MBP Unresponsive after waking from sleep
Hey Guys, I have found some similar discussions but nothing has helped me so far so I figured I would ask this in my own words and see if anyone has a solution.
Occasionally (up to once per day) I will try to wake my MBP and it will be completely unresponsive, forcing me to force-shut-down using the power button. When this happens the fan will be running at a high speed and the entire computer will be very hot.
This may have something to do with using second displays as this seems to happen frequently after using displays, however, it seems to happen without using secondary displays as well.
Please help! This has been going on for quite some time and it is driing me crazy!
Spencer
Processor 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics Intel HD Graphics 288 MB
Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 (11D50)
Thanks, Linc. I was worried that since this was a refurbished computer, it was dying again. Makes sense, although alittle annoying that nothing really warns you this is happening. I almost cycled power the first couple times it happened, thinking it was stuck while waking.

Trackpad unresponsive after waking from sleep with new 17" MacBookPro
We have two 17" MacBookPros and both have this symptom. After waking from sleep or booting, the trackpad is unresponsive. Eventually full control comes back to the trackpad but it takes a while.
Both computers are up to date with all software.
Any thoughts?
Really irritating.Perhaps they are freezing for awhile? Maybe basic repairs are in order.
Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them. Disk Utility's Disk Repair is not perfect and may not find or repair all directory issues. A stronger utility may be required to finish the job.
After that Repair Permissions.
No need to report Permissions errors....we all get them.

Sound volume control unresponsive after waking from sleep
Lately, a strange problem has developed on my MacBook 13-inch Aluminum (Late 2008), running Mac OS X 10.6.4:
After waking the MacBook from sleep, the sound volume control keys on the keyboard does not affect the volume control of:
* Neither the sound volume output by the built-in speakers,
* nor the sound volume indicator/slider in the menubar,
* nor the sound volume indicator/slider in the Sound preference pane in System Preferences,
Only the sound volume slider/indicator in the Sound preference pane in System Preferences has an effect on the actual volume ouput by the built-in speakers.
First I thought the problem was affected by disconnecting a set of analog headphones while the MacBook was sleeping -- it seemed that after sleep the volume control keys on the keyboard and menubar item still was set to affect the headphone port and not the built-in speakers.
However, the problem just occured after sleeping without anything connected to the MacBook. The built-in speakers were muted, when the MacBook lid was closed, and the computer went to sleep - after waking from sleep the built-in speakers were unmuted - and control was only possible through System Preferences.
Any ideas? Not sure if you stumbled on the other threads like this one:

I've been having the same problem on my Mac Pro for a while, finally decided to see if there were some other people having the problem. I'll see if the others have a solution yet.
One workaround I've been doing is to go to Preferences -> Sound and select a different output device. For me, I have to flick to Internal Speakers and then back to Line Out.

External Hard disk unresponsive after waking from sleep
i have an external usb2 drive connected to my 15" mbp. when waking from sleep, the drive is shown as mounted by accessing it gives me the spinning beachball icon and the computer stops responding until i pull out the usb cable from the mbp. it then proceeds to give me a device removal error. the external drive draws power from the usb bus.
other than this one issue the hard drive works perfectly on both ports.I got home from work today and was forced to hard restart AGAIN. It seems to be happening more and more often now, but maybe that is just me.
My logitech revolution mouse has never caused problems before with a g4 powerbook or g5 tower. The last thing I added was the apple wireless keyboard. I can't imagine it being the problem since it is using an apple product with an apple computer.

I don't know if that has anything to do with the issue I'm having or not. Help!!! -
System unresponsive after waking from sleep
I've been looking at G4 dual 1.25ghz MDD, which for ages has been impossible to wake from sleep without a hard restart.
Anyway, we've done a complete erase, reformat, re-install 10.4.11 which has cured the problem almost, but not entirely.
The computer now merrily goes to and wakes from sleep, with the display reappearing and the cursor visible and active, but the system is completely unresponsive for about 20 seconds, then it is back to normal. Any attempt to click on a dock icon in that period leads to a bouncing icon, but the application will not launch. After about 10 seconds of this the system will completely stop, except that the cursor will still freely move around the screen.
Checked the ram, zapped PRAM, NVRAM, PRAM battery is not that old and should be ok, but I haven't yet tried with a fresh one, no other USB or FW devices attached, monitor attached by VGA.
Anyone got any other ideas?Reset PMU ? Although from what you say, it's doesn't look like a PMU problem.
Could be AppleTalk restarting, or something else that stops when you put the Mac to sleep.
Many MDD users had a similar issue when wakin g from sleep, usually with an ADC monitor, rather than VGA or DVI, requiring the PMU reset as the MDD had to power up the monitor too (not on it's own power supply as it is with DVI / VGA) and it would have trouble doing so. -
IMac is unresponsive after waking from sleep
Have a late 2006 20 inch iMac
This just started happening... after a long sleep when you wake screen is either blank or frozen.
Restart does NOT help... Just have a blank screen. Sometimes a flashing question mark
The only way is to restart with a safe boot. Then it takes at least 10 minutes to come back up.
Then if you restart it's ok until it goes to sleep again.
Sometime just checking something like mail will freeze the system
Have done the pram reset. Used disk utilities to check/repair HD... Said all was fine. repaired permissions etc.
Was running system 10.5.8 upgraded to system to 10.6.4 same results
Have not done a complete erase of HD yet
Any ideas? ThanksI'm having the same issue with my Macbook, and it started just after I updated to 10.6.5. This has happened ~5 times in the last week and I never had this problem before. Either there's a blank screen after wake or there is no response when I type into the log in screen (I have mine set up to require a password after wake)

After waking from sleep, my iMac (Lion) is unresponsive. The mouse moves, but when I click things it won't open them.
This has happened EVERY time the iMac goes to sleep for the last few days.. the only way I have found to resolve the issue is to manually restart the computer each time via the button on the back of the iMac.
Any and all help is appreciated!
ThanksFWIW, I never sleep my machines or their HDs, just their displays and never have an issue waking up the displays, usually run 24/7. Give that a shot.

Freeze after waking from sleep mode on MBP retina
After waking from sleep mode my MBP retina freezes for 3-5 seconds. Mouse and touchpad don't work. I wonder if it's mountain lion problem or hardware problem. Anyone faced this?
Just got a brand new model and OS X 10.8.2 (12C3012) and face the same issue, almost everytime it sleeps for too long. This is not a 3rd type SDD, this is a standard Apple SSD. I turned off the BT, I removed the almost every option from the battery saver mode. The current test is to disable the power nap - I will let you all know the result in a few hours.

Sorry for the huge post. The lightspeed kext shouldn't be causing problem as we use this program for all mac machines, I also did extensive troubleshooting with it. I did ask her to stop using the logitech USB device but she said it didn't make a difference, it was a plug and play device, would it still cause this issue without having it plugged in?
Thanks in advance for the help. Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether your problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
External Hard Drive Fail After Waking from Sleep
Hi,
I've been having this issue for over a year (since upgrading to Lion, and now still persists after upgrading to Mountain Lion), and I haven't been able to find the exact answer I need after searching through the posts here, and on the internet.
I have a 2011 MBP, and after upgrading to Lion last year, I've noticed that my WD external hard drive for the Mac has issues to be recognized after the laptop wakes from sleep. The drive icons are still there on the desktop, and all the files are listed. However, I cannot open any of the files, and Time Machine backup automatically fails.I am able to eject the drives by dragging the icons into the trash can. However, nothing happens if I simply unplug the fire wire 800 cable and re-plug it into the computer after ejecting the drives. I need to reset the external drive by unplugging both the fire wire cable and the power supply, and replug everything.
Aside from being a hampering process after waking from sleep, this is also very stressful on the drive itself, so I would like to fix this. Does anyone know the issue behind this or have a solution? Thanks in advance! Thanks for this, and apologies for delay in replying...in between seeing your post I backed up the ext hdd to another mac and used the disc utility to erase and repair and then re mounted the ext hdd. OK. I have then tested the ext hdd being recognised when waking from sleep mode a few times and everything appears to be fine. If this doesn't work (long term) I will follow the instructions as you have suggested....
I now have a new problem with my HP printer (Photosmart Plus) which is not being recognised by a new wireless router..Ok whilst the router is switch on and I have reconfigured the printer..but when the router is switched off overnight and then switched back on...I get a 'printer is not connected' message and have to go through the re configure routine all over. I am minded to think this is a router problem as the same issue is happening to my wifes Mac Book Pro (which is only a few weeks old)...any suggestions.. -
Macbook pro 2010 crashes after waking from sleep
Hi,
I upgraded to mountain lion a month or so ago and ever since my MBP often crashes after waking from sleep. I've included the error report below. Any help would be appreciated. After it restarts, it works fine. Problem consistently happens after waking from sleep.
Thank-you

After upgrading to Tiger, freeze after waking from sleep on PM G4
My experience with Tiger in the past week as not been great. The reason I upgraded was to get iSync 2.1, so that my Moto E815 phone could be sync'd with my OSX AddresBook and iCal. This wasn't possible with the latest version of Panther.
So, I upgraded to Tiger 10.4.3, and now my G4 freezes immediately after waking from sleep. After pressing the 'return' key to wake the computer, the G4 sends a signal to wake the monitor, but on top of the screen saver is a black text box which states there was a problem I must press (and hold) the power button to restart the Mac. It's written in four languages.
When I installed Tiger, I used the 'archive' option.
My computer is a bit of a FrankenMac: Originally a G4/350 with AGP, upgraded with a Sonnet 1GHz G4 processor card, 1.12GB RAM, a 160GB HDD, an nVidia GeForce3 64MB AGP video card, Samsung DVD/CR-RW drive (Patchburn3) and a Belkin PCI card with 2 additional Firewire ports and 3 additional USB 2.0 ports. When I performed the upgrade, I had the keyboard and mouse plugged into the case USB 1.1 ports, a Logitech Notebook Pro USB camera plugged into the other case USB 1.1 port, and a D-Link BT120 USB->BT adapter plugged into one of the three USB 2.0 ports on the Belkin PCI card.
When I check the Console logs after the rebooting, I see a kernal panic in the panic.log. Apple has received this a number of times from me in the past week as I keep sending them 'talkback' logs after the fact.
I also see an error in the system.log which may reveal what is going on:

I suspect the problem where the USB devices are started, because I had that Bluetooth adapter plugged in at the time of the upgrade. I'm speaking of the lines in the log which start with 'USBF'. The keyboard and mouse are useless when the black screen shows up after waking from sleep.
I've tried some of the suggestions I've found for the iBook 'wake from sleep' postings on macfixit.com and here - resetting NVRAM and removing a few of the .plist files. This didn't seem to help.
I would greatly appreciate help in resolving this issue. I've been a Mac owner since the original Macintosh (it's still in my house) and am frustrated that this is the first problem I've encountered.
Thanks in advance for your help.Thanks. In fact I had bought a new keyboard and mouse (Macally) and sure enough, if I unplug it before it reboots, the CD drive door stays closed and I can boot from a CD! I did not try any of the other stuff. Is there any way to get it to stop this? Why does a USB peripheral cause the CD to eject anyway? Would love to know!

IBook G4 temporarily unresponsive when waking from sleep on AC power
Hi,
I've noticed that my iBook G4 (late 2004) is temporarily unresponsive when waking from sleep, after having slept and been awoken on AC power (with the battery removed). The computer wakes up, but does not respond to trackpad or keyboard inputs for a non-trivial amount of time (30 seconds or so). There are no problems when sleeping and waking with the battery plugged in. I remove the battery to try to maintain it at a constant 40% load to conserve battery capacity. I am running Mac OS X 10.4.6.
Does anyone have a clue what could be causing this weird behaviour? And yes... everything is normal at wake-up.
The only other thing I'll add is that the iBook battery replaces the traditional on-board battery found in all Macs used to retain several key settings when a system is unplugged. Things like system time for example. I can only venture a guess that some key setting is being recalculated on wake-up from a no-battery sleep, and the process that reads keyboard input is frozen until that setting is restored. -
Hi
My Macbook Pro 15 inch takes several minutes to be able to connect to the internet after waking from sleep. Does anyone else have this problem and is there a fix?

The message that comes up when I click on "TomTom Home Install" is "You cannot open Home Install because Power PC applications are no longer supported." Does this mean that the TomTom, which is absolutely vital to my life - well, not literally but you know what I mean - can no longer be used with my MacBook Pro?
What that means is that is can't be used with Lion 10.7. PowerPC was the chip Apple used up until 2006 when they switched to Intel. At that point, they created the Rosetta emulator to allow for PPC support for 5 years. They finally dropped the support with the release of Lion. It will only work with OS X 10.6 or earlier. The other option is to purchase a new GPS, which can be had for $100 for a decent one. -
Network connection after waking from sleep
Hi... More or less any time I allow my MacBook Pro to go to sleep, when I wake it up I am nearly always disconnected from my Airport connection (I connect to a NetGear wireless router via my internal Airport card). I go up to the menu bar and click on the now grey airport icon and I do still see my network in the list of available networks. I click on it, after several seconds a message comes up that says "there was an error joining the Airport network "network name""... But I then simply click on OK (rather than Try Again, I've learned that by trial and error) and the network reconnects just fine... Then when I let the machine sleep again at some later time, I do that all again... Any suggestions of what might be going on??? I do have "Use Interference Robustness" turned on (not that I know why exactly) but I've also had it off before and that seems not to matter... Any suggestions??? thanks... bob..
FW800 G4 dual 1.25 Ghz and 17 inch MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.8)I have "join preferred networks" selected, and mine os the only one on the list, and it still does not connect after waking from sleep. It is WEP security, not WPA2. I checked out the following article, but it was of no help:
