MBP wifi "connection timeout" issue

My 2010 macbook pro has trouble connecting to many wifi networks.  It works fine connecting to my network at home, but any sort of public wifi or hotel or friend's network is likely to give it trouble.
I get the "connection timeout" issue, and I know that I'm not the only one, but I didn't manage to find anything that worked from scouring this forum.  Just to delinate the issue: all my other devices (iPad, iPhone, other laptops) connect fine to wifi networks in exactly the same places.  I managed to find a workaround by getting a cheap wifi dongle that connects fine in precisely the same places that the MBP's built-in antenna does not.  Is there any way to fix this, or am I just stuck dongling it up?

Try going into Network Preferences > Wi-Fi > Advanced. Click the network you're trying to join and click the minus button. This forces your mac to forget any saved credentials associated with that network and it will try to make a fresh connection. You can also try Network Preferences > Assist me... > Diagnostics to give you some more troubleshooting suggestions. It will probably tell you to restart your router/modem which sometimes works but you're usually not allowed to do to this to a public wifi hotspot.
It's also possible that your AirPort Extreme card, which is the part your mac uses to connect to wifi, is failing. Since 2010's are no longer under warranty, you can look up the iFixit guides to see if you're feeling adventurous enough to replace it yourself (if it is replaceable).

  • Wifi connectivity timeout

    Hi All,
I have mac book Air 2012 with following OS
    OS X 10.8.2 (12C3006)
Recently My Wifi connection droped time to time at Office. But now i can not connect to Wifi at all.Its giving connection timeout issue most of the time. But my home wifi connection working fine.
Others can connect to wifi without any issue at Office. But they are using other Brands not Apple.
Please help me to solve this issue.

@semperfiguy:  Do trial and error.  Your functions are utilized as widgets.  I have many home-made and borrowed functions and have no problem.  First, test your settings with the default rc.lua and tell us if something is still wrong.  Are all your modules up to date?  Nvidia drivers/kernel? (Sorry but NOT everybody does this .
Also, what kind of machine/arch (32-bit/64-bit) are you running?  I use 64 bit amd with 64 bit archlinux and an nvidia card.
Lastly, if it's not any trouble, try trial and error on widgets and notifications, using lua comments to comment your widgets out and keep adding them back.  I suggest you change your volume hook for example.  Your hooks load rather quickly.  I would do Gmail notification every 5 minutes or so and my volume hook updates every 10 seconds but getVol is displayed as soon as I mouse over to change the volume.  Instead,  If you are using a tray, you can replace naughty notification with Noteo, highly recommended.  I do not suggest checking gpu temp so often with nvidia-settings.  Do you have powermizer and thermal monitor on in nvidia-settings?
Use lua style comments to comment all custom widgets out then gradually add them again, noticing any difference while we look over your rc.lua/functions.lua.  Also, load the same background processes and try using a different WM to see if the same thing occurs.  Hope to hear back.  I don't see anything wrong in functions.lua.

  • New MBP wifi connectivity issues

Recently bought a new MBP about 2-3 months ago and I've noticed almost the entire time I've had it I have always had issues with the wifi constantly timing itself out. I know for a fact that this is not related to my router or ISP as I have other computers on the same network that don't run into these issues. This computer has also been tested with the same results on other wifi connections. I am currently using OS X 10.8.2 on a 15in, mid 2012 model. This issue is very frustrating. I notice this issue during everything I do from Online computer games (WoW) where the connection will just drop to basic web page browsing such as navagating to this page which was a task in itself. I constantly have to turn the wifi off and back on again to refresh the connection and to load web pages.

    Same problem, no solution yet!

  • Late 2013 15" Retina Macbook Pro - wifi connection timeout with one router

    Hi,
I've recently purchased a new Macbook Pro retina 15 inch late 2013 model. Everything is fine at home, but at work I cannot connect to one wireless router (Netgear WAG102). The computer tries to connect but I get a connection timeout error after a few seconds for every attempt.
I have tried every suggestion for wifi issues that I can find on the forums, and have reset the router.
A colleague has also recently purchased the same computer except 13 inch model - he has exactly the same problem.
Any suggestions? I suspect given that two of us have the same problem that there is an incompatibility with the MBP and this particular router. I notice that there are quite a few discussions about similar issues with the macbook pro.

I too have a MBP Retina, 15", late 2013, and am having wifi connection issues.  I've tried several fixes suggested on these discussions and by Apple.  Nothing corrects the problem.  I've been told it's my router, but I find that difficult to believe give that my wife has a MBP 13" 2012 (non retina), that has no issues at all, nor do our iPhones.  It's just my MBP Retina.
My issue seems to be when waking from sleep, I lose the wifi connection.  I have to turn wifi of then on again, and it reconnects.  The only thing that corrects the problem for me is when I disable bluetooth.  I have the magic mouse and it's basically useless becuase I need bluetooth on for it to work.
I find this to be an annoying problem.  This is my first MacBook, and I really like it, but this wifi thing is bad.  Never had this problem with my Windows machines.

  • Connection timeout issues

Hi, I recently updated my 2011 MBP to the latest version 10.8.4 and ever since, I am unable to hold onto a wifi signal. I am continually getting 'connection timeout'
It works perfectly when wired via ethernet.
    This is driving me crazy!
Any ideas on how to fix this issue?
It worked perfectly before the update!
    Thanks

Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried, until the problem is resolved. Some of these steps are only possible if you have control over the wrieless router.
    Step 1
Restart the router and the computer. Many problems are solved that way.
    Step 2
Change the name of the wireless network, if applicable, to eliminate any characters other than letters and digits. You do that on your router via its web page, if it's not an Apple device, or via AirPort Utility, if it is an Apple device.
    Step 3
    Run the Network Diagnostics assistant.
    Step 4
In OS X 10.8.4 or later, run Wireless Diagnostics and fix the issues listed in the Summary, if any.
    Step 5
    Back up all data.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
Enter the name of your wireless network in the search box. You should have one or more "AirPort network password" items with that name. Make a note of the name and password, then delete all the items. Quit Keychain Access. Turn Wi-Fi off and then back on. Reconnect to the network.
    Step 6
You may need to change other settings on the router. See the guidelines linked below:
Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    Potential sources of interference
    Step 7
Make a note of all your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane, then delete the connection from the connection list and recreate it with the same settings. You do this by clicking the plus-sign icon below the connection list, and selecting Wi-Fi as the interface in the sheet that opens. Select Join other network from the Network Name menu, then select your network. Enter the password when prompted and save it in the keychain.
    Step 8
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).

  • A1000 Wifi connection stability issue

I just received this A1000F tablet on last Friday. The wifi connection randomly stops responding, while the notification bar show it as connected. When it occurs, router activity panel reports it as inactive. Switching wifi ON/OFF on the tablet restores the connection for a random limited time. I tried many Wifi authentication setups without sucess. My other devices as Airport Express, Acer Laptop and Sony Xperia U work flawlessy with connection staying up for days without any simmilar issue. Device has been updated to latest available upgrade (Settings > About Device > System upgrade)
    Kind regards

  • Connection timeout issues with Time Capsule

I have a first generation 500 GB Time Capsule, with AT&T Uverse internet service.  The device worked fine up until 3 weeks ago, at which time I received a "connection timeout" error when trying to connect from any of the computers in the house.  At that time, the computers were showing that the wireless network was available, but I was just unable to connect.  I could connect to the device using the ethernet connection, and the wired computer would still successfully backup.
I restarted the Time Capsule, and everything immediately returned to normal.  Everything worked fine for about a week, and then the problem occurred again.  The issue has been occurring more and more frequently, to the point that it now is only working for several hours before requiring a reset.
Has anybody experienced anything similar to this?  Any thoughts on a solution to this?

Hi I had similar problems. I moved houses got my own cable modem and tried to use the TC as my wireless, as i had it in my other home. The connection would drop constantly and i was unable to use the TC as a wireless device, it would also freeze my computer (mac book Pro). After asking everyone for help i found that when i moved the TC next to the cable modem in the garage it all worked. Apparently the ethernet cable that ran from the garage to the living room was only using 4 of the 8 pins and thus was dropping the connection. i am now connected directly from the modem to the tc and it has not failed yet (cross my fingers). After all this was suppose to be wireless and thus i don't need to have it right next to my computer. The signal is strong and it has not caused any problems. I didn't mess with the settings after i did a hard reset on the TC. So far so good. hopes this helps.

  • Early 2011 MBP Wifi connection issues

I have an early 2011 i7 Macbook Pro (2ghz), and tonight my internet stopped working. Then I noticed my wifi had died.  So I restarted the router.  Didn't fix it.  I then restarted the mac.  My wifi came back.  Then it died again ... and I restarted the router and the mac multiple times.  Then I tested on my iPhone (disabled 3G and just used wifi) and it worked fine.
Been doing some checking online and it looks like my Mac may be broken.  After all my ranting about how great it is!  Anyone got the same issue or a fix?  Or do I once again have to take this machine to the store for another checkup?  Sick of my Apple hardware having problems.  Had 3 iPhone 4's !

    1. Check the cycle count of the battery against the rated life for your model. The battery may be due for replacement. If the power adapter is connected almost all the time, the battery may need replacing even though the cycle count is not too high.
    2. Follow these instructions, or these for OS X 10.8 or earlier.
    3. In the Energy Saver preference pane, uncheck the box marked
Enable Power Nap while on battery power
if it's shown (it may not be.)
    4. You can also try resetting the SMC.
    5. Make sure your system is up to date in Software Update.
    6. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service center.

  • Lenovo Yoga 10 HD+ WIFI connection stability issue

Same problem here but on Lenovo Yoga 10 HD+ 3G:
After a few minutes the connection is gone though the tablet shows its still there at full level. Disabling / Enabling WIFI on the tablet makes it reconnect. On the same router e.g. Lenovo Yoga 8 Wifi Edition, Samsung Galaxy S3 and S3 mini all work fine and do keep the connection. Tested with latest firmware released OTA yesterday.
Also tried the Yoga 10 HD+ on two other WLAN routers where it worked fine.
Any ideas except for buying a new router?
Moderator Note; post moved to start new thread on specific system

I'm having the very same problem. I bought a Lenovo Yoga 10 tablet about a week ago and updated it to 4.4.2 (B8000_A442_001_021_140703_WW_WIFI) yesterday and ever since then, my wifi kicks out when I'm browsing, reading emails, checking twitter etc just all of a sudden and I have to disable and re-enable my Wifi for it to work again (aprox. 5-20 minutes until I have to reconnect again). I've not changed anything in my router settings (Netgear CG3100) since the upgrade and every other computer, tablet and phones that we have in our house runs all fine, it's just the Yoga tablet where I have this issue with. I really hope an update/fix could be pushed as soon as possible since it's unbearable to use it right now and I might just have to return it to the shop in exchange for another tablet, which I don't really want (love the battery life).
Eitherway, I'd be thankful for any help/fix or responds from Lenovo.

  • WiFi Connection timeout error, but still connecting

Since upgrading to Lion I've been having a strange problem. When I connect to a new WiFi hotspot I've been getting an error message suggesting that I have failed to connect, but in reality I have been connected. This happened today at an Apple Store, an office, and when I returned home. It might be related to trying to connect right after waking the computer from sleep, but this never happened with Snow Leopard. Any ideas?

How far do you get in Network Diagnostics? Any difference if you disconnect all other wireless clients?

  • WiFi connection/finding issues with gen 1 touch, everything else works

    Hello everyone.
I am very illiterate when it comes to help which is why I am here. I will give all the info I can, in hopes someone can direct me to the right way.
I recently aquired a older gen 1 ipod touch. (Model MA623C)
It is using Version 2.2.1 (5H11)
when I tried to update it, it told me it was updated.
We use wireless here at the house for our PC, laptop, 3 gen4 ipod touches and an iphone 4S, all of which are working find and on the secured network,.
When I turn on my gen 1 ipod and go to settings, the secured network that everything else is connected to, for the most part doesn't even show up, (under the choose a network) and when it does show up in the list for me to choose from, it only shows 1 bar. I type in my password and it says unable to join.
I am not far away from the main station. I moved to many different places in the house and IF it decided to show up in the list it is just one bar and will not join,
I have turned off the iPod, I have unplugged the router, I have reset the network settings but that is as far as it goes as I have no comprehension of DHCP, BootP or Static or anything about the HTTP proxy being off, manual or auto.
I notice if I look at one of the other ipods it has numbers bu the subnet mask, router, and DNS. I cannot get anything like that to appear on the gen 1 I am working on.
I am good at following directions but again, very illiterate when it comes to this sort of thing.
I am leaving on a plane trip with my son on Thursday morning at 5am, (i would like him to have some use out of this lol)
if there is anyone that can take me under their wing and help me along it would be appreciated.
I work  7am-3pm (central time, Tuesday) with little to no access to this forum until after then, but I will return and see if help has arrived.
    Many TIA
    TRIE

Try restoring the iPod via iTunes. First from backup and then to factory settings/new iPod. See:
iTunes: Backing up, updating, and restoring iOS software
If you want, you can update the iPod to iOS 3.1.3 that you get here. You have to pay for it though.
Purchasing iOS 3.1 Software Update for iPod touch (1st generation)
If still problem you may have a hardware problem like a bad connect to the antenna. You can make an appointment at the genius Bar of an Apple store.
The 1G iPod only use the B and G wifi bands. It will not see N bands.

  • Connection timeout on hotel wifi - only with MacBook8.1 (810.9)  configd plug-in:8.1 (810.9)

I'm having a "Connection Timeout" issue while trying to connect to my hotel's WIFI.
I bought an ex-lease refurbished white MacBook (Build 12E55 - 2.4GHz, the last 2010 model I think) a couple of weeks ago. I bought it so I could use it while on vacation in Bali, Indonesia. I've got OS X 10..8.4 installed.
At home in Australia, this MacBook connected to my home WIFI with absolutely no issues at all.
Now that I'm in Bali, I'm surprised to find that every time I try to connect to the WIFI at the hotel (where I'm staying for a whole month), I get a "Connection Timeout" error. I'm surprised because my iPhone connects to the hotel WIFI with no problem at all, as does our two iPads and the Android phones that belong to other family members. It's only my MacBook that struggles, even though I get even better signal strength indicated on my MacBook compared to my other devices.
I can connect my MacBook to my iPhone hotspot fine, though I'd prefer to use the free hotel WIFI over my very small 3G data allowance.
So the problem isn't that my MacBook can't connect to any WIFI, because it did at home and it still can to my iPhone hotspot.
And the problem isn't with the router, because all other devices work flawlessly.
I've trawled many forums and articles trying to find a solution. Here's everything I've tried already, that I can remember. (Not in this order and not all at once.)
    Rebooted MacBook (duh)
Sitting directly under the WIFI router. (It's not a signal strength issue.)
Set up new Network > Location. Deleted Ethernet and Bluetooth PAN so it's just WIFI in the list.
    Renewed DHCP Lease countless times.
Tried manual TCP/IP variations. It doesn't help that I'm not sure what to put in the IPv4 Address field. I do know the Subnet Mask and Router IP from looking at my iPhone network info.
Tried using my MAC address as the DHCP Client ID. Also tried just using "1" or leaving it blank.
I don't know what an IPv6 is either.
Tried BootP and completely Manual setups but not really sure of the correct settings to try.
Tried using the DNS servers that I found on my iPhone network info for the hotel WIFI. (One of them is 8.8.8.8 which I think is Google's DNS thing?)
Tried checking Auto Proxy Discovery and Use Passive FTP Mode, since it was suggested as part of a solution in a forum thread.
Tried changing the MTU to a couple of other settings from an article I read. I think one was around 1453 and the other was 1494 or something close to that.
    Tried resetting PRAM
    Tried resetting SMC
Tried a variation on resetting SMC that involved pressing down the normal keys plus one extra, for 10 secs, since it worked for someone who was told to do that by an Apple Care person. (He didn't know why it worked and other forum posters thought it was supposed to have been a SMC reset.)
Checked the Network> Wi-Fi in System Information to see if the Channel is compatible. The router uses Channel 1 and my MacBook is capable of using Channel 1.
Checked my country profile. It's X1. I have no idea if that's good. All I know is that I'm in Indonesia not Australia and I'm having WIFI issues with this hotel network.
Checked the PHY Mode. Supported are 802.11 a/b/g/n. The hotel router uses 802.11n.
Made sure I was using WPA2 Personal.
Tried deleting all WIFI-related passwords in Keychain.
Tried deleting all Network-related preference files.
Tried removing all LaunchDaemons and LaunchAgents.
It's not a "lost WIFI connection when waking from sleep" issue but I tried turning off sleep anyway.
My husband even had the nerve to unplug the hotel router (small hotel, we're the only guests at the moment) for 10 minutes hoping it will reboot. But I don't know if that's the actual modem or just a WIFI repeater thing (sorry, can't remember the right terms). It didn't work anyway.
I've run out of options, other than just sucking it up and getting a big 3G data allowance since I'm here for a month.
If there is anything else I can try - perhaps working out how to set up my Network manually properly, please help me out. Here is everything in System Information that might help. I'll happily provide any other info.
