MBP size compared to MB/12" Powerbook

Hi
was just wondering how much bigger a new MBP is compared to a macbook or a 12"powerbook. i owned an old 12" powerbook and loved its size as it was so portable. anyone who has owned or used a smaller notebook and has also used a MBP 15", how much bigger are 15" MBP's compared to mb in size and are they not as easy to carry around to college at home etc.
Thanks

Im not so sure about they 15inch, MBP but i know my 17inch gets warm to - hot depending on what i am doing, itunes, and surfing the web i can leave it on my lap, sometime i use a cooling pad just so im not cutting off the airflow. Under someload the notebook can get hot only above the F-keys, from what i understand its like this on the 15inch, but the whole body gets a bit warmer. I was worried about the same issuses and i have found that i can live with this computer being warm, it would be nicer if it was cooler but its not that big of a deal.
Btw using coreduo temp i run between 50C as warm and 74C hot so its not to bad.

  • How to view image size compared to Page size

    In previous versions if you clicked the bottom left onthe frame of an image where the document size is you would get a small popup of an outline of the image size compared to the current page size. I cannot figure out how to see this in the new CS4 version. I've tried everything, help!

    Hello Heiko,
    I don't know, if it is possible, but I would say,
    it's not implemented yet. Maybe you can change the picture size and use then the pictures, that might be a workaround, if you can't change the height and width in VC.

  • Logo with percent size compared with the image

    Hello everyone
    I want to ask if there is any way to make a script that place a logo AND the size of that logo has a specific percent size (lets say 10%)
    compared with the one of the two axis of the image (lets say according to the image height).
    This is because I use to crop and reframe my photos. At the end of the edit I run my logo batch and of course every logo has different size
    compared with the size of the photo…
    Thank you all

    Yes.

  • How solid is MBP? compared to thinkpad and others

    Hello folks, I've been a happy MBP user for one month now. the only thing that I am still unsure for my choice over thinkpad is the MBP's alumnium case(build quality). how does that compare to the tank solid thinkpad? for example, its widely known that a 60kg man can safely stand on a thinkpad without any damage. how about MBP ? any kind of similiar tests ? even though it's unlikely happening in real world, it does seem to be cool to know that how good MBP is.

    I had a 12" aluminum PowerBook before and now have the 15" MacBook Pro. Unlike some others posting here, I find the MacBook Pro to be of exactly the same build quality as my 12" PowerBook: i.e. strong and sturdy. My 12" PowerBook was a little over three years old when I sold it and still in great shape - it should last as many more years as the new owner needs it to. I certainly didn't beat the PowerBook up, but I didn't baby it either. It stood up very well to normal "real life" use, lots of carrying about the house, yard, and in travel bags, and its fair share of bumps.
    The MacBook Pro seems exactly the same in terms of the way the case it put together, the way the hinge and latches work, and overall build quality. Frankly, I can't imagine why anyone would call it fragile.

  • Muvo TX FM / N200 Size Compari

    Hello
    I currently have a Muvo 28 and like it quite a bit. However I would like to upgrade to a player with more memory. I am wondering how the size of the two units compare. I realize the N200 is a one piece design, but I do not want something that is too tiny, which means I may go with a TX FM.
    Also, I noticed some of the "shells" which can be purchased separately for the NX,TX line seem to be out of stock, are they discontinued. Lastly, is the TX FM discontinued?
    Regards
    Randy

    here are the sizes:
    TX and TX FM: 36.7 x 74 x 6 mm
    Micro N200: 33.5 x 65.5 x 3 mm
    I would suggest to draw them on a piece of paper and cut it out.
    The TX FM is not discontinued, as far as I know. You can still buy it in many stores, the firmware was updated 3 days ago and creative still sells the battery-holders for it. And on one of creatives site they wronte something about a GB version of the TX FM, maybe it will be available in the future, I didn't see it in any store yet.
    Remember: the N200 does not have a built in USB-plug, so you need a cable for it. This does not apply for the TX, TX FM and the V200. They have a two-part -design (with battery-holder) and do not need a cable.

  • MBP peformance compared to PowerMac G5 2.3 DP?

    I'm considering a MacBook Pro, and plan to use it in addition to my PowerMac G5 2.3 DP. I actually don't have any cards inside the PowerMac, and the only real benefit I get from my G5 over a Macbook Pro is the hard drive capacity - I have two hard drives, a 250 and a 300GB.
    I'm thinking it's probably not a good idea, but can anyone comment on how the Performance would compare if I got say the 2.16 GHz MBP and sold my G5? One thing that puts me off would be having to keep disconnecting peripherals (shame Apple doesn't still do a docking system). How does the graphics performance of the MBP compare to the GeForce 6800 Ultra?
    I did try looking at Xbench performances, and the results in the 50's for the MBP and 113 for my G5 appear not to be valid for various reasons I don't understand. Has anyone found any benchmark figures that show a true comparison?

    Heya Ben,
    This sounds to me like a heat problem. If you didn't know already the heat sensors for the hard drives aren't actually near the nears but at the top of the case, trouble is that the readings will vary hugely from the hard drives to the sensor. Anyways, with an extra hard drive in there there's probably some serious heating problem going on. There's a few mods you can do if you feel comfortable which involve relocated the heat sensor to the drive so that the HD fans will actually work when they need to, and not just stay in constant low speed.

  • Size of new hdd in Powerbook Titanium 800GHz?

    Hi,
    how much disk size does my Powerbook G4 Titnium with 800GHz support? Right now there is a 40GB disk installed and I want to replace it with a new one.
    Regards, Torsten

    Hi tjk (and Torsten),
    There are now 160Gb drives available that work with Titanium Powerbooks, according to reports online at http://www.xlr8yourmac.com.
    Torsten, good luck. It's fairly easy to change the drives (I upgraded mine on the floor of a japanese youth hostel once, only took 10 minutes).

  • MBP Matte display "hazy", vs. Powerbook display?

    I'm having some wierdness with my new (and great!) MBP. It seems like the matte coating on the display is "too matte" or something like that. Solid colors aren't uniform, but seem "shimmery," as if there was a very thin oil slick (or fingerprint layer) over the screen. This is not the case with my old TiBook matte screen. The MBP display is unquestionably brighter, with richer colors - but with less color consistency. I would almost say that I prefer the TiBook display over the MacBooks, because it is sharper and more regular. The fogging effect on the macbook screen is strong enough to hide image details that are apparent on the older screen, such as slight color shifts and banding in gradients.
    Has anyone else noticed an issue like this with their MBP matte display? Especially someone who has an older apple laptop screen to compare? I'm really hoping that this is a "bad screen" issue that I can get fixed, and not just the product of crappier (but brighter) screens in the MBP line. Note: i'm not talking about moving visual noise or flicker in the screen - it is perfectly stable, just a bit ugly :/
    Thanks,

    MacBook Pro 15"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Excellent catch, Jayson Allyson1. The 18-bit thing is simple. Each "pixel" on your LCD screen is actually made up of 3 subpixels: red, green, and blue, very close together. In "millions of colors" mode, each of these subpixels should have 256 possible values, from 0 (off) to 255 (full bright). This is 8 bits per subpixel (2^8 = 256) also known as 24-bit color, for a total of 2^24 = 16,777,216 displayable colors.
    Some cheaper/faster desktop LCD displays (and, apparently, notebook displays) are only capable of displaying 6 bits per subpixel, or 18-bit color, totalling 2^18 = 262,144 colors. I didn't know the MBP had one of these unfortunate displays, but apparently it's common.
    Dithering is placing a lower number of colors in a certain pattern to trick your eye into seeing a higher number of colors. This is done by the video card automatically. So, -if- this theory is correct, the speckled pattern is coming from normal dithering.
    Now apparently the x1600 is supposed to do "temporal dithering" which involves altering the color of -the same pixel-, quickly enough to mitigate the pattern effect you're going to get from dithering. From what I can tell from the message board threads, this is stuck in freeze-frame (or the dithering is just really bad) due to a video BIOS bug.
    The problem is, who knows if this is the actual issue, and if it is, it was apparently fixed a while ago, so why would they ship like this? Also, it means everyone should be seeing this issue, unless some people got 24-bit displays (unlikely).
    Regardless, this gives some cause for hope. Thanks!

  • JPEG file sizes compared to PS.

    Hi there folks
    I've noticed that the file sizes when exporting from Aperture2 to jpg are considerably different to the same files exported from Photoshop.
    For example one image which was set to jpeg compression level 5 with DPI of 240 came out as 1.4mb whereas in photoshop the same image came out as 500kb.
    Has anyone else noticed this and are there any settings I can check to see if there is something causing this?
    Thanks for your help
    Graeme

    Yeah it seems to vary from about 70-100% bigger depending on the image. I was wondering if it was something to do with the metadata that's included. I always include my metadata because I am shooting for a news agency, but maybe it's the way that it stores it in the file????
    I want to keep using Aperture as much as possible because I have the uberupload plugin as well and it means I can fire stuff straight through to the agency from aperture by FTP without any other apps and makes my workflow a lot quicker.
    Has puzzled me.

  • IMac 20in compared to a 15in Powerbook?

    Okay, I know this has been a posted in similar forms before, but I need to ask my own question. I have a 12inch, G3 iBook. On Saturday I will be getting a new Mac. I am having a difficult time with this. the 15inch Powerbook appeals to me because it's not a G3 (hehe), and it's portable. But to be honest, I rarely go anywhere with it. I admit, when I do it's nice. I guess it's like using 4-Wheel Drive. Those who have it, don't often use it. Anyway. I think I want the ability to take it places, but is it worth the sacrifice to give up 20inches of real estate and a fast processor for graphics and video work? Any thoughts, please. Experiences with either and such would be great! Thank you everyone.

    Hi Maeler,
    I used a 12" PB G4 for the last couple of years, often as a "defacto desktop", hooked up to a larger external screen and keyboard etc.
    I bought an imac G5 a couple of months ago. THe iMac is simply brilliant for the sort of stuff I do (writing things, messing around with maps, spending to much time on the discussion boards here, etc etc). The screen is excellent, and the speed bump from the G4 Pb is impressive (though my PB was an older, 867 MHz model of course).
    You get other extras thrown in, too, of course, like a much larger HD and a less problematic DVD burner than some people seem to be reporting on the PB's.
    I still need a notebook , say 25% of the time, and I simply kept my PB12 for just that reason. It does the job fine when I'm "in the field". But the imac beats the pants off it when I'm at home! Why not get the iMac for your desktop and hang on to your G3 ibook for those comparatibely rare occasions when you need something portable? Used this way, the iBook remains valuable too, but you have all the advantages of a more modern processor, big screen, and oodles of storage when you really need them.
    You can also afford to "option up" an iMac, and spend a few $$$ on an external backup drive, or on software or other peripherals too, for the same amount you would spend on a PB15. Don't forget that things like RAM, large HD's and Applecare also all cost a lot less for an iMac than they do for a PB 15.
    Cheers
    Rod

  • Which MBP (size-wise)?

    Should I get the 15" or 17" MacBook Pro? I will mainly be using it for browsing, gaming, photo-editing, chatting, movies, etc. and I don't know if I should get the 15 or 17 inch model.... also, should I go for the 8GB of RAM upgrade... or is 4GB enough for what I will be doing? Also, where can I get windows 7 retail for bootcamp?
    Thanks.
    PS - does anyone know which size GaGa's laptop is? It was in an hbo teaser, and I would just like to know... thanks

    AJ,
    I have the 15" inch MacBook Pro and I totally recommend it over the 17" MacBook Pro.The 15" MacBook Pro is right in the middle of the MacBook Pro product line-up and it operates perfectly fine for the things you wanna use it for.The 13" MacBook Pro is a let down because if you like to keep up with apple,it needs to updraded frequently and besides,it's always behind on processing technology,but if you don't have very much money and your a college student,then I owuld recommend it.The 17" MacBook Pro is relativley large.The 17" is kind of like a hassle because of the size of it and it's not much better than the MacBook Pro,but I would recommend it to you if your interested in having a laptop that you won't move around very often.Overall,I would recommend to you the 15" MacBook Pro.The 15" is just right because of the size and protability of the machine.I have a boot camp partition with Windows 7 installed on it and I use netflix via the Windows Media Center and movies play at an excellent rate of speed and it's even better watching a movie on a purchased DVD on the Apple DVD Player and it doesn't lag at all even with some simple browsing applications open such as Safari.Chatting on the 15" is also convienient with a new feature that Apple released called FaceTime.With FaceTime,you can chat with others that have an iDevice and a registered FaceTime account.In case you use a program like Skype,that's also available for Apple's Mac OS X and would be great for video chatting and not to mention that iChat is another great video chat client for Mac.If you don't already know,the MacBook Pros already have built in "iSight" cameras built in.Photo-editting is great on a mac system with the applications that are available for it such as Adobe Photoshop.Gaming is coming along great with a new app hub called the Apple Mac App Store.This application allows developers to publish there newly optimized for Mac OS X games and other content all into 1 market that allows a user to choose from one of the most excellent games out there for the Macintosh operating system.You can also play a lot of your Windows games on your mac with boot camp which allows you to partition your hard drive for Windows,so you can run your Windows programs natively on your Mac,but if you do choose to do gaming frequently on a Mac,then try upgrading the RAM on your MacBook Pro 15" before purchasing it with only 4GB DDR3.Before I end my recommendation,I wanna suggest that you get a slot state hard drive (SSD) if you have enough for it.A solid state hard drive on the MacBook Pro is very convienient to boost the overall performance on the MacBook Pro.I Hope This Helps!

  • Two arraylists with different size, compare them!

    I Have a major problem now.
    I have two text files that I read and split.
    TableA:
    AT1G01710.1     1     425     427     SKL
    AT1G16730.1     1     200     202     SKL
    AT1G20480.1     1     563     565     SKL
    AT1G20510.1     1     544     546     SKL
    AT1G20560.1     1     554     556     SKL
    AT1G20560.2     1     476     478     SKL
    TableC:
    AT1G01710.1
    AT1G16730.1
    AT1G20480.1
    AT1G20510.1
    AT1G20510.2
    AT1G20560.1
    AT1G20560.2I have a database with the values in TableC. In table A I am interested in the 4th "column", The values before SKL. As you see; AT1G20510.2 doesn't exist in TableA. So for those values that does not exist in Table A, I just want to a add a null value. I want this output:
    AT1G01710.1 \t 427
    AT1G16730.1 \t 202
    AT1G20480.1 \t 565
    AT1G20510.1 \t 546
    AT1G20510.2 \t null
    AT1G20560.1 \t 556
    AT1G20560.2 \t 478This is my code:
    // Reads table C.
    while ((line_tableC = br_tablec.readLine()) != null) {
         c_list.add(line_tableC);
    // c_list size = 6
    // Reads table A, and split around tabs and add "column" 4 to a list (list_size_aa).
    while ((line_tableA = br_tablea.readLine()) != null) {
         a_tab_split = line_tableA.split("\\t", -1);
         a_list.add(a_tab_split[0]);
         list_size_aa.add(a_tab_split[3]);
    // a_list size = 5
    // Problem 1: a_list is smaller than c_list
    for (int i = 0; i < a_list.size(); i++) {
              if (a_list.contains(c_list.get(i))) {
              x.add(list_size_aa.get(i));
             else {
         x.add("null");
           System.out.println(c_list.get(i) + "\t" + x.get(i));With this code I get this output:
    AT1G01710.1 \t 427
    AT1G16730.1 \t 202
    AT1G20480.1 \t 565
    AT1G20510.1 \t 546
    AT1G20510.2 \t null
    AT1G20560.1 \t 478
    AT1G20560.2 \t 709Do you see the problem? In the output I get AT1G20560.1 with the corresponding value 478, but it should be 556! This is because when a_list doesn't contain a string from c_list, a null value will be added to x, and i will be incremented. Its hard to explain, maybe you see it better than I am to explain.
    How can I solve this?
    Best regards, knx

    Last for loop should be based on table C data. In this loop your approach should be fetch each record of table C and retrieve corresponding value from table A using the key.
    Here is your solution:
    [*Note:* I have used HashMap to hold data of table A and also to hold result. You can use any data type of your choice, but approach will be same.]
    import java.io.*;
    import java.util.*;
    public class Parser{
         public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception{
              System.out.println("Hello: "+System.getProperty("user.dir"));
              new Parser().parse();
         public void parse() throws Exception{
              FileReader reader1=new FileReader("TABLE_A.txt");
              BufferedReader buffer1=new BufferedReader(reader1);
              FileReader reader2=new FileReader("TABLE_C.txt");
              BufferedReader buffer2=new BufferedReader(reader2);
              HashMap<String,String> tableAData=new HashMap<String,String>();
              List<String> tableCData=new ArrayList<String>();
              // Read data from table a
              String data=null;
              while((data=buffer1.readLine())!=null){
                   String[] temp=data.split("\\t");
                   tableAData.put(temp[0],temp[3]);
              data=null;
              while((data=buffer2.readLine())!=null){
                   tableCData.add(data);
              HashMap<String, String> result=new HashMap<String, String>();
              for(String cData: tableCData){
                   if(tableAData.containsKey(cData)){
                        result.put(cData, tableAData.get(cData));
                   }else{
                        result.put(cData, null);
              System.out.println("Result: "+result.toString());
    }Thanks,

  • Avi file size compared to m2v file size

    I saved a movie clip in MPEG for computer playback.  The file size was 112MB.  The preset was H.264 1440x1080i 25, no export audio, the codec was MainConcept H.264 Video, TV standard was automatic, frame dimensions were 720 by 480, frame rate was 29.97, field order was automatic, fixed aspect ratio was automatic, level was 4.1, bitrate encoding was VBR, 2 Pass, and Bitrate level was high.  I then saved the file in AVI and the file size was 426MB.  The preset was Microsoft AVI, no export audio, the video codec was Cinepak Codec by Radius, quality was 100, size was 720 by 480, frame rate was 29.97, field type was lowere first and aspect was square pixels.  Why would the file size nearly quadruple and what can I do to get the AVI file size down below 400MB?  Thanks.
    Steve

    Well, for one thing, you're going from one format to another -- but, more so, you're going from one codec (compression system) to another.
    The H.264 codec is the one used for creating AVCHD video, although not all H.264 video is AVCHD. It can also be used as a delivery format (that's a format that you display online or play on a computer) -- which seems to be the case here. Your source is apparently from an AVCHD camcorder, although at that file size it must only be about 10 seconds long.
    Though that's hard to say too. Codecs can be highly compressed or lightly compressed, so two files using the same codec and the same file format can be very different in size!
    The Cinepak codec is also a delivery format, though it uses a completely different codec system as well as being for a different file format (AVI). You would neer use a file with a Cinepak codec as source material for editing. It's a highly compressed delivery format. Convert the file to a DV-AVI (an AVI using the DV codec) and it will likely be many times that size.

  • ITunes Folder size compared to available media in iTunes

    My iTunes folder is listed at 127.95 GB, however I only have 78.42 GB of music/movies/tv shows in iTunes. I have a hard time believing that 49.53 GB are iTunes system files.... ***???

    I'm not at my own computer right now but I think the television shows are all in a sub-folder in the iTunes Music folder. Same with podcasts and audiobooks. How you proceed is going to depend on your back up software. If you're just dragging and dropping to an external, I think you could close iTunes, drag the video folder out of your iTunes Music Folder, drag and drop the iTunes Music folder to the external. When it's done, be sure to put the video folder back before starting iTunes again or it won't be able to find it. If you're using back up software, just follow whatever procedures the software requires to select what you want to back up and don't select the video.
    Keep in mind that I don't use Windows as my primary operating system so you may have to translate.

  • File sizes different on iPhone compared to iTunes

    Hi everyone,
    After re-syncing my phone the file sizes compared to what was showing on the colored bar at the bottom of iPhone tab in iTunes is much different than the actual sizes of the files synced onto my phone. Basically I added all of the file sizes of my apps on my phone with a calculator and got 1.05gbs but highlighting the Apps section on the colored bar it shows 3.44gbs(see photo). My music adds up to 3.63gbs but shows 4.73gbs on the colored bar.
    Now I can understand adding lyrics, album art & whatnot may change the music file size but I can't see how profiles, scores on games or whatever can add an additional 2.4gbs to my apps. Any idea on what's up with this?

    I have found the iTunes "Memory Bar" to be an estimate and also not too sure it is always the same picture-in-time as the iPhone data.  Do you have (forgive the pun) and Apples to Apples comparison of each App you are counting?  I share an Apple ID and iTunes with my granddaughter and as such I don't actually keep all the Apps on my iPhone that show up in iTunes.
