MBP shuts off randomly when not on charger
I've had my MBP for a while and for the last year, when my laptop isn't plugged in, it shuts off compeltely without warning. Just wanted to know if it's time for a new battery or a hardware problem.
Battery Info:
Full Charge: 5330
Remaining: 5208
Amperage: 0
Voltage: 12294
Cycle Count: 81
And of course, this is while it's plugged in.
Hi wpetraska;
When I got my MBP, I was having the same problem. Since it was brand new, I took it into the Apple Store. They looked at it and told me there was fault with the logic board. It would have to be replaced. Two days later I got it back and it has worked great ever since.

MBP Shuts off Randomly when not plugged in
So, I've had a 2007 MBP and been very happy until just now.
My computer has started randomly shutting off. Not shutting down, but like "click" off when its not plugged in. This happens at different times, sometimes 5 minutes after its unplugged, sometimes 15, but it will.
Any ideas? Anything I can do? I don't really want to buy a new one because this one works just fine other than that.
ThanksSeriously, look on the first page of this forum and you'll see other threads already started on the subject. No-one has a solution as yet, other than replacing the battery, even though it seems to be a software update (Snow Leopard or otherwise) that's the culprit.

My 15-inch MBP (bought May 2009, running 10.5.8) has recently been shutting off randomly, sometimes upwards of 10 times a day if I am using it a lot.
I first suspected this as a battery problem, because the only way I can keep it from shutting down is by keeping it plugged into a power source (it has never shut down when plugged in). However, I have a second battery that I bought in 2010, and the exact same problem occurs regardless of which battery I have inside.
Although sometimes the shut offs are random, sometimes it will happen if i sit my MBP on a desk not-so-gently (but not hard either), or if I drop something not-so-gently onto the area below my keyboard. Also, it almost always shuts down when I close the lid and put it into my backpack.
I don't know too much about the interior hardware, but my best guess was there is a faulty area where the computer power attaches to the battery source, and when somethign disturbs that connection then the computer shuts off?
Any thoughts?Hi wpetraska;

2012 Retina MBP shutting off randomly
Recently it's been shutting off at random points and when I power up it won't turn back on right away. Also when I close the lid it will completely shut off, and when it turns back on I get a message saying that it restarted due to a problem. Any information would be appreciated.

I did run the Apple Hardware Test and after running both normal and extended tests no trouble was found. I managed to download the widget called iStat Pro, I realized that my CPU was idling at 50%, and the CPU temperature was 80 degrees Celsius. This caused my fans to run consistently at 6000RPM. I discovered that the random shut down while running on the battery was caused by too much current being drained by the system. So as you suggested, it was indeed happening for safety reasons.
By looking at the Activity Monitor and selecting all processes I saw that a process called printjobmgr was utilizing 100% of the CPU. I found this strange as I had performed several restarts and would have expected this process to terminate on its own. As soon as I used Force Quit, everything returned to normal. Strangely, every time I print something, the printjobmgr starts up and utilizes 100% of the CPU. This lasts until the printing is finished. I still was unable to find a permanent solution to this. -
Laptop turns off randomly when not plugged into charger
I have a 2013 Macbook Air and a few weeks ago, it started turning off randomly after a few minutes of use. It only works without turning off when it's plugged into the power.
I tried resetting the SMC various times, and the battery software update was not applicable to my device.
I'm not sure if it's a dead battery or not, because the device still charges.
I work for a magazine, and kinda need my laptop so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank youHey bbkae
Continue you troubleshooting with the article below to check the health of your battery. I would try to run hardware diagnostics on it to see if it passes the test.

My 2010 MacBook Pro has recently started to shut itself off without warning, usually while I do graphics-intensive tasks (image editing or viewing in Acorn or iPhoto). The screen goes black all of a sudden; the keyboard backlight stays on and if iTunes is playing, a half-second piece of the audio plays over and over again. The only way to get any response from the computer seems to be to press and hold the power button to shut it down completely. This occurs when the computer is plugged in and when it’s running off of the battery; I’ve shut off all of the background tasks (e.g. Flux, Dropbox, Arq) I can think of, with no change. Any idea what might be causing this, and how I can fix it?
This seems to have been a hardware problem. I took my computer to an authorized repair shop and they found a problem with the graphics card. After they replaced my logic board I no longer have this problem.

Help please
If it will not power on by doing a reset, take the device to Apple for evaluation and possible replacement.

Please Help! MBP shutting off when plugged in, now not recognizing MagSafe Adapter
I started seeing this problem a few weeks ago, my MacBook Pro just shut off spontaneously while watching a video full-screen. I turned it back on and the problem went away for a while. But now, the shut-downs happen more frequently. It doesn't matter if the MBP is running off of the battery or if its running off of the AC cord, it will just shut off. No warning. No standard shut-down process, everything just stops and a balck screen shows up. After it shuts off, it takes a few seconds to get it to restart, and when it does, the computer's date and time will be reset to some date in 2000. Very strange, I've had this computer for a year and I know people with the same model that have had no such problems. The battery is at 168 cylces (I use this for school, so it was being used everyday throughout the last two semesters), and the Condition is listed as Normal in the System profiler, so I doubt the problem is with the battery, but I could be wrong. I've seen posts about the RAM/PRAM causing the date/time resets. Nevertheless, the MBP has been running normally on the battery, battery life is still the same length of time as it was when I first got the computer, and runs smoothly. Up until last night, the AC MagSafe Adapter was still working, so I only used that as the power source. Everything was fine, but the MBP shut off once or twice while it was plugged in within the last month or so, but the AC would still have a green light, indicating the computer was still recognizing the power source. Now, I can't get the MagSafe to be rocognized at all. The computer is running on battery only, and I've tried resetting the SMC, but I'm unsure if it worked since the MagSafe is still unrecognized. When its plugged in, the System Profiler says it is not connected and not charging.
I'm running on Mac OS X 10.6.8, a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, with a 4GB memory (of which less that half is used). Computer usage is low, so its not like I'm running several programs at once, at most, its two or three at a time, for short periods. My MBP is a 13" aluminum body, doesn't seem to be overheating, has worked fine after long periods of being on and getting hot, I always let it cool down after I feel it getting too warm.
Please help if you can! Thank you!Battery Information:

my ipad randomly shut off and when i go to turn it on it shows a cord connecting to the itunes symbol, my ipad is not disabled by the way. has anyone else had this problem? if so does anyone know how to fix it?
Glitchs like that sometimes happen
Try:
- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Restore from backup. See:
iOS: How to back up
- Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If sit still reocurrs a lot, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

I have a iPhone 4 and lately it has been shutting down randomly when I still have battery left. It also doesn't turn back on, until I plug it in to the charger. But when I plug it in, the low battery sign shows up then comes to the lock screen with like 68% left.
Morning Clementine Lin,

Have an iPhone 4 that is now shutting off randomly including during calls. The iPhone is roughly about five months old. When the iPhone shuts down and tries to restart it usually take two or three times before it stays on, but when it does it sometimes has a dark line down the center and shuts off. Not very happy about the iPhone doing this. The store we had purchased the iPhone 4 from suggested that we contact Apple to see about a replacement, or send it away for service. As you can tell we are not happy at this point since the iPhone is crucial part of our day for work and family. What should we do at this point?
Thanks for the suggestions!
Except I tried all those before I even made this topic lol, but thanks!
I Already popped out the Sim Card & let my phone sit without it for a few minutes then put it back in. Sometimes it will work again & it will say it recognizes the SIM Card but more times then not it still says it cant recognize it! So I have to take it out & reinsert it multiple times.
& I have done a complete restore 2 times & a back up restore 3 times. Nothing seems to be working.
I am planning on going to the Apple Store this week, wish me luck!
But keep the suggestions coming if you have any, I'd appreciate it! -
My ipod touch 4g doesn't work i didnt have charger at first and when my cousins came over i charged it with his it was full and the next minute it was empty. it gave me the warning sign. Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
