MBP SR Total Freeze

I have had my MBP SR for exactly one month now - no problems until yesterday.
I was watching a DVD using DVD Player, and suddenly the MBP slowly started to freeze up until it was completely gone.
First, the picture froze - I thought maybe the DVD is bad and hit eject. Nothing happened. I tried to switch to other apps with CMD-Tab - not working.
Now I got worried and tried to CMD-OPT-ESC force quit the DVD player. Nothing happened. A spinning beach ball appeared and I could move it around with the trackpad.
I tried to force-esc again, then waited - maybe it would recover. Ultimately after a one or two minutes, the spinning beach ball also froze in place.
I did a hard restart and it rebooted just fine. I could not find anything in the consoles but I don't really know which one to look at for an issue like this.
While playing the DVD I had lots of different apps open in the background and was connected on Airport so it's possible something besides the DVD player caused this.
I was subsequently able to watch the DVD using VLC player - seems to be a lot better in dealing with badly encoded DVDs than DVD Player and I didn't want to risk another hard freeze.
It's disappointing because I am almost 100% sure this was a software crash of OS X - this machine has been running fine for a month so I don't think it's memory or similar. It might have overheated but the fans very dead silent so I don't think that's what happened.
Can anyone make an educated guess as to what could lead to a rather slow freeze up like this? I find it interesting that the trackpad initially worked, and only died a few minutes into this. Also where would I look for any error logs? I didn't get the kernel panic message on screen. It just froze up.

  • MBP totally freezes - need to reboot

Ever since upgrading to OS 10.6 my (2008) MBP keeps totally freezing (often during the night) and I need to reboot. There have been a few other posts on this topic (http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10308344#10308344) but it doesn't look like anyone has posted any solutions.
    Can you help?
    Some details on my setup:
    1. I have iWork, Skype, Keyboard Maestro installed.
    2. I used to have Chax and iStat but have uninstalled these thinking they may be causing a problem, but its still freezing.
    3. I am backing up to Time Capsule.
    4. My Time Capsule did have an external drive attached; I have unplugged this to see if it makes a difference.
I've checked Console, but it doesn't seem to offer any insight (this is last night's just before it crashed):

  • Constant Total Freezes

Until 3 Months ago I was on a dual G5 MacPro and it occasionally totally froze on me as well. I had it for 2 years and I never reinstalled the OS
I then got the latest and greatest MacPro and did a transfer so I could start using it asap... and after having not even a few days I would sometimes get certain applications totally freezing. Once a week, out of the blue, the ENTIRE OS will just freeze. Mouse, windows, etc, everything. It starts with one app freezing, then another, and another. Typically I realize it's happening because my music will suddenly stop and I realize "it's happening". Within about 20 seconds, one by one, all other apps freeze. The only way to get out of it is to hard restart.
I have iStat Menus running so I see RAM and Processor usage, and they don't spike or anything. I used to use MenuMeters, and it was the same story.
I did an Archive and Install 2 weeks ago and brought it to a full update through the updater. And now, since then twice it's done a total freeze. The latest was a few hours ago. I was typing an email in Safari. No particular apps were running.
When I go into the Console, there is no trace of a problem or whatnot...
So.. before doing a full ERASE and Install, I wanted to ask if there is anything I should try or diagnose.
    So.. ***?

Using Migration Assistant to migrate from a G5 to an Intel based Mac is generally not recommended. There will likely be files transferred that will work on a PowerPC Mac that will cause problems on an Intel Mac. I tried it once just to see if it would work, and it didn't. There are Apps and various other files scattered about that will make your intel Mac behave poorly if trasnferred from a G5 or other PowerPC Mac.
Your best bet is to backup your important files (documents, iPhoto Library, iTunes Library, maybe movies as well), do an erase and install, then put your important stuff back where it belongs.

  • Flash player locking up PC (total freeze)

My PC started locking up (total freeze) since I updated my Flash player to the latest version, no mouse, no keyboard, requires hard reboot everytime. I uninstalled it and now everything is ok now, please fix it, becouse I really need it for navigation.
    I'm using Windows 7 Professional 64bits, on a ASUS K45A, Core i5, 8GB RAM, Intel graphic 4000 video board.
    Browser: FireFox.

I just downloaded  GFX_Win8_Win7_64_9.18.10.3131_PV now to see if something changes, Just installed the Flashplayer plugin again and tested to make sure if my system would freeze again, and after 10 minutes it happened again.
Just uninstalled it after another hard reboot, and everything is good again.
What could be happening? I noticed that nothing happens if I use google Chrome, I don't know about I.E, haven't tryed it, and I'll never do (I'm not that desperate).

  • My 2011 early MBP pro 15 freezes at startup with distorted image

My 2011 early MBP pro 15 freezes at startup with distorted image, and sometimes its blank screen, I have also noticed that the machine heats up quickly at the same time.
I got this problem few weeks ago when it is running windows 7 in vitual machine. Firstly I used a software to disable the discrete graphic card and it backed to work for 2 weeks until the OS got an update (might be a firmware update since it required restart). Now it stops working completely.
I have try two hard drive (I have put in a SSD few months ago) and run the command line disk check on both of them, nothing wrong.
I tried to run disk utility/time machine at start-up, distorted screen or just blank
I tried to reinstall rams, did not work.
    Any other possible solutions?

  • My MBP (2007 intel) freezes or spontaneously shuts down and crackling comes from the speakers.

My MBP (2007 intel) freezes or spontaneously shuts down and crackling comes from the speakers. Sometimes this happens together all at once? It happens with and without peripherals. Has this happened to anyone else?
It does not seem to be linked to a specific program or periferal use.
I would appreciate if someone can shed some light on this.

Run the Apple Hardware Test and swee if any issues are discovered.  Also a SMC and PRAM resets may help.
    Ciao.

  • MBP (mid-2009) freezing, slow installations and file transfer

I bought the latest MacBook Pro model and installed Snow Leopard on a cleanly formatted hard drive. I have tried migrating via ethernet and FireWire from my iMac, but the migrations failed either due to freezing (via FireWire after roughly 24 hours of file transfer) or by an error message (ethernet with Migration Assistant).
Only through a Time Machine backup was I able to transfer my account files to the MBP, which again totaled at over 20 hours of transferring. The system was a mess, clogged constantly by freezing and spinning beach balls of death for durations lasting around 10-20 seconds during which music would clip after 5-10 seconds of everything not responding, this being accentuated especially during installations. I decided to format and try anew.
Now I've formatted the hard drive, installed Snow Leopard and will transfer my files manually onto a clean account. Installations take a long time although SL installation is within 30 minutes, iLife took 1.5 hours to install 5 GB. During the installation Safari stopped responding, as did the entire system, and the spinning beach ball would keep spinning. Watching a 480p trailer in Quicktime made the entire computer freeze up (no video/audio) for 10 seconds halfway. Transferring 136 GB (my Music folder) will take around 15 hours according to the estimate after 10 minutes of transferring.
I've sold my iMac now and all I have are the files on my external hard drive. I want to get them onto my MBP ASAP but the slowness is preventing me from doing what needs to be done and it's very frustrating. When I try to boot into Hardware Testing by holding D down the computer doesn't do it no matter what (Application DVD in or not, plugged into power or not). I've tried resetting PRAM but I get the same inaction.
    Any ideas?
Edit: I've done Disk Utility to no avail, it finds nothing wrong.

Installed, still getting freezes with spinning beach balls. Transfer says it would take 1 hour opposed to that 15 hours, but it stops transferring after X amount of gigabytes (from 0.5 to 5), not do anything for a while and then continue, stretching the estimate to over 2 hours after some time. I don't know if this is just with the hard drive.
The freeze-ups are frustrating as **** and make for a very poor experience. Any ideas to get to the bottom of this? I still haven't been able to boot into the Hardware Test no matter how much I try.

  • Using Echo Audiofire on aluminum MacBook Pro causes total freeze

    Hey everyone,
So I have an Echo Audiofire 8 digital audio interface. Picked up the new alumimum MBP because I wanted more power to facilitate more plugins and tracks than my first-gen MacBook could provide during audio production.
I just got a firewire 800 to 400 cable from monoprice in the mail, so I was totally happy to fire up the new computer with my audio software. However, I can't get either OS (using XP on Bootcamp, too) to work with the Audiofire. In OS X, I switch to the Audiofire in the sound menu but no sound occurs in any program. Although, the system continues to work and when I switch back to the built-in sound everything plays fine.
In Windows, playing any file in iTunes, VLC, or Windows Media Player makes the system completely unresponsive (mouse freezes, everything freezes) and requires a hard reset. I of course shut down the Audiofire too, then turn it back on and then turn on the MBP. Selecting the Audiofire as a sound source in either the XP control panel or the Nuendo audio settings causes a total system freeze too.
I've got all the latest drivers and updates across the board so I'm totally scratching my head here. Is it a device setting I'm overlooking somewhere? Or could it be a bad cable? Has anyone else seen this happen too?
    Thanks

An update and an apology. I must have been so frustrated last night that I didn't properly power down and back up the equipment in the right order when I tested it for OS X. The Audiofire DOES work with the new MBP in OS X. I booted up three times this morning and everything's fine, it records to Garageband and plays back wonderfully as always. So now I strongly suspect it's something to do with the Windows updates I've applied.
I get to have the fun of reinstalling Windows again. Good times.

  • MBP mid-2009 Freezing after Hard Drive upgrade -HELP!

So, my Apple Care just ended and I was almost always at a full 320GB, so I decided to upgrade my hard drive to 1TB.  I purchased a Western Digital TB drive (9.5mm) at a store recommended by an Apple Genius and followed the instruction on youtube exactly, as well as having another visit to the Genius bar, ensuring I grounded myself often throughout the process. My computer is a 15" MBP originally loaded with Snow Leopard, now running OSX Lion.  I did a Time Machine backup prior to everything and also bought an enclosure for my old hard disk to use and it has yet to be wiped, but Disk Utility says that it's corrupt because 1 program's debug log says the number of files changed (after the time machine processing.) I did a Carbon Copy Clone prior to installing the hard drive as well, so when all was done, I was able to start the computer without issue.  (This program is what told me first that I had an issue with that debug log.  I'd tried to delete a huge folder that was taking up nearly 30GB before the clone, it was backed up on time machine and another backup drive.)
However, after Vuze re-opened (which I'd just recently upgraded to Pro) it froze the computer, so I got the rainbow disk and even Force Quit did not work.  Since then, I've had to reboot with the top right button dozens of times.  Mail, Chrome and Vuze have all caused freezing and Command Option Escape does not work at all.  My beloved computer is starting to feel like a big brick.  I uninstalled and re-installed Vuze Plus since, but still have the same issues (trashing the program then re-downloading).  As for Disk Utility, it says the drive is just fine.  There are no software updates needed and that's about as far as I can get before things crash again.
I would really appreciate any assistance that can be provided based on this scenario.  I hope I've provided enough detail, please let me know if more is needed.
    Thank you in advance.

The only thing that I can think of is that your SATA cable may be bad... it's the first thing that I would try replacing. DIsk Utility wouldn't be able to detect a bad SATA cable - you'd just have random freezes and crashes.
I don't know that this is the solution to your problem, but it's the first thing I would attempt. 2009 models are notorious for having bad SATA cables - try PowerbookMedic and order a new one. If it doesn't fix the problem, call back.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • New MBP 15" Weird Freezing & Disk (Volume Header) Problems, related?

    Hi all
I hope someone can help me, and I hope I don't have a faulty Mac!
I bought a 15" MBP a week ago and while it's awesome, I have a problem where the system will completely freeze, except for the mouse cursor.
Nothing on the keyboard works, force quit doesn't come up, plugging in / removing the power supply doesn't change the battery icon, there's no spinning beach ball. Literally the whole system is unresponsive except for the mouse cursor which seems to be moving fine. None of the hardware controls work either, i.e. eject button
The only consistency that I can think of is that of all the times that it has happened, Firefox was open (ver. 2.0.0.2), except once where Firefox had just started (it froze with Firefox darkened in the dock)
Since then I've reinstalled Firefox but I have another problem and wonder if they're related.
Fresh out of the box I tried to install Windows through Boot Camp but when Boot Camp tried to partition my disk it gave me an error and referred me to Disk Utilities. Disk Utilities gave me a "Volume Header needs minor repair" error, so I fixed it from an older Mac that I have with the MBP mounted in disk mode.
This fixed it, Boot Camp then installed fine, I managed to get myself a virus so I deleted the Windows partition through Boot Camp and tried to partition the disk again with the intent of installing Windows and not get a virus this time

  • Total freeze with large files

    Hi everybody,
I have a problem that is getting me quite crazy. I have a fairly big (~88mb, JPEG), panorama to edit.
Fact is that Aperture is able to use all sort of adjustments, including brushes, for a limited amount of time (say, 4 minutes), then... just freezes up. It's not completely gone, it just works a lot. I don't know what it does but it consumes almost all CPU it finds. If I am really patient, I can open the menu and quit the app. Then when I fire it up again, it works like charm. Then again, after some minutes it's the same again.
The problem is mainly with brushes, as I'm working with them now. Some strokes and then... boom. It's not a problem of limited processing power. Computer's fine.
I don't know; if I have to say, it's like the processing of the miniature jpgs or something like that sends CPU usage into hyperspace. I haven't found yet a way to disable potential troublemaker features.
Did I mention that if I forcequit the app I lose all the work on the last brush I've used, rendering useless entire hours of time spent being really patient?
I've read that other users have had the same problem, nobody got an answer.
Thank everyone for the help, this has been going on for the last week and it's REALLY annoying.

You're not getting the point. The problem is not the usage, it's the fact that the application becomes totally unstable with no apparent reason (it works perfectly for a limited amount of time, no matter how fast I go) and gets almost stuck unless patiently closed. There's no time I can wait for it to finish working, I spent even half an hour watching my mac being completely unusable to see if at some point it gets back to normal.
This is not an acceptable behaviour, in no possible way. There's got to be some problem, and that problem is not my current hardware configuration (otherwise, I would not have responsiveness from second one).
Does anybody have a minimal clue of what could be?
    Thanks
    M

  • MBP 15" Weird Freezing Problems.

    Hello,
This is a rather odd and detailed problem. So I will outline as much as I possibly can. Hopefully someone has seen this before.
I currently have a 15" Macbook Pro. 2.16 GHz CPU, stock 1GB RAM and stock 120 GB hard drive. I have been running Tiger fine for at least one year on this machine. However I discovered a problem and it is very bothersome.
I recently purchased the Leopard upgrade disks. When I boot up on the Leopard installation disk, my machine freezes. It will boot to the point where it shows the "Welcome to OSX" screen, and you pick your language. Then after five seconds the machine will freeze hard. The only way to restart the machine is to hold the power button for 10 seconds.
Out of curiosity I pulled out my Tiger install disks. They boot, but do not get this far even. The grey screen with the Apple logo appears, and the spinny thing freezes up. And the only way to reboot is to power cycle (10 second hold).
It is important to note that the machine freezes in this identical spot each and every time.
I figured it might be related to my internal DVD drive. Hooked up two separate DVD drives, one firewire and one USB. Exact same results.
I ran the Apple hardware tests repeatedly. They always report that hardware is good.
I borrowed install media from a friend, both Tiger and Leopard installers fail in the same place as my media does.
Also borrowed my friends MBP, identical hardware configuration. Put my machine in Target firewire mode. And installed Leopard from his machine onto my HD. When I reboot my machine, after 5 seconds it will freeze on the Leopard login screen.
I thought it might be RAM. So I swapped my friends RAM into my machine. Freezes in the same place each and every time.
So I'm at a loss. Has anyone ever seen such routine freezes when trying to install Leopard?
I have zapped PRAM/NVRAM. And tried everything else I could think of. Any other ideas would be appreciated!!
    Cheers,
    S.

I'm having the same issue--it looks like a tearing or smearing of lines of text, mainly in Safari, though I have seen it in Mail. I haven't noticed it related to running on AC or battery, but it may be...I had an older MacBook Pro (core duo) running 10.5.2 that was fine and recently upgraded to a 2.4 Core 2 Duo and this problem has popped up.
This issue looks suspiciously like a problem I was having on a Mac Pro with the ATI1900 card--it was brushed off for ages as a "heat problem" or the like with the card, and then miraculously after months of waiting a firmware update came out that completely cleared up the problem...
