MBP with almost full battery switches off if Magsafe removed.

I have an older MacbookPro (2.16ghz Intel Core, 17") . Its started behaving bizzarely today - with Magsafe connected, its shwoing a green light, and the battery is showing as 91% full, and not charging.
Checking the health settings on System Info shows its in pretty good shape.
The instant i remove the Magsafe connector, the Mac shuts off. No warning, just instant shut off.
I have reset the SMU following apples procedure of removing battery and power, holding power button for 5 secs before reconnecting everything and rebooting.
Nothing seems to have changed - the battery still refuses to charge and the Mac dies if the magsafe is removed.
Any ideas what the problem could be?
or how to cure it?
thanks

thanks, i'll have a look, but i've never noticed an option to prevent charging, or to switch off when magsafe is disconnected.
What do you think i should be looking for?

My iphone 4 has suddenly ceased to operate with a full battery and switch will not display slider.  How can I reactivate it? Is the memory gone? Will T Mobile replace the memory or the phone if necessary?

    Hello,
If you're in a country where there's an apple shop (unfortunately not mine), go check it and ask the employee about it: he's gonna check your Iphone on a "device"
I've got an iphone 5 and it's working very well with me but I have to admit that its battery lasts (slower) than my Ipad 2.
Still i can help with some tips that may improve your iohone's battery by an hour in addition (hopefully):
    - close all apps by multitasking....
    - do NOT keep the brightness to the max
Believe me you're gonna regret changing your phone to a samsung
Hope i've helped and sorry for my bad english (has english as 3rd language)

  • Ipad shuts off and restarts after 3 to 4 minutes even with a full battery.

My Ipad will shut off after 3 to 4 minutes even with a full battery and whether it is being used or not. then it will power up again on its own. This also occurs when the charger is connected and when I have it connected to my computer.

First try to Reset all settings if this does not fix the issue - No data Loss
    Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings
If Not You need to restore the Device - Data Loss
connect your device to Computer and Click on Restore under summary
Reply if you want to know how to save the data if you have decided to restore the device

  • Grey screen with message "turn off computer with power button until switch off then press again power button"

    Dear all,
I'm very hungry with my iMac and my Time Capsule :
I try for two weeks to restore my iMac without any success...
I wait 80 hours to finally have the message again and again : "to restart your computer : turn off computer with power button until switch off then press again power button".
But my iMac do not work !
    Could you help me?

    Hello, that's a kernel panic...
    http://thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X 10.6 Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

  • HT1430 My iphone died suddenly with a full battery and it won't turn back on.

My iPhone 4 died suddenly with a full battery.  I have tried, multiple times, holding the home button and the sleep/wake button at the same time for over 3 minutes.  I have even tried doing that with it plugged in, even though it had a full battery when it stopped working.  Any suggestions on what to try next?

Go through the restoring steps described here:
iPhone, iPad or iPod touch: Not responding or does not turn on
If that doesn't work, try recovery mode as described a little further down in the same article.

  • My MBP 15 inch can't switch off (freeze at blue screen with spinning wheel)

Whenever i try to "shut down" my MBP, it will freeze at the blue screen with the spinning wheel (that keeps spinning like 'eternally')! Any idea how to solve the problem?
I tried booting from the installation disk and repairing disk with "disk utility" but to no avail. Have also tried repairing disk permissions... Any idea how else should i tackle this problem?
Currently i can only switch off my MBP by holding the power button (forcing it to shut down)...
    Please help Thanks!

Launch the Console application by entering the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search, and select "system.log" from the file list. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the times of the log messages referring to boot times. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the time of the most recent boot when you had the problem. Look for error messages in the minutes before that time, and post them here -- the text, please, not a screenshot. Edit out excessive repeats, if any. Do the same with kernel.log.
If the logs don't go back far enough in time, scroll down in the Console file list to /private/var/log/system.log.0.bz2 and /private/var/log/kernel.log.0.bz2. Search those archived logs, and if necessary the older ones below them, for the same information.
Also in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the most recent one, if any. For privacy’s sake, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please do not post shutdownStall or hang logs -- they're very long and not helpful.

  • Whacked out battery switches off to early

My 2nd gen ipod mini has been acting really weird recently. When the battery gets to about a third fill it will just randomly switch off with the low battery icon and message on the screen then when i press the select button it will come on again but will switch off again. This may happen several times but then after about 3 or 4 times resetting it it will start to play like normal and the battery icon will go up again to a third fill and it will play for about another 3 hours then the whole same thing might happen again. where i have to reset it several times to play again.
I have tried restoring but it doesn't do any thing.
I sent my ipod into apple but they sent it back saying that it met all the specifications.
How can this be true there products are so crap, everyone i know has problems with their ipods.
    Can anyone help me.

    - reset, several times
    - update the firmware

  • "Storage Almost Full" icon continuously pops up with almost full available storage on iphone 4. What does this mean?

I've had my Iphone 4 for almost two years. The "Storage Almost Full" icon started to pop up continuously just yesterday, and it hasn't stopped even after deleting almost everything off my phone. It also won't allow me to send messages, or completely clear conversations. And it says "cleaning" on my apps constantly and repeatedly to the same apps. I've tried restarting it, backing it up, restoring it, backing it up again and nothing has worked at all. Is there any way I can get rid of this problem without restoring my phone to it's factory settings and deleting everything? I have a lot of important notes, dates, and contacts that would take a ton of time to put back in, and I want to avoid doing that if I can. Help, please!

I was able to free up 4GB of space by deleting my email account. You can always add your email account again.
This method will delete all saved attachments and data in your iPhone's internal memory.

  • Macbook Pro shuts down with a full battery, resets date

Hey I have a mid 2011 Macbook Pro that has been shutting down randomly. It'll have a  full battery, but shut down when I unplug it or even sometimes when it's still plugged in. Every time I start it up again, the date is changed to Jan. 1 2008 and there's a notification that because it's set to that date, some applications may respond "erratically". It did this for about 2 weeks, then was back to working fine for about a month and now it's started up again.
Today when I turned it back on after it shut down, a notification said to rebuild the iPhoto library. I didn't really know what it meant so I clicked OK because I thought it would help. Instead it erased my entire iPhoto library and shut down again. Thankfully I had my picture backed up!
I have a Genius appointment tomorrow, but was curious if this is happening to anyone else or if anyone has a diagnosis!
    Thanks!

Ok so I took it to the Apple store today and the guy was mildly helpful. He said I'm probably running too many programs at the same time and it's depleting all the power. Kind of ridiculous in my opinion because I feel like MacBooks are built to handle checking your email and editing a picture at the same time. He checked all the systems with disk utility and everything, including the battery, came back in good shape.  Anyway, it worked fine (of course) when I was with him, but the moment I got home it was worse than ever. Now, even when plugged in, it'll only stay on for a few minutes, if that. It won't turn on at all if it's not plugged in. It plays this game where it shuts itself down then turns itself back on then shuts down again over and over. Any ideas? I feel like I'll just have to take it back to the store.

  • 20 month old MBP with only 80% battery capacity

Been noticing my 09 alu uni body 13" MBP now has a battery capacity of just 80%, according to Coconut Battery. I realise this app might not be too accurate, but I only checked it as I've been noticing a reduction in battery life recently.
I've been using MB's for years and employ all the usual good practices, I also regularly recalibrate the battery, although I understand these new non-replaceable models don't require it, nonetheless, it can do no harm.
My question is, is such a reduction in the batteries capacity normal on this machine after just 20 months use?
BTW- The use consists of running on mains at work during working hours, resting over night during the week, use on battery/mains at home at the weekend. According to Coconut the battery has had 348 cycles. Again, no idea how accurate this app is!
I have 3 years cover on the machine, so it it's deemed this is not usual I can pay the Apple store a visit, but I'd be interested in the views of other users whether this is normal or not.
    Thanks.

If you think that's necessary. But losing 20% capacity in almost 2 years is pretty good for any battery. It's just that we can monitor it more accurately now.
You can get your current capacity vs design capacity via Terminal without coconut:
    ioreg -l | grep Capacity
            ^that's a -L and then a |

  • 6310 with CARK-91; Auto Switch Off Possible?

    Hey All
My dad has a BMW with the CARK-91 kit, and used to use a Nokia 6210. When he would turn the car on and off, the phone would follow by switching its power automatically; when switching the ignition off, it would come up with "Phone will power off if not used".
Unfortunately the 6210 broke so he now has a 6310. All works fine, except that it wont switch off; it seems strange that this feature isn't available as the phone will just sit there with its lights on ad infinitum.
Does anyone know if this is available? A guy at Vodafone said it is available with a software upgrade but it seems silly since the older 6210 had it.
    Thanks in advance!

Very odd. 6310 has long been a defunct phone so I cant easily examine its menu (nor can I remember anything usefull)
You might try selecting default factory settings or exploring the menu/manual. More recent phones ( eg 6230) have a menu option to ignore the ignition key. I dont remember that with 6310 but I dont remember a heap of stuff these days.
Upgrading software version should cost you nothing at a service centre (most cities/bigger towns) If you don't have one close then phone one and they will be able to advise you how to check your phones version and if there are any usefull updates available.

  • Iphone 4s..keeps blacking out with an almost full battery

This is driving me mad as I've taken it in to "the geek squad" and they put it on charge and hey presto it works. So far they haven't replaced it but i will be trying again tomorrow. Is anybody else having problems like this?

    Hi Dcp019,
There's a section in this article for power issues like unexpected power off.
    iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2802
If the issue started after a repair however, you may want to check with them about the repair.
    Best regards,
    Nubz
