MBP water damage repairs - Apple store or other?

Hi,
A small water spill has left several of my keyboard keys not working.
I've backed up etc and am ready to get repaired, but from what I've read it's going to be expensive if done in an Apple store.
Is it worth considering a cheaper independent laptop repair shop?
Thanks in advance,
Matt

  • I just restored my 13" MBP i5 at the apple store to the newest version of Lion after issues with a previous Time Machine backup from Snow Leopard- this time I created a new account and just ported files and folders, and now MS Office doesn't work. Help?

I just restored my 13" MBP i5 at the apple store to the newest version of Lion after issues with a previous Time Machine backup from Snow Leopard- this time I created a new account and just ported files and folders, and now MS Office doesn't work.
^^ that's the main problem. Here's the full history.
I bought a new 13" i5 MBP, early 2011 edition. I had an old white Macbook 2.14 ghz core2duo on Snow Leopard. I attempted to port over my time machine backup, but encountered problems in that my User was inaccessible from the new computer after the import finished, and I had to go in and change the root password, etc, and for some reason or another, I couldn't install any programs at all from that administrator's account. By "couldn't" I mean I could install them, but upon installation they would never boot. So, I took it to the apple store and did a clean install from the most up to date Lion OSX. Then, I created a brand new admin account, instead of trying to import the old one, and things seemed great. Then, I just imported my old files from the TM backup, but not any system settings, permissions, or user data. Just my Docs, pics, vids, apps, and itunes stuff.
Here's where things get weird again. I imported this stuff under the name "old", but all of these folders have a red negative sign on them, marking them as restricted. So, from my main admin account, I cannot even peruse these folders. Since I didn't import user data, I can't sign in to the "old" account to change permissions. I already tried to change the permissions from system preferences, but that didn't change anything. And now, for whatever reason, of all the apps that were imported then, MS Office is the only set of apps that does not work. When I click on it, it just says there was a problem and asks if I'd like to send a report to apple. I tried reinstalling it to no avail. I'm an English student, so i really need access to Word. Can anyone help? The Apple store is a major detour for me and would like to fix this issue myself.

Most likely you have Office 2004 which are PPC-only applications and will not work in Lion. Upgrade to Office 2011. Other alternatives are:
Apple's iWork suite (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.)
Open Office (Office 2007-like suite compatible with OS X.)
    NeoOffice (similar to Open Office.)
LibreOffice (a new direction for the Open Office suite.)

Sorry, it appears you were scammed. The phone you have was replaced, either under warranty, or as an out of warranty replacement, & should have been returned to Apple. Unfortunately, some unscrupulous retailers will fix these phones, & then re-sell them. Your only option is to go back to whoever you purchased the phone from & confront them

  • How does the Water damage repair work in canada Quebec?

Hi guys, some months ago my Ipod touch 32g (fourth generation) fell on the toilet seat, and it got water damaged, its dead and passed out. I took a rendez-vous at the nearest apple store near my house for sathurday so i fix it, but I want to know what will they tell me, what is the price, and is there any other way repairing it. Also, its been more than 1 year ive bought my ipod touch so the warranty of 1 year is over. Also, some friend of mine told me that apple waranty says it is 1 year, but it is 2 years, and it was recently sued because of it, I would like to know if it was a myth or it was truth, because if it is true, my warranty might not be over. Thank you for responding to the thread.

  • Should I have water damage repaired?

So I went to the apple store to ask them something about my iphone, and the guy said it has water damage on the top sensor , but not the bottom. However, my phone works fine, and he even said the battery and everything seems to be running normally. My question is this... should I get it repaired? I found a website that fixes water damage for $40, but my phone is running fine, battery and all... so should I bother?

    Why would you do anything?
If the "water damage" is not causing issues, leave it alone.
If you allow anyone other than Apple to open/repair/replace the device, you void any possible warranty.
Is it worth $40 to repair supposed water damage and lose any potential warranty you might have?

  • Making knuckle cracking noises after repair, Apple Store said it's "normal"

I sent my MacBook Air mid 2011, the first time, to an Apple Store because it failed Verify Disk and was unable to re-install OS X (Repair No.: R88048332). When I got it back and found strange knuckle cracking noises whenever I held it and moved around.  I further found a few screws on the lower case were not tightened. And with a little pressure with my thumb and pointer finger, I could see the lower case near the touch pad went closer to the upper case.  When I held the MBA with my right hand near the hinge and the power on key, I could hear clearly multiple knuckle cracking noises.  I went back to the Apple Store, and the technician said it was normal because it's re-opened after factory assembly.  Eventually they re-screwed the lower case but no improvement was made.
Has the case been bended or damaged?  It's still under AppleCare so what can I do?

Yes, it's an Apple Store in Sydney, Australia.
I brought the MBA to another Apple Store and a guy there found the loudspeaker on the left side could not be aligned properly and there were other things inside to be re-aligned.  He also pointed out a dented corner on the keyboard side upper-left corner (not the lower side) and a few punched edges near the ports on both side and a number of scratch marks on the top (Apple Logo) and the bottom.  They were all new and not found when I took the MBA to the Genius Bar two days ago.  (Before giving the MBA to Apple Store, there was no scratches or damage as inspected on the spot.)
I thought my MBA had been dropped to a hardground at the first repair service in the Apple Store. I could not think of anything otherwise.
b.t.w. It was initially a non-recoverable Verify Disk problem as reported by the Disk Utility 10.8.3 and the SSD could not re-install OS X either. That's the reason of my first visit to Apple Store.  When I took it back, I found that I could not make the Recovery Disk USB and by Option restart, I found no Recovery Volume. That's why I took the MBA back to the Apple Store and asked them to re-install OS X properly.  Over there, I also showed them the click and crack noise.  The tecnician said he was very sure that my Time Machine backup was corrupted and thus during the restoration, the corrupted TM backup erased the Recovery Volume!  (I don't believe it.) I took out the TM backup external HDD and immediately inspected it with Disk Utility, there was no problem.  And later I restored the same TM backup to the MBA with no problem, and the Recovery Volume was there.  I don't know why Apple Store opened the MBA's case when it was only an OS issue.  and I cannot understand why a software issue will make my MBA's alumnium case clicks and cracks forever with dents and scratches everywhere!

  • I'm buying a MBP from a non apple store, do I still have the same "one year limited warranty"? And is it international or not?

I live in Turkey and my father is bying me a Macbook pro from Dubai's airport, and I was wondering if I would still have the same "one year limited warranty" as if I bought it from an apple store in Turkey, and is the one year limited warranty international or not?
So can I return, replace or repaire the laptop in Turkey

If the seller is an Authorized Apple Service Provider, then yes.  Otherwise I do not know.
I do not see Dubai listed:

The Apple warranty is world wide.
    Ciao.

  • Retina MBP making fan noise - Apple store unwilling to help

    Hi All,
Any adivice would be appreciated with my problem.  So I got a Retina MBP when it first came out and noticed it had a ding so I took it to the Apple store and exchanged it - no questions asked.  The newer unit they gave me, which I currently have is making a very odd fan noise.  It is faint but apperent when working in quite enviroments like at my office.  Its really annoying.  I took it to the Apple store recently and explained the situation and told them that the original unit i had didn't have this problem at all so I know its not the typical fan noise.  They maxed out the CPU, RAM, etc. and said they couldnt' here it and as such, are unable to replace my unit.  I told them that I do not do that much intensive work on it and only can here it when its quite - they probably wouldn't here it in the loud store.
As a result, I have now recorded the faint sound coming from the fans but I don't know what the best approach is to have the just replace my unit.  Should I take it back to the apple store with the recording?  Should I just call apple care?  Apple is getting worse and worse in my opinion with customer service.  I remember a time where, if i was unsatisfied with their product, they would exchange it no matter what.

    Hi,
Yeah Apple solved it.  I called Apple Customer Support, not "Applecare" and the person was very helpful.  I told them that i recorded the noise - it was in my downloads folder.  The person set it up so I could mail in the laptop through an Apple store and they replaced the fan.  I was without a laptop for like a week though.
    Hope that helps.

  • Previous gen MBPs still available in Apple stores?

I'm planning on buying a previous gen MacBook Pro this weekend. I just noticed on the online store that the clearance section disappeared today. Does anyone know if the Apple stores still have previous gen MacBook Pros in stock? (I'll call my local store before heading over there). Otherwise I'll start looking round on the other independent online stores to find what I'm looking for.
    Thanks!

Some Best Buy stores still have the old ones. Might want to think about a refurb on Apple's site. Just bought one for $1349 and looks as good as new.
They have multiple gens online.. check to make sure that it has the multitouch pad, that indicates the latest last design.

  • I went to an Apple store the other day...

I went to the Apple store in Buffalo. I am planning to make the switch, via a MacBook, but I am scared about the discoloration, even if it is rare. I asked a woman what Apple would do about it. She said that if it gets dirty, it's because it's been used. I don't think she really knew what I was talking about. Is this because she's stupid, the problem is just really rare, or because Apple has instructed their store people to keep mum on the issue? I'm sorry if this has been said many times, but I don't want to buy a MacBook if there's a possibility that it will get stained in a week and Apple will spit in my face.

I think you nailed it there.
I don't think you have to worry about the discoloration problem now. Apple has changed the plastics. I would order one though so you get the latest build.

  • IPhone 5 suffered heavy water damage, just started functioning regularly-- Need help!

So last July my iPhone 5 experience severe water damage. Apple store employees said that there was little they could do. The phone would not function
Fast forward to 6 months later: I hook up the phone to the wall outlet and the black screen shows up with rows and rows of white text. I can hook it up to iTunes but it can't restore.
Fast forward to today (a year later): I plugged my phone into the wall outlet and hooked it up to iTunes. The phone successfully was updated and restored. It now seems to function normally. I'm considering calling my carrier to switch back to my iPhone 5, however I'm not sure if it will fail on my later because there was extensive water damage before. What are your guys' thoughts?

however I'm not sure if it will fail on my later because there was extensive water damage before. What are your guys' thoughts?
It will fail at some point or start acting in a strange manner. And such failure will occur at the time you need the device the most according to my friend Murphy. When the device was water damaged you could have gotten an out of warranty replacement for less than the price of a new phone. In fact you may still be able to get such a replacement. Check with the local Apple store.

  • Are 2.33ghz MBPs C2D still being sold in Apple stores???

Im looking for a 2.33ghz MBP and wondering if apple stores still carry them. And if so how much? Thanx

Nop.. Refurb and re-fresh is very different.
    Refurb
Generally stock which has been purchased by a customer, but later returned due to a fault, or become DOA (dead on arrival).. Often, the Apple reseller will just give the customer a replacement, since the fault is due to poor q&a, manufacturing or malfunction.
This faulty system will be returned to Apple for some TLC. Because we have laws, repaired systems can't be sold as new items, therefore they must be sold as a refurb, and customers must be aware they are buying a refurbished system.
    Re-fresh
    - a term which is used by Apple only
When a customer returns a new product to the store, because he/she changed their minds, and the item has been opened, used or tested - no longer sealed.
Retail Laws states items which were sold "New" can't be resold "as New"... Those items are not refurbs or refurbished stock, since they don't have a fault. They simply been sold to one customer before and they're been returned for one reason or another.

  • I have a fully functioning iPhone 4S that has been in water, it has left slight water marks on screen, everything else works and is in mint condition. I want to exchange it for an iphone 5s and pay the difference. Would this be possible at the apple store

I have a fully functioning iPhone 4S in mint condition apart some water marks on screen (dropped in bath) everything works perfectly as it should. I wish to exchange and pay the difference for an iphone 5s. Is this possible from the apple store (uk) how much do they normally give as a trade in and how much do they charge for an iphone 5s. Or should I just take it in and see if they will do a one for one swap and pay the difference. ( I don't like the water marks, it's annoying, maybe they will go away, I don't know) been sat in rice for a week.

The only thing Apple will do for you is an out of warranty exchange, & you will get EXACTLY what you have now. The cost will be US $199. Make an appointment at any Apple store.
