppleCare!
You can't calibrate now. I asked because if a battery goes too long (150-220 cycles) without calibration, the "sudden loss of power" can result.
    Hope this helps...
Graham, that's why I inquired about calibration, but with the OP's cycle count, that's not the issue. Also, FYI the "battery condition" information is part of System Profiler with Leopard; the OP lists Tiger, and did post all the information available under Tiger.

  • MBP shuts down after 30 minutes of inactivity

Hello - I've posed this question before and thought it was solved but it has come back.  My MBP (circa 2008) with OS 10.6.8 continues to attempt a shut down after about 30 minutes of inactivity.  If there is an open app it prevents the shut down but it sure is annoying.
Does anyone have ideas on how to prevent this?  (Please note I am talking about a complete shut down - not going to sleep.)
    Thanks!

    Thanks Carolyn,
I worked my way through the options and then eventually tried the reset.  Bummer, no luck.  My MBP still tries to shut off after a half hour passes.  It's odd that the timing is so consistent, yet there are no settings I can find that would cause this shut down.

  • MBP shuts down after sleep when 2% battery left

Sorry guys if u find it irritating to see the similar question again n again but i couldnt stop myself from asking this...
i have my mbp just 3 weeks old and i tried to callibrate the battery just few hrs ago...i continuously used my mbp until the battery level reached to 2% (the warning message showed when it was 6%)...just then i had to received a phone call. When i was busy talking, i noticed that the mbp has gone to sleep mode...but when i returned (2-3 mins later), i found it shut down...
well, i think it should have remained to sleep mode but it didnt...then after an hour i connected the power cord and switched on and noticed a progress bar which i saw for the first time....i have been charging it for 40-50 mins, now...
also the health of my battery keeps fluctuating between 95-100 %...istat shows this...is this normal???
So what i want to know is, Is this normal for mbp to shut down when the battery reach that low?? OR there is some problem in my MBP???
if there is should i be going to my mbp reseller shop for service or it is something i can handle myself????
    thanks in advance..

then how am i supposed to callibrate if it shuts down before completely draining the battery???
and what about the battery health % being fluctuating? my battery have completed only 9 cycles and the health shown at the moment is 97%

  • External hard drive won't shut down after switch from OS10.5 to OS10.4.11

i recently chanded my OS from 10.5 to 10.4.11 (as a programme i want to use is not compatible with leopard), but since i have done this my external hard-drive won't shut down automatically when i shut down my mac. i have to switch it off at the plug instead.
can anyone suggest how i can get it to do this again?
i'm a little concerned that i'm damaging the external drive by turning it off manually all the time..
    thanks

Some hard drives shut off with shutdown, some don't. Sometimes hard drives that did shut off with one system will not do the same with a different system. My hard drives which did shut off, prior to 10.5 now stay on.
This is not really a problem as all hard drives spin down after 10- 20 minutes when not in use, whether your computer is on or off. Leaving the drive on is fine, shutting it off manually is fine.

  • Lenovo3000 N100 shuts down after boot

I have Lenovo300 N100. Have been using it for 6 years. Now it has a problem. It shuts down automatically after boot. It stays on for about a minute or two and then powers off automatically. One strange thing is, If I start it after a long delay (4-5 days) it boots and stays on for a longer time (15-20 min) before auto power off. But more I use it, quicker it powers off. Any help. Avinash

    Hi  Avidesh
    Welcome to the community
Since your system is powering on after few minutes after it is powered on . It seems to me that the Heat Sink Fan might have accumulated some dust and it is not able to properly cool down the system , that is the reason the system is powering Off after so me time . I  would recommend to have the heatsink fan cleaned properly
You may Please refer to HMM user manual how to open the heatsink fan and then can clean same .

  • [Zen Micro] Keeps shutting down after unplugging from comput

I have owned this player for a year and three and a half months now. I had sent it in for repair before the warranty expired because I kept getting annoying feedback into my earphones. Unfortunately, they didn't fixed it and just sent it right back costing $25+S/H. I went on installing the firmware and loading my music up just fine, but when I unplug it from the computer, it shuts down. I tried several things such as reformatting the thing, but it didn't work and I hadn't checked out the sticky firmware thread so I just left the player alone very frustrated until now.
I managed to reload the firmware again thanks to that thread but I still have the automatic shut-down problem when disconnecting from the computer. I did noticed that after I unplugged it, the power bar wasn't there before it shut down.
Your ideas are appreciated but please make sure it's not about sending it back to them. It's out of warranty.
Note: It does work again after I replace the battery, but I don't want to do this every time I want to load music onto it.

Is there a sleep timer on the Micro? Did you check for that? (as opposed to Idle Shutdown)

  • Shutting down after booting for 10 seconds

Okay I just bought a new motherboard and CPU and I'll boot up the computer and 10 seconds later it will shut down.  The network card's green light will still be on but the computer won't boot up when I press the power button.  I have to unplug the power cord and plug it back in before it will turn back on.
This is what I have running:
MS-6570 ATX Mainboard K7N2 Delta Series
    AMD Athlon XP+ 2600
    30gig HDD
    Lite-on DVD-ROM
    CDRW (don't know the make)
    512 DDR2100 266 RAM
    Geforce 3 Ti 500
    350W Power Supply
Now I'll boot it up with everything plugged in and it shuts down.  I ran it only with the HDD, DVD-ROM and vid card in it, shuts down.
I would really like to know whats going on here!

when i set J10 to safe mode it runs fine at 1100mhz.  when i set it to user mode it reboots after a few seconds.
wanting to run at 200mhz FSB, how do i fix this so it doesn't reboot?

    Hi,
could it be possible that you have Software installed, that doesnt support the standby function?
Often Programs like Firewalls or AntiVirus Programs are the reason.

  • Macbook Pro shuts down after booting up

I'm a new Macbook Pro owner running OS X.5. After booting up my computer "unexpectedly" quits and I need to hold power button and reboot. Sometimes it does this twice before finally operating normally. Any suggestions?
    Macbook Novice

    Either:
    a) Boot up in Safe Mode (hold down shift key at startup) to force checks and repairs
    or
    b) Boot holding down Apple/S (single user Mode) and don't let go until you see scrolling text.
When that stops and you see a root#: prompt enter
    fsck -fy
Let it run through all the checks and repairs.
If it fails first time, at any time, or finds and fixes a fault - run the command again and keep doing so (some fixes can take several passes) until it says "Appears to be OK" then enter
    reboot

  • IMac 2010 27" shuts down after boot

iMac was running fine and then I went to it and thought it went to sleep, but it was actually off.
    Odd.
I reboot, it boots up (Lion) and everything is fine, and then a few minutes later, it shuts off. Try to boot agian, get the chime, and it shuts off.
Now, whenever I boot it gets to the desktop and shuts off, if I try again right after it will hit the chime and shut off. The longer I leave it unplugged, the longer that it stays alive.
    Very odd.
Anyone ever seen something like this? I have put in a new power supply, taken out and put in different RAM (as well as single sticks, one at a time), I have even switched logic boards (that was daunting). Since I have no warranty, I have nothing to lose...but it seems like a heat issue if you ask me, since the longer it is unplugged, the longer it runs (never going over 5-6 minutes).
I have pulled out the i5 CPU and reapplied the thermal paste, so I don't think it's that either.
All of the connections inside seem fine, the only thing out of the back is the USB keyboard. I have done the PRAM and SMC resets.
    Thoughts?

Have you tried booting into the Recovery HD, selecting Disk Utility>Macintosh HD>Repair Disk to see if any repairs are needed.? If anything gets fixed/altered click on repair disk again until you get a clean pass. Restart as normal from the Apple menu. To do this, restart holding down Command + r (more details here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718 ).

  • MacBook Pro shuts down after booting

My MacBook Pro doesn't boot. It simply restart after the Apple logo and a few seconds of pinwheel.
I can start it target mode, but I can't boot with a CD nor any other volume. It keeps on restarting.
    Any idea ?

    Hi B,
You can't even startup in Single User?
If you are getting the splash screen some starting is being done, press COMMAND+V after Power button and see if you can read something that would give a clue about the issue.
If Single User is possible get the syslog report posted here.
    Good luck.
