MBP slow speeds to Netgear DG834GT

Hey,
I'm having a small issue regarding the transfer speeds of files across a network I have set up. As it stands copying stuff from my brothers laptop to my MBP seems to be capped at around 160k/sec (courtesy of the activity monitor), wheras another wireless laptop will transfer at about 5mb/sec.
All I've done to connect to the network is turned airport on and then chucked in the password for the network et voila!
I noticed in "Internet Connect" that I can set up 802.1x but thought it best to leave it alone as I;m already connected to the internet fine!
My signal strength seems to be healthy. Anyone got any ideas?
Cheers!

After some sniffing about it seems Im not the only one with this problem!
Found this extremely informative thread:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2230650&#2230650
But Unfortunately my issues dont lie as closely with my Internet but my general transfer speeds between other machines and my MBP!

  • Netgear DG834GT with TC

    Hi,
I'm waiting for my new MacBook to be delivered and in the meantime I have been thinking about my internet setup.
At the moment I have my Mac Mini connected directly to my ISPs Netgear DG834GT router as this will obviously give me a faster connection than using the Mini wireless. As I will be getting a MacBook I won't have it connected directly to my router so in theory I'm going to experience much slower internet connection as the router is only WiFi 'g' rated.
Now, would I benefit from getting myself a TC and connecting it to the router and then using the TC as a wireless access point for my MacBook as both are WiFi 'n' rated?
I will be using the MacBook in the same room as the router/TC 99% of the time.
    All advice gratefully received.
    Kind regards,
    Mark.

    Hmm...
Maybe it's just my Mac Mini then as I have done that test in the past as when I first got my Mac Mini I was connecting wirelessly which was OK, but once I switched to having the Mini connected directly to the router via ethernet my internet and download speeds were a lot faster.
I think my worry is that my previous experience using my Mini wirelessly and my internet connection being 'slow', I'm just concerned that I'll have the same issues when I get my new MacBook. I wasn't sure if perhaps it was to do with it only being 'g' certified and the Mini also.
My speed connected on my Mini just now was around 11 Mb/s and wirelessly it was around the same... weird! It was definitely slower wirelessly in the past! My mistake!
On that note then, will having the TC utilising the 'n' grade provide me with any benefits?

  • Multiple devices on WiFi...slow speed

In our household, we have 2 iPads, 2 iPhones, a Mac Pro laptop, Apple TV and a primary machine that is connected to the Internet via an AT&T modem and distributes the WiFi signal throughout via an older style Airport Express (the flat, round-edged square thing rated at 802.11ac wireless) that replaced the triangular round spaceship model (rated at 802.11abgn). And after years of going back and forth with AT&T complaining about near dial-up speed (while paying for the maximum tiered speed level), I'm at my wit's end. Sometimes I get absolutely NO signal at all.
When I check my speeds using Speedtest, it fluctuates from 1.32 MBps Download Speed (on rare occasion) and 0.32 Mbps Upload, to 0.29 DL and 0.24 UL (more the average).  I've had no less than 8 AT&T techs out and they've all checked the wiring, the connections, and nothing. One was honest enough to tell me that I was paying for the top tier pricing for speeds for nothing because it's impossible due to the distance and route the lines come to my house from the main station.
So I'm thinking of buying the latest Airport Express Base Station which promises 3x's faster transmission BUT (I was told), if I have any device that uses the slower protocol, it sticks to that.
Another idea I had is to wire up two leads from the telephone box—one that goes to the primary computer (that has the modem and base station), and another line on the other side of the house that will have my old base station. We can simply connect via Ethernet into that.
One last thing...I have an old, 1912 house that has lathe and plaster walls that I've heard reduces WiFi signals substantially. Let me know if I'm WAY off the mark.
    Thanks for listening.

    OK folks, here's the scoop...
I tried configuring the devices as directed, but I could not find the same interface as shown in your provided screen shots.
    But here's something weird...
Since my initial post, I purchased some music instructional materials and tutorials that included some PDFs as well as some Mp3s totalling about 46MBs. The seller had me go to a 3rd-party e-commerce site  he uses after I paid through Paypal, etc. It's all legit. He's a well-known YouTube-based instructor.
So I begin the download process after receving a direct download link and at about the 2.8 - 3MB mark the transmission goes dead in the download process. I tried to download several times, and even switched browsers (from Firefox to Safari) and both hung up and froze at the same point. Unfortunately, this e-commerce site does not allow more than 5 download attempts — so after the 5th time, I was screwed.
I then email the instructor telling him about never actually getting the files, so he sends me everything via email instead.
I open his emails and 46MBs worth of files download in less than 15 seconds!
I have no idea why the browsers are hanging. I've tried flushing the caches, restarting, etc., but I'm still getting the same hangup/freeze issues, yet emails come through at lightning speed.
Any clues as to why this would be?
Just to reiterate...I'm using an iMac running 10.6.8, 2.8 GHz Intel Core with 4GB SDRAM and I have the OS Firewall set to Off.

  • Bt infinity 2 slow speeds and disconnection

hi all hi all after having spent over two hours on the phone with BT being passed from post to post from billing to technical support back to billing people slamming phones down on me and no  help what so ever today 22/05/2014 have been with bt over 5 years phone  line the broadband and all services
    it a joke now
2012 I have had fibre optic broadband service with BT and all was ok till November 2013 when start have slow speeds and in January year 2014 started having disconnections reconnection connections form 5 mins to to 60mnis or sum times 2mins  of the broadbands and the connections sometimes 3 to 4  times a day disconnections and so on .... when was supposed to be fixed the upload speed was very slow and the download speed was okay when I first started with BT with the fibre-optic broadband two years ago nearly I was averaging about 42 meg per day and average speed of upload was 6.5 Mag
but now 32.meg dowm /up is 3.5 Rwent off in February he did a shift in lift because the broadband was 42 meg download bought lacked upload speed of less than half meg for the day of the lift it ran at 52 meg  with an average upload speed of about seven meg from around February till the end of February then stat act erratically reboot the bt hub 4 rebooting all time DSL light off on the main openreach modem in one day was off and on 36 times
had  engineers visit last week 14th of May to test line all was ok with line but i had now found out that bt they'll are now only selling me option one broadband fibre-optic even though I am paying for option two they now states that the speed on my line will never go above 36 meg so why am I paying for option 2 fibre-optici be through to the billing department today said yes you are an option 2 but  the technical department to say my line will only support 36 meg and I did find out from the engineer that I am on option one and only for the supply of the broadband line but have been pay for BT infinity option2
I think this is just an easy way for BT to get out of fixing the mind correctly by downgrading the line but wanting the customer to carry on paying for option to have tried with billing to sort this problem out today they just said you need to speak to technical support technical support what support manages to say you need to speak to billing one of them even slammed the phone on me
No customer support spent over two hours on the phone today and got nowhere and one department saying we can downgrade you to option one broadband but it will cost you £30 to do so
who i speak to if billing are no help at all ??????

  • Slow speed Enhanced - can't connect router/modem

After speed slipped to 0.2 to 1.5 MBPS with current router I convinced Indian contact to send me new router. It would not connect to any of my MAC/apple products. Returned to original router and continued to face slow speeds daily. Today was .12 MBPS. Must go to reliable internet service soon!! Any suggestions??

What is the brand and model of your current router?

  • Slow Speed Tests

Hay everyone I have an AirPort extreeme located in my front room about 15 feet from my bedroom. In the bedroom I have an iMac 27" mid-2011 model. I have been running speed tests from speedtest.net and have been getting very slow download rates, any where betwee 1.4 and 5.0 mbps. I pay for a 25 mbps speed. I have full signal strength everywhere in the house the speed is just terrible. Does anyone know how I can increses the speed of that computer. I have changed the channel to one that is not used as much in my area, as I looked at iStumbler. Also if I sit in the room next to the router I get 10 - 15 mbps. Any help would be amazing. Thanks.
PS I also have an AirPort express set to extend the network in the bedroom where I am having the slow speed.

I'm not able to provide a solution though I too find that the AE is not as fast as it is supposed to be. At one time I had a Belkin Wireless and an ADSL connection that topped out at 1.5MB/sec. Now I have a 50MB/sec internet connection and honestly, I have seen an increase in my speed over wireless but the Belkin really seemed quite zippy! I play World of Warcraft and I remember someone saying to me that AE or our Macs have Firewalls set-up that we don't know about or "something" that limits the speeds of the connections - which PCs and non-Apple products do not. Constantly see when downloading new patches from WOW, messages that I am behind a firewall - when I do not have firewall set on the AE nor on my Mac...

  • Very slow speeds and ridiculous email and bill for...

    Hi
i have several issues. I have been a very satisfied customer for over 15 years until early summer of this year:
    1. My broadband speeds remain painfully slow despite 3 complaints and investigations. In fact my line is still connected to the test line as I was advised to do and I have never had a call back as promised.
    2. I have now received an email message to say I have used 90gb at a cost of £50. This is almost all uploads. i upload nothing and this figure is impossible. Until June my usage was quite small and I came nowhere near my limit on option 2. Nothing has changed with my usage since then. I do not download or stream films and do not upload large quantities. I probably would stream films, but the slow speed does not allow it.
    3. I spent over an hour on the phone trying to sort this out today, but was not helped by a succession of people who barely understood the situation and had even less understanding of customer service. I have now emailed, but have had a message saying it might be 72 hours before a reply.
Any advice would be really helpful as I am at my wits end
    Solved!

Ok....since the original post the problem has continued. I have spent literally hours on the phone to people who say all the same things and never come up with a solution.
The test results are below. I do not experience speeds as reported. And if I use another tester it correctly comes out as about 1 4 - 1.9. or even lower. The upload usage is still showing as high....but it is just not possible. I have now reset the hub wireless key, but I have not shared this with anyone in range. Apple TV is now disconnected after it was going to take 20 hours to download a film!
I am at my wits end with this and really do not want the hassle of changing provider but even after 20 years BT broadband I am so very close to that.
    Any ideas would be appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Reset hub and now getting extremely slow speeds...

    Hi there,
So I have had bt broadband for 3 months and had nothing but problems. The speed is very slow, though I do live in a rural area so somewhat to be expected. However in the evenings I have noticed I can get extremely high pings (1000+) and slow speeds (below 0.5 mbps).
Recently however my usual daytime speeds of around 1.2 mbps shot up to around 3 mbps, which to me is quite high! (compared to what I have been getting).
Though it dropped off a bit over the past few days (to around 2.2 mbps) it was still working ok, until last night when I reset my homehub as my sister was unable to connect to it at all.
Since then I have had nearly none existant speeds. Even getting on here was a mission. I am getting speeds of around 0.10 mbps, though my ping seems to vary wildly from around 50 all the way back up to silly numbers.
I attempted to use the bt speed test, but it told me it couldn't get a reading cos my line was too slow!
I did however get one eventually from BT wholesale as below. (it won't let me copy it in?...)
    Download speed (mbps): 0.14
    Upload speed (mbps): 0.35
    Ping Latency (ms): 69.63
    Speedtest.net give the following
Really getting fed up with the unreliable and slow connection. When added to the problems getting a line installed in the first place (it took 3 months!) and problems I have had in the past, I am seriously looking to see what other options I have, but there aren't many good providers that will set us up out here
Can anyone help me get a stable, reasonably fast connection?
    Thanks,
    Richard

I currently have the hub connected to the master socket via a filter. I have tried on the main socket and master socket with two different filters and nothing changed...
As for the btspeedtester, I was unable to successfully run that...It just says my connection may be too slow (no kidding!)
Finally, regarding the quiet line test...I don't actually have a phone at the moment. I only wanted broadband as I rarely make phone calls from the house and use my mobile. I am looking to get one for the sole purpose of fixing this issue (and ringing bt to have a whinge at them)

  • SLOW speeds after sw update - Novatel 4G LTE router with voice

My device auto-updated to sw 2.0 and ever since am getting 1-3 Mbps up/down. Prior to the sw update, I was getting "normal" LTE speeds ranging from 15-25 Mbps up/down.
Verizon processed a replacement (was brand new, swapped in-store) with same experience. Speeds were normal but after a few minutes of being powered on, the router auto-updates to 2.0 and slow speeds thereafter.
Phone front line has been nice but since this device is so new hoping posting here with get the attention of someone to correct this issue. Swapping for replacement devices isn't solving the problem.
Anyone else? Ideas for a fix?

Ok, I just followed JoeL and am awaiting approval. For reference, see the image of 3 speed tests this morning conducted on an LTE iPad. No other devices are connected to the router.
connected to the wireless network broadcast by the Verizon 4G LTE router - 0.6 down/up, unacceptable
connected straight to the Verizon LTE network - 34 down / 9 up, fine
    home wireless network
The 1st test should look very similar to the 2nd since both are using the Verizon LTE network

  • Slow speeds for the past 2 weeks

For the past 2 weeks I have been having very slow speeds. At first I thought it was the westell modem which kept powering down, rebooting every 30+ mins or would save the network settings. Purchase a new modem still have the slow speed minus the constant reboots and loss of settings.

Your line isn't in a very good shape to be running on the 1.5Mbps-3Mbps package. As it stands, you barely have enough capacity to support even 1/3 of the 1.5Mbps provisioning. There's simply too much noise.
What you should do first is take one of your modems out to your NID, if you have access to one and plug it into the test jack found inside of the NID. If there is a telephone plug already inserted into it, remove it to gain access to the jack (this will disconnect your home's wiring until you reconnect it). From there, sync up the modem and post up the new Transceiver Statistics you obtain.
Have your speeds been at 1.5-3Mbps in the past? That would also help us. Lastly, if you have Voice Service with Verizon, do you have any noise on your line, such as humming, buzzing, loud static or popping?

  • New Contract -- Very Slow Speeds--900kbps

Hi Everyone, i am glad to find a community service like this.
I have been a BT Broadband customer since the start, BT has always been a good reliable service.  For approx two years I had the unlimited 8meg service that included a mobile phone.  BT Anywhere.  I phoned BT to cancel the mobile phone, during the call I was told i was paying too much for my service and if i signed up to Option 3 up to 20 meg BB i could save £20 I Did, I was promised no changes to my speed. This new contract started on the 31 Aug. No problems until last week.
On my old 8meg contract i could guarantee speeds of 2500-3000kbps during the day and 5000kbps after 12am. The last 5 days all I can get is 900kbps, at any time, trying multiple routers etc .... I am not sure if this change is tied into my contract.  I normally use a Netgear DG router which reports a downstream of 5000+.  To show stats and to test i am using my HomeHub.  Any suggestion/help what has caused the slow speed all of a sudden would be greatly appreciated.
I phoned Customer Service...and to be honest i did not get an answer just unplug this ..unplug that ..etc no changes. An engineer was booked for next month, not sure what they will do.

  • Slow speeds on Infinity

    Hi guys,
I am hoping that someone will be able to explain to me my lack of speed with BT Infinity. When this was first installed in November I was enjoying fast internet browsing, downloading and streaming speeds. Using speedtests I was getting approx. 35Mb for download, however this has now diminished to a lowly 0.5Mb or less. I have applied for the new faster BT Infinity from when I first received it and am seeing no different to the speed.
I have a slightly unusual set-up at home in that the BT Home Hub 3 is located in a room downstairs connecting to 3 devices and the 1GB port is connected to a Linksys Router upstairs which is connecting 2 PC's. I am using this set-up at the moment as I cannot afford to purchase a switch, this set-up was working fine before even with my previous broadband provider.
I have tried to set the wireless set-up for dual band and this seemed to cause more problems and have since moved back to single band for the wireless however, I'm still struggling to maintain the speeds that I had back in November.
I set a twitter message to BT and was asked to run their speedtest which indicated I was getting 0Mbps for download and 0.37Mbps for upload and also similar speeds from the thinkbroadband and speedtest websites. I'm now at a loss as to what I need to do in order to get my speeds back up as to what they were originally.
Any help on what I can try will be much appreciated.
    Kind regards,
    Jiten

I no longer have the IP profile for that particular instance, however I have run the test again today and this is the IP profile from the BT speedtest:
IP Profile for your line is - 77.43 Mbps
I seem to still have a slow speed on Infinity even though the IP profile is much higher than what it was when I ran the test earlier.
    Any ideas?

What does the GigE port do on my BT Home Hub 3?
On the back of your Hub 3 you have four yellow Ethernet ports that allow you to connect devices to the Hub. Port 4 is labelled as GigE.
GigE or Gigabit Ethernet is the way we talk about the technology for transmitting data at a rate of a gigabit per second (or 1,000 megabits per second). That's ten times faster than the other three ports, which transmit data at 100 megabits per second.
If you've got BT Infinity then this allows devices that are connected to the GigE port to receive data at the same speed as it is received from the fibre connection.
If you've got BT Broadband then you can use the GigE port to connect big, fast hard drives known as Network Attached Storage devices. You can then use these drives to stream films and music to other devices that are connected to the other Ethernet ports or which connect to the Hub wirelessly.
