MBP sleeps unexpectedly

My MBP is going to sleep and I don't want it to. (I want to leave EvoCam running.)
Energy Saver..Power Adapter...Sleep = Never.
(and "pmset -g" at the Terminal command line shows
sleep 0)
I'm using my MBP at home; it's plugged in to the wall.
PS I already read "MBP sleeps unexpectedly..." at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11193665&#11193665

The elgato/eyetv activity seems normal. I didn't find anything leading to a solution at the elgato/eyetv. It was informative; eyetv does interface with the OS to wake the computer to record something and then put it to sleep, but I didn't have anything scheduled to record anything for days. I've updated EyeTV and removed all scheduled recording to see if that helps.

  • MBP sleeps unexpectedly, black screen shows " z z Z" I've NEVER seen before

I found plenty of posts on Macs NOT sleeping. I have the opposite.
About an hour ago, abruptly my screen went black except for three "Z"s in the middle, stacked lopsidedly. Seems pretty evident that it's put my MBP to sleep. I click the spacebar and return; it takes maybe 10-12 seconds to come back up (usually it's instantly when I hit it that quickly).
I checked my Sleep and Energy Saver settings. As usual: computer NEVER sleep, display sleep at 5 minutes. As it happened several times, I wondered if it were getting that 5-minute interval somehow. I upped it to 15 minutes, and it did "z z z" again, but at something like 17-18 minutes (hadn't noted the seconds), so that seems to rule out it getting some instructions from that preference.
The only plist I recognized as possibly involved: com.apple.preference.desktopscreeneffect.plist
Made no difference. It happened again just a few minutes after I moved that to the desktop. Does anyone have any ideas about some other plist to which this may relate?
I can't find ANYTHING online reporting this. And as a Machead since 1986, I don't recall ever seeing this kind of sudden sleep.
Recent installs: a week or two ago I did install a "Fireflies" screen saver, which is basically a more lively variation on Apple's "Flurry." I used it for a few days, no problem, then went back to something else. I did start it up again last night, but I had no problem then.
Still troubleshooting, I've changed my Energy Saver to "Never" for both computer and screen. As I'm typing this, the last "Z Z Z" happened over a half-hour ago.
And WHOA — for just a moment, right then, I saw a probably briefest-possible black screen — but it didn't continue to the "z z z."
Has anyone ever seen this happen? Any other plists or apps to suggest?
    Thanks,
    Chuck B

Heh, you read my mind on this. When I first started using Keynote I did deliberately pair it for only my MacBook, to PREVENT problems. Now I may undo that, because I can think of a few people with whom I might play around a little — who wouldn't mind the joke.
Of course, if, unlike me, they already know the remote does that, they'll probably just turn around and say "CUT IT OUT ALREADY."
Obviously you're way ahead of me on Mac stuff, so you probably already know ctrl-opt-cmd-8 as a toggle for reversing the screen colors, another funky little trick.

  • Macbook late 2008 goes to sleep unexpectedly

I've started having problems with my MacBook a few months ago. It goes to sleep unexpectedly and sometimes it takes me 30 min to take it out of that state. I've tried utilities like Caffeine to prevent the sleep mode but nothing seems to work. The temperature is fine, the fans work (4,000 RPM) but something is wrong. I read on a few pages that it could be linked to the sensor that actually detects that the lid is closed and automatically puts the MacBook to sleep. I wish I could at least prevent the sleep mode from triggering since I cannot use my mac for work at the moment. I simply cannot rely on it. Any ideas?

Try a SMC reset which governs such things.

  • Sleeps Unexpectedly

[posted this previously, but in general imac group - apologies]
My G5 iMac goes to sleep unexpectedly, usually in the middle of something I don't want to interrupt. It does it
-when I burn audio CDs from iTunes (hour long mp3s)
-when I record audio input from an LP (but not when I record streaming audio from RealPlayer)
-on some heavy web pages (Disney stuff, w/ a lot of flash & audio)...
Pretty frustrating because it kills the tasks. Current theories are
    -cpu temperature
    -motherboard
    -reinstalling select system files
    Any ideas?

    I've probably already posted this to you somewhere else (the problem with multiple posts-more work and wasted time for us), but just in case;
A number of sleep-related issues can appear after incremental Mac OSX updates, including the inability to properly go to sleep, problems waking from sleep, and having your display go to sleep without your Mac going to sleep. The most common culprit is Bluetooth. Try these tips to fix your sleep problems.
    WAKE UP
In System Preferences>Bluetooth, uncheck Allow Bluetooth Devices To Wake This Computer. If you are using a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, you'll have to wake your Mac by pressing the power button.
    FILE CORRUPTION
Your Bluetooth preference file may be corrupt-you'll need to delete it. Turn Bluetooth off, then go to the /Users/user name/Library/Preferences folder. Look for a file called com.apple.Bluetooth.plist and trash it.The OS will create a new preference file when you enable Bluetooth again.
    ENERGY SAVER
If you have issues with a Mac or display that goes to sleep at inappropriate times, you may have a problem with Energy Saver. Delete the following .plist files and restart:
    -/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
-/Users/username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist--(username is your name or System Administrators name).
    -/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist
A restart is very important after deleting these plists. After a reboot your Mac will then generate new ones.
In some cases, running MacOS X's cron tasks-maintenance that the OS performs automatically if you leave your Mac on 24 hours a day-can resolve many sleep problems. If you don't want to leave your Mac on, you can use MacJanitor, Yasu, or OnyX free at Versiontracker.com.
As Tm311 said, make sure everything in Energy Saver is set to never.

  • Macbook sleeps unexpectedly ?

So for the past two months my Macbook likes to sleep unexpectedly. This happens at all different intervals and may go 2-3 days with no problem and then have 2-3 days with problems. It may go to sleep while taking notes in class and I'll wake it up once and it's fine for the rest of class or I may continually have to wake it up every 20sec-3minutes and finally give up the battle.
This problem ONLY occurs when running on the battery. When the cpu comes back from sleep I notice the battery has an X on it for .2-2seconds and then displays like normal. I have swapped batteries with my gf and the same problem occurs. I have done the SMC reset and it still occurs. I really don't get why it works fine plugged into the the power adapter?
I was wondering if anyone can help me diagnose this? I'm hoping and praying it isn't the logic board because this is an otherwise great cpu that I hate to replace. What are the chances it could just be the battery connector sleep sensor? Errr it really has me frustrated because I take all my class notes on the laptop and I can't depend on it unless I happen to catch a seat next to a power outlet

It sounds like something is wrong with the battery and it's telling the computer it's dead so it goes to sleep. Try another battery and see if the issue persists.

  • Transporting MBP: Sleep, Hibernation and dangers to hard disk

I used to transport my MBP by closing the lid and putting it in my backpack. Recently, however, it started to overheat when I do that. At first I thought it was some bug, maybe it hadn't gone to sleep properly. But then it happened again. I started to manually putting it to sleep before closing the lid, but no luck. It happened again. It happened 3 or 4 times in about 2 months and then the computer stopped working properly and I had to take it to professionals. They said I should NEVER put it in my backpack in sleep mode. Maybe if it's a 5min trip only, but not otherwise. They said the hard disk is not completely shut off in this mode and so carrying it around in movement may damage it. They checked my computer and said that indeed it was a hard disk problem, and that now that it was changed it's working fine. They said I should always shut it down before transporting it, which is a pain. (I live in Rio and it's above 30ºC most of the year, maybe that contributes to these heating problems, don't know…)
What annoys me is that I haven't found any official statement about it by Apple. I know people who never turn it off and even I did it without any problem for years with my previous MBP (well, in fact it died one day out of the blue and I have no clue why). Actually I can only assume based on discussions that the computer actually goes to sleep mode when I shut the lid, and I can only speculate about what this actually means because I haven't found any official information regarding it. I found that there's a mode called "hibernationmode 25" which is supposed to be essencially the same as shutting down the computer and saving the current RAM data to the hard disk. But I haven't found any official statement confirming this. I don't know if it really is as safe to carry it shut down as in this mode. Does anybody know where I can find official information about this? Or if there's any reliable way to contact Apple itself and actually get a reply?
    Thanks!

The Expert, Professional, you spoke to has NO clue. When any computer is put to Sleep, irrespective of what OS is installed (OS X or Windows) and what version of that OS, the only part that is supposed to be kept alive is the RAM and even that will go to sleep and dump it's contents onto the hard drive after an extended period of time if the system also has the hibernation mode set to do so. It then goes into a Deep Sleep state basically turning off completely.
I suspect what you are seeing it the system is trying to go from standard sleep mode to the Deep Sleep Hibernate mode and when that happens it must partially wake up to write the RAM data to the hard drive. At that point your system is not going back into either sleep mode or the Deep Sleep mode and that is when it heats up.
There are also many reports of Mac's of all ages crashing when trying to wake up from sleep and most of the time this is after it has gone into the Deep Sleep state and when you try to wake it the system doesn't or can't put back into the RAM the data that was written to the hard drive causing the system to hang and force a hard shutdown and restart.
I personally solve that problem by turning off the Hibernate system and deleting the Sleep Image file that is used to store the RAM data. So my MBP never going into that Deep Sleep state and I have never had a problem waking it whether after a few minutes or a day or so of being asleep. And it has never woken up on its own in my computer bag.
But to answer your question, statement from that Professional, the hard drive turns off completely when the system is put to sleep.

  • Disk Utility verification says my HD is corrupt, MBP shutdowns unexpectedly

    Hello,
I just purchased my MBP in February and am ****** to be running into a problem only five months in owning the machine. I'm a little frantic right now as I am in South Africa for study abroad and do not have my installation disks with me (left them at home in Los Angeles). I ran the disk utility after the software update for the latest OS X 10.6.4 software last month and it reported that my hard drive has been corrupted. It instructed me to insert the installation disk to repair the drive, but I as I said before I do not have them. What can I do? Also, yesterday the computer shutdown twice unexpectedly. Will my hard drive crash? What is the best solution to resolve this problem?
    Help!

Roger, no way to know for sure without booting from the Install disk or another Volume and running DU from there, but is it possible Verification, since "live," is unreliable and producing spurious errors?
There's no reason why it should: it's doing exactly the same thing as in fsck -fy, but of course it can't write to the directory while the disk is in use.
ZahraN: You could try booting into Safe Boot by holding down the shift key at the chime. Give it time, it will be checking and repairing the disk.
This is exactly the same process as fsck -fy so it doesn't matter which you do - though you get a report on what is going on with fsck -fy - and with 'exit' you can continue to boot directly into OSX rather than doing a complete reboot.
(While in Safe Boot, might as well do Repair Permissions -- not your problem, but can't hurt -- then boot back normally.)
As you say, this isn't actually likely to affect the problem: it can also be done during normal boot, though it's efficacy really applies when installations have taken place.

  • MBP sleep while connected to external monitor

I couldn't find the answer to this anywhere: when I have the MBP connected to an external monitor in closed lid mode, is it ok to keep my screen saver/sleep settings, i.e. it'll sleep after 15 minutes of inactivity? Will it wake up as it normally would tapping any external keyboard key?

Yes, that's fine. Once you are in clamshell mode, letting it go to sleep, then pressing a key on the external keyboard will wake it up in clamshell mode again. You won't leave clamshell mode until you disconnect the external display.
    Hope this helps...

  • What is better for a fast MBP sleep or shutdown

    Hi
is it okay to shutdown the computer instead of sleep like 4 time in 24 hours?
I would like to know what's best for the MBP. because I shut it down like once every three days or so. But when I leave it sleeping a lot of times I come and find it dead and needs to be plugged. So I'm thinking of shutting it down more often to save the battery.
    what do you think?
    P.S. running Lion OS X 10.7.2

If the computer will not be used for more than 8 hours then it would be better to shut it down and save power. Otherwise, use sleep. However, if you will leave the computer near an AC outlet then connect the AC adaptor. Use the battery when you cannot connect to an AC outlet.

  • MBP Sleep or Shutdown which should I be choosing?

I recently read a section of the book OSX Missing Manual and it mentioned that cycling a Macs power was rarely required. Being a recent convert from the world of Windows I have always powered off my laptop at the end of the day and powered it on again when needed and I have been doing the same with my MBP.
Is it really advisable to put my MBP to sleep rather than shutting down even if I will be transporting the MBP to and from the office?

A couple of things to consider:
    1) Regardless of how great OS X is there are memory leaks and problems with apps. Eventually a reboot is a good thing. But OS X is great that way in that it will run for weeks before a reboot might even help.
    2) For me I go from just a laptop at home to plugging in a 20" Dell flat screen and a keyboard/mouse at work. My MacBookPro doesn't always wake up from sleep nicely in this configuration. Sometimes it has presented me with a blue screen but no log in prompt. One time I even had to power down then reboot to get anywhere. I've never had this happen just as a laptop waking from sleep.
    3) If you plan to travel on an airplane I would HIGHLY recommend a shutdown. Here is way. Most airplane cabins are pressurized and present no problems to humans or computers. However a friend of mine was on a flight that experienced pressurization difficulties. For a short time the cabin rose to almost 10,000 feet before the pilots got it under control. Several elderly people passed out etc. His Window XP laptop had just been put to sleep but something woke it up and started the disk spinning. Disk heads are designed to "fly" over the disk on a micro-cushon of air. At 10,000 feet the air was too thin and the head could not fly. It scraped the disk and tore the heads off the drive. (Rare occurance yes... Do I recommend not using a laptop on a plane while in flight, absolutely not, but when you are done shut it down that way you know for sure your disk is not spinning accidentally while you are boarding, loading and unloading).
This is also a warning for private pilots. I fly regularly and most aircraft I have access to will do 12,000 to 15,000 feet but are not pressurized so I carry O2. But I had a girl along for a ride from Fort Collins to Wenatchee Washington one time who at 12,000 feet was bored and wanted to use her laptop. I caught her just in time before she ran the risk of destroying it.
Anyway these are just my thoughts. I love the concept of sleep but sort of don't trust it fully. That's probably my Windows paranoia coming out.

  • Possible to turn off MBP Sleep Light?

The sleep light on my MBP is bright. The pulsing can actually wake me up. Is it possible to turn it off?
The iMac G5 got a "Sleep Indicator Light" update that turns it off at night. I'm not sure if it's configurable or not, but even if it's not, the MBP could use the same update.
    Thanks.
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

The solution is quite easy... actually the same for getting that nasty blinking "12:00" off your VCR
    Place electrical tape over it...
But seriously - you may want to go to an auto parts store - they sell "chrome tape pinstriping".
Cut out the pinstriping to the size of the button, and you have your solution.
Or you can go to your local vinyl shop and find someone to cut one for you (then mass produce it for you) and sell it to other MBP users that want the same thing... wait, no I'm going to do that PATENT PENDING!!!!!

  • TM backup when MBP sleep mode?

My TM didnt backup when the MBP went to sleep.  It said it had to be formatted in OSX journaled.  But, it backs up perfectly when the MBP is on?  Not sure what is happening.

Open System Preferences > Energy Saver and look for a setting for Power Nap.
If it's there, enable Power Nap to have the Mac backup when it is sleeping.
If the setting is not there, check this Apple Support document to see if the feature can be enabled on your computer, and for more general information about this feature.

  • MBP Sleep Issues

recently purchased a mbp 2.33ghz laptop and things were great. now, it seems whenever i close the lid, the led light never pulses, but rather stays solid. then, when i open the lid, the screen is dark and will not wake up. however, the keyboard seems responsive and i can hear volume noises when pressing the volume up/down keys. if i try and go to sleep from the apple command thing, the screen goes black but stays lit, and freezes with a spinning colorwheel. the only way i have found to recover the computer is by holding down the power button and restarting it. this is beyond frustrating. any help would be much appreciated.

You might like to try resetting the PRAM.
On restarting, press and hold the following keys till you hear a second chime, after which you can release them.
    Apple + Option + P + R
This process should reset the Pram to it's default state. If the problem persist you might have to return it to Apple.

Neither closing the display lid nor clicking sleep in the apple-menu will put my mbp to sleep. The sleep-light comes on (after a few seconds) but does not blink.
