MBP Suddenly Turns Itself Off With No Warning/OS 10.5.8

Recently my Early 2008 2.4 GhZ MBP running OS 10.5.8 has been shutting itself off without warning. Previously it would provide a warning when the battery hit 20% and then it would go to sleep at some point.
The Finder Menu Bar battery indicator shows around 23% or one hour of power remaining. Coconut Battery shows:
Original Capacity: 5600 mAh
Remaining: 3473 mAh
Load-Cycles: 90
Age: 23 months
This is a problem because data has been lost when this occurs. Any ideas about what may be happening? I still have around a year left on an extended AppleCare warranty...

The new battery hasn't been used long enough for me to tell; I only installed it last night.
My wife is the primary user of the affected MBP and she often uses it until it goes to sleep due to low power, so I anticipate having an answer in a week or two...
Can the fact that my wife often ran down the old battery to such a low level have contributed to the development of this problem? What I find curious is that previously the MBP would simply go to sleep when the battery power got too low. And that quite a few MBP users are suddenly complaining about their Macs turning-off by themselves even when using new batteries...

  • P20-552 suddenly turns itself off..

I have a P20-552 (PSP26E-025E9-S4) which is about 18 months old and has recently begun to misbehave.
In particular, after a few minutes of some processor intense tasks (video file rendering) it suddenly turns itself off. No warnings, beeps, messages - just stops. Very worrying - anybody any idea why? Fortunately the guarantee doesn't run out until 2007.
One other issue, every few weeks or so I discover that when starting up, the keyboard simply does not work. Mouse is fine as is everything else, as far as I can see. So far a simple reboot has resolved that problem but would this indicate that there is something wrong deep down or is this something we are meant to live with?
Many thanks in advance for any suggestions and help.
    Brian.

    Hi
Well, it could be a overheating issue if the unit stops without any messages. The temperature goes high if the CPU works with a high performance.
In this case the first what I can suggest is to check the cooling vents. Try to clean I with vacuum cleaner.
Its not easy to say why the keyboard issue occurs. Its strange because after OS rebooting the keyboard works properly. Well, maybe a fresh OS solve the issue. But this is a only a suggestion.

  • OSX 10.5.2 my MBP keeps turning itself off

My MacBook Pro has developed a habit during the last couple of days of turning itself off for no reason. It also sometimes says that the battery is 0% charged when it is fully charged. I'm not sure if the two are related. I haven't found anything about this topic for OSX 10.5.2, only for 10.4.
Please help. (And explain to me like I don't already know what you're talking about, no abbreviations or references to things in the utility folder that I've probably never used before without explaining what they are, thank you.)

Are you running off the battery or power adapter when this shutdown happens?
It sounds as though you may have a bad battery and possibly time for a replacement.
Recently went through this myself so i'll just point you to a previous thread on the subject:

  • G4 suddenly turns itself off

This has been happening for a couple of weeks now. I've replaced the battery, swapped out power cords, zapped the PRAM, but my G4 continues to abruptly shut itself down. I haven't been able to find anything consistent about what triggers this. Sometimes the computer is only on for a few minutes, then POOF! Other times it can be on for several hours before it decides it's had enough. It happens when working in different programs, different keystrokes, different users...Any suggestions?
Thanks for any and all help,

Hello! Once you've ruled out the simple stuff you start considering the more difficult to isolate such as the motherboard or PSU. Have you opened it up and reseated the ram and the video card? Do you have the hardware test disc that came with the computer? It might be able to isolate the problem. While opened up and running you might also gently wiggle the wires near the connectors. I had a machine once that kept shutting down and wouldn't restart then when I opened it up it booted fine but then when I closed it back up it wouldn't start. Open it back up and start fine. Turned out as a loose wire in one of the large multiple wire connectors. These things are are to find but the random shutdown points to a PSU problem or MB problem. Tom

  • My iPhone 5 has suddenly turned itself off and won't turn back on again. My lock button is also broke so holding the lock and home but together doesn't work. Any ideas? i'm desperate

i can't get it to work, the screen is totally black and i've tried everything including charging, nothing is working

Take the device to Apple for evaluation and likely replacement as there is obviously a hardware issue.
I'm always amazed that people will leave with malfunctioning devices.

  • HP ZR2740W unexpectedly turns itself off

I have an HP ZR2740W which I bought in December 2011. It has been working flawlessly with my HP desktop HP Pavilion h8-1080t (with AMD Radion HD 6850) until today. Today after 30-60 minutes of use (time varies) the monitor suddenly turns itself off. Goes from blue light to no light. If I turn it back on it gives a brief screen shot and then goes off again. If I let it sit for a while I can turn it back on again for another episode.
While it is working the picture quality is excellent. My room temperature is about 78F.
Any idea if it is still in warranty? Or how much it would cost to fix it? Is this sort of problem even repairable?

    Hello Rgparker77,
I understand you’re stating the monitors turns itself off completely, is that correct? I will be happy to help you.
Most of HP’s equipment comes with at least a 1 year standard warranty some with a  2 year warranty. I am not sure if you ever did but there was an opportunity to get an extended warranty if you don't recall doing that.
Because the online warranty checker doesn’t recognize the serial number, your best bet would be to contact the HP help desk. If you reside in the US or Canada the number is 1-800-474-6836, if you reside in another country click on this link and select your country and the number will be provided.
If you are still covered under warranty most of the time HP just fully replaces the monitor, but again that is sometimes a case by case bases.
I hope this information is helpful.
Please respond back at your earliest convenience.

  • Warning before PlayBook turns itself off

It would be nice if the PlayBook would display a warning before it turns itself off due to the low batter charge. It's very annoying whn working on something it suddenly the PlayBook displays the "Powering off"-dialog and you didn't have a chance to save.
Looking at your battery status isn't a solution, because apps are full-screen and when working I don't want to be bothered with manually check that status...

  • Update: Video - Canon 6D turns itself off after a few shots with fully charged battery

Update: I uploaded my video to youtube, please comment:
    http://youtu.be/3PNLUYd8g7A
TIA and pardon me for my English.
I posted this originally at another forum, and somebody suggested me to post it here as well, to get more help.
Long story short, I purchased a brand new Canon 6D from B&H on Oct 24th, 2013. From early december, the camera starts to shut itself off randomly and displaying empty battery. I found the camera constantly shuts itself off after 20 - 100 continuous shots with a FULLY charged battery (right off charger, showing 8.23V using multimeter, and showing 98% in battery info).
The camera will just turn itself off in the middle of shooting, showing empty battery int the shoulder window. The solution is simple, open the battery door, then close it again, no need even to pull the battery.
So, I contacted Canon support, sent the camera to the VA service facility, waiting for it be repaired. As an engineer myself, I understand things fail, and I thought this is such an easy issue to reproduce, anybody should be able to repro it.
Couple of days later, I received a phone call to send my accessories in, no problem, debugging needs more info, that's normal. I sent my lens and stuff in. I unfortunately had to bear the cruel fact that I don't have a decent camera for the holiday, though I have a backup.
After a long wait, on 12/28the, the accessories were delivered at 9:35am. At 10am, they called me, they were sending the camera back. No issue at all. I was like, have you tested AT ALL? They didn't care, sending the camera back regardless.
I received the camera on Jan 2nd, and saw the same issue on that day. Of course, it was NOT fixed at all.
I googled really hard, somebody said he had similar issue but it was a defective battery, so I got a brand new Canon battery, unfortunately, the same issue pops up again.
Ok, the only choice for me is to send it back again.  But this time I am totally amazed by Canon.
I sent the camera in again with my lens and battery. Also, a video showing the issue on a standalone CF card (I know 6D does not take CF, just to put the video on it).
Couples of days later, they called asking for accessories, I was like, what accessories, I don't have any more.
Then the camera sit in their facility for a few days for nothing. All of sudden I received a phone call on Monday morning, said it is ready. The camera has no issue at all.
I called, asked whether they have watched the video, they told me two technicians, including a senior one, was not able to upload the video to the computer. I was like, what the hell? why the heck you need to upload it to the computer, find a card reader, plug the card in, double click, how simple is that?
I talked to the service manager over the phone, he told me that there is nothing he could do, if their technician said so. They have decided to send my camera back, NOT fixed, again. I esclated the issue again, but haven't heard anything back yet.
Honestly, I am totally pissed, how stupid can they be? I included a letter with detailed steps on how to reproduce this issue. As an engineer myself, I know how easy to reproduce this issue. But what shocked me is that they don't even know or they didn't even bother to watch the video. In the same letter, I asked/begged them to contact me if they cannot reproduce the issue instead of just sending it back unfixed.
Guys, any other ways to get their attention? I already filed a BBB complaint. For a brand new camera of 3 months old, it has been in Canon's repair shop for almost a month. Leave to say that I missed the most importand holiday season in the year. This is simply not acceptable.

"The camera usually shuts itself off after 20-100 continuous shot, ..."
By this you mean your are in continuous drive? You just hold the shutter release down until it stops shooting?
    "... the shoulder LCD shows a ..."
    What is the "shoulder" LCD?
Sorry for the extra questions but I am trying to understand exactly what you are going through and why Canon said it is OK.
Canon did not say it was all right if it is not.
You are, also saying, if you use the camera, just for a single snap shot, say several in a session, it is OK? Right?
It only shuts down when on continuous drive or video?

  • Why does my 1st gen iPad always turns itself off and goes back to the screen. Whether I'm reading news, iBooks, etc, suddenly it goes off.

Why does my 1st gen iPad always turns itself off and goes back to the screen. Whether I'm reading news, iBooks, etc, suddenly it goes off.

If that doesn't help, the battery may be dying and need replacement. See here (tap on Battery Replacement): http://support.apple.com/kb/index?page=servicefaq&geo=United_States&product=ipad
Alternately, might consider start saving for a new iPad. The newest iPad 6 should come out in the next few months. When it does, sellers will want to get rid of old inventory with good deals.

  • My MacBook Pro just turned itself off while installing Windows 7. It has now got a black screen with a white flashing bar in the top left corner...what can I do?

I was just installing windows 7 onto my MacBook Pro. I selected to have 200GB for Windows and the rest leave for Mac.
I clicked install and the bar filled up as it should do. However, once the install had completed, my MacBook turned itself off. I assumed this was normal. Now, my MacBook has a black screen with a white flashing underscore in the top left corner.
What is wrong and what should I do?

Hold down the Option key when starting up then on the sceen that comes up select Mac OS X to boot from.
The Win 7 install didn't go well and is hung in some way. You should use boot camp assistant to remove the win partition and start over.
Make sure you are using a Retail version of Win 7. A Branded OEM version, like ones from Dell and HP, will NOT work to install Windows 7 on your Mac.

  • My iphone 5 turns itself off even with full charge

My iPhone 5 turns itself off even with a full charge. Any help would be appreciated.

That's a very strange issue, but at the moment it could be software or hardware - the only way to find out is by restoring the iPhone.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4137 has all the information you need to backup and restore the iPhone.
If it's a software issue, it'll be completely fixed by restoring the iPhone!
If it's hardware, the same thing will still happen even after restoring, and you'll want to get the iPhone serviced.
