MBP very hot

Serial W86233
First, I should say this is my first laptop so I really have nothing to compare it to BUT It does get really hot. How do I know what too hot is? Is this a warranty issue that Apple will support?

You can download a temp monitor to see the temps on your HD, core 1 and core 2. Here is a link http://www.bresink.de/osx/TemperatureMonitor.html
Also you can download the Hardware monitor too, you only have those 3 sensors anyway so it doesn't matter. The average is somewhere around 60C give or take 10 or so degrees. It can vary greatly though, I can run from 28C to 65C in a few minutes. As long as your under a 100 your ok, they do run hot anyway.

  • Sleep makes MBP very hot.

    10.4.11
Most times, it seems, when the MBP is put to sleep, it is very hot when I pick it up, later. anyone else experiencing this?

This has happened to me a couple of times too. According to my IStat widget, it's the CPU and CPU heat sink which are hot. The explanations in other replies that talk about some process hanging up seem the most logical. Another indicator is that upon wake-up from this scenario, a shutdown takes an unusually long time. Unfortunately when I came upon my computer in this state, I didn't think to run the IStat widget which would have told me what the CPU was doing.
Though this may be wrong (more learned advice welcome), I take some comfort in the fact that the temperatures, though hot, were within ranges told to me by folks on this same discussion forum as being tolerable -- roughly 60-70 degrees centigrade.

  • MBP very hot after firmware 1.5 update

    Hi.
Anybody else had this issue ?
I think it started after i updated the firmware on my MBP 2.4Ghz to v1.5
Now idle temp is around 62c all the time and the fans starts to run very fast
    only with little activity.
I did check if anything was running the CPU 100% "Activity manager"
Nothing. CPU 3% with 5 apps running. And i also ran the Diagnostic disc (AHT)
Before the 1.5 update i never heard the fans really but now they starts
a lot more often and that means the heat went up (Ofcause)
Anything to do ? I want it back to the old behavior much more quiet and nice.
Not to speak about in the long run. It will last longer that way i´m sure.
Would love to hear if anybody have some ideas.

Crazy. All this started after a stupid firmware update. I mean. How stupid is that.
My MBP 2.4Ghz was clean silence and not this hot. Its from Feb 2008.
After the 1.5 firmware it got hotter for sure.
Mine is lifted 10cm over the table and still very hot idle.
    CPU temp 62c
    CPU core 1 & 2 is 63c-64c
And this is only idle ! before it was a lot cooler.
I remember i never heard the fans and thats why i found out something was wrong.
Now i hear the fans with only small things like browsing with safari and burn a DVD.
    Check here.

My model should be between 45c - 52c that would be more normal for my 2.4ghz model.
Could i go to Apple and get a new computer with this issue ? would that be enough ?

  • MBP very hot and now battery is fried ?

To all the MBP experts out there......maybe you can help ?
    1. My MBP (46 months old) has been running VERY hot........that is, if you use it while putting it on your lap (bare skin contact), you'll get burned after a short while.
    2. My battery (only 1 year old, 170 cycles) is dying, and the MBP switches itself to sleep mode when the charge reaches about 40-50%. From full charge, it only takes about 30 minutes to reach 40-50%.
Here's the tricky one.......Coconut battery could say that max capacity is 55% one day, and 80% another day, and then 35% another day..........what's with the variability ??
    Help...........I'm confused.........time to get a new MBP ?

Since your Mac is fairly old, nearly 4 years, it is more then likely clogged with dust in the fan intake and exhaust area.
First thing to do is clean the dust out.
Second thing to do is take it to and Apple Genius Bar or AASP and have it checked for the Bad NVidia Graphic chip as your model is one of these.

    Good Luck.

  • SMC update MBP very hot

I updated the 1.3 SMC firmware for more than a week and notice it getting really hot. For some reason in system profiler it says 1.27. That's not the problem I just want to know if there is a way to rev up the fan speed?

Do you have a utility to read the actual temps? Sometimes what "feels hot" to us is within specs for an intel laptop. I like this Dashboard utility for temps:

  • MBP not waking from sleep and getting very hot

When my Mac Book Pro 15 inch is left for a period of time greater than approximately an hour and plugged in it should automatically go into sleep/hibernate mode. Something happens during this period but I can hear the fan running heavily, the MBP is very hot and I can do nothing to wake it. The only option I have found is to hold the power button down for a few seconds to power the unit off then back on. When the MBP restarts I am greeted with the message "The computer was restarted after Mac OX X quit unexpectedly". I have also seen many kernel panics occurr on a regular basis. This is a new Mac Book Pro and was recently sent back to Apple for diagnosis. I was told it was my third party memory but upon instaling my original Mac memory the problem is STILL present.
Anyone else seeing or heard of this type of behavior???

Hi, I am having the sleep problem with my 17" MBP. When I shut the lid down and it goes to sleep mode for short periods it is ok but any period for longer than 1 hr it will not wake when I lift the lid or press any keys on the keypad. It was also turning itself on and going into sleep mode when I left it to charge overnight from a turned off state untill I sent it for repair. Now it just has the sleep problem, what I have noticed is that it does not play up when I start it up in Safe mode. I have just done the hardware test from the install disc and there were no problems, then I did the archive/Install bit and that did not solve it either. Ah well back on the phone tomorrow unless someone can shed any light!

  • MBP - feel very hot on keyboard

    MBP -
the surface temperature of key board plane is very hot ( 107F ) when in normal operation without plug in the charger. Is it normal ???

The temperatures that your MBP will generate are a function of the number and types of applications in use.  Until that is information is provided, no valid advice can be afforded you.
If you want to pursue this, download and install iStat menus:
    http://bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/
Open Activity Monitor to ALL PROCESSES and set CPU to display values from high to low.
When you believe that your MBP is 'hot', take screen shots of both and post the images for inspection.
    Ciao.

  • Very hot MBP 2.4

I just bought a MacBook Pro 15" 2.4 which is a lovely laptop.
However it gets very hot. I understand that it is normal to get extremely hot between the keyboard and the display. I have no problem with that.
The problem is that my MBP also gets very hot to the left of the mouse pad (even when it's not doing anything, with 98% idle time).
    Is that really normal??

That ST9160823AS hard disk is the optional 7200 RPM 160GB drive, and it does tend to run a bit hotter than the 5400 RPM and 4200 RPM 2.5" disks. The left side of the notebook closest to the operator is where the hard drive is located internally. I think what you're noticing is entirely normal.
If you want to feel hot, try running Handbrake and ripping a few DVDs and touch the metal between the keyboard and the display. My Fluke digital surface temp probe was saying 140 degrees F (60 deg C). Playing World of Warcraft with all the graphics options cranked up at 1440x900 resolution made the entire top and bottom of the MPB hot to the touch, though it ran beautifully.

MBP's just run vicious hot. i have woken up too many nights with mine burning my crotch. has to be some long term effects from that... you need to just manage the problem by keeping it raised on a cooling platform. i have gone as far as filling a ziplock baggie with crushed ice, and running the machine on the ice pack. best to be sure there is air that can pass below the machine when operating.

  • Brand new MBP 13inch VERY HOT

So i bought my new MBP 13inch about a month ago and ive noticed that it is slower than my old macbook (black 2007 model) dispite haveing double the ram and a better processor. Also I have noticed that it has become very hot. It starts after about 15minutes of use and it stays very hot. I can not have it on my lap.
Ive gone to the genius bar once for both of these problems and was told that everything is fine, but I cannot accept that since it is slower and so much hotter than my old macbook. I think this specific laptop may be a lemon.
Anyone know if these problems are normal?

.....Another thing that happened. Today i was watching youtube videos on my MBP and the screen would go to black, I thought the computer went to sleep but it was completely unresponsive. After a few attempts at trying to get it to wake up(with no luck) I decided to kill the power. After waiting a minute with the computer being off i just hit the power button again and the computer would start up and begin loading, but after a few seconds it would die again. I went through this process 4-5 times before it would fully load......
Sounds like the logic board may already be in its death throes.....if LB does die soon, then insist on a replacement MBP; the logic board IS a weak point on MBPs and LB failure is not uncommon.
Welcome to the world of declining MBP quality and reliability...."sigh".
Anyway, as I've said, time and again, anyone who purchases a new MBP should definitely purchase an AppleCare extended warranty before the one year warranty runs out.
A MBP owner without it is just playing Russian roulette.

  • Play Simcity 2000 in boxer, MBP become very hot

    Hi mac people,
last time downloaded boxer and simcity 2000 cd collection, i never change any setting and the game setting leave it as default, but then my mac become very hot near the charging part( like super hot!!!), so I go setting and have check, the cpu speed is tuned at max, and my mac activity monitor showed 8 core is running almost at max!!!!(I only opening this app!),
Does everyone know how to change the setting for boxer and simcity 2000?
Because of this, my mac logic board is burn and change one in the warranty period because of this(BUT THE TRUE IS, I changed totally three logic board near the end of the warranty period!! make me buy a apple care which cost me to spend more hard earn money!)
Does you all have the same problem, or only me?

Use a Windows 3D gaming tower to play games, it's why they mod them with elaborate cooling.
Windows operating system versions get a decade of support on average, you can open them up and clean the dust out and you can upgrade the video card.
The Mac strikes out in all three, you only killing the expensive Mac prematurely.

  • The case of my 7 month old mbp has started to get very hot within minutes of switching it on. Is this normal and is there anything I can do?hing

The case of my 7 month old mpb has started to get very hot within 2 or 3 minutes of switching it on. Is this normal and is there anything I can do?

The heat generated by the system is directly related to the load put on the system and the speed of the fans.
The former (high CPU load) generates heat, the latter (fan speed) dissipates it.
If your machine is getting hot then either some process is consuming lots of CPU power, causing more heat to be generated, or your fans are not working properly to dissipate whatever heat is being generated.
So the first question is whether your fans speeds kick into high gear or not? if they don't then it could indicate a hardware problem, either with broken fans, or with broken temperature sensors that control the fan speed.
If the fans do come on but the system is still getting hot then I'd look for a software issue - some process that's running rampant. It should be easy to spot with something like /Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor. There should be a lot of processes listed, but most should use just a few percentage points of CPU power. If any process is using a lot of CPU power then it warrants some investigation - what is that process? should it be running? Is it failing in some way. Post the results of your Activity Montor report and I'm sure someone can chime in.

my power adapter gets very hot to toutch on my mac book pro is this normal

Hot is normal for the charger but very hot is not. If it were mine It could be that your MBP is drawing too much current. I would take it to the Apple Store and have it checked out.

  • The power adapter gets very hot.  Any suggestions?

The power adapter part that plugs into the computer gets very hot.  I have replaced the battery and replaced the power adapter.  It also has a hard time connecting and recharging the battery.  Is it possible to change out the plug in part in the computer and is it expensive?  Does it sound like this is what is needed to fix it?  Its about 3 years old.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks.

lately above the keyboard along back edge in the middle under monitor gets very hot almost to hot to touch, uncomfortable on lap.
i have no idea what the memory cards are. some have suggested i should replace memory cards?

I don't really know about the new models as far as typical operating temperatures. The ones you mention are not meaningfully high to me. My 2011 13" MBP with an i5 CPU typically idles near 50º C.
As for the speed issue that is hard to evaluate on the basis of personal opinion. You can download and run GeekBench benchmarks and compare the results to those reported for the same model configuration. You can use CineBench to benchmark video performance.
