MBP sleeps unexpectedly, black screen shows " z z Z" I've NEVER seen before

I found plenty of posts on Macs NOT sleeping. I have the opposite.
About an hour ago, abruptly my screen went black except for three "Z"s in the middle, stacked lopsidedly. Seems pretty evident that it's put my MBP to sleep. I click the spacebar and return; it takes maybe 10-12 seconds to come back up (usually it's instantly when I hit it that quickly).
I checked my Sleep and Energy Saver settings. As usual: computer NEVER sleep, display sleep at 5 minutes. As it happened several times, I wondered if it were getting that 5-minute interval somehow. I upped it to 15 minutes, and it did "z z z" again, but at something like 17-18 minutes (hadn't noted the seconds), so that seems to rule out it getting some instructions from that preference.
The only plist I recognized as possibly involved: com.apple.preference.desktopscreeneffect.plist
Made no difference. It happened again just a few minutes after I moved that to the desktop. Does anyone have any ideas about some other plist to which this may relate?
I can't find ANYTHING online reporting this. And as a Machead since 1986, I don't recall ever seeing this kind of sudden sleep.
Recent installs: a week or two ago I did install a "Fireflies" screen saver, which is basically a more lively variation on Apple's "Flurry." I used it for a few days, no problem, then went back to something else. I did start it up again last night, but I had no problem then.
Still troubleshooting, I've changed my Energy Saver to "Never" for both computer and screen. As I'm typing this, the last "Z Z Z" happened over a half-hour ago.
And WHOA — for just a moment, right then, I saw a probably briefest-possible black screen — but it didn't continue to the "z z z."
Has anyone ever seen this happen? Any other plists or apps to suggest?
Thanks,
Chuck B

Heh, you read my mind on this. When I first started using Keynote I did deliberately pair it for only my MacBook, to PREVENT problems. Now I may undo that, because I can think of a few people with whom I might play around a little — who wouldn't mind the joke.
Of course, if, unlike me, they already know the remote does that, they'll probably just turn around and say "CUT IT OUT ALREADY."
Obviously you're way ahead of me on Mac stuff, so you probably already know ctrl-opt-cmd-8 as a toggle for reversing the screen colors, another funky little trick.

It was informative; eyetv does interface with the OS to wake the computer to record something and then put it to sleep, but I didn't have anything scheduled to record anything for days. I've updated EyeTV and removed all scheduled recording to see if that helps.

    Hi,
I would try a Safe Boot first.  (This will take longer than a normal Boot and you will need to Restart afterwards).
If it were an older OS I would also suggest going to System Preferences > Displays and making sure the display is set to Millions.  (My MacBook Pro does not have this option in Snow Leopard so I did presume Snow Leopard does not have it).
With some laptops there have been some issues with the cable up the back of the screen pulling loose with regular and frequent use of the lid, but this will not apply to you based on your specs.  (it does take time to appear and is also somewhat rare). However it seems enough contact with the camera can make it appear in System Profiler and power it on but not give a pic.
If a Safe Boot does not work I would also try a PRAM reset.
    Shut down the computer.
Restart it holding down Apple/CMD (or ⌘)+ALT( ⌥)+P+R Keys until you have heard three Start Up Bongs.
This is actually "less" destructive in that it clears less memory items than Safe Boot but they are different enough to warrant trying.
Do you have an older version of iGlasses installed ?
The one for Leopard does not work for Snow Leopard.
Do you have  Web Browser open ?
This may point to  Google Video Chat Plug-in and Flash Conflict.  It would be rare to allow another app to access the camera even if not displayiong a Pic.
(Chrome Installs the Plug-in as does the standalone download).
Knowing  what "any application" exactly you are trying might help us pin it down.
Any additional downloaded  apps that can use the camera ?
Do you happen to have something balck in front of the camera ?

    Hey User13579,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Follow these steps to attempt to resolve the issue.
    iPhone: Troubleshooting No SIM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4148
Toggle Airplane mode On and Off.
Try turning iPhone off and then on again.
Check for a carrier settings update. Tap Settings > General > About. If an update is available, a prompt will appear.
Remove the SIM Card and verify that it is a valid, carrier-manufactured SIM. Also verify that it is not damaged, worn, or modified. Then reinsert it.
    Restore the iPhone.
    Have a nice day,

  • Never seen before interface while cleaning screen in lock mode

Never seen before interface while cleaning screen in lock mode came up looking like player with some weird buttons.

Go into iPod and play a song. While it's playing, click the standby button to lock/standby your phone and again to wake it (locked), then press the menu button twice. (This should also work if you play a song, press menu once to return to the main menu, then click menu twice. If not, there's a setting to turn it on.)

  • Macbook pro (early 2011) won't boot after sleep. Black screen with chime

I put my macbook pro early 2011 (Quad, 8 Gb RAM, 2 x SSD-disks, external 27" LED-screen) into sleep mode a couple of days ago. Everything was fine then.
However, the morning after it wouldn't wake up - this is the bootup process:
    - Black screen
    - Chime
    - Still black screen, nothing happens.
So I've tried resetting NVRAM, SMC etc - no luck. Even tried the "Powerbutton" + "S" + Enter but to no avail. So I immediately began dd:ing my SSD-disk before trying anything else, figured it might be some preboot-corruption of some sort since I'm running FileVault2 with full AES-encryption.
Now, the problem (after some troubleshooting) doesn't seem to be disk-oriented. Remember the black screen? I've tried pulling the SATA-cables one by one on the motherboard of the Macbook pro and discovered that when I pulled the cable which reaches over the optical device (just above the SATA-cable for the optical device) then I get a white screen and I'm able to get as far as boot-option, or even disk repair (if I run my SSD-disk over USB and without any cables (three of them) attacked to the motherboard).
So since nothing works when I have disks connected or that third cable (some kind of logic board bridge? Reaches through the screen over to the other side of the mother board).
Also worth noting is that I was running out of free disk-space on my system disk. The disk is 250 Gb and free space was about 5-10 Gb (less than 5%). I also make the macbook pro dump contents of memory to disk (since my disk is encrypted it resides safely there).
So, my fear is that Apple hasn't used A-grade controllers for the disk drives (I've had drive corruption before, a Crucial 6 GB/s drive trashed less than a week before a presentation) and doesn't handle "unexpected events" nor signal/noise ratio very well. Maybe free space on disk was less than the 8 Gb needed to dump RAM (shouldn't have needed the full 8 Gb though) and this caused some kind of panic overwrite which trashed the controller?
Anyways, I've attached an image of the motherboard and I am wondering - what does the top cable which reaches over the optical drive do? Is it connected to the logic-board?

** The volume Macintosh HD could not be repaired.
Looks to me like a fatal error on the hard disk. IMHO, the only solution is to boot from an external device, reformat the hard drive, and restore from backup. If you don't have a backup, you're in trouble. Boot from the external device, try to mount the int'l drive, and, if successful, back up as much as possible. Also, try running Disk Utility—it may be possible to fix it while booted from a different device, thought I wouldn't bank on it. At any rate, make sure to run an AHT afterwards, to check for possible hardware issues with the drive.
If the machine is still covered by AppleCare, take it to the store by all means. But they won't try to recover anything from the int'l drive, just check it, erase it if they don't find hardware issues, and re-install a fresh copy of the OS.
That's why you should always have at least 1 up-to-date backup (2, with one kept off-site, is better).

  • MBP stuck on black screen, does anyone have any suggestions?

I have a MBP (MD311LL). it was functioning perfectly fine, when one day I went to use it and I get a black screen when it should be starting up. I can see the back light it on (the apple on the lid it lit) and the fans run for a few seconds, but nothing else is happening. I've tried different key combinations for the various resets, but nothing. I wanted to determine whether it was my screen or something more severe so I've tried logging in when the lock screen should be appearing and even put a movie in the disc drive. It just ate my movie...

    Try this:
    1. Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
        Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own"
    2.Reset PRAM. http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
If this doesn't help contact Apple.
    Best.

I thought before maybe its Bluetooth related as sometimes when screen would turn black and then come back, I would get a 'Bluetooth Device Not Discoverable'. So turned off Bluetooth in the BIOS, but still having display/sleep issues.
I removed hte Lenovo Power Manager/PM Driver, and turned off sleeping in the Windows power settings (in every setting including if Low Battery Action). Any ideas?
I just upgraded to a 3 year warranty (the more expensive one), should i just ask to replace mobo/cpu/memory again or will Lenovo actually test it for other issues?
    Thanks,

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Well my issue wasn't an external monitor... it would goto sleep by itself when Im trying to write code/programming... then randomly wake and go back to sleep up constantly ruining workflow (or wait a few hours Im sleeping at odd times in the morning lol). or the monitor would turn black suddenly. I think I tested via external monitor but didn't matter what result was, the random sleeping issues indicated a larger issue.
It was a crimped connector the 1st time it went back to Lenovo. the past 4/5 times its gone back i think they are stumped. For me, Im honestly not sure... it might be the OS is on a mSATA instead of the regular hard drive and Windows doesnt know how to handle that hardware.
Their newer W540 manual seems to indicate do an OS on mSATA at your expense.
Do you have an mSATA OS? Anyway, thats a very small chance. not sure.

My guess is that the iPad is not recharging. Check the power outlet, ry a different adapter, try a different cable, and/or clean the charging port of lint or other debris. Try a reset (Hold down the power and Home buttons together until the Apple logo is displayed, then release. No data or settings are lost.)

  • Please help ID a screen I've never seen before

OK, I'm working along this morning on effects in my Viewer. At some point I looked over at my Canvas and there is a frame from my project with the clip name overlayed at the top and the timecode overlayed on the bottom. Now, this is not the standard Time Code Overlay screen we see in under the Show Overlays pull down. This has the clip name at the top of the frame and the timecode was a single line in a bigger than usual type face. This was not the clip I was working on in the Viewer and the moment I clicked out of Viewer the screen disappeared, replaced by the frame on which my playhead rested. I've never seen the screen before. Have you?

My Macbook has a dialog box on the screen that indicates everything I do. Right now it says "Standard toolbar". When I try to get rid of it nothing happens. I've never seen this before and don't know ho to get rid of it.

This seems to be more common than I thought. Premanent solution is to trade the cat in on a dog.

  • MBP Nvidia Bootcamp black screen XP install

I have encountered a problem I haven't been able to find mentioned anywhere on the web.
    I have a Macbook Pro 3,1
    15" LED backlit version
Geforce 8600M gfx card 256MB ram
    2.4GHz intel
    2GB ram
The problem I'm having is when installing xp (only for certain games and autocad) the screen is black.
the apple support website mentions this for late 2006 24" iMac's and offers a fix, but there is nothing for macbook Pro's
should it be safe to use the iMac MXM update on my MBP, or does anyone have any other suggestions?

Just out of interest... was the screen completely black? or was there a very nearly black cursor blinking in the top left corner? I came across that last night when installing Arch onto an AMD Athlon 64 and 7300GS combo... I was using the free driver, and swapped to the nvidia-173xx driver and running nvidia-xconfig worked where Xorg -configure hadn't. The free driver was complaining about a module having a lock on my graphics card, or something similar (yeah, nice and vague ).
Although, being a relative newbie to Arch I could have just messed something up along the way. Tonight's project is to decide on and install a widow manager, so my X experience is more featured than just popping up a VLC client so I can watch a movie... look for some moronic posts in the newbie corner tomorrow

  • Upgraded to Maverick, now MBP 2011 has black screen while booting

I just upgraded from Mountain Lion to Maverick, and I am already regretting it. Upon installation, my MBP (2011) was running slow, so I restarted it. Now, when my Mac is trying to boot, the brightness is at (roughly) 25%, and I can barely see what's happening. It looks like the loading cursor is present onscreen. The good news is that I can hear the startup chime. However, after 10-15 seconds, the screen fades to black. When I press any key, I can hear the default error sound. I tried Command+R, but that didn't do anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Not sure what happened. Upon the umpteenth time restarting the laptop, the scree is now at 100% brightness. I was able to log in as well. All is good.
