MBP shuts down when connecting to power

Since a week or two, my MacBookPro from early 2011 shuts down when connecting the magsafe to power. Also when starting up again it will start up fine and fast from battery, but I need to hold the power button for several seconds when connected to power.
Another problem I had earlier as well is  CPU (kernel task) of over 90%, which I now see clearly, only occurs when connected to power. I used to solve this problem by putting the MBP to sleep, but now, when put to sleep, it will shut down.
When on battery, I have no CPU problem and can put machine to sleep without a problem.
I recently started uploading everything to dropbox, and activate caffeine to make sure it will keep uploading. My computer will run for days on power combined with caffeine, but is as slow as **** because of a >90% CPU.
The battery has had a notification for maybe a year, that it needed service, so today I finally bought and installed a new battery, but the problem is not solved. Is this software or could it be my magsafe adapter? Thanks for you help.

It sounds like a problem with the power management inside your MBP. I suggest you call Apple to make an appointment at your local Apple store for them to check it out for you.

  • 2011 MBP shuts down when connected to external display

I've been using my 2011 15" MBP for about a week now with no problem until today when I tried to connect it to my old 20" cinema display. I have the mini display port hooked up to the dvi adapter and a usb connection hooked up to external keyboard and mouse. Everything works just fine if I keep the lid up on the MBP, but if I shut the lid, the MBP shuts down. Down, not that the big screen goes black & then comes on again. It turns itself off.
Any way I can avoid a trip to the Apple store? In the past, the "geniuses" knew less about external displays than I did. Is there an issue because of the dual graphics cards?

no - I realized later that the machine doesn't shut off it just acts like it. The hard drive stops spinning & the screen remains black no matter what I do. This doesn't happen when I just shut the lid & then go back to working on it.
Then if I shut it again & try to get the monitor to respond, I get a blue screen of death color with a two inch band of blue noise along the left side. Very weird.

My 2011 MBP shut down when I was plugged in a T-Mobile samsung 2 using "market" USB. now it won't turn. The first time it happened, unaware of the cause of shut down at the moment,  I was able to turn it on. When I plugged it in again it shut down automatically, and now it won't turn on. The MBP was 85% charged at the moment. It has be 76 hours since it shut down. Please help

  • MBP Shuts Down when Power cord is removed

My MBP almost instantly shuts down when the power cord is unplugged. The battery has been fully charged; I've tried restarting the laptop, holding down the power button for 10 seconds, and resetting the SMC.
    What is going on??

I'm having the very same problem, and unless I find something on the discussions, I'm taking it into the Apple store as soon as possible.
This is my third battery, and each one seems to have a lifetime of about three months. This situation is different, though. The first one was bulging and shutting down when the battery was below 25% charged and the max battery capacity was dropping sharply. The second one was part of the exchange program, but I noticed it was starting to bulge and the max capacity was starting to drop (below ~60%).
This time, the max capacity is around 75% and I first noticed that it would shut down from sleep sporadically when on battery power. Then today, when I opened it, it shut down immediately. The battery was ~90% charged, but it wouldn't start up without the AC adapter. Now every time I unplug the adapter, the computer shuts down within 3 seconds. I also reset the SMC, which I think is the same process as resetting the PMU, perhaps they are equivalent terms or analogous devices, but the problem persists. There is no way to calibrate the battery since the computer won't run off it.
Unless there is something else to try, I recommend anyone with these problems should ask for a replacement battery.

  • MBP Shuts down when case pressed

My 2007 2.4GHz 17" MBP has started shutting down when any pressure is put on the RAM cover. Does not matter if the battery is installed or not. Any ideas on a fix?

Does it do this when on the A/C adapter or just when running on battery. If the latter, remove the battery and inspect it for any swelling, deformation of leakage. If it's leaking, the goop will look like blue-gray papier máche at the joint between the metal and plastic parts of the battery case.
If you've not tried replicating the shutdown while on A/C power, that would be a good next step in the diagnostic process.

  • MBP shuts down when battery at appox. 30%

    Hello,
    I have a 17" MBP 2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.
Recently (in the last 3-4 days) it has decided to shut down completely when the battery charge falls to around 30%. Prior to these symptoms appearing, it behaved normally with the 'low battery warning' appearing at about 5% and then going to sleep mode as opposed to shutting down.
I have reset the SMU by removing the adapter, battery and pressing the power button for 5 secs. Unfortunately the symptoms remain. Obviously I cannot re-calibrate the battery as it won't carry on below 30% charge without the MBP shutting down.
I'll be taking a trip to my local Apple dealer in the next few days but was wondering if anyone else here has any further suggestions I could try.
    Many thanks in advance.

...Hopefully Apple will do something about this. It doesn't seem right that the battery would fail this early! Especially after spending so much on a computer!
Umm... of course Apple will do something. I do not understand why you felt you had to add that to your reply. Allow me to explain:
    1. I have AppleCare, therefore if it's a hardware issue then any repair will be carried out without any cost to me.
    2. Apple have introduced a 'battery exchange and extension' program:
    http://www.apple.com/support/macbook_macbookpro/batteryupdate/
If the battery is at fault, regardless of whether I have AppleCare or not, the battery will be replaced as it falls within the terms of the extension program.
I have just now reset the PRAM and am running on battery power. I'll know in the next couple of hours whether that has had any effect or not.
Meantime, if anyone else has any additional suggestions as opposed to 'me too' type replies I would be very grateful.
    Many thanks.

  • X200 hangs during restart or shut down when connected to ultrabase

My X200 hangs during a Windows restart or shut down when I'm connected to my ultrabase.  The laptop appears to go through most of the processes to restart/shut down but eventually hangs at a blue screen with unmoveable cursor (note, not a Windows BSOD). I'm forced to perform a hard shut down to turn off the laptop.
This hang at restart/shut down only occurs when I'm connected to the ultrabase.

Just as a thing to try, and this is assuming that you all have an integrated camera, please try this camera driver and let the board know the results:

  • MBP shuts down when making Quick time conversion

MBP core duo 1.83 2G ram current updated software.
It shuts down when I try to do a Quick time conversion..
went to the Genius bar and booted from another drive and my macbook still shut down when doing a QT conversion. He says that means it is NOT a software issue.. blames the logic bd.. 310. for a fix if I send it out.. they would keep it overnight and do testing for free.
the console says "previous shut down cause: 3"... He said that was a code for shutting down by holding the button for 4 seconds and got all puzzled about that.
I have been able to convert files using Compressor which I have to do before I can use the go pro video in final cut.
it might have shut down once during a conversion that way.

Monitor your CPU core temp and see at what temp the computer shuts off. Also, download SystemLoad and run that for awhile to stress the processor. See if you can get it to shut down with that and at what temp.

  • MBP shuts down when touched if not on a flat surface?

    Good afternoon,
After recently replacing my damaged upper case/keyboard on my unibody macbook pro, now if I'm using it on my lap, or in bed, or basically anywhere other than a hard, flat surface like my coffee table, countertop, or desk, if I even slightly press anywhere on the upper case, the shut down dialoge will appear, and if I continue to hold, it will shut down as if the power button were pressed.
I carried it in my backpack on my way to work last week, and it shut down and started itself about 12 times from the walk from the train station to the building.
What gives?  I've opened it up and checked the ribbon cable for power - it's seated properly.  Is something obstructing the button, perhaps?

Assuming you did the repair yourself, it seems clear enough that either you got a faulty top case to replace the damaged one, or else you didn't get everything back together again quite right. You may want to take it apart again and then reassemble it carefully. I don't know whether you had any instructions to refer to when you disassembled it the first time, but you can find some here that may be useful:

  • MBP shuts down when not plugged into wall

    hey there,
was wondering if anyone has experienced this paritcular problem or knows what to do...
I've had my MBP for about a week now, and I just notcied a day that it randonmly shut down... but it was only once, so I though it wasn't that big of a deal. I left the computer charging all night ast night, and when I tried to start it without it being connected to the wall, it wouldn't boot. I checked my batter power, which is 89% full, reset the PRAM and reset all of my premissions, but it still shuts off everytime the DC adapter isn't plugged in. I aso ran the memtest program for RAM which someone on this forum had suggested, but it says that everyhting is A-Ok... What do i do? Somebody, please help!

I am having the exact same problem as you! The computer will run all day plugged into the wall, but after I remove power, it shuts down within 10-15 minutes. It usually refuses to start up again at all until you plug it back in, even though the lights on the battery indicate full charge. After plugging in and restarting, OS X still reports full battery charge. I have tried resetting the PRAM and PMU, and also cleaning the magsafe connections. Apple Hardware Test reports no problems.
I added a stick of Techworks memory from OWC when I got the computer. Other people with sporadic shutdown problems seem to be pointing to bad memory as the culprit. I don't know if that applies here though, because the problem only happens on battery power. Also, I installed the memory as soon as I got the computer and it's been working fine for almost a month now. My shutdowns didn't start until a couple of days ago. I think i will remove this extra stick of memory and see if the problem goes away, just in case. Maybe you should try removing the additional memory you got from the apple store to see if you got a defective piece.
I haven't tried calling apple yet regarding this. Have you? I'm curious to see what they say about it.

  • Cannot sleep or shut down when connected to TV through DVI

I recently reinvigorated my 2003 Power Mac G5 (Power PC) with a clean install of OSX Leopard and connected it to my TV via a VGA cable and DVI adapter.  I soon discovered the computer would not sleep or shut down with the TV connected:
    - Selecting "sleep" from apple menu, OR
    - Pressing sleep button on original ADC monitor (with both monitors connected,) OR
    - Waiting for 15 minute automatic sleep mode:
computer sleeps (tower clicks off as normal) but immediately wakes again
    - Selecting "shut down" from apple menu:
computer shuts down completely but immediately reboots
When the G5 runs on only the original monitor, sleep and shutdown commands work as expected.
Aside from unplugging the DVI adapter every time I want to sleep or shut down, is there a solution to this problem?

I've seen the TV problem before, not sure there is a cure, but perhaps one of these...
