MBP suddenly slow/lagging - pls somebody skilled with EtreCheck tell me what's wrong?

I love ASC for hands-on advice to try oneself however this time I am in it too deep: My sons MBP suddenly became lagging and unresponsive/very very slow... ie. the swirl-thing comes up 1-2 secs AFTER clicking the apple-icon and the menu yet another 6-10 secs. Below is a copy from EtreCheck, pls help me understand it - never used it before.. My other MBPs could be optimized as well but at least they perform ok... this one is bad. Who to blame? Me, my son or thirdparty?

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Apple wants to charge for a repair but won't tell me what's wrong with my iPad

    So my iPad mini is 1 year and 5 days old, and it suddenly won't power on.  Nothing, even with a different charger and cable.  The Apple website said to send in for battery/power issues, so I filled in the form and gave them my credit card for a little over $100.00 and sent it to them via UPS.  That was 2 days ago, now I get an email saying they need to charge me $225.95+tax and I have 48 hours to either pay it or have them send the unit back.  Nothing on their repair status tells me what is wrong and why the sudden increase in price for an iPad mini repair.  I can call or chat online for another $19.00, but that seems like hiway robbery to me.  I mean, I already paid you $100+, can't you even tell me what you found that needs another $225?!?!?  On the repair status, there is an area called views of your product with a broken image file, so I can't even see what they are referring to.
    If I way the $19, will they even be able to tell me anything, or will they just read what I can see on the webpage?  I'm starting to think it will be cheaper to just buy another iPad mini at this rate.
    Has anyone any advice ?

    Well, I called Apple and talked to them last night.  They were surprisingly very friendly.  They emailed me a picture of the iPad with what they were concerned about.  Now there is a dent in a corner, that I know wasn't there before.  I take create care of the iPad and use a full bumper case.  I explained to the repair tech that this dent is new and was not there when I took the iPad in for UPS.  Actually, when I took the iPad to UPS, I had the unit in the original box (I'm OCD that way).  The guy at UPS told me to take the iPad out of the box and then he weighed the iPad, some bubble wrap and an empty box.  He then said it was good to go and I walked away with the original packaging.  I honestly suspect the damage happened at UPS.  Plus a small dent in a corner shouldn't affect battery, right?  Anyway, after talking with a few people at repair, they noticed that their records show the iPad being 1 day out of AppleCare.
    The last guy was going to just charge me for the battery replacement, which I am good with.  But, guess what, Apple can't partial charge, it's either all or nothing.  So, after about an hour of being on the phone, they will repair or replace the iPad at no charge to me (just this once, only).
    I have to admit, that calling and talking with these guys was very helpful.  Everyone was friendly and cheering.  Plus I wasn't calling India (no offence to India).  I am definitely going to continue purchasing Apple products if this how their support works.  If only Cisco could learn to work that way...

    My iPhone 5 screen is black and will not come back on. The phone still works when paired with my vehicles Bluetooth what's wrong with it, and can I fix it?

    I have a similar problem.  I restored my iPhone 5 to the latest available OS.  After completing the process the phone never restarted.  The phone was fully charged when I restored it but now refuses to charge past the red battery icon.  I have been able to get the phone in UFD mode several times and have been able to load the new OS on the phone.  The Apple logo does come on and the software fully loads.  iTunes tells me the phone will restart but never does.  I left it to charge all night but it never appeared to load the battery.  This morning I went to the Grand Central Terminal apple store for help.  A woman at the store plugged the phone in but it never charged.  She absolutely refused to believe that I got my phone in UFD mode and loaded any software on.  I don't think it is a battery issue.  The only solution I was given was to buy a new phone.  Repairing it was out of the question.  At this point the phone is completely useless.  Thanks in advance for the help.

  • In my 16 gb iPhone 5, Mail has used up 5,6 gbs of memory.  Trash is empty and there are a few mails in my accounts with no attachments.  What's wrong?

    In my 16 gb iPhone 5, Mail has used up 5,6 gbs of memory (and is increasing).  Trash is empty and there are a few mails in my accounts with no attachments.  What's wrong?

    These are Apple's tips on this:
    Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
    Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
    Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIs and corrosion.
    Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
    After at least 15 minutes, if:
    The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see the battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen. Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
    The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
    Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
    If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
    If the display turns on, go to step 4.
    If the display remains black, go to next step.
    Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
    If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.

    I can't print using airprint from my iPhone 4.  Everything with the phone and the printer and router are up to date.  I can print from my iPad 2 with no problems.  What's wrong with the iPhone 4?

    I just wanted to leave a note that it's working now. I'm not sure if it was the latest iTunes update that got it working or that i decided to start a new library instead of using the one i had backed up on Windows 8 (it didn't occur to me to check using the old library when i re-installed iTunes). But if anyone is having this problem, it might be worth trying again with a new installation of iTunes to see if the latest update works for you, and if not, try using a fresh library instead of a backup (by fresh library i mean discard your old library completely and start a new library, not just restore as new iPhone, a whole new library).

    4.3.5 is the current version, so that is the version that iTunes will download, not 4.3.3

  • Weblogic SSO with AD - My Try - What's wrong?

    Dear All
    I'm trying to setup Weblogic to Authenticate using AD and have SSO with a Windows workstation(joined to the domain).
    I just setup an Active Directory(Win2K3), a Windows XP(SP2) and a Linux System(CentOS5) with Weblogic 10.3.
    I'm wondering what is wrong with my configuration. I can only logon on Adminstration Console using weblogics local users, and even with entering username(those which created on AD) and password AD Authentication does not work.
    Anyone has simliar experiance or any clue?
    Appreciated
    TIA
    Cheers
    Here is the setup:
    The domain is: example.com and machines are: dc.example.com (AD), winclient.example.com (Windows XP joined to the example.com domain) and weblogic.example.com (CentOS with Weblogic 10.3 installed)
    The hosts file on all three machines are filled with their FQDN, Machine Name and corresponding IP addresses. They all have ping working successfully between each two of them. Firewalls are checked to be off.
    These are the steps I came through based on documentation I could found on the net:
    h1. 0. Configuring Your Network Domain to Use Kerberos
    In Linux Machine(Weblogic Server) edit Kerberos configuration file for appropriate values:
    */etc/krb5.conf*
    \[logging\]
    default = FILE:/var/log/krb5libs.log
    kdc = FILE:/var/log/krb5kdc.log
    admin_server = FILE:/var/log/kadmind.log
    \[libdefaults\]
    default_realm = EXAMPLE.COM
    default_tkt_enctypes = des-cbc-crc
    default_tgs_enctypes = des_cbc_crc
    dns_lookup_realm = false
    dns_lookup_kdc = false
    ticket_lifetime =28800
    forwardable = yes
    \[realms\]
    EXAMPLE.COM = {
    kdc = 192.168.1.193:88
    admin_server = dc
    default_domain = EXAMPLE.COM
    \[domain_realm\]
    .example.com = EXAMPLE.COM
    example.com = EXAMPLE.COM
    \[kdc\]
    profile = /var/kerberos/krb5kdc/kdc.conf
    \[appdefaults\]
    autologin = true
    forward = true
    forwardable = true
    encrypt = true
    pkinit = {
    allow_pkinit = false
    h1. 1. Create two users on AD: "New->User" with "User must change password at next logon" option cleared (not tidked)
    weblogic (for weblogic service) (with password = "password1")
    weblogicusr (the user which should access Weblogic Administration Console) ("password2")
    * Note that group membership of these two users are left default.(Domain Users)
    h1. 2. For "weblogic" & "weblogicusr" user set these Account Optiones:
    - Use DES encryption types for this account (ticked)
    - Do not require Kerberos preauthentication (cleared)
    * then reset the password again for "weblogic" (with password = "password1") and "weblogicusr" (with "password2").
    h1. 3. Create Service Principal Names for Weblogic Server and User on Win2K3 machine:
    - >setspn -a host/weblogic.example.com weblogic
    - >setspn -a HTTP/weblogic.example.com weblogic
    here is the result
    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator.DC>setspn -L weblogic
    Registered ServicePrincipalNames for CN=weblogic,CN=Users,DC=example,DC=com:
    HTTP/weblogic
    host/weblogic
    HTTP/weblogic.example.com
    host/weblogic.example.com
    and
    - >setspn -a HTTP/weblogic.example.com weblogicusr
    and the result
    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator.DC>setspn -L weblogicusr
    Registered ServicePrincipalNames for CN=Weblogic User,CN=Users,DC=example,DC=com:
    HTTP/weblogicsrv.example.com
    HTTP/weblogicsrv
    h1. 4. Create the keytab file for Weblogic Server:
    On AD machine issue:
    (ktpass from MS Windows Support Tools)
    >ktpass -princ host/[email protected] -pass password1 -mapuser weblogic -out c:\temp\weblogic.host.keytab
    >ktpass -princ HTTP/[email protected] -pass password1 -mapuser weblogic -out c:\temp\weblogic.HTTP.keytab
    (ktab from JRE 6)
    >ktab -k c:\temp\weblogic.keytab -a [email protected]
    Password for [email protected]:*password1*
    Done!
    Service key for [email protected] is saved in c:\temp\weblogic.keytab
    ** Note I could not kinit successfully merely with weblogic.host.keytab and/or weblogic.HTTP.keytab, I got this error +"Key table entry not found while getting initial credentials"+ how ever the keytab I created using ktab("weblogic.keytab") works fine in this case, so I decided to merge whole three of them into a keytab.
    >\[root@weblogic keytabs\]# kinit -k -t weblogic.host.keytab [email protected]
    >kinit(v5): Key table entry not found while getting initial credentials
    h1. 5. Port and Merge keytabs
    Then I ported these three files to the Linux Machine(weblogic.example.com): weblogic.host.keytab, weblogic.HTTP.keytab and weblogic.keytab
    and merged into one keytab:
    ktutil: "rkt weblogic.host.keytab"
    ktutil: "rkt weblogic.HTTP.keytab"
    ktutil: "rkt weblogic.keytab"
    ktutil: "wkt weblogic-keytab"
    ktutil: "q"
    * then put the result keytab "weblogic-keytab" somewhere in Weblogic Path:
    >/root/bea/user_projects/domains/base_domain/kerberos
    h2. 5.1 Test the keytab and kerberos configuration
    >\[root@weblogic keytabs\]# kinit -k -t weblogic-keytab [email protected]
    >\[root@weblogic keytabs\]# klist
    >Ticket cache: FILE:/tmp/krb5cc_0
    >Default principal: [email protected]
    >
    >Valid starting Expires Service principal

    h1. 6. Creating a JAAS Login File
    Create krb5Login.conf and put it in here: "/root/bea/user_projects/domains/base_domain/kerberos/"
    krb5Login.conf
    com.sun.security.jgss.initiate {
    com.sun.security.auth.module.Krb5LoginModule required

    h1. 7. Modify startup options
    add these option to "/root/bea/user_projects/domains/base_domain/bin/startWebLogic.sh"

    I found something in Logfile:
    <Sep 4, 2009 6:17:39 PM IRDT> <Debug> <SecurityAtn> <BEA-000000> <LDAP Atn Login username: weblogicusr>
    <Sep 4, 2009 6:17:39 PM IRDT> <Debug> <SecurityAtn> <BEA-000000> <new LDAP connection to host 192.168.1.193 port 389 use local conne

    <Sep 4, 2009 6:17:39 PM IRDT> <Debug> <SecurityAtn> <BEA-000000> <[Security:090294]could not get connection>
    According to this post: Re: WL10.3 and SSO and Active Directory
    a correct ldap connection should look like this:
    <LDAP Atn Login username: Administrator>
    <userExists? user:Administrator>
    <new LDAP connection to host 10.10.0.254 port 389 use local connection is false>
    <created new LDAP connection LDAPConnection { ldapVersion:2 bindDN:""}>
    <connection succeeded>
    *<getConnection return conn:LDAPConnection {ldaps://10.10.0.254:389 ldapVersion:3 bindDN:"HTTP/[email protected]"}>
    <getDNForUser search("CN=Users,DC=DOMAIN,dc=local", "(&(&(cn=Administrator)(objectclass=user))(!(userAccountControl:1.2.840.113556.1.4.803:=2)))", base DN & below)>xist>*
    Moreover, I turned AD's debug logging and this is what happens when I try to login with a AD user: Why "Anonymous Logon"?!
    Event Type:     Information
    Event Source:     NTDS LDAP
    Event Category:     LDAP Interface

    Description:

    Error value:

    Any help would be greatly appreciated

    PLEASE HELP. It would be a Big Help

    That's unfortunate, because it would appear that the cable is pretty much toast. If it wasn't before, it pretty much is now that you've cracked it open.
    Either borrow one, or bite the bullet and buy one locally. You're not getting anywhere with that one.

  • I'm trying to add the system date with a Label. What is wrong with the code

    import java.util.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    public class CurrentDateApplet extends JApplet
         Calendar currentCalendar = Calendar.getInstance();
         JLabel dateLabel = new JLabel();
         JPanel mainPanel = new JPanel();
         int dayInteger = currentCalendar.get(Calendar.DATE);
         int monthInteger = currentCalendar.get(Calendar.MONTH)+1;
         int yearInteger = currentCalendar.get(Calendar.YEAR);
         public void init()
              mainPanel.add(dateLabel);
              setContentPane(mainPanel);
              dateLabel.append(currentCalendar.get(Calendar.HOUR) + currentCalendar.get
                        (Calendar.MINUTE);
    }

    As for what's wrong with the code, it would be easier if you said: it doesn't show the date (it does this instead), it doesn't compile (I get this message) etc.
    Anyway I'll assume you want to display the time in a label...
    dateLabel.append(currentCalendar.get(Calendar.HOUR) + currentCalendar.get
    (Calendar.MINUTE);This won't compile: the parentheses are mismatched, and there is simply no such thing as append(). So we could trydateLabel.setText("" + currentCalendar.get(Calendar.HOUR) + currentCalendar.get(Calendar.MINUTE));This wroks, but looks pretty nasty and it's not how you are supposed to format dates and times. Here's the unofficial party line, nicked from one of jverd's posts:
    Calculating Java dates: Take the time to learn how to create and use dates
    Formatting a Date Using a Custom Format
    Parsing a Date Using a Custom Format
    From those links you should be able to find those applicable to times like this: http://www.exampledepot.com/egs/java.text/FormatTime.html
    Using this approach you would end up with something like:import java.text.Format;
    import java.text.SimpleDateFormat;
    import java.util.Date;
    import javax.swing.JApplet;
    import javax.swing.JLabel;
    import javax.swing.JPanel;
    public class CurrentDateApplet extends JApplet
        private Date date;
        private JLabel timeLabel;
        private JPanel mainPanel;
        public void init()
            mainPanel = new JPanel();
            timeLabel = new JLabel();
            mainPanel.add(timeLabel);
            setContentPane(mainPanel);
            date = new Date();
            Format formatter = new SimpleDateFormat("HH:ss a");
            timeLabel.setText(formatter.format(date));
    }
