MBP Slowed so much after upgrade, added RAM, now it crashed many times
Hi,
My MBP slowed so much righted away after I upgraded to OS X Mavericks, I upgraded to 16GB RAM as suggested, and the problem of slow got resloved, but now it crashed all the time, totally crased over 10 times within couple days(only few hours of using), I am pasting my MBP info here, please help to identify the crashing problem, is it the bad RAM? or some program caused it? I brought my 16GB RAM at macsales.com.
This was my old thread:
https://discussions.apple.com/message/23847638#23847638
I use VM Ware. The crash only tell me "your computer had a problem" or something like that, but it won't say which program caused it. Sometimes I was using firefox, it got crashed, sometimes when I try to open VM Ware, it crashed, sometimes, I leave my MBP there, it crashed itself.
The following is my computer info. Thank you very much for your help!

Why does my MBP slow down throughout the day?
If I reboot my MBP it will run very fast, nice and zippy. But as the hours go on it seems to slow down to a crawl. I am noticing this in particualr in PS where I can run a program called Portraiture (for example) that will run almost instantly after a reboot and then hours later will take as much as 25 or 30 seconds to run.
The only thing that I have noticed is it does seem to correspond (possibly) with an external hard drive I attach to it frequently. I did this morning again and noticed it starting to slow shortly after. Ejecting the disk and unplugging it doesn't help, but ejecting it, unplugging and rebooting does help. (Though I don't kow if it is just the reboot that is helping and not neccesarily the disk) This ext HD is one that was used with my PC and is now being used to transfer files from the old PC to the new Mac. Could this be the problem? Have you ever heard of this being an issue?
I just used a tool called the band aid tool- this is something that is used for retouching. When using this tool it is typically instant but just now it took about 45 seconds for it to do it's job. I looked at the activity monitor and it was showing only 2% memory usage at the time.
This seems a bit odd to me.
MBP, Lion, 2.3GHZ, 8GB RAM.Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
* Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
See:
* [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
* Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
* Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit") -
MBP slow after Mavericks upgrade?
Ever since installing Mavericks (or maybe it's unrelated, who knows) my MBP just seems sluggish. My impression is that the sluggishness is related to disk IO. I've thought about upgrading to an SSD since I know that would help, but I think it would jsut be masking whatever the underlying issue is here (barring hardware failure). Below is my EtreCheck output. Any ideas?

Why on earth is my (fairly new) mbp slowing down
I purchased 15" mbp last September... am running 10.6.6
it's always slowing dow now.. and I get that **** color wheel that spins and spins... and while it's spinning I can't switch apps or do anything else.. this really drives me nuts -- and ****** me off.. didn't expect this malfunction from a machine that cost me as much as this one did... :-(
machine has 4GB RAM... I have done the disk permission thing, it fixes problem somewhat, but doesn't last long, after just a day or two the color wheel is back.. one time it got fixed with the sw update, but that also didn't last more than a week.. this *****.. what is causing this malfunction please... I thought after I switched from pc to mac I wouldn't have to deal with this kind of problem any more.. ha... I guess the joke's on me....thank you all for your responses.. I restarted after I posted this.. and then everything was cool again.. of course it's nothing but a good old memory problem....;-) I now use the Activity Monitor, I have it in dock and open it all the time to monitor memory usage.. before I was just keeping apps open for ever, always had lots of apps open (including Photosop and Adobe Bridge... Firefox also consumes a lot if you have lots of tabs open..) I had just thought that 4GB of memory was more than it was, I guess.. I had a pc before I purchased this MBP, also with 4GB of memory, and as far as I remember it never slowed down like this.. (but well, it was a Vista machine, and god knows I had so many other problems w/it.. it was a total nightmare....;-)
so I gues now I just manage the memory situation better and it seems ok... if I had known this I would have purchased the MBP with 8GB of memory (sometimes I use Photoshop extensively, for days.. something I haven't done yet since last restart... so situation seems fine for now...;-)
I also wanted to ask, can anybody recommend where I can buy the best/cheapest memory online? (it's cheaper online, yes?) unfortunately my MBP comes with two chips of 2GB instead of one of 4GB (why do they do this??) so I have to buy two chips of 4GB... it's a 15" MBP running 10.6.8, was purchased last September....
and to person who mentioned the Desktop clutter issue: I'm very adamant about not keeping clutter and junk on the Desktop.. I even have a little app called TinkerTool (that of course I found out about here..;-) that I use to config sys so screenshots land in a folder of my choosing inside Documents folder....
thank you very much... -

It pops up when I open files, it pops up when I open windows, it pops up when I close apps, it pops up when I open apps, etc., etc., etc. I've tried everything and can't get it to stop. And to make matters worse, I'm having the exact same problem on my 2010 iMac. It's driving me nuts.

MBP slower loading web pages with Safari
Is there a 'learning' period for Safari on the MBP (2.0 dual-1G ram). The pages seem to be much slower than my PBG4. The Aple sight is painfully slow.
Otheer activities seem about the same or just a slight bit faster to open. The only "break in" period isn't related to Safari, but when Spotlight is indexing it may slow things down a bit for an hour or two after you first boot up or xfer a bunch of files to the machine.
Other than that, Safari should run super fast. Check a couple of things:
1) Make sure you didn't install any non-universal plug-ins.
2) Choose "Get Info" for Safari and make sure "Open using Rosetta" is NOT checked.
3) Empty the cache.
4) Try resetting Safari. -
Hello, I have an early 2011 MBP (15-inch), system report below:
MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2011)
Processor: 2 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory: 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Startup Disk: Macintosh SSD
Graphics: HD Graphics 3000 512 MB
Lately, my MBP has been slowing down a lot.
I tested out a bunch of flash sites, but it does not seem to be the problem. Like I said, I have 16gb of RAM (combined with what I have located above, i7, etc), and have had numerous flash sites up, but no slowdown. The problem is recent, in that I've noticed it in the past 6 months. Nothing changed in that period at all to cause this problem.
I've run this setup for a couple years without issue (SSD where the DVD player used to be, and the HDD where the old HDD was located), without issue.
My MBP gets so hot that I have to move it frequently for scare of erythema eb igne (stupid technical term, but I might not be joking, and would rather not joke around about something like that.but seriously it get that hot where your only option is to shut off the MBP. I know that might sound extreme. But my MBP gets that hot. Especially if you are running a program like Premiere. I understand the power and RAM that it takes to run a program like that, but it was shocking. This is a program (Premiere) I ran without problems previously..
Checking activity monitor (and iStat), RAM does not seem to be the issue. CPU seems fine 88-90% usage,
Usually have 7-8GB of RAM available, and the CPU usage under 90%.
I have no idea, but I will be taking a can of compressed air to the MBP.
I was just wondering if anyone had any other ideas or had similar situations to help me out?
Thank You,
TWhen you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created. -
MBP slow performance post upgrade
My MBP has become brutally slow since upgrading to 10.7 from 10.6. My daughter is experiencing the same issues.
MBP, 2.2G Icode I7
16 Gig Ram
1TB hard drive
I ONLY upgraded to gain some application support.
I have a FEELING that this problem stems from manufactures making their apps SLOW to make the users upgrade hardware!
Comments?Sorry, she's at college; I've been using Macs since they first came out.
My first computer was an Apple ][+.
I work in IT.
I need a real answer, not something out of the playbook please.
Engineering?
Or is my knee jerk reaction correct? New hardware?
BTW, I had to do a total reload when I upgraded to 10.7. Seems this is a typical problem????? 10.7 is problem release? Like Windows 95 and Windows ME? -
My MacBook Pro (2 yrs old), is MUCH slower on our wifi network, than my imac (5 yrs old)>
How can this possibly be?
thanksI measured the speeds by using them at the same time. The MBP was not loading pages, or the ones it was loading were taking FOREVER. While the imac was breezing through pages. Apple.com for example.
This is not a new issue, i've noticed it in the past.
Also, updating apps. The MBP was taking an absurdly long time, while the imac breezed through it. -
MBP slow after startup after Time Machine restore process.
Hello all,
I have a 2.4 ghz MBP and was dual booting Ubuntu hardy and Leopard using the rEFit boot manager. I got tired of Ubuntu and decided to go back to a single OS. I reinstalled OS X erasing all data on the HDD, and then restored from a Time Machine back-up. Since then, start-up is very slow. I get a bright white/grey screen that last about 6-10 seconds before the apple logo appears and the chime sounds. I thought it might be a bad TIme Machine back-up so i tried a different one. I had no luck with this method, or repairing disk permissions etc. in Disk Utility.
What is causing this change in start-up time?
Can i fix it?
Any help is much appreciated THANKS!!I know it may sound goofy, but worth a try...
Many times after erasing my Windows / Bootcamp partition I experienced extremely slow startups. What I found to fix that was to open System Preferences -> Startup Disk and make sure your Mac OS X is selected for the default to startup your system. Anytime I experienced this problem, Mac OS X was not selected.
Hope it works for this also. -
MBP slow startup after Yosemite update
Since I updated Yosemite to 10.10.3 on my MBP (late 2013, 2.3GHz i7, 16GB) it is much slower to startup (4 times longer) and the wi-fi is constantly dropping. Is there anything I can do?
Select Macintosh HD as the Startup Disk.

After installing 10.10, my MBP 2.4GHz, 4GB RAM is dreadfully slow. I have 200+GB of drive space left. The slowness is many forms. It boots noticeably slower, It launches apps slower, The apps themselves are laggy, and internet browsing is slower in safari and firefox.
An example of lag in apps would be Vienna when moving from one news article to another there I now get the pinwheel. MS word lags behind my typing. This did not happen before the upgrade.
Internet pages now have several seconds of lag before they even start to load. Even pages already visited.Same issue for me. 2010 MBP, 4gb RAM with more than 200GB of free space left on the 500GB HDD. Installed Yosemite yesterday in the afternoon and have been experiencing the pinwheel pretty much with every single click of the trackpad regardless of which program I'm using, even in system preferences, even doing something as simple as clicking to type in a text field.
There's also quite a long delay between hitting, for example, the volume keys and having the graphic display on the screen and iTunes will freeze up every few seconds when playing a song.
Internet is noticeably slower as well, which is only made more painful by the pinwheeling every time I try to do anything within the browser itself.
I have done everything in those macmachines articles short of actually reinstalling the OS altogether, and it still hasn't solved the problem. -
I'm experiencing some odd behavior from my MBP. It's a new 13" and it's been fine since I got it, but the last week or so when I run anything really processor intensive (usually games) it starts to behave strangely. My son was playing EA's Spore and the mouse started responding sluggishly, jumping around the screen instead of tracking smoothly. I tried it with some Steam games--CS:Source and Civ4:BTS--with similar problems. Despite the new graphics update, my fps in CS:Source was below 15, where it used to be locked in at 30. Civ4:BTS was very sluggish and the slow performance tends to follow me out of the game. I was typing in a forum and the keystrokes were going so slowly that some didn't register.
I tried creating a new user to test it out and the behavior continued.
When this is happening the machine seems to be heating unevenly--growing especially hot on the left (as I face it) side.
Any thoughts?I tried again today. No dice. Steam still hasn't gotten back to me. I noticed that my game played fine for about 20 seconds when I tested it today, but as soon as the fan came on, the sound cut out, and shortly after that, everything became unplayable.
I tried non-steam games today as well. Starcraft II on moderate settings wasn't as bad as Half Life 2, but it crawled, even in the menus. That seems to imply that this is a video card or video card software issue to me.
Once again, the left side felt like it was on fire, while the right seemed perfectly cool.
Are you sure you didn't update your mac with the latest graphics update? It was a mac update, not a steam update.
I've got a 500gb 7200rpm HDD. I don't know if it's a seagate, but whatever comes standard in the new MBPs is what I've got.
