MBP takes 10 mins to start & locks in desktop

Hi all
I have the the 2.2GHz C2D MacBook Pro with the dreaded 8600GT in it. Got it off eBay unfortunately.
When I first got it, it took about 10 minutes to boot into Snow Leopard and then would sit at the desktop for a further few minutes before I could click anything (could move the pointer though). After that, the system would be absolutely fine. No graphical glitches, no slow downs, no crashes, nothing. I could game quite happily on it all day with no problem whatsoever.
Thinking it was the hard drive, I replaced that with a new 500GB Seagate drive. Same problem. So I replaced the RAM. Same problem. Tried RAM from a friend's MacBook. You guessed it.
Have now formatted and reinstalled Snow Leopard 3 times and the problem exists whether it's at 10.6 or 10.6.7. Repairing disk permissions does nothing.
All the console shows at the time of freezing is a KCGErrorFailure pertaining to the Window Server.
It sounds like it could be the dreaded GeForce problem, yet there's absolutely nothing graphical to suggest that!
It boots into safe mode absolutely fine with no slow downs whatsoever.
Please help!

Just don't tell them that unless asked about body/case modifications
(You can say professionally installed and tested too)
Apple has been quoted as saying that the RAM/HDD/SD are user accessible and/or replaceable.
If you didn't rip any Do Not Remove stickers, you should be fine.
Do you know your Mac Model ID like MBP 2007 3,1 4,1(2008)?
If so, just check out MacTracker to properly identify which MBP model you have

  • MBP takes several minutes to start...  then very slow... HELP!

This is a duplicate of a post I have in the MBP forums, but was suggested to me that I may want to post it here as well.....
My MBP is coming up on 3 years old this December... Since upgrading to Leopard in early summer this year the system seems rather slow... especially starting up. It takes 3+ minutes usually. I didn't do a "clean", reformatted install with the OS install (which I may do once I back up my entire drive). I'm using approx. 70 gigs on my internal HD and the system states nearly 35 gigs availible... I have run Tech Tools Deluxe and Maintenance and they verify all is fine. I ran "sudo dmesg" in Terminal, and this is the report:

I'd like to clean up my MBP and get rid of anything that is not needed or that may be slowing the machine down.... trying to get it to run faster, like when it was new.....
...what am I missing? What else should I do? Should I just do the reformat install of the OS once I back up to Time Machine?
I should add that although I usually have a few devices connected to my USB/ Firewire ports, for the above test, I made sure nothing was attached to my MBP.
    Thanx,
    Tony

I'll try. Have you tried basic maintenance? How much ram is installed?
Disconnect all peripherals from your computer. Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk.
    Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751
Check your login items. Check to see which items you can eliminate or disable.
If you have Diskwarrior, Techtool Pro or Drive Genius run them directly from the disc.

  • IMac takes 20 min to start up.

My 2011 iMac 21.5 inch is taking too long to startup.
Once I pressed power button it make start up chime sound and start normally exactly after 20 min.
After booting up every thing was fine.
And I am getting crancking hiss sound continuosly from backside of my iMac.
Is this a software issue or a hardware one?
Plzz help me about this issue.

    Hi ...
For the startup issues, remove any items in System Preferences > Users & Groups - Login Items
    Same for   /Library/Startup Items
As for the, "crancking hiss sound", might be a good idea to make an appointment at a  Genius Bar or take your Mac to an Apple certified repair provider.

  • MBP takes long time to start up and applications freeze up

This has been a problem for a while now and I tried deleting the harddrive and reinstalling all of my software but it didn't work.  Safari can work for a while but regularly freezes up so I have to force quit and reopen.  Some applications like Pages don't even open most of the time and the icon just continues to bounce endlessly.  I upgraded the software recently but it's still a problem.  Does anyone know what the issue might be?
    Thanks in advance.

  • My 2007 iMac (lion) starts, logo appears, status bar shows up, takes 2 mins to finish, then shuts off

My 2007 iMac (lion) starts, logo appears, status bar shows up, takes 2 mins to finish, then shuts off. Please help!

This sounds like a hard drive issue. First I would try to boot to safe mode: OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? - Apple Support
If that works do a backup ASAP with Time Machine: Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support or copy your important files to an external drive if they are not already backed up. If that does not work, Boot to recovery:  OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support
The next step would be verifying and if needed repairing the hard drive using Disk Utility.
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck - Apple Support
If it successfully repairs, do a restart and see if it boots as normal. If it cannot be repaired, it means that the hard drive has failed/is failing. If you do not have the data backed up you could try getting the data using target disk mode: OS X Mountain Lion: Transfer files between two computers using target disk mode ,booting from an external drive that has OS X installed on it: OS X: Installing OS X on an external volume - Apple Support, or 3rd party data recovery service.
After data is backed up or recovered, you would need to do an erase and install of OS X: OS X: How to erase and install - Apple Support
If it fails to erase, then the hard drive needs to be replaced.

  • Mavericks takes 11 mins to boot, what is causing this?

I believe this has started happening since upgrading from Mountain Lion to Mavericks.  Applications take a long time to start and the Mac is generally sluggish.  ML did not show this behaviour.
My MBP takes 11 minutes in total from power on to restoring Mail, Google Chrome, Sublime Text 2, Terminal, 1Password.  I also started Console while it was booting up to check it's progress.  It took 11 minutes before I had my 6 tabs loaded in Chrome and the Mac was usable.
I've noticed that there is a truckload of messages in my system.log, and many of them don't look good.  There is so much however, that I'm not sure where to start investigating the problem.  Can anyone help to point to the cause of this problem?  My Mac is becoming unusable for daily work at this point.

  • MBP takes 1.25 minutes to boot up!

    Hi all!
I've seen that most MBP take on average from 35 to 40 seconds to start and be ready to work. Mine takes 1.25 minutes to do it! To top it up, it's not really ready to work, it still takes a few (15) other seconds to let me open apps smoothly. If I try to open anything right after boot up, it starts to stumble.
I've already tried all tricks I've found here: duplicated fonts (which I had); boot from DVD; repair permissions; run Onyx and delete caches and so on. My computer keeps taking ages to boot up; what else should I do?
    Help please!

    Thank you all guys!
I tried the method above, but also I've been keeping an eye on my console to see what happens at boot up. Finding the VirtualPC problem (mentioned above), my approach was to track down all VirtualPC stuff in my MBP and delete it.
Doing these two things, the boot up time's been reduced from 1.25 (or more) to 54 secs. However there is one more thing that could still be making my MBP stumble and it's the following messages on the console:
    +4/19/10 1:05:28 AM com.apple.loginwindow[41] 2010-04-19 01:05:28.949 loginwindow[41:107] Can't open input server /Library/InputManagers/LCC Scroll Enhancer Loader+

And the list goes on, being the (LCC Scroll enhancer) the one with more appearances.
    What can I do?
    Thanks heaps

  • Hi my mini ipad has locked me out and says connect to Itunes but it wont connect to it

Hi my mini ipad has locked me out and says connect to Itunes but it wont connect to it

    Try:
Placing your device into recovery (DFU-Device Firmware Upgrade) mode:
Follow these steps to place your iOS device into recovery mode. If your iOS device is already in recovery mode, you can proceed immediately to step 6.
       1. Disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, but leave the
other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
       2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds
until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
                  * If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the
Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off,
release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.
      3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the
device. The device should turn on. Note: If you see the battery charge warning,
let the device charge for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has some
charge, and then start with step 2 again.
      4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen.
When this screen appears you can release the Home button:
      5. If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the following "recovery mode" alert:
      6. Use iTunes to restore the device.
If you don't see the "Connect to iTunes" screen, try these steps again. If you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen but the device does not appear in iTunes, see this article and its related links.
Note: When using recovery mode, you can only restore the device. All user content on the device will be erased, but if you had previously synced with iTunes on this computer, you can restore from a previous backup. See this article for more information.

  • Why does it take 40 minutes to start watching a rental on Apple TV but only seconds to start watching Netflix?

Why does it take 40 minutes to start watching a rental on Apple TV but only seconds to start watching Netflix?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
The first thing to check would be your internet download speed, you can do this at www.speedtest.net.
HD movies require a recommended speed of 6 Mbps, while SD movies require a recommended speed of 2.5 Mbps.
Netflix movies are adaptive and vary their quality according to your connection and can be as low as 0.5 Mbps.
But remember lower datarates = lower quality.

  • Hp g60 notebook become excruciatingly slow. 10 mins to start up

    Hello:
    I have a HP g60 Notebook pc
    Product#VU191UA#abc
Out of the blue, it just became uber slow. Takes 10-20 mins to start up. wont allow me to de fragment or check disc. It freezes. I tried to back up HD after 8 hours it fails. I have a toshiba Hd and 4 gigs of Ram.
Looks like the HD is gone kaput. But not sure, Any ideas?

    Hi,
Run the Hard drive diagnostics and check if it passes... Here are the link with the steps to perform System Diagnostics on the hard drive:
    System Diagnostics (F2)
    Or,
    Perform Hard Drive Tests
If it gives any errors then most likely the hard drive has gone bad and needs a replacement. If test passed then we can determine that it is due to some software problem..
    Note:
If you have HP Support Assistant installed on the computer(The Blue Question Mark) then open it ==> Complete all pending Updates & Tuneups==> Restart and Check. It may solve your problem
Although I am an HP employee, I am speaking for myself and not for HP.

  • New imac mini cannot start as pick  up profile of my old  macpro notebook with forgotten  password

just puchased a  imac mini  and  started at home  where I have  a wireless environment  with time  capsule  and  a macbook  pro notebook. At the  start the minimac  recognised the time  machine and  asked it  if  wanted to take  the same profile of  the  notebook. I said yes and  before  launching the  operating  system  asked  the  administartor  password of the notebook. Despite  the  hint  used  I  realised  cannot remember  the password.  I  reset  the  password  in my  laptop using the operating  disk of  my  laptop (which  worked  fine). However  the mac mini  still  is  askig  for  the  old  password.  is  there  a  way to go around  this as  i  am  running   out  of  options.
can i  restart the  miniac using  a  different  profile  altogher?

You are describing features of Muti-User simultaneous login. The cube spins (away from the currently logged-in User) to give you a fresh login screen. The old User is suspended, and you can log in.

  • Why did my iPad Mini screen start glitching out of no where?!

Why did my iPad Mini screen start glitching out of no where?! Hard reset did not fix issue... Which I could barely see the display at it was.. Please help..

Has the unit EVER been jailbroke?  Has it EVER been dropped?  Did it EVER get excessively wet?  Did you EVER load a pirated developer's version of the IOS?
If "No" to all the above, first try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  You WILL lose all of your data (game scores, etc,) but, for the most part, you can redownload apps and music without being charged again.  Also, if you have IOS-7, read this.

I bought a MBP 13 inch, it has started to give me temperature trouble. I installed SMC fan control, and there only right side fan RPM is shown. Does it mean my left side fan is spoiled? I brought it about 3 months ago.

You are under warranty. Take the MBP to an Apple Store, or Apple Certified Reseller and have them perform a hardware evaluation.
