MBP won't boot kernel panic
Hello good people
Out of nowhere my MacBook Pro has been acting funny. I have no clue to why this happened, but it happened after I rebooted the machine after Chrome started hanging while trying to purchase something. Chrome didn't crash or freeze, but no connections were working. I don't know for sure that my internet connection was working though. Anyway I figured I would close everything and try the ol' reboot trick, but when it booted a kernel panic happened. Since then a kernel panic happens every time I boot the machine. The panic logs are very similar though they don't match exactly.
Here are 4 of them on pastebin:
First: http://pastebin.com/UEVGr2RA
Second: http://pastebin.com/3EPPpJWQ
Third: http://pastebin.com/iVKZD87h
Fourth: http://pastebin.com/MEuUxWDt
I have tried resetting NVRAM and the SMC. Neither worked.
I can't boot in safe mode, but I can boot from an external hard drive connected via USB. Last week I installed an SSD drive and cloned my old harddrive, so I have a pretty similar setup on hand. It's the SSD drive that fails to boot.
The Disk Utility doesn't see anything wrong with either the permissions or the drive in general.
The disk mounts fine in Finder and I can seemingly browse all the data on there.
I removed the Little Snitch kext when I saw that on the first to panic logs right, but that didn't help either.
I tried the 'sudo touch /System/Library/Extensions' trick. Didn't help.
I am beginning to lean towards a reinstall but I really don't want to if I can avoid it, so I thought I'd throw it at the community. I hope someone out there can help. My own theory is that a file or something is corrupted and since I've got the same installation (albeit about a week old) I think I could replace the broken part if I can find out what it is.
Thanks in advance!
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

Mac Pro won't boot, kernel panic at boot, graphics card failure.
Yesterday my screen (30" Apple Cinema) started showing symptoms of graphics card failure, jagged lines across the screen. I rebooted my Mac Pro and it was gone. Then it happened again an hour later, this time the machine didn't boot, I get the Apple logo, and then it hangs up and the screen is shifted to left (I get apple logo on left side of the monitor instead of the middle) and jagged lines all over.
So the first thing I tested was using Target Disk Mode, it works. I can access my Mac Pro's internal HD's by TDM from my MacBook Pro. Then I tested single user mode, it does boot, I can't read what's written since the screen is shifted to left, but if I type (without seeing) reboot and hit enter, it reboots. So I assume the single user mode is working.
What else can I try to 100% make sure it's my graphics card that failed and everything else is ok with Mac Pro? I already ordered a graphics card replacement but I wouldn't like to be surprised if the Mac Pro still doesn't boot when the card arrives.HI,
*but I wouldn't like to be surprised if the Mac Pro still doesn't boot when the card arrives.*
If you haven't done so, boot from your install disk and run the Apple Hardware Test.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2684
Also, you can boot from your install disk and check the startup disk for errors that might need repairing.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. *Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space*
If you cannot boot from your install disk, try booting in Safe Mode
What is Safe Mode

MBP won't boot - "GRUB_" - tried installing ubuntu on an external drive
so i tried installing ubuntu netbook remix onto an external drive, and upon restarting my MBP won't boot to my internal HDD, once it displayed "GRUB_" with a blinking cursor, but is otherwise unresponsive.
now i just get the folder with the ? on it.
I've run disk util, repair permission, repair disk and still no luck.
i can boot the MBP into target disk mode and see the HDD on my other system and all appears to be good, and if i boot to the install dvd, the HDD shows up under the "startup disk" menu, but it just doesn't boot.
any thoughts on how to fix this?So I have an imac that I have had for about 3yrs. About several months ago, it started acting a little strange, it wouldnt pick up the mouse or the keyboard at times even thought they were plugged in properly to the usb port, sometimes both would work sometimes one or the other would work and other times they worked fine. About a month or 2 ago, I went to turn my imac on and it got to the screen where the little circular icon pops up implying it is loading, stayed that way for 2-3min then turned of and turned itself back on and did the same thing, made the apple sound got to the load screen turned of after 2-3min then turned back on, it has been doing that for the past month. What do I do?

Help!!! Brand new MBP with Santa Rosa Kernel Panics when started with external HD firewire 800 after 20 sec...
I don't know what it could be???
Do you???
Thanx
JayI'm actually having a similar issue and I don't think its related to networking at all.
I'm currently working in a corporate environment where we deploy pre-built OS X images to machines. I recently upgraded my images to 10.4.10 before we got our first Santa Rosa machine. This image was built on a MacPro and worked on all Intel Macs down to a MacMini CoreSolo. When I deployed my prebuilt image to the SR MBP, it caused a kernel panic immediately.
Further investigation revealed previous builds of OS X, including 10.4.10 upgraded from any other model Intel Mac will kernel panic the SR MBP. Going backwards the SR Build of OSX will not work on any previous model Mac, as any other build typically does, but causes severe graphical distortion, as if it does not have the display drivers for the other Macs.
To make a long story short, I think your issue comes from the fact that your external hard drive has an older build of OS X 10.4 than the SR MBP will run (even though you may have upgraded it to 10.4.10). Anyone who can corroborate my story with some more testing, please chime in.
I haven't found a solution for this issue yet other than keeping a seperate Santa Rosa Core 2 Duo image for my deployments. -
My MBP suffers from "kernel panic" attacks on an almost daily basis. This has occured ever since I downloaded Lion. The Apple support page suggests that this is a rare occurance, but it happens to me almost every day. Most often, if I let the computer go to sleep or close the lid, I'll find that it won't "wake up" without a complete re-boot. It always sends a report to Apple and for a couple of days I thought the issue was resolved, but now it's happening again with increasing regularity. I've reinstalled Lion once already... Any suggestions?
We can't help without the KP. In the meantime, see

OSX Won't Install / Kernel Panic at Boot Up
I have been having a few issues for the best part of a year now, firstly not being able to update to 10.6.8 meaning not being able to update to Lion. My onboard sound is non existemnt and have to run audio through HDMI.
To cut a long story short I was running the OS that came with the machine when I bought it and could not update at all as this would cause a kernel panic at boot up each and everytime meaning I had to reinstall the OS from the boot disk.
Last time this happened my internal HDD seemed to fail, tried everything to repair through disc utilities etc and ended up formatting and attempting a reinstall, I now receive this error log when I attempt installation, can anyone give me any ideas as to what is going on with it.
Its a late 2009 model 8GB Ram 320GB HDD and dual core 1.66 processor as far as I am aware (unfortunately cannot get the specific system info as I cannot boot or reinstall OSX.

Have you run Apple Hardware Test from the original Install Disc?
Hold d key or alt key at bootup to choose AHT, if it has 2 Install DVDs, AHT may be on the second one, run the extended tests. -
Mac won't start (Kernel Panics)
Hello,
My mac won't start up. It turns on, gets as far as the spinning circle and apple logo then a dark screen comes down with a Kernel Panic message. This occurred roughly three months ago and I ended up taking the mac into the regent street store where it was fixed under apple care warranty. My care has now run out, and the 90 day repair warranty has expired but the problem is back so obviously hasn't been fixed properly. Is there anything that can be done about this?
Every time I boot up the computer the message appears, I have tried rebooting with the safe option as well as re installing OSX from the original disks. The install completes successfully but upon restart it pops up with the original kernel panic message.
Luckily I have everything backed up so am prepared to try anything to get it running.
Thanks.Let us know, but since you obviously have another machine, have you tried Target Disk Mode and then Disk Utility?
use TDM to access Disk Utility.
1. Click the First Aid tab.
2. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
3. Select your Mac OS X volume.
4. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
Please post back, -
MacBook Pro doesn't boot (Kernel Panic), even CD/DVD doesn't work anymore
It is a very long story how I came to the point I am at right now, so I'll try to keep it really short:
My MPR stops booting and shows that Kernel Panic message (30s after starting the boot procedure with the grey screen and Apple logo), telling me to reboot. It even does not boot from CD/DVD anymore. Zapping PRAM doesn't help. Booting into Safe Mode doesnt work. Booting into Single User Mode and repairing the drive (/sbin/fsck -fy) did help a couple of times; scanning the system with Onyx and removing faulty preferences even helped a lot as well, everything seemed to work fine. But after the next system crash (happened during memtest procedure), I had the same problem again, this time even Single User Mode doesnt help. Booting from external FW-drive doesnt work. Every time: Kernel Panic.
Since I put in 4GB RAM four weeks ago (without any problems until last week), I replaced the new RAM with the old RAM. Still: Kernel Panic.
How I ran into the whole trouble? I replaced the original internal drive with a new 500GB WD drive. Now problems, until I accidently wiped the whole drive with BootCamp assistant.
At some point, I managed to boot from CD/DVD and (deep-)clean / format the whole internal disk, reinstalled 10.5.4, imported the settings and software from my old internal disk, and maybe f*ed everything up again by doing so. ONYX helped me to isolate a couple of preferences that went bad after that import, and after deleting them, everything seemed to be alright, especially after updating to 10.5.6. Until the system crashed next time, during a memtest. Memory seems to be ok though; as I already said, swapping it against the old RAM doesnt change anything, and TechTool didnt find anything. HD seems to be ok as well, neither Disk Utility nor ONYX nor TechTool did find any hardware fault.
After every crash so far, pcscd.pub was corrupted, with 17 instead of 16 blocks (Single User Mode fsck -fy fixed that), which is more than strange since I don't use any smart card stuff which that file is used for.
Now, even fixing that file doesnt help anymore.
Verbose mode shows that the boot process stops right after

It could be interesting to put back in the old internal drive, but I'd like to avoid that at almost any cost since putting back the cases lid was such a p. i. t. a. It doesnt seem to be necessary as the drive itself seems to be ok technically.
The thing that amazes me most is the fact that I can't boot neither from CD/DVD nor from external FW-drive(s) anymore.
Now I'm sitting here with a beautiful 2,5k$ brick and I'm wondering if anybody has a clue what I could do or who to ask (Apple Care won't be available before tomorrow). Thanks a lot in advance!Alright, "Signal 4" means "illegal instruction", as "info signal" shows.
Rebooting in Single User Mode and doing another fsck -fy shows that everything is as before: a damaged pcscd.pub (incorrect block count) and a "succesful repair" with "FILESYSTEM MODIFIED". Exiting Single User Mode and continuing boot up works this time . Very strange. Verifying the volume using Disk Utility: everything is ok; some of the rights were corrupted though (in detail:

but repaired without problems. BTW, "Die Zugriffsrechte unterscheiden sich für..." means "Access rights differ...", "Soll-Wert" means "reference value", "Ist-Wert" means "actual value".
Testing CPU, RAM, video RAM and USB using TechTool Deluxe: everything is ok.

Early 2008 MBP won't boot from internal disk
Hello Apple Community,
This is my first post here I hope somone can help me. I have a MBP from 2008 I upgraded to Lion about a month ago and had some minor issues right away, but now I can't get past the boot screen without a kernel panic. I did a time machine restore to one of my external drives and it boots up fine. I figured my internal drive was going bad so I installed a new one yesterday and the exact same Kernel Panic happens. I don't live in a city with an apple store so that isn't an option for me. I am contemplating going all the way back to leopard because the was the last os I can remember that was completely stable for me. Any suggestions?
Thank youCheck the format of your replacement drive. Verify that is was formatted as GUID. Often times the drives are formatted to the older scheme. It must be a GUID partition scheme to be bootable with an Intel Mac.

MBP Retina Late 2013 - Kernel Panic Crash
Hi guys, I was just wondering if any of you might have an insight into the Kernel panic that my new MBP just suffered from. I just booted up my computer after it was turned off all night, and it immediately crashed after logging in.

have you tried running your MacBook Pro’s Apple Diagnostics, to see if it can detect a problem with its RAM? -
New Unibody MBP won't boot from DVD or external drive, just loops
Hey
We bought a new Unibody MBP on Monday, and loaned it to our CTO for a presentation. Having got it back from him now I wanted to nuke the installation and put a fresh copy of leopard on it, so I dropped the DVD in the drive, powered down, and booted holding the "C" key.
I get the chime, screen lights up, thinks for a bit, and if you use your imagination you can almost hear the DVD spin up. Then the screen goes black, lights up, chime, thinks a bit, goes black, lights up, chime and so on
I've tried booting from an external bootable clone I created with CCC (firewire external HDD), and same symptoms.
I even tried swapping in a hard drive that I know has a working bootable copy of Leopard on it, and then all I get is the eternal cycle, without pressing any keys on startup.
I also tried holding down the Option (Alt) key on boot to get the boot device selector. This correctly identifies the various boot devices - the DVD, on-board HDD and external firewire drive (if connected), and lets you select them, tries to boot, thinks, black screen, screen lights up, chime, repeat cycle endlessly until extremely frustrated.
Is there a known cure for this or am I doomed to take the thing back to the Apple store on Monday?
Thanks

That is not the reason it didn't work. Here is the actual clarity:
*A retail Leopard DVD should be able to boot a new Macbook Pro unibody.*
So you are saying even if the driver for the controller on which the DVD drive sits is not available in the Leopard DVD you are using because the hardware was not manufactured at the time the Leopard release on the DVD was made, the OS should magically just boot? How is that possible? Unibody MacBook Pros have entirely NEW AHCI chipset - for which there won't be any drivers on the older Leopard DVD and as such the DVD wont be detected once the OS on the DVD loads. In cases where the chipset used is same (as in previous generations of MBP) it will boot.
The key difference here is that if you used an older version, some new hardware may not be supported - however, the computer *should still boot from the DVD*, which is the subject of this discussion.
The OP said that his computer boots from the DVD that came with the computer - just not with the old retail Leopard DVD. Also - what should happen if the new hardware happens to be the controller on which the DVD drive is sitting? How will it be able to read the DVD? What about the graphics card? If the drivers on the old leopard disk do not recognize the new graphics card - how is the OS going to display on screen?
On my way home, I stopped at a Mac store and asked them to test this. They successfully booted a new Macbook Pro unibody from an older Leopard DVD. And this is why Apple is replacing my computer, because it is a hardware issue, not a software one.
Again - you fail to understand that whether or not the old DVD boots on a new machine all depends on how much hardware has changed and what hardware has changed. It may boot on some generation of machine because the basic chipset and graphics did not change or were handled generically by the drivers on the older DVD but it may totally refuse to boot on new gen machine which has totally different / incompatible hardware.
So your claim that any old Leopard DVD must continue to boot on any new machine is not really technically explainable. -
Hi all,
Looking for some advice, as I've tried searching for this specific problem but can only find 'similar' and nothing exactly like what I'm experiencing.
About a week ago, I booted up my Mac, and it gave me the startup sound and the Apple logo came on, then I got the 'You need to restart your computer...' message (which through a later search I learned was a "kernel panic" message). So I did as instructed and the second time it booted fine.
Next day, I had the same issue, only this time it took me about five or six goes before it got to the loading page, but eventually it came on.
Since then, it's been doing this every time on boot, and only ever on boot. Once it loads up, everything is fine, it doesn't crash or anything.
From reading other kernal panic messages, it seems to be suggesting that it is a problem with the RAM? I haven't touched anything to do with the system itself (I know better than to mess around with hardware =p) so before I take this to a repair shop, I was wondering if there is anything else that could be causing this?
Many thanks.Although it certainly could be a problem with RAM, it could also be a software problem. Unfortunately, startup panics such as yours frequently are caused by corrupted system files required during startup. However, it's possible that it's a corrupted cache file causing the problem. There are some things you can do that may fix it.
First is to do the following:
Delete caches to resolve some startup problems:
Open the Terminal application in the Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following commands pressing return at the end of each:
sudo rm -rf /System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kernelcaches
You will be asked to enter your admin password. It will not be echoed.
sudo rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache
sudo rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions.mkext
sudo rm -rf /Library/Caches/com.apple.ATS
sudo rm -rf /Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices*
Quit the Terminal application and immediately restart your computer.
Second, download a utility such as TinkerTool System - VersionTracker or MacUpdate - and use it to clean all browser, user, system, and font caches; clear temp and log files. Do an immediate Restart. -
MBP won't boot. Gray screen, apple logo.
As above, my 2.4 Macbook Pro, won't boot past the gray Apple logo and that spinning circle.
Holding C doesn't allow it to boot from CD either, for Leopard/Tiger OR Disk Warrior!
Holding alt allows the start up menu, but then spits the CD out and only shows the Macintosh HD which obviously wont boot!
HELP!

MBP won't boot recovery USB drive, need help
HDD failed on 15" mid2009 MacBook Pro, purchased a Seagate 1TB hybrid drive (SSHD) to replace it with. Went to boot to USB recovery drive with OS X 10.8 using option/alt on boot and would only get the folder with flashing question mark. Tried command+R also. Tried different USB ports. Tried with HDD pulled out. The USB recovery drive does work because we were able to boot to it from a different MBP, and verified the files on it with Disk Utility. Just can't get any kind of recovery options or anything on this Mac with replaced HDD. Need help. Never encountered anything like this, can't find anything like it online, and none of my coworkers can figure it out. We've all been working comps for yrs, one even an ex apple-tech. Thanks for any suggestions!!
Sorry - missed that part about having used both USB ports...
Since you've verified that the USB thumb drive works on another Mac, and that it won't boot whilst holding down the option key, I would advise taking your machine to an Apple Store or an AASP to have them diagnose your machine (which will be free). They, too, should have USB sticks that they can use to test the machine.
Good luck,

How to clone disk (Disk Utility Restore, boot: kernel panic)
Hi, I've tried two times to clone my 120GB system disk (old Core2Duo Mac Mini (macmini2,1)) to a 1TB disk attached via USB cradle. Running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 which long time ago was upgraded from Leopard.
Used the Disk Utility "Restore" for cloning. Both times Disk Utility completed without errors. However when I swap the 1TB from USB cradle into mac mini (to internal SATA), the result of even a "Save Mode" boot attempt with Shift/Mod key held is always a kernel panic: "unable to find driver for this platform: \"ACPI\"
As my goal is to clone the existing system to a larger drive, a new install of OS X on the 1TB drive is out of the question. The original 120GB disk boots without problems. But the cloned attempts do not boot.
Judging from the kernel panic it is as if "Restore" doesn't actually restore, but leaves out files. Thus Disk Utility restore in SL is buggy?
Or is my cloning method wrong? Currently I just drag the 120GB system disk (the live running system) to the Source, then drag the 1TB USB disk to Destination, and allow full erase of destination, and do the priviledge elevation to root i.e. the usual password prompt. Does successful cloning need something extra...?If I understand correctly, what you're doing is copying your 120 GB drive to the 1 TB drive, then swapping the 1 TB drive into your Mac and trying to boot from it, and it fails.
You're doing it wrong, and that's why it fails. A Finder copy (what you're doing) does not respect permissions or symbolic links, which are required to make the system boot. You need to use something that does respect that.
Get your hands on a copy of SuperDuper http://shirtpocket.com/
(free for basic use, but it's well worth the small fee of $27.95 for full access to all features); and/or
Carbon Copy Cloner http://bombich.com
and use one of those to make a bootable clone of your 120 GB drive, then you can boot from it.
