MBP won't boot up

Hello everyone,
My MacBook Pro does not seem to want to boot up. I remember restarting it then closing it as if I was done using it and plugging it in to recharge but I opened it up again and it was not restarting. The Apple logo on the outside lid up because of the restart I assume but when I opened it, it was off. I pressed the power button to force shut down and turned it back on. When the gray screen popped up, there was a bar below the Apple logo and spinning wheel. I thought it was just reinstalling something like when you restart after updating the laptop. The bar disappeared and the wheel kept spinning. I manually turned it off with the power button and turned it on, but the same thing happened. I eventually pressed control + R to go to Mac OS X Utilities and tried to reinstall. I connected to Wi-Fi because apparently it could not automatically log into it like before. I got a pop up saying something about security trust certificate, but I didn't know what it was so I hit cancel. I was connected to the Internet but when I had to select a disk, both recovery and macintosh were locked. I forced shut down again to try and fill in the security trust certificate thing but I canceled again and the disks were still locked. I later went to disk utilities and clicked verify, I later clicked verify disk and I think also repair disk. Eventually, I got a message saying disk cannot be repaired and to restore or back up files. I went back to reinstall but this time only the recovery disk was present.
I was wondering what I should do. I tried to call AppleCare but it's not business hours (when are they?). How do you unlock the disks? What did the error message mean? Do I have to erase everything? If I can't see the Macintosh HD disk anymore, did I deleted it by clicking repair disk? Can this be fixed by myself or should I go to the Apple Store? I do remember buying the 3 year AppleCare, but I don't know if I'll need a receipt or how they can verify I do have it. I'm sorry if this is too long to read. I'm just trying to be very descriptive on what I did. Any help will be appreciated.

  • MBP won't boot - "GRUB_" - tried installing ubuntu on an external drive

    so i tried installing ubuntu netbook remix onto an external drive, and upon restarting my MBP won't boot to my internal HDD, once it displayed "GRUB_" with a blinking cursor, but is otherwise unresponsive.
    now i just get the folder with the ? on it.
    I've run disk util, repair permission, repair disk and still no luck.
    i can boot the MBP into target disk mode and see the HDD on my other system and all appears to be good, and if i boot to the install dvd, the HDD shows up under the "startup disk" menu, but it just doesn't boot.
    any thoughts on how to fix this?

    So I have an imac that I have had for about 3yrs. About several months ago, it started acting a little strange, it wouldnt pick up the mouse or the keyboard at times even thought they were plugged in properly to the usb port, sometimes both would work sometimes one or the other would work and other times they worked fine. About a month or 2 ago, I went to turn my imac on and it got to the screen where the little circular icon pops up implying it is loading, stayed that way for 2-3min then turned of and turned itself back on and did the same thing, made the apple sound got to the load screen turned of after 2-3min then turned back on, it has been doing that for the past month. What do I do?

    We bought a new Unibody MBP on Monday, and loaned it to our CTO for a presentation. Having got it back from him now I wanted to nuke the installation and put a fresh copy of leopard on it, so I dropped the DVD in the drive, powered down, and booted holding the "C" key.
    I get the chime, screen lights up, thinks for a bit, and if you use your imagination you can almost hear the DVD spin up. Then the screen goes black, lights up, chime, thinks a bit, goes black, lights up, chime and so on
    I've tried booting from an external bootable clone I created with CCC (firewire external HDD), and same symptoms.
    I even tried swapping in a hard drive that I know has a working bootable copy of Leopard on it, and then all I get is the eternal cycle, without pressing any keys on startup.
    I also tried holding down the Option (Alt) key on boot to get the boot device selector. This correctly identifies the various boot devices - the DVD, on-board HDD and external firewire drive (if connected), and lets you select them, tries to boot, thinks, black screen, screen lights up, chime, repeat cycle endlessly until extremely frustrated.
    Is there a known cure for this or am I doomed to take the thing back to the Apple store on Monday?

    So you are saying even if the driver for the controller on which the DVD drive sits is not available in the Leopard DVD you are using because the hardware was not manufactured at the time the Leopard release on the DVD was made, the OS should magically just boot?     On my way home, I stopped at a Mac store and asked them to test this. They successfully booted a new Macbook Pro unibody from an older Leopard DVD. And this is why Apple is replacing my computer, because it is a hardware issue, not a software one.
    Again - you fail to understand that whether or not the old DVD boots on a new machine all depends on how much hardware has changed and what hardware has changed. It may boot on some generation of machine because the basic chipset and graphics did not change or were handled generically by the drivers on the older DVD but it may totally refuse to boot on new gen machine which has totally different / incompatible hardware.
    So your claim that any old Leopard DVD must continue to boot on any new machine is not really technically explainable.

    As above, my 2.4 Macbook Pro, won't boot past the gray Apple logo and that spinning circle.
    Holding C doesn't allow it to boot from CD either, for Leopard/Tiger OR Disk Warrior!
    Holding alt allows the start up menu, but then spits the CD out and only shows the Macintosh HD which obviously wont boot!

  • MBP won't boot recovery USB drive, need help

    HDD failed on 15" mid2009 MacBook Pro, purchased a Seagate 1TB hybrid drive (SSHD) to replace it with. Went to boot to USB recovery drive with OS X 10.8 using option/alt on boot and would only get the folder with flashing question mark. Tried command+R also. Tried different USB ports. Tried with HDD pulled out. The USB recovery drive does work because we were able to boot to it from a different MBP, and verified the files on it with Disk Utility. Just can't get any kind of recovery options or anything on this Mac with replaced HDD. Need help. Never encountered anything like this, can't find anything like it online, and none of my coworkers can figure it out. We've all been working comps for yrs, one even an ex apple-tech. Thanks for any suggestions!!

    Sorry - missed that part about having used both USB ports...
    Since you've verified that the USB thumb drive works on another Mac, and that it won't boot whilst holding down the option key, I would advise taking your machine to an Apple Store or an AASP to have them diagnose your machine (which will be free). They, too, should have USB sticks that they can use to test the machine.

  • MBP won't boot after update!

    I've got a late 2006 model. I'm hoping my problem isn't related to a hardware failure. I left it on during the day, came home, the fan was running hard and it was really hot. Performance was slow, but everything worked.
    it was asking me to restart for the latest update anyway and I'd been putting it off for a day or two, so I decided to restart and let it go through with that.
    But now, it won't boot. It starts up with the grey screen, a bar starts filling at the bottom, gets maybe 1/10th of the way, blinks out then another bar appears, starts filling, gets a little further, then the machine shuts off. Exact same process every time I start it.
    I'm not really familiar with what my options are here.

    If it's not a hardware issue which happened to coincide with the update, the update may be corrupted or not completed. If either is the case, and you have another Mac available, you can try downloading the update from Apple Support Downloads, booting the MBP into FireWire Target Disk Mode (if it will cooperate), and trying to install the update that way. I have not tried this method, so cannot say if it will work or not, but I would try it prior to the alternative, which is to reinstall the OS (or, better yet, clone a backup to the MBP).

    I tried running disk utility by making it the target disk to my macbook and it told me that nothing is wrong.
    I ran Apple hardware test from the DVD and it says no problems.
    I'm at a loss.

    OK try entering:
    fsck -fy
    (Let it run through all the checks and repairs. If it fails first time, at any time, or finds and fixes a fault - run the command again and keep doing so (some fixes can take several passes) until it says "Appears to be OK")
    mount -uw
    autodiskmount -va (This is the key command)
    diskutil repairPermissions /
    When all looks OK
    reboot

    Did a complete automation on the latest version of Onyx for Lion since my mac was running a little slow.. And now my MBP doesn't boot at all! Just gets stuck on the apple logo. What do I do?

    THere are a few things to try.
      Start in safe mode
      Reset PRAM
       Hold down command-R to start in the lion recovery volume then run disk utility to repair the disk
       Do an SMC reset.
    You can try one of these methods then move on if that does not work.

  • My MBP won't boot!

    When I try to start it up it opens the load screen. I get the apple pic followed by a rotating dotted line circle (that means its thinking) and the progress meter. When the meter is 2/3 full it disappears and I'm left with a dotted circle and the apple. It stays as such until I turn it off.
    I booted MBP from the CD to try to repair the disk with Disk Utilities but DU couldn't find my HD. I rebooted, this time running the Apple Hardware test. It said my HD was hunky-dory. I rebooted again from the CD and DU still couldn't see my HD. I rebooted in single-user mode and ran the file system check (fsck). THAT said that it found minor errors, and that it successfully repaired them. Upon a second run, fsck found no problems. I tried starting normally again, but was greeted by my initial problem.
    Booting from the CD, DU could now find my elusive hard disk, so I first had it "repair disk permissions". It found many instances of something's value being 80 when it was supposed to be 0. It reset them, and I ran disk repair. It found some more minor problems and "fixed" them. It then had the audacity to tell me that everything is now OK. From there, neither running startup disk and selecting my HD nor giving the MBP a full reboot yields any deviation from the foremost scenario.
    I still have no idea what could be wrong with it. What else can I try? I need some answers from this machine! I won't be denied!

    When booted from your install DVD and have Disk Utility open, select "Zero out data" under Security Options. Note: This may take hours to complete before you can start the install.

  • Old MBP won't boot, not even Target disk mode

    Hi all,
    My 2009 MacBook Pro was being used by a student to prepare some material for me while I worked on my new(ish) Retina MBP. The system was sluggish, despite numerous attempts to use disk repair on it, throw out unused programs, etc. It finally got so slow (we were scanning large files, and even the attempt to open Finder on a directory with the large files would cause it to freeze) that we re-installed the operating system. That didn't help, so we reformatted the disk (losing a lot of work) and started again. Things were working just fine (although it was getting slower again) and then out of the blue it would not boot.
    We tried everything: Safe boot, single user, resetting *RAM, the whole kit and kaboodle.
    We then set it us as a Target disk - and were happy to see some files. But happiness was only short lived. Two files could be copied before the disk refused to continue, noting errors. We turned it off and back on in Target mode - the firewire symbol appears, but it is not seen in the Finder. The disk utility can see it, but as soon as we try to verify or repair it, it disappears.
    I've tried connecting it to a Windows machine - it dings, but does not appear. I've tried booting with the Install CD (won't move), I've tried booting with Linux (I get an error). Every now and then after a looooong time, it gets mounted as a Target disk. I've managed to scrape 3 (three) files from the disk, it is soon unresponsive, and then it won't mount again. Every now and they I can use the disk utility to access the disk, verify says I need to repair it, repair says I need to re-format the disk. I've done that a few weeks ago.
    Any ideas for something else I can try? Thanks!

    You have a hardware problem. Probably the drive has failed. But if the system does not turn on at all, no sounds of any kind, then the problem is more serious. Like the logic board has failed.
    Connecting a mac hard drive to a windows system wouldn't work unless you have a program that will allow windows to read mac formatted drives. Windows can't do that itself. You need something like macdrive (I think it is called) or some other program that can read mac formatted drive on a windows pc.
    But from reading your whole post the drive has completely failed. If the system still starts up, you hear the startup chime, all you have to do is replace the failed hard drive and reinstall the os and program to get the system working again.

    For no apparent reason, my otherwise well-working MBP (2007 model) simply won't log in to OSX (leopard). I try to boot it up, and I get the grey screen with the Apple logo, the spinning progress wheel, and then after about 4 minutes, it just powers off.
    Thoughts?

    Very expensive. Try FireWire Target Disk Mode first. If that doesn't work, I'd remove the HD, install it in an external enclosure (as low as $15) and see if it will boot the MBP or the data is accessible from another Mac.
    Do you think I can just pop a new HD in it and it'll work fine under a full reinstall?
    Doing my previous suggestions first may help to answer that. If there's absolutely nothing wrong with the HD, then that isn't the issue. If there is something wrong with it, likely a new HD is the fix.

  • MBP won't boot due to hard disk problem

    I have a late 2008 which just started to have problems booting up.
    The trouble started a week ago, when my MBP would shut down unexpectedly while I'm working(on battery power). When I tried to reboot from battery power it didn't work. However, it's not the issue of low battery level. I had plenty juice in the battery. So I attached to the mag safe power supply, it would boot up again.
    On yesterday morning after another unexpected shut down, I plugged the mag saft back in and hope it would boot up again. Never again. It will alwasy stuck at the gray screen with a spinning circle. So I did quite a few standard checks such as booting from Snow Leopard install DVD, and run DiskUtility. It tells me my MBP Hard Drive has problems and can not be repaired. So I figure it's the HD problem. Now I just want to salvage some data off from that HD, get a new HD and start over again.
    I tried to boot from DiskWarrior 4.2 DVD, it didn't boot up. It boot up fine with Snow Leopard DVD. So the optical drive works fine.
    The HD is the Hitachi 7200rpm travelstar 250GB.
    Any advice?

    I totally agree with making a Super Duper copy of the drive before proceeding with anything else--that creates an exact copy of the problem drive so that everything is preserved. It would also create a duplicate that could be used to experiment with.
    One way to do this is to get the replacement drive for the MBP and place it in an enclosure, maybe even using one of OWC's kits. The MBP's drive is already mounted on the Mac Pro's desktop, and the new drive in the enclosure can also be mounted on the MacPro's desktop and properly formatted using Disk Utility. Then Super Duper can be launched and used to copy the MBP's drive to the new drive. Once that's done, the OS could be reinstalled on the new drive and we would be able to see if that cured the password problem. Since Super Duper can make a bootable clone, we could see if the MBP would boot from it by plugging it into a MBP port and trying an option boot. If everything works, you can just install the new drive in the MBP.
    Doing something like this does not touch the original MBP drive and its contents, so everything is preserved.
    Just about any external drive would work for this purpose--it doesn't necessarily need to be the one that you intend to use as a replacement.
    I agree that we don't really know for certain just what the fault is, but I think a Super Duper copy would be in order no matter how we go about doing the troubleshooting.

  • MBP won't boot from HD or disk drive

    After using my MBP daily since I got it in Feb, this morning it refused to boot. It got as far as the gray screen with the logo and the spinning cog. The cog would spin for a while then stop. Then nothing. This has happened a time or two when I'd installed a program that the computer didn't like, and I'd always been able to use the install disk.
    This time it didn't work! I tried starting while holding the "C" --didn't work. Same thing..cog stuck.
    Next I tried holding down the Option key while booting. This gave me a choice of HD or Disk drive. HD booted and immediately froze before I could do anything.
    Rebooted and tried chosing the disk drive...nothing.
    This has gone on all day with intermittent breaks to scream and punch pillows.
    Next, I found a TechTools disk in my Warranty pack. I somehow managed to eject the install disk and put in the TechTools disk according to direction on the front of the disk, with C key depressed...nothing. I took out the battery and reset the power settings. No help. I've tried every key combination that is physically possible with only 10 fingers and nothing has helped.
    I'm embarassed to say that I'm typing this on my husband's Fujitsu Lifebook. I'll never hear the end of this.

    The genius is wrong. As long as you have the latest version of OS X on a PowerPC Mac it will work fine.

    You can't format a disk in an Intel-based Mac from a PowerPC Mac and have it boot successfully but you can access the disk or repair it.

  • MBP Won't Boot - No Safe Mode

    Hey everyone, I have a late 2011 MBP, 15" with i7 processor.  Factory 750GB HDD.  OS 10.9.?
    When I try to boot, it goes to the gray login screen as usual.  When I login, I would get the "trouble" screen (gray) with the spinning wheel and the progress bar across the bottom indicating that there was a problem and it was checking things.  This runs for about 10 minutes, the progress bar moves all the way to completion, disappears like it's going to boot, then all goes black and it's dead.
    So I tried to boot to safe mode by holding shift down after "the sound".  However, I wasn't getting "the sound" at all, and it would never go to safe mode.
    So then I reset the NVRAM / PRAM per the recommended steps.  Now I get "the sound" but still no safe mode.
    So then I tried to boot into single user mode, which took a few tries, but then it went there.  I ran "/sbin/fsck -fy" at the command prompt and was told a few times that there were incorrect numbers of records and eventually that the disk could not be repaired after 3 attempts.
    My backup setup is like this....  I have two 3TB drives that each have a bootable clone of the main HDD via SuperDuper on one partitiion (750GB) and the remaining space is a time machine drive.  (I swap them out once a week or so with one being kept offsite.)
    I then plugged my backup drive in and tried to boot to the clone (called "bootable 1") via the startup manager.  And I got the same exact boot sequence and black screen death as noted in the second paragraph above.
    So basically I can't boot to anything at this point.  I'm pretty good with my 20+ years of Windows experience, but I'm pretty new to Macs.  What on Earth do I do now?

    I got my backup drive #2 today and booted into the "OS X Utilities" screen and went into the disk utility.  From within the disk utility, I can unlock drive #2 (it's encrypted like the others), and verify it, and it checks all OK.  So all seems to be well with this drive.
    However, when I exit the utility and select drive #2 as my boot disk, it tries but then I get the flashing folder icon with the question mark on it.  No prompts, no status bar, no nothing.  I let it sit like that for at least a half-hour or so and got nothing.
    I suspect that the file integrity on drive #2 is fine.  And I should theoretically be able to image from backup drive #2 onto a new internal drive.  But....
    1.  How can I do that if I can't boot to drive #2?
    2. Why can't I boot to drive #2?

  • Plugged in iPhone to update, now MBP won't boot up

    I have a MBP Unibody (late 2008) running OS 10.5.8 and a 3G iPhone - everything was working fine until today when I plugged in the iPhone to update to OS4.1 - iTunes wouldn't open and gave me a weird message about installing a new version. Tried again, nothing, but the computer froze, so I held down the power button to shut it down. When I went to restart - I just got the gray start up screen with a black apple and a spinning symbol - but it never got past that.
    I tried starting up in safe mode, couldn't.
    Then I tried running disk utility to repair the HD. No luck, repair failed.
    So now, I'm trying to figure out how to get my data off my HD. I know I can reboot and reinstall everything (if HD is okay, this should work) - but like an idiot, I don't regularly back-up my HD. Now I'm stuck with a bunch of valuable info on that HD that I really can't afford to lose. How do I get it off there?
    I have another mac, can I connect these two via firewire or ethernet and copy the appropriate files over?
    Can I back it up to an external HD? I tried this, but I can't seem to get the "system drive" into the source field to back up. It won't let me drag it there.
    What can I do other than pay big bucks for someone to pull it off for me?
    Please help!

    was able to get the system drive into the source box, but it still wouldn't let me back it up, which brings up my next question - if I remove the HD and install it in an external enclosure - hook it up to another mac, will I be able to access those files that way or since it can't be repaired, I'm S.O.L.?

  • MBP Won't Boot to Windows/CD

    I have a late 2011 15inch MBP running OS X Lion 10.7.4 with a 100GB Windows 7 partition that I access using either Bootcamp or Bootchamp.  I've had the laptop for 4 months. I need to use Windows for certain applications that don't have a Mac version.
    This week (believe it was Sunday/Monday) I can no longer boot to Windows using either Bootcamp/champ. 
    When I boot using camp I hit the alt key, access the drive selection screen and select the Windows HD.  Once I click on the Windows HD, the screen freezes and I have to do a hard reboot.  The same scenario happens when I try to boot from a CD.
    When I boot using Bootchamp I will select "restart to Windows", it freezes on a grey screen and I no longer have to access to my second monitor.  I also have to do a hard reboot.
    I have Apple One Care and called Apple tech support tonight.  I was told that my initial support expired 25 days ago and would have to pay $249 for a 1 year support package, pay $50 for single issue support, or take it into the nearest Apple store and "they might be able to help you".
    This is my first non-Ipod/Touch/Pad/Phone and honestly I'm very frustrated due to the lack of solutions/support.  I've found comments on the web with similar symptoms, but no consistent solutions.
    I would welcome any suggestions/solutions from the community in order to regain my ability to boot to Windows, because I am absolutely not getting it from Apple.

    I would be happy to assist you. As there are many models of HP Notebooks, I would need the model number (How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?) and Which Windows Operating System you are running. What led up to you needing to download the AMD HD 7690m XT Driver? Were you having an issue with your Notebook?Where did you download the AMD HD 7690m XT Driver from? Have you tried to boot into Safe Mode instead of starting Windows Normally? Please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices connected to your Notebook, as these could cause some issues.

    I am trying to convert old arrays in LabVIEW 4.x and 5.x to the new Waveform Data Type in LabVIEW 6i. Please ref. Doc. LabVIEW 6.0 Upgrades Notes page 7-8 at a source of reference. Has anyone ever tried it?
