MBP with battery removed- CPU runs slow?

I'm working on a project today on my MacBook pro with the battery removed.. The battery kind of exploded and warped out of shape which I only noticed last night, luckily apple have a recall program that covers my model of machine so I'll get a free replacement in a couple of days. Anyway, meantime I'm working on a pretty intensive project with a lot of stuff going on in terms of plug ins and instruments etc. Running it in no battery mode with just the power adapter, I'm noticing the CPU bars are pegging pretty hard. I know it's a busy project but I could've sworn it was hardly pipping the CPU's before. Then I remembered reading somewhere that if you use a mac notebook with no battery plugged in the CPU max speed is automatically limited to 1ghz or something.. But I'm not sure if this was some kind of folk tale or actual fact. Anybody have any ideas about this? I don't get my new battery for a couple of days and i'd sort of like to have logic running normally in the meantime if possible...

4 month I was working without the battery in my new MBP, because I thought to preserve it when using the MBP at home. I was so dissapointed with the performance that I thought about selling the MBP again. Just by accident I found a note in a forum saying: if you remove the battery, the tact of the CPU goes down to 1Ghz. I went back home to put the battery back in and I had the power I was expecting. Suddenly all PlugIns were easily handled by the MBP. I was surprised that so few people know about this. So yes: take out the battery and you won't even have half the power (if you have more than 2 GHz).
Cheers!

  • 2011 MBP with 8GB of RAM, generally slow under Lion, possibly thrashing

I have a 17" 2011 MBP with 8GB of RAM and the fastest CPU available at the time.  It came with Snow Leopard, and it was really fast with basically everything I threw at it.
Since the upgrade to Lion, it has a general tendency to get really unresponsive.  My workload hasn't fundamentally changed.  Rather than just hope it's bugs in Lion that will get fixed, I'd like to see if anyone can advise me on things I might investigate, either to fix things myself, or to be more intelligent about identifying bugs I can report.
One thing I notice is that Time Machine backups will bring the system to its knees.  Everything will be going along just fine, and then TM will kick on, and all my apps will stop responding.  Once TM has finished, things will slowly come back to normal.  There's a lot of disk activity, which I have assumed was swapping.  Another thing that causes trouble is that mds (and a whole bunch of mdsworkers) will frequently kick on, and will slow down the system.
CPU load is always quite low, but free memory is always very low.  (However, in some OS's Free Memory is misleading, because a lot of disk blocks are cached in RAM, so it's not really "used" either..)
What I can't really distinguish for sure is if the system is slow because of swapping/thrashing (which is what I assume) or if it's slowed down for some other reason related to disk activity.
Here are the apps I typically run:
    - NetBeans (which is a pig, taking up over 1GB or real memory)
    - Safari (which is also a pig, often taking up more than 1GB between the main Safari process and the Web Content process)
    - Sometimes Parallels (2GB for the VM, and probably another 1GB for other stuff, because it's also a pig)
    - kernel_task typically reports taking up over 1GB of real memory
    - WindowServer also reports using 280MB
    - various other small apps like Mail, NetNewsWire, Preview, Terminal, Adium, Smultron, Colloquy, none of which use much memory
I got the 8GB, because I knew I was going to use a lot of memory for stuff, and it was great under Snow Leopard.  But with Lion, it just doesn't seem to be enough.  Even with all of those huge processes, I can't believe that their working sets are really as big as their virtual and physical memory footprints seem to be.  I mean it's not unusual for a process to have 2GB of virtual space but only a few 100MB of real memory, and some of that is shared object libraries, where the same physical memory is mapped into multiple processes.  (Have shared object libraries stopped being physically shared under Lion?)
Are other people having similar trouble?  Any suggested remedies?  Any suggestions on how to investigate so I can see if there are any actual bugs?
I would like to understand why my system went from zippy to slow after I upgraded to Lion.  Actually, quite a few things have broken.  Time Machine has become a pig, bluetooth doesn't work reliably anymore, airport doesn't connect reliably anymore, and lots of little annoying bugs.  But this is common for early point releases of new OS's, so I can't complain too much.  But for Lion to have really regressed in memory management is definitely not good.

Safari, for what ever reason, has become a huge memory
pig.  The longer you are using it the more memory it
    gobbles up.
In Activity Monitor, check the Page outs and Swapped used.
This will tell you how much memory swapping is going on.
As for Time Machine, you may want to set your Parallels
HD image not to get backed up by Time Machine.  May
help since it is a huge collection of files.  But there have been
issues reported with Time Machine and Lion.  I don't
use it myself and opt for the cloning methodology and
seperate data backup strategy.  Also, in Spotlight
preferences under the Privacy Tab, I have added
my Windows VM folders, for same reason.  Unless you really
need to find something on the windows VM volumes when you
don't have the Windows VM active, it just eats up alot
    of disk access time.
For solving airport issues check this article:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-20117247-263/fixing-airport-problems-in-os- x/?tag=mncol;txt
For Bluetooth devices, try removing them, and have them rediscovered if you
    can.
Hopefully, this gives you a start on cleaning things up.

  • MBP 17" Battery Capacity and Run Times : Survey

I've had 2 MBP 17's so far, and I'd like to get a general idea from everyone about their battery capacity and run times they are experiencing.
My first MBP17 had a Full Charge Capacity of ~5900mAh before calibration and PMU reset, and 6800mAh after. This translated to about 3:40 of run time under light load.
My current MBP17 had a Full Charge Capacity of ~5899mAh before calibration and PMU reset, and 6942mAh after (currently). This translates to about 3:48 of runtime....still trying to get some more real-world run time numbers under different loads.
This proves to me that it is quite critical to calibrate your battery and reset your PMU at least once to ensure that your battery is reporting it's correct capacity. I'd be interested to know what everyone else's batteries are reporting.

  • Macbook Pro fan running constantly and CPU running slow

So, I have a Macbook Pro 2010 2.3 i7 that has started running really slow and the fan is running constantly.
In activity monitor it shows a kernel_task running constantly at around or above 200%.
I have tried all the regular tasks.  PRam reset, SMC reset and nothing seems to fix it.
I have also tried a system reinstall to no avail.
Maybe I'm on the wrong track, but from what I have read, the kernel_task might be trying to slow my CPU down because it thinks it is being overworked?
Maybe the fans are also being activated because it thinks the computer is too hot?
Anyway, if anyone has any idea as to what I can do to figure out what is going on, let me know.  Thanks

  • My i7 sandy bridge with optibay harddrive is running slow in diablo 3 in low setting. Before I can run ultra settings on Starcraft. It lags now even I run log in sc2!!! It gets slower and slower in game that is like slow motion!!! Computer gets hot.

Hi everyone, I been noticing my MacBook pro getting very slow in games like diablo 3 and Starcraft. This MacBook pro was bought a year ago. It is running i7 sandy bridge with a 128 Ssd. I did install optibay with a monetux xt hard drive in it.
It could run ultra setting on Starcraft no problem and is very smooth when I first got it. Lately I got diablo 3, and it gets very slow. I had to change all the graphics setting to low. It is not slow in the beginning, but it gets very slow after a while. It is like slow motion!!! Even when is low, it is still very laggy in game. I tried to repair the disk and clean up the laptop with onyx and still doing the same thing. I even try to reboot when is slow, but same thing after I reboot. I guess the MBP still hot.
Also I am running in lion!

If it's a 13" MBP you don't have the more powerful dedicated graphics and there is nothing you can do but be mad at Apple for deceiving you that the 13" MacBook Pro was capable of extreme graphics.
Only the 15" and 17" have the more powerful dedicated graphics in addition to the CPU graphics.

  • Calibrating with battery removed?

    Quick question.
When you drain the battery for calibration purposes and it eventually dies, it states to leave the laptop alone for five hours or more before plugging the power back in and charging up.
Can I instead remove the now exhausted battery and run the laptop purely on A/C power?
This is what I did last night and left the battery on my shelf overnight. I don't however know how to tell if the thing calibrated or not
    In case it helps:
    Battery Information:
    Battery Installed: Yes
    First low level warning: No
    Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 1119
    Remaining Capacity (mAh): 115
    Amperage (mA): 1502
    Voltage (mV): 12501
    Cycle Count: 36

    OK that makes sense.
However, my laptop does not sleep. It literally loses all power without warning.
It has done so several times between 75% and 90% power remaining.
Last night I performed a PVRAM reset then allowed the system to operate on battery. When it went down to 75% remaining the battery immediately went down to 25% remaining and a warning came up. Ten minutes later it had 7% power remaining and I lost all power again.
I have this morning performed an SMC reset and it is currently charging. I am not sure whether this will fix the problem or whether I really have a faulty battery. Any further suggestions welcomed of course.

  • Macbook with 10.7.4 running slow and iPhoto won't launch

My Macbook was running very slow, so i verified and repaired permissions.   After I did that iPhoto will not launch.   I attached my LaCie on USB port and went into Time Machine.  Then went to the last backup and started restore.  It has been restoring iPhoto for 19 hrs.   My question is should I stop the Restore (not really sure it is restoring), then attempt to verify and repair permissions again?   I am thinking there may have been a problem with the last repairing disk permission?  I have 12GB left on MacBook

This seems like a very common issue! I purchased the OS X Lion the very next day after its release.. used it for a few days on my Macbook Pro.. I also updated all my applications (adobe, office, ilife etc) to make it run smoothly and compatible on the Lion.. but after a month or so, my machine became like the first macintosh Mr. Jobs made.. VERYYY SLOOWW!!!!! it would take 5-7 minutes to boot up, and the dock wud also take time!! The beach ball occupied my screen so much time, that I even forgot how the normal cursor looked like!
I decided to upgraded my RAM to 8GB, but same problem! I had like thousands of mails and didnt even find any solution to downgrade back to leopard!
I wasted almost a week to re-install snow leopard and all my applications!! and luckily google apps saved me with all my mails! Since then I have been ignoring every single update! I am happy with snow leopard!!
LION IS VERYY BUGGY! I wasted my $30 odd bucks!!! I often search for freezing beach ball lion!!! and seems there is no solution till now... NEVER GOING TO UPGRADE!!!

  • I7 macbook pro running slow

Brand new macbookpro with i7 processer is running slower than my old 2008 dual core macbook. Can't find the disk utility on mountain lion to do diagnostics.

Hey guys! the same problem is happening here. I have a macbook pro 2012 15" 2,3ghz intel core i7 4gb DDR3, and i think its slower than a mac mini i5 that I use to work. My apps takes some seconds to start up, sometimes even slower than my old macbook white core 2 duo. I've recently made a clean install of Mavericks and I'm still not satisfied with the performance, im' sure it could work better. Any tips? Should I worry about or I'm just demanding too much?
    Thankss!!

  • Can MBP be run with internal battery removed?

I'm trying to isolate a problem which I believe — but am not certain — is to do with the battery, so I'd like to take it out and boot the mac. Is this possible?
My old iBook G4 with the removable battery can be run without it, but can this be done on the MBP with internal battery, or is it needed to route the power supply?
    TIA

    Thanks guys
In fact I have booted the MBP now without the battery in order to test whether that was causing my kernel_task problem (i posted about this in another thread), and it appears not.
Kernel-task is running at over 103%, I'm can't boot at all sometimes, with the machine taking 10 mins to give the login window but then no keyboard input so login is impossible (this also happens in safe mode).
When it does boot (one out of two or three times), it runs fine for about 20 minutes and then things start crashing. I've tried booting of my clone and the symptoms are the same, so its not HD failure.
Bit stumped here, anyone got any suggestions?
(I'm currently posting on my old 2004 iBook G4, slow battered and with a screen that feels like I'm going half blind, but god I love this machine!. As the old saying goes 'they don't make 'em like they used to...' )

My 2011 MBP has begun running slow with frequent 'spinning beach ball' events. I'm running Yosemite and wondered if I should of use the original install disk for a maintenance reinstall. I presume I'd have to download Yosemite again, though I'd be happy just using Snow Leopard again too.
    Thanks for the help.

  • Run MBP with out battery?

My 2008 MBP battery has started to bulge meaning its time to buy a new one, only problem is I cant afford £120 at the moment so I was wondering if its safe to run the MBP with out its battery for around a month?

Just a word of caution... Without your battery, even a very brief power interruption will cause you to lose anything you may be working on... so, unless you have your charger plugged into an uninterruptible power supply... save often !
