MBP slower than ever...

I just upgraded to Snow Leopard, then swapped a 250gb 7200rpm hard drive for a 500gb 5400rpm hard drive. Now my computer is slower than ever. It still works, but at a much slower pace. Often the screen will freeze for up to 10 seconds before becoming operable again. This happens when doing the simplest of tasks. I am only running about 5 programs at a time anyways. This never happened on the old system. And I don't think its a matter of the slower hard drive. I was running an old MB with a smaller HD, same RPM, same RAM, and there was no problem. What gives? What should I do?

OK. Let's proceed on the premise it's not the drive. Although, I swapped an 80GB 5400 drive on an iMac G4 for a 160 GB@7200 and noticed quite a difference.
How did you install, clean install with Migration Assistant, clone, Time Machine?
There are some simple troubleshooting steps you can take.
Create a new User go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" (make it an admin acct) and test your apps in this new account, if they are faster the problem is isolated to your User and not systemwide.
If the issue is limited to your user account try starting up Safe Mode (It will take more time to startup in Safe Mode because it runs a directory check.)
If your apps functions faster that way, go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login Items, and remove them. Boot normally and test. If not go to ~(yourHome)/Library/Contextual Menu Items and move whatever is there to the desktop. Then do the same with /Library/Contextual Menu Items. Lastly, try moving ~(yourHome)/Library/Fonts to your desktop and restarting. Also, delete Users/yourname/Library/Caches. (on the first launch after this some apps will be slow until cache catches up.)
Log out/in or restart, if that sorts it start putting items back one at a time until you find the culprit.
If the issue is systemwide then, you may be able to repair this with the The 10.6.2 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.

  • Snow leopard slower than ever

    Hello there,
Since I've installed Snow Leopard ( one year ago...) my mac is slower than ever at the launch ( more than 40 seconds).
I did my best to clean it with Snow Leopard Cache Cleaner, OnyX. ( It fixed my problem of the multicolored circle which was boring me on iPhoto or When i was on Internet...).
I've checked and fixed the disc, it looks ok.
I've delted the soft which started at the launch
I'd like to upgrade my mac to Lion... but first I need to find  what makes it slow.
    What's wrong please?
    Looking forward hearing from helpers

Check this out... Closing down is very fast... here are the errors for the launch
    How can i do? Thanks

  • My macbook is running slower than ever. I have done all the updates and installed MS Office 11. Any thoughts?

    Hi, all,
My macbook is running slower than ever. I have done all the updates, emptied my downloads, and installed MS Office 11. I am not sure if I can do anything else?!

    arupp,
I suggest trying to replace the RAM and the memory storage. This is hard and could potentially ruin your MacBook if you do this the wrong way. Another easier way is to erase thing that you don't need.

    Hi there skmonirul,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
From what I gather, iMessages are taking longer than expected to send on your iPhone 4s. If you aren’t seeing issues with other apps, try restarting your iPhone as shown here:
Restart or reset your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
If the issue persists, try restoring your iPhone as shown in the article below.
Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings - Apple Support
    So long,

  • Notice iPad1 Slower than ever with iOS 5?

Boy, am I ever glad I updated my iPad to IOS 5. Not only did Apple lose my back during the update (causing me to resore the whole "system"), but now it runs even slower than the last iOS 4 update.
    Hasn't anyone else noticed this?
When I updated to iOS 5, I said to myself, "If iOS 5 runs even slower or causes any other problems, I'm going to throw this thing out the window. Well, not going to do this, but I'm REALLY going to recommend AGAINST the iPAD to anyone interested
    Can't touch this

    LaraCroft_NYC wrote:
Nothing is wrong. System was restored from scratch for the update. It's an iPad 1 and Apple designs new operating systems for newer, faster hardware. Older hardware ALWAYS runs slower with newer operating systems, including, and especially MACS. This is 44 years of system internals design experience with MS in Comp Sci+BS Comp Engineering talking, 25 years of Mac experience since 1986, and iOS experience since it first came out.
What is your "experience"? Oh, yes...You mentioned it: Like "most" iOS users.
Strangely, i have worked in Software Engineering and Operating Systems development since 1964. That gives me, oh, 48 years or so of relevant experience. I also have an MS in Computer Science.
When I tell you that i am using my iPad 1 with iOS 5 and am NOT experiencing a slowdown do you not believe me? Is it necessary to become insulting and condescending? Is it necessary to close your mind to other data input?
I do believe you when you say that you are having problems. Since these problems are not present for every iPad 1 user there has to be something unique about your iPad 1 or the environment/settings that it is functioning in.
To find out what is the problem I suggest, as I said before, that you contact Apple, demonstrate your problem and get assistance.
To reach the conclusion, on the basis of one example, that Apple has crippled the iPad 1 with iOS 5 is illogical.

  • Stabilization Slower Than Ever. :( New 12 Core Mac Pro VS 2006 PowerPC Dual

I have concluded testing that the WarpStabilizer in AE using a 12 Core 2.9 GHZ Mac Pro is SLOWER than a dual 2.7 GHZ PowerPc G5 running iMovie and GeeThree's Stabilizer plugin.
There is no excuse for such shotty performance.

    Rick:
Stabilization needs to occur in edited clips. If you don't the stabization data is excessive for centering the frame. The edit comes from within PP. Once a PP project is ready for the Dynamic Link(s) .. a 30 min clip could have 100s of clips that need to be sent to AE via DL.
To do this with one giant 30 min. clip sends the position tracking data all over the place .. and ruins many frames that would otherwise be fine if the clips where divided appropriatley ..
Try it .. or anyone whom wrote the plug in should try it.
It is a very simple process that I expected to do within a very basic function.
The was PP and AE handles it is ______.
I would love to make a demo video about what is happening. :O

  • My hard drive is slower than ever - Late 2009 iMac - help requested

I was testing my hard disk via BlackMagic Disk Speed Test across the network (for copying files from my MacBook Pro to my Late 2009 iMac, and I was shocked at the write speeds.
Because of this, I went to the machine and ran local tests, both BlackMagic and xbench. Suddenly I was horrified when I saw the performance for write operations well below the speeds I'd observed in the past. Luckily, I had saved xbench files so I had the ability to compare old disk tests. In the summer of 2013 running 10.7.3, this same hard drive had an uncached write speed of 116 MB/s [4K blocks] and 94 MB/s [256K block]. Now, the drive running under 10.9.5 is performing very inconsistently, with top speeds around 80 MB/s and averages more like 50 MB/s.
I cannot think of any significant changes to tools or background applications installed since that time, so I ran EtreCheck -- the results of which I'm pasting below.
Any guidance as to what I should test would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading! --
    Chris
    Problem description:
Hard disk slowed to less than half the speed from Mac OS X 10.7.3, as I am now on 10.9.5 and the speed appears to be roughly 40M/s uncached write down from 119M/s previously. I am using the same drive, memory and most of the same applications.
The only large difference is the OS.

    Hi Eric -
I did a horrible job of explaining *when* the slow performance became noticeable. These changes did not happen when I installed Mavericks, I just don't have benchmarks *saved* to give the support community exact numbers after Mavericks was installed. The performance at that time was roughly the same, although you might recall that the old app xbench no longer worked to give a comparison because one or more of the sections of testing wouldn't work (memory, if I recall correctly, although I will run it when I am back at that machine and post here).
In any case, the only significant change since the slow down is the OS, but the decline in performance was noticed in the fall. It wasn't until I tried this network copying task the other day that I decided to run BlackMagic's test. This is when I realized I should go check the performance on the local machine. Having already run through many of the generic recommendations, I thought perhaps someone here who has a much deeper understanding of the storage abstraction layer would have guidance on specific preference files that might be corrupted since I can't find any tool to check them. I've noticed that many of the people seeking guidance are not very technical and the advice is similarly geared. I'm sure I could spend a little time this week finding comparable tools in Mac OS X to those I'd have used in the past on Windows (Sysinternals) to do real time debugging and process analysis.
So far I have found that there were a few processes running high, like the dashboard client, so I moved (deleted) the preference file and rebooted. This resulted in the gain to that 60 MB/sec write performance (up from the low of 40 MB/sec), but there must be other areas yet unexplored.
At this point I'm considering a fresh install, but I'd been told in previous exchanges when I first started developing on Macs (2008) that fresh installs were rarely the best solution on Macs.
Can you give me guidance on that? You probably know that in the Windows world it is often (depending on how you define often) necessary to format and reinstall the OS. As a long time systems architect developing everything from device drivers to enterprise solutions, I see that as a result of the attempts to maintain legacy support for so long and the convoluted resulting APIs and failure to make real fixes for fear of causing problems with older hardware and software. Would you suggest erasing and reinstalling?
@BobHarris - I know that's a problem and it's why I monitor the drive more than I do drives in other systems. My drive didn't qualify for replacement, but I think Apple doesn't always do a good job with the recalls. I was very fortunate that my old white MacBook qualified for quite a few replacement parts so it's a great browsing-the-web computer now, but at its age, it isn't capable of running most of the apps I need. I have considered selling the 27" iMac but when I last had it in for warranty repair, the DisplayPort was misaligned to the case, so I'm going to have to pay labor just to get it popped open to fix that (since the service center says they didn't cause the DP problem - although they must have!)... In any case, if I have to spend that money, I might as well use the drive doubler kit since I never use the optical drive in that box anyway. Mostly I love having it because of the gorgeous big screen. That being said, costs of repairs are silly when I can just buy another used MBP circa 2012 and get twice the processing power then use a CalDigit dock like the one I use with my existing MBP to use an inexpensive HD TV for the monitor.
Thanks for the replies folks - the input is awesome!
    Chris

  • MBP slower than iMac on wifi

My MacBook Pro (2 yrs old), is MUCH slower on our wifi network, than my imac (5 yrs old)>
    How can this possibly be?
    thanks

I measured the speeds by using them at the same time. The MBP was not loading pages, or the ones it was loading were taking FOREVER. While the imac was breezing through pages. Apple.com for example.
This is not a new issue, i've noticed it in the past.
Also, updating apps. The MBP was taking an absurdly long time, while the imac breezed through it.

  • 8 Core Harpertown with Nirvana of RAM - Logic 8 is Slower than Ever....

    Hi There,
So I have completed installing Logic 8.0.1, and I ran all the updates. Repaired permissions etc. Have about 4 Audio Units installed and use Logic for doing midi only. All audio drivers open are Core Audio.
Now I used to run the same setup on a G5 2.3 GHZ and it was OK. Now I am on the fasted CPU that apple makes and Logic has never been running slower. resizing a window is amazingly slow and NON real-time. And I am on a huge NVIDIA graphic card with 512 MB RAM. When I double click a midi region the piano roll slowly works it way up and I am filled with awe that the State-of-the-Art has become so slow. Logic 7 on a PPC was blazingly fast when drawing a comparison. Is Logic getting slower with each upgrade. I had a region that was 16 bar long. I open it in the piano roll and was zoomed in so I could see 1 bar ahead. I wanted to copy a note from the beginning to the end of the 16 bar region - so I option dragged it to the right. The speed at which Logic moved the contents of the window to the right was comparable to a slow fast forward. This I used to do in a blaze on L7.
Screen sets are taking so much longer to load than L8 Leopard and L7 Leopard. Seriously - when PT 741 is maxed out with TDM's and RTAS playing heavy edits with 64 tracks the screen response is pretty darn slow - but it is still more than twice as fast as Logic playing with NO audio instruments merely addressing 8 external midi machines.
Can someone shed some light on this...
To make sure that my setup wasn'T screwed - I re-installed OS X on a separate partition and re-installed Logic as well... Thus I had two identical setup. Both were similar slow. So I went to my dealership and tested the screen response of their Harpertown - 3.0GHZ 8 GB RAM - and guess what the screen response was exactly as slow.
Now, I WOULD consider myself a fast editor - but I aint so fast that I could make PT even hick up. Are the users of L8 adapting to the slowness and have they forgotten how lightning fast Logic used be???
I may be able to instantiate more plugs with this setup but L8 definitely ran a whole lot faster on the G5. So much for Logic 8 being optimized for Leopard and Intel.

    So here's an update...
I tried once again reinstalling only booting without ANY audio drivers loaded. Still the same thing.
So I thought to myself: Hey, lets call the colleges in the other studios where I know they use Logic. I called 5 studios distributed over Germany (This is where Logic has it's broadest clientele. 3 of them said - "Since Logic 8 came out we had to switch to Protools. Another said" I had to switch to Digital Performer as Logic was just too slow and gave me NO performance compared to prior versions. The last one was still on Logic and as I asked him about the screen slowness he started breathing heavily. And said "This is killing me, Logic used to be so fast and now with every new version it gets slower and worse. I am tired of waiting and have already gotten quotes on a PT HD|2 system."
So it seems that I am NOT the only one thinking this is annoying. I called 5 studios who smiled at me 3 years ago when I left Logic as main DAW for PT... Today, they have or are about to switch to different DAWs.
That sums it up pretty much for - I am heading back to L7 - until I have converted my about 250 songs that I still need to produce. Then Logic will probably be removed from my CPU - unless of course they pull up some magic stunts from DAW bag of trix
Thanks to you who took the time to reply
