MBP shuts down when watching videos or playing games..

The infamous first post - I know.
So I've been having this problem with my Macbook Pro that I received from my college for my Advertising program. When I am watching videos or even playing simple online games, after awhile the screen darkens from top to bottom and then the multi-language message comes up and tells me to restart my computer.
I decided to post this here to find out if this is a common problem, or if I should seek some kind of support help. I'm a little weary of IT here at my college because one of my professors informed my class that they are a bit reimage-crazy.
Anyways, I would really appreciate anyone's input..
Thanks guys.

  • Can't watch video and play games that require flash player

I'm using windows7 family premium version
internet explorer 10 last version 10.0.5
    exploitation system 64 bytes
flash player verson 11..700.202 the latest one
So as i say can't watch video and play games that require flash player, they keep asking me to install flashplayer... i did everything i read in the forums, unistall it, clean the memory, reinstall it, disabe active x etc... but still have the problem.
More specific about my problem is that: let's say that i'm trying to look at you tutorial video under thi forum  Re: How do I fix Windows permission problems with Flash Player? i'm just seeing a black screen.  So I'm able to guess where is the play button so when i push on that place, i can hear the sound of that video.  Second step guessing where is the  enlarge  button, and when the screen is enlarged, magic i can see and hear the video.... So you figure that it's impossible to use my computer like that and guess right all the time, so....
Second fact, it seems that bug happened after an update (windows or explorer) and i even talk with a microsott tech who was not able to resolve it... But if i'm  undoning  the update and go back to a prior image, i have no problems with flash player anymore... it' been moths that i'm delaying my updates cause i cannot find any solutions.... So Please please please, help me .... don't know what's the problem is and i'm not a pro, don't know what to do.  (Excuse my english it's my second language)
    Thank you

The first thing I'd try is updating your video driver.
Windows: how do I update the device driver for my video/display adapter?
If you still have problems and since you're using Windows 7 x64, please check to see if you have the following Windows update installed:
    KB2670838 – Platform Update for Windows 7 x64
If so, please uninstall it and try Flash Player out again.

  • MBP shuts down when making Quick time conversion

MBP core duo 1.83 2G ram current updated software.
It shuts down when I try to do a Quick time conversion..
went to the Genius bar and booted from another drive and my macbook still shut down when doing a QT conversion. He says that means it is NOT a software issue.. blames the logic bd.. 310. for a fix if I send it out.. they would keep it overnight and do testing for free.
the console says "previous shut down cause: 3"... He said that was a code for shutting down by holding the button for 4 seconds and got all puzzled about that.
I have been able to convert files using Compressor which I have to do before I can use the go pro video in final cut.
it might have shut down once during a conversion that way.

Monitor your CPU core temp and see at what temp the computer shuts off. Also, download SystemLoad and run that for awhile to stress the processor. See if you can get it to shut down with that and at what temp.

  • MacBook shuts down when streaming video

I use safari, so my assumption is the problem lies there. I did a software update in January along with upgrading to snow leopard but this problem has been happening since before then.
Its only a few years old and the only thig that's wrong with it is the battery is dead and needs replaced but I have my charger plugged in 24/7. would that have anything to do with streaming video?
Has this ever happened to anyone?

I've found that the computer only shuts down when streaming netflix.
I can play videos on youtube or vimeo long periods of time without the computer crashing.
When streaming netflix, the computer turns off within 5 minutes or less usually.
I have the newest version of silverlight installed and older versions deleted from my hd.
Does this information point to another or more specific problem?
Have others experienced a similar issue with regard to netflix or silverlight?

  • 2011 MBP shuts down when connected to external display

I've been using my 2011 15" MBP for about a week now with no problem until today when I tried to connect it to my old 20" cinema display. I have the mini display port hooked up to the dvi adapter and a usb connection hooked up to external keyboard and mouse. Everything works just fine if I keep the lid up on the MBP, but if I shut the lid, the MBP shuts down. Down, not that the big screen goes black & then comes on again. It turns itself off.
Any way I can avoid a trip to the Apple store? In the past, the "geniuses" knew less about external displays than I did. Is there an issue because of the dual graphics cards?

no - I realized later that the machine doesn't shut off it just acts like it. The hard drive stops spinning & the screen remains black no matter what I do. This doesn't happen when I just shut the lid & then go back to working on it.
Then if I shut it again & try to get the monitor to respond, I get a blue screen of death color with a two inch band of blue noise along the left side. Very weird.

  • MBP shuts down when connecting to power

Since a week or two, my MacBookPro from early 2011 shuts down when connecting the magsafe to power. Also when starting up again it will start up fine and fast from battery, but I need to hold the power button for several seconds when connected to power.
Another problem I had earlier as well is  CPU (kernel task) of over 90%, which I now see clearly, only occurs when connected to power. I used to solve this problem by putting the MBP to sleep, but now, when put to sleep, it will shut down.
When on battery, I have no CPU problem and can put machine to sleep without a problem.
I recently started uploading everything to dropbox, and activate caffeine to make sure it will keep uploading. My computer will run for days on power combined with caffeine, but is as slow as **** because of a >90% CPU.
The battery has had a notification for maybe a year, that it needed service, so today I finally bought and installed a new battery, but the problem is not solved. Is this software or could it be my magsafe adapter? Thanks for you help.

It sounds like a problem with the power management inside your MBP. I suggest you call Apple to make an appointment at your local Apple store for them to check it out for you.

  • Itunes shuts down when syncing videos to iphone 3gs

iTunes shuts down when trying to sync videos on my iPhone 3gs. Music syncs fine but when videos try and sync iTunes crashes ant suggestions?

When my new 80GB iPod attempts to sync my Outlook contacts information, Outlook opens, and then I get the "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close" screen and iTunes shuts down.
hmmmm. in the "further information" link, is there a particular compenent being identified as causing the crash? if so, what is it called?

  • MBP Shuts down when case pressed

My 2007 2.4GHz 17" MBP has started shutting down when any pressure is put on the RAM cover. Does not matter if the battery is installed or not. Any ideas on a fix?

Does it do this when on the A/C adapter or just when running on battery. If the latter, remove the battery and inspect it for any swelling, deformation of leakage. If it's leaking, the goop will look like blue-gray papier máche at the joint between the metal and plastic parts of the battery case.
If you've not tried replicating the shutdown while on A/C power, that would be a good next step in the diagnostic process.

  • MBP shuts down when battery at appox. 30%

    Hello,
    I have a 17" MBP 2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.
Recently (in the last 3-4 days) it has decided to shut down completely when the battery charge falls to around 30%. Prior to these symptoms appearing, it behaved normally with the 'low battery warning' appearing at about 5% and then going to sleep mode as opposed to shutting down.
I have reset the SMU by removing the adapter, battery and pressing the power button for 5 secs. Unfortunately the symptoms remain. Obviously I cannot re-calibrate the battery as it won't carry on below 30% charge without the MBP shutting down.
I'll be taking a trip to my local Apple dealer in the next few days but was wondering if anyone else here has any further suggestions I could try.
    Many thanks in advance.

...Hopefully Apple will do something about this. It doesn't seem right that the battery would fail this early! Especially after spending so much on a computer!
Umm... of course Apple will do something. I do not understand why you felt you had to add that to your reply. Allow me to explain:
    1. I have AppleCare, therefore if it's a hardware issue then any repair will be carried out without any cost to me.
    2. Apple have introduced a 'battery exchange and extension' program:
    http://www.apple.com/support/macbook_macbookpro/batteryupdate/
If the battery is at fault, regardless of whether I have AppleCare or not, the battery will be replaced as it falls within the terms of the extension program.
I have just now reset the PRAM and am running on battery power. I'll know in the next couple of hours whether that has had any effect or not.
Meantime, if anyone else has any additional suggestions as opposed to 'me too' type replies I would be very grateful.
    Many thanks.

  • MBP Shuts Down when Power cord is removed

My MBP almost instantly shuts down when the power cord is unplugged. The battery has been fully charged; I've tried restarting the laptop, holding down the power button for 10 seconds, and resetting the SMC.
    What is going on??

I'm having the very same problem, and unless I find something on the discussions, I'm taking it into the Apple store as soon as possible.
This is my third battery, and each one seems to have a lifetime of about three months. This situation is different, though. The first one was bulging and shutting down when the battery was below 25% charged and the max battery capacity was dropping sharply. The second one was part of the exchange program, but I noticed it was starting to bulge and the max capacity was starting to drop (below ~60%).
This time, the max capacity is around 75% and I first noticed that it would shut down from sleep sporadically when on battery power. Then today, when I opened it, it shut down immediately. The battery was ~90% charged, but it wouldn't start up without the AC adapter. Now every time I unplug the adapter, the computer shuts down within 3 seconds. I also reset the SMC, which I think is the same process as resetting the PMU, perhaps they are equivalent terms or analogous devices, but the problem persists. There is no way to calibrate the battery since the computer won't run off it.
Unless there is something else to try, I recommend anyone with these problems should ask for a replacement battery.

  • Computer shuts down when importing CDs and playing video

When in iTunes, my computer completely shuts off a couple mintues in when trying to import a CD or play video. I have asked around and reinstalled and nothing seems to help. Any ideas! Very frustrating.

I just started having the same problem. I was able to import songs from 5 cds with no problem, but when I tried a few more my mac started shutting down about halfway through the import of the song. It doesn't matter how many songs I choose to import, it happens on the first one everytime. Did you find a fix for this?

  • TS1717 iTunes stops and shuts down when I try to play a purchased music video clip, any ideas on how to fix.

Has anybody had this and know a fix?
I try to play a purchased music video clip and iTunes shuts down or windows 7 shuts it down as an unexpected error.
This only started when I updated to 10.7.
    re-loaded, reset, repaired.
    Still no go.
    Thanks

  • I have downloaded I Tunes 10.7 and now the program shuts down when I try to play music videos?

I have downloaded I Tunes 10.7 to my computer and now the program closes when I try to play music videos. Is there a fix out there I can try?

from what I read on the discussion boards there seems to be little or nothing to do that may not mess up the computer (Like jerky videos if Quicktime fix is tried) except wait for Apple to do a proper fix with updates at this point. I am not willing to try the fixes explained so far. The reviews of them are spotty on them working if at all. My I Tunes works on everything but the videos and that is better than nothing which did happen at first. So I will keep watching for any other fixes that might be promising or an Apple Update.
