MBP superdrive

I have the same problem. When I try to burn DVD+R disk (in my case Verbatim, if this makes any difference) I receive the following error:
The drive reported an error:
Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR
Sense Code = 0x73, 0x03
It is clear that this super drive is able to burn DVD+R's, it is written in the System Profiler and I did burn DVD+R before.
I am using Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549), with all updates, on MBP 13". The super drive is as follows (quote from the System Profiler):
MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-868 :
Révision du programme interne : KB19
Interconnexion : ATAPI
Can anyone give some advise or trow an idea, or something? Thank you

The drive is either dirty, the optical heads, or it has failed. Your interconnection says ATAPI which I thin makes your system more than a few years old as all newer MBPs use a SATA connection for the DVD drive.
Your easiest and least costly option is to buy a external DVD drive that connects by USB port. Any brand will work. It does not have to have the apple name on it for any of these external DVD drives tp work on your Mac. Most cost around $30. Not sure what that would be in your country.

• MBP Superdrive fail to read work-around!

I have discovered a bizarro work-around to get the data off of your backup DVD's if your MBP Superdrive is failing to read properly.
I have a brand new 17" MBP Core 2 machine and the DVD will not read any more than the first half of the files on my backup DVD disks from my old PowerBook which i no longer available to use for xfer.
When all my backup DVD's exhibited the same problem (will copy about 2G of data and then fail with file read error) I suspected the drive rather than the media (I also saw discussions here).
I inserted a movie DVD to see if it would fail to play that as well, but the commercial movie DVD worked fine, even through the final credits. That seemed strange. I reinserted the backup DVD I had just been struggling with, and it now read the files that failed several minutes before! I now got 9/10 the way through the DVD before it again struggled and then failed to read a file.
Replacing the DVD with the movie, I again ran the credits at the end of the movie for a few moments, then ejected it and replaced it with the 'bad' DVD. I could then read the last few files off of it. I continued with this silly '"manual dexterity test" (remember this test from the days of the original 128K Macintosh with a single floppy disk drive?), and got through all 7 of my iTunes backup DVDs. I think I lost maybe 3 to 5 songs to bad DVD tracks, so that was a 99.9999% success rate, rather than a less than 50% success rate that I started out with.
The important points in the process are:
- this obviously won't work with a "multi-DVD single file" DVD like from using the Apple Backup application. It does work for me for DVD's with > 800 big files on it;
- running the movie DVD seems to "re-set" the Superdrive's heads to the correct positions;
- the heads then gradually run astray after more reads, and can't read the data DVD properly after another ~400 files (1 - 2G) or so (your milage may vary);
- when you hear the Superdrive come to a halt, that means you're toast again and it's time to swap out the data DVD for the movie DVD;
- when you go for the next try on your data DVD, don't futz around getting onies-twosies files - select and go for the entire remaining batch - you have nothing to lose;
- after a successful copy of nnn files with no error message, IMMEDIATELY grab more files and drag and drop them as quickly as possible. Don't let the Superdrive stop spinning or you are again toast, and it's time to eject and run the movie DVD again for a minute;
- it's VERY IMPORTANT that when you get the first Finder "can't read file" error to click Ok and then IMMEDIATELY eject the DVD. Don't click on the Finder window, try to scroll up the list of files, deselect files or do anything else, otherwise the poor Finder will grind away for another 10 minutes trying to complete whatever it's doing to redisplay the current list of the directory on the DVD!
- If there is a bad file, you will have to skip it on the next cycle of read attempts - I couldn't get it to read a few files that were obviously corrupt to begin with. However, you should try to re-read the file it fails on at least once - I was successful in re-reading the file it failed on > 95% of the time!
I hope this convoluted work-around works for you if you are desperately seeking backup data!

Walter Cooke

what does the "reset" input do? check its polarity vs what the rst block expects, or better yet, just connect ext_reset_in to fclk_reset0_n.
as to why you don't see anything when you write to unaligned addresses is that your program silently crashes as axi-lite slaves don't implement them and return an error which you are not catching.

• Bizzarre behaviour of MBP superdrive

Hi all,
My MBP's superdrive behaves strangely: it burns correctly CD/DVDs, it reads CDs, but when it comes to read DVDs (any kind, new from store, just burned from it, whatever DVD, etc) it chomps them for 10 seconds and then just spits them out. Weird, isn't it? I've read many answers here, I tried clearing the PRAM/NVRAM, with no success.
I understand this to be a very common problem, and with different number of hardware, thus I would suggest to Apple to investigate it, since it looks like if you mount the same hardware on a windows machine, it works.
My drive is a: HL-DT-ST DVDRW GWA4080MA

• 13"MBP + SuperDrive Firmware

I recently got a 13" MBP late December that came with 10.6.0 and if i recall the Superdrive on startup didnt make any noise, but not after transferring one user account from my old MacBook Pro (which was running 10.5.8 without the SuperDrive Firmware) it makes it on start up only.
Its not a big deal, im just wondering if that was normal as i though it was suppose to silence it completely?
could it have been when i transferred by User Account over via migration assistant?
(its a non-primary, non-admin account).
thank you.

Hi FrankBobandy,
I'm at a loss then. Every Apple portable that I've owned since 1994 has made an audible self check on startup as far as I can recall. The noise varies from machine to machine but they've all pretty much consistently made a noise.
The next logical step would be to perform a full backup, wipe the system, reinstall the OS and see if the noise exists. If it does, then it wasn't the imported user. If it doesn't, I'm still not convinced it was the imported user. I'd then reimport the user and go from there (or you could consider restoring from backup).
The user directory doesn't store any system level functions, library data or any parameters that would modify firmware, EFI or normal startup sequences. Which is why I'm stubborn on pointing fingers at the imported user. I don't see what would have brought over to affect a startup, pre-OS function.

• Burned CD won't read in MBP Superdrive

When I was discharged from the hospital recently, they gave me a disc with all of my x-rays. Unfortunately, the disc won't read in my MBP. It inserts just fine, spins for a second, but never actually mounts on the desktop. When I eject the disc, I see the cd mount image briefly appear on the desktop before the disc pops out.
Anyone have any clues on how I can get this disc to mount without pulling out my crusty windows laptop? Thanks.

Usually, medical imaging uses the DICOM format. You need a DICOM viewer, eg

• MBP superdrive does not accept commercial audio cds

Hi people,
My superdrive mostly does not accept commercial audio cds when i keep on trying it accepts them sometimes but you cannot say under which circumstances.
I already tried to resolve this with a "reset -all" in the single user mode but this just lead to acceptance of the first inserted audio cd afterwards it was problematic again to load audio cds.
Does anybody know something that helps to make the drive reliably accept all cds of this kind?
THANKS

Yep, to me this is an issue with your optical drive.
Contact Apple (in the USA call 800-275-2273 for other locations check [this list|http://www.apple.com/support/contact/phone_contacts.html]) or carry it in to an Apple retail store for repairs. Be sure to [make an appointment|http://www.apple.com/retail] first or you may wait a long time to talk to a Mac Genius. Tell them what has been done and get it repaired.
Best of luck.

• New MBP Superdrive does not burn DL DVD - I'm taking it to Apple today

My two-week old MBP is wonderful. Except for the inability to burn double layer DVDs. I took the advice of the Apple salespersons and bought DVDs at another store. They said these would work. Out of the first four attempts BURN did make two DVDs of my pictures. Then errored out on the next eight attempts. So I have an appointment at the Apple store later today. I will keep you posted.

I'm at the Apple Store Genius Bar right now. Bottom line seems clear that I purchased a bad batch of Memorex DVDs. Two of mine failed and two of theirs worked. Same brand, etc. Oh well. Guess I'll buy Verbatim next.

• 15" MBP SuperDrive Read & Write Speeds

Could someone please point me in the direction of where it shows the read and write speeds of my 15" MacBook Pro? I know I found them once before but can't remember where.
Also, where can I buy some cheap DVD-Rs & DVD-RWs? Thanks.

You can find the SuperDrive details on the MacBook Pro Tech Specs page.
I usually use dealmac to search for good prices on media.

• At What Point Should a MBP SuperDrive Pull in Disc?

Couldn't really find anything specific about this, but title basically says it all: At what point should a MacBook Pro SuperDrive pull in a disc?
I ask because it seems as though I need to basically push it in as far as it can go before it gets sucked in.
Thanks in advance!

It won't pull it in until there's less then 1cm left out (i.e. almost all the way in before it pulls the rest)

• MBP Superdrive Won't Burn CD's

I continually get the error:
"Burning the disc failed because communication to the disc drive failed. (Error Code 0x80020022)"
The only successful burn I got was by slowing down the burn to 8x.
Any ideas what could be causing this?

If all of us with this problem did this, Apple sales would take a nosedive. Everyone I've spoken with who owns a Macbook or Macbook Pro tells the same story: "error code 0x80020022." That says it all.
Apple's silence suggests that the problem is so profound and pervasive that simply ignoring the complaints and waiting for users to find other ways of burning discs is cheaper than a repair. That would be sad.

• Windows 7 install problems: MBP problem?

I cannot mount the Windows 7 (Home Premium 64bit) installer DVD no matter what I do on my new (recvd today) MBP.
The disk mounts fine on my Mac Pro. I also tried the Windows 7 Ultimate DVD I used to install windows on the Mac Pro using Bootcamp and it also refuses to mount. The MBP spits out both of the DVD in disgust (I have some sympathy for that but still...). No. I dont try to insert both at once...
I tried creating an ISO copy of the installer DVD on the pro and then burning the ISO using the MBPs Superdrive. This WILL mount but Boocamp assistant does not recognise it. GAH!
I tried remote disk sharing. Again, the disk mounts fine on the Pro and is shared/mounted on the MBP... but once again Bootcamp assistant refuses to recognise it.
There is something odd about all this and I have ran out of ideas for now... any pointers, suggestions, etc... gratefully received!
This is a new MBP 15", newly rcvd. I have ran update. Pulled out hair. Considered sacrificing a cat. And given up... for now.

Yes I think you are right. I hate computers. And emergent behaviour. My cats are cool tho' ;-)
I have booked a 'genius' session - will be interesting. I do wonder how they deal with folk - I imagine I am an edge case. A bloke with over 20 yrs experience in IT. Probably not a typical Mac user!
Meanwhile I am contemplating alternative approaches. My assumption is that bootcamp manages (or at least attempts) a non-destructive repartitioning of the disk and then reboots to enable the Windows installer to load up. If that is the case then some other partitioning tool could be used to create a new partition. A reboot from the installer DVD should then get me rolling. I have the bootcamp tools & drivers on another DVD ready... so good to go?
My other thought is to set up a thunderbolt based external disk and see of that would work.... but that would be ££££ expensive and Windows 7 may not boot up over thunderbolt. Will have google it I suppose.

• So... Can I buy MBP now?

Hello everyone,
So, I have made up my mind and decided to invest into newly 2.16GHz, 1GB RAM, 256VRAM, 100GB MBP (this is not a built-to-order, but a stock one from the Apple store). I will go to buy it sometimes next month. And after days and hours searching and reading a lots of threads here, may I ask you the following questions:
1. Should I buy the MBP at this moment or should I wait for a while. I definitely need computer for my job but 1 or 2 months I can wait. I guess the machine got some problem when it was first launched, but now is about more than 1/2 year later so...
2. The MBP SuperDrive is also my big concern. Does Apple improve something on it by now or it is still picky on old or other media such as old and burnt CDs/DVDs I have had before with my PB 15"?
3. As far as Universal appl. concern, I assume that I can stay with the Rosetta for those are not Universal. But on the top of it, does anyone hadve bad experience with Photoshop CS2, Microsoft Office 2004 for MAC, some chat program and some browser, like Firefox?
Thank you very much for any story, any advice and I am waiting to hearing from you in order to buy the new MBP.
Thanks a lot,
James

Well of course, nobody is making you purchase a MBP, so you can purchase whenever you want to! Would it be wise to purchase now? According to reports that I've read and my own personal experience, I can say that the problems such as the CPU whine, mooing, and heat (but to a lesser extent, I'll admit) do still exist and people have been reporting these issues on computers that are as new as week 21! However, problems on newer models seem to be more widespread, but keep in mind that beauty, and ugliness, are in the eye of the beholder...
If you can wait, it certainly wouldn't hurt. Even if Apple are still using the Core Duo chips in 1-2 months, you might be able to get a free speed bump out of the deal or, if they decide to slap in the Merom chips ASAP, waiting could grant you a cooler, hopefully problem-free Core 2 Duo chip. Of course, others will say that you can wait forever as computers are constantly being outdated and updated by new technology. But to be honest, looking back on my own experience, getting a Rev A machine has been a mistake and I probably should've waited for the Core 2 Duo chip. (My circumstance and method for obtaining an MBP were slightly different and I didn't have much of a choice, but I do miss my PB now...)
As for the SuperDrive, I can say with confidence that it burns my audio CDs just fine. Outside of that, I can't comment because I've never burned a DVD in my life!
PPC app performance with Rosetta is okay, but definitely bulk up on the RAM to make it closer to "snappy". Despite high clock speed, a second core, and more RAM, MS Office was by far more responsive and smooth on my PowerBook and I do encounter the beach ball every so often on my MBP as I type. I've actually had to slow down my typing on occasion to allow Rosetta to "catch up". Not really a huge problem though. Also, web browsers shouldn't be too much of a concern especially since the Mozilla group has released Universal versions of their browsers, or at least Camino. I use it instead of Safari and its great; same concept as Firefox but with more of a Mac look and feel.
As a disgruntled MBP owner, my advice is to wait and see what the future holds. If nothing else, it might at least bring some type of official fix for the CPU whine from Apple, whether it be a logic board exchange or a firmware update. And at the very worst, you lose nothing and can still buy the same machine in two months that you could've today.
Good luck!

• Superdrive Update 2.1 killed my superdrive, Apple refuses to fix it

Those of you familiar with the issue probably know that there used to be a superdrive firmware update for MacBook Pros. My computer recieved this firmware upgrade 1 month after my warranty expired. At the time, I was in China for school. I recently came back to California and took my MBP to the local apple store. The "geniuses" told me they were unaware of the problem and since my laptop is out of warranty, it is my responsibility to pay for the repair - $310. Spoke to the manager, who explained that he has been working there for a LONG time and has never heard of anyone with this problem. Called Apple Care, told me they can't help me. Got transfered to customer relations, told me very politely that there is no way the firmware update could have killed the superdrive. That it must have been something else that caused the superdrive to stop working. When I mentioned the users on the forum, they said that forum posters sometimes don't know what they are talking about.
Very disappointed with Apple's attitude when an issue like this arises. Let me know if anyone has any suggestions. My main concern is not being able to re-install OS X or Windows XP through bootcamp since I do not have an external DVD-drive.

Hi, tbk568. Firstly, you've posted in a forum devoted to the "unibody" MBP that was released in October 2008, and that isn't the model you have. Secondly, there is no trace on Apple's Downloads site of any such thing as SuperDrive Firmware Update 2.1. There's a 2.0, but that isn't applicable to any MBP. You seem firmly convinced that everyone knows the apparently nonexistent firmware update "kills" MBP SuperDrives, and anyone who doesn't admit it is less than responsible. But we don't have any idea why you believe that, and you haven't mentioned any supporting evidence or provided links to anything that might shed any additional light on your complaint. So we're pretty much at a loss.
I suggest reposting your question in whichever forum on the page linked below contains previous posts that seem related to your problem:
http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=250
I suspect the chances that you'll convince Apple to replace your drive for free are negligible under the circumstances. If you can't make any further progress with Apple or are disinclined to try, then I recommend that you buy an external SuperDrive or replace your internal one yourself. Either option will cost less than a third of what you were quoted for the replacement by Apple, and will enable you to move on.

• Week 24 MBP Works Great! Thanks Everyone...

Hi Everyone,
First of all I just wanted to thank everyone who participates in this forum. I spent a lot of time on here for research purposes before purchasing my MBP in June and learned a lot, so I thought I'd do my part and drop a quick review of my MBP.
For people who are thinking of buying a MBP but are concerned about the whine, or the heat, just know, THEY'RE NOT ALL BAD. This is only the second notebook I've owned so I don't have much to compare it to, but I love my MBP.
It does get warm, but there have been no kernal panics, no burns, none of the things that I saw people complaining about when I was doing research. I'm resting my wrists/hands on my MBP as I type right now and its definetely warm, it'll probably feel really nice in the winter time, but its not "hot," and this is the absolute warmest it gets. The only part that gets to a point I'd consider "hot" is the thin strip of aluminum above the F keys, but its hot enough to burn anyone, I could rest my finger there as long as I wanted and not flinch, and u never really need to touch up there anyways. I haven't tried using it on my lap so I can't speak to how hot it gets there, but ur not supposed to use it on ur lap. On a desk, my MBP is fine heat-wise.
As far as the whine goes, it's not silent all the time, sometimes there is a very very quiet noise that simply sounds like the CPU working, but it's only noticeable in a quiet room and it seems to be very normal and expected. What notebook is COMPLETELY silent??? Now although the noise is very very quiet, it does contain a very high pitched frequency that might bug some young people with sensative hearing in a very quiet room, but I'm 20, I can hear it, and it does not bother me. It's not loud at all, it's just really high pitched...
The only thing that I don't love is the superdrive. Again, I'm no expert, but it doesnt seem very sturdy to me. U have to practically shove the disk all the way in to get it in, and it's very loud going in. Then when I burn a disk it can get very very loud when the disk is spinning, and it has difficulty reading a lot of CD's. It seems very random to me. Sometimes it will have no problem reading an old, scratched up CD-R, but then I'll try inserting a brand new album I just bought from a music store, and it won't read it. It seems to get pickier the more u use it, like after importing a bunch of CD's into iTunes it has trouble, and giving it a break does seem to do the trick, but it really shouldn't have those problems.
Everything else it wonderful. It's fast as ****, it looks good, and it's given me no serious troubles. So far I'm very happy with my purchase and I can't wait to get deeper into it (it's my first Mac).
Oh, I forgot, it did get stuck in sleep mode about a week ago, but all I did was remove the battery and reset it real quick, and since then everythings been fine.
In case ur wondering, mine's a custom built, 15.4", 2.16 GHz, 2 GB, 100 GB 7200 rpm. Shipping was ultra fast too. Any questions feel free to ask.

hi Kyle - Welcome to Apple Discussions!
The only thing that I don't love is the superdrive.
Again, I'm no expert, but it doesnt seem very sturdy
to me. U have to practically shove the disk all the
way in to get it in, and it's very loud going in.
same here. i was used to the way my optical drive worked on
my TiBook, and this MBP superdrive does indeed "think different".
***** the disk in at the last minute, so to speak... initially
loud yes, but quiet while working...
Then when I burn a disk it can get very very loud
when the disk is spinning, and it has difficulty
reading a lot of CD's.
since you just bought it, you might want to make sure
there isn;t actually a latent problem there before your
14 day return period ends... did you buy it at an apple store?
if so, find a way to reproducibly reproduce the problem,
then go show a genius....
Oh, I forgot, it did get stuck in sleep mode about a
week ago, but all I did was remove the battery and
reset it real quick, and since then everythings been
fine.
i too noticed that if i just close the lid (without sleeping it
explicitly first, like i did a million times on my TiBook)
that it doesn't always really sleep.
not having the time or interest to really investigate
it, what i do now is explicitly sleep it (from the apple
menu), then i wait 5sec until i see the LED start to pulse
before i close the lid....
In case ur wondering, mine's a custom built, 15.4",
2.16 GHz, 2 GB, 100 GB 7200 rpm. Shipping was ultra
fast too. Any questions feel free to ask.
oh - the 14 day return period i mentioned earlier doesn't apply to you
as you got a CTO machine... take it to a genius if you can, if
not post back...
FWIW i have precisely the same machine as you... and i too feel like
my machine is just wonderful.... congrats on your new baby...
cheers

• Optical Drive reads some DVD's, but also ejects some - help

I just had a DVD made from an old video tape, put it in my MBP superdrive, it played just fine. I left it in the drive and the next morning when I woke up the computer, the DVD spun and then ejected. Since then it won't load at all. I've tried other DVD's, some work, some don't. The DVD plays just fine in my old iBook. In Disk Utility, I did the repair permissions, that didn't work. I have restarted, shut down and even reset the SMC, the DVD still won't play. My drive info: Model:HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N, Revision: AP09. This sort of thing has happened before with this drive. Any suggestions?

I've had similar problems with my original MBP early 2006's DVD drive, but a good squirt of compressed air in the slot seems to consistently fix the problem. A lot of dust here in AZ where I live
Hope that's all it is...-Karen-
