MBP Won't Burn CDs Using External Drive

My internal optical drive in my 2006 MBP died because of something getting stuck in it, and I just got an external drive to replace it (Samsung USB 2.0 8x DVD Writer External Optical Drive for Mac and PC SE-S084C/RSBN). If I hook it up and put a DVD in, it functions normally - the DVD Player opens and plays the DVD. If I put a blank CD-R in, the box saying that a blank disc has been inserted comes up and give me the option of opening iTunes, etc. But then if I hit "Burn Disc" in iTunes or a Burn Folder from the Finder, it tells me to insert a blank disc. It seems to only recognize the internal (non-functioning) drive and not the external one when I want to burn CDs. Anyone have suggestions on how to fix this?
Thanks!!

Welcome to the discussion forums-
How about if you where to drag to the desktop the following file:
com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist
You can find it in your user/home folder/library/preferences/com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist
Restart your computer and see if this solves the problem. if it does you can trash the plist file are return it if no change.

  • New 13" MBP won't mount or recognize external drives via FW 800

    Hi all,
I have a brand new 13" MBP. I have two external 750GB Lacie drives that were formatted for MacOS on my previous 13" MacBook. I mounted these drives via USB on the older laptop.
Neither of these drives will mount on my new laptop via the FW 800 ports. I've tested two cables on both drives and nothing works. Also, neither of the drives appear via disk utility when using FW 800. The drives do however appear when using USB.
Is my FW 800 port faulty? Could it be something else? Thanks!

    Hi,
I'm having a similar problem to you - my external drive is not recognised by my MacBook Pro when using FW800 but it is when using USB2.
Did you have any luck getting your firewire to work properly?

  • IDVD using external drive

First timer, here! Hi. My DVD drive in my imac has died( too many movies burned for clients!), so I have purchased an external drive. Only thing is how can I let my mac and more importantly iDVD know that I want to burn to the external drive?
OR, If i have iDVD archive the project what files do i use from the files created, to be able to play in a DVD player? Hope some nice person can help! Thanks

I don' t use an external burner, so will have to defer to others re your first question.
On your second question, when you archive an iDVD project, as opposed to an ordinary Save, it will bundle all of the assets of the project together so that you can move it to another computer to burn it or back it up. Here are the steps:
    *To archive your iDVD project:*
Check the file permissions for the assets in the project and set them to Read & Write if you want others to be able to open or copy the assets in the archived project.
Choose File > Archive Project, and then click Save.
Type a name for your archived project.
Locate the folder where you want to save the project. The size of the current project is displayed in the Archive Project dialog.
Click "Include themes" if you want to archive the themes with the project. Select this option if you are using custom themes that might not exist on another computer, or if you want to be able to use your theme in future versions of iDVD.
Click "Include encoded files" so the project files won't need to be reencoded after being moved to a different location. To save time and hard disk space, leave this option unchecked.
Click Save. Your project is saved with the word "Archived" in the file name.

  • MacPro won't mount Windows USB3 External drive

I have a macPro 2,1 and it won't mount a Windows external drive that is USB3.  I've tried NTFS-3G but still won't see the USB3 drive. I thought USB3 was backwards compatible. Can anyone help?

WEll, Paragon tends to have kept up their NTFS drivers
Your Mac is using PCIe 3.0 controller which are iffy even on OS X and may not be seen by Windows (and my Windows PCIe 3.0 card doesn't show up or work in Mac OS).
If you attach it via USB2 it might show, depends really on the bridge used by the enclosure probably. It is has USB3 and eSATA and you have PCIe SATA (Sonnet E4P is expensive but works great in both platforms)

Join the crowd. I was thinking of going back to a previous version, but had heard that could be a problem. Fortunately, I have more than one computer and things work fine there. I'm thinking it could be the burner in the problem computer, but it was working just fine before the upgrade...

I downloaded the Nero BurnRights from the link in your reply. I installed it. After I installed it and re-booted my PC, there was no Nero group to add users to. Or if there was I can't find a way of adding users to the Nero group.
If I look in the system event  log, there are lots of times where the cdrom shows and error. If I double click on the event entry, it says "The device, \Device\CdRom0, has a bad block " . If I look this up, it suggests that the drive may need to be cleaned. So I cleaned it with a CD cleaning disc. It made no differance.

  • Combo drive won't burn CDs or read DVDs

My finace renectly purchased a new iBook G4 in early October, and the combo drive has never been able to burn CDs or read DVDs. Is this a common problem with iBooks? Is it a software problem or a hardware problem? How do we go about getting it fixed without Applecare? Any help/info would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, Zach. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You have found the G3 Dual USB iBook Forum, but I can help you out a bit. The warranty on the iBook gives you free phone support for any and all issues for 90 days. Use it. For full information on the warranty in plain language, check out Rachel's helpful FAQ Is phone support and warranty service free?
I recommend that your fiancée buy AppleCare. If you have any problems whatsoever with a new iBook within the first year of its eligibility, it is foolhardy to not purchase AppleCare if it is available where you live.

  • How do I back up my mbp using external drive...

that has been used to backup my macbook?
I have the G Drive usb.
I don't plan to use it back and forth between my mbp and mb.
I did the final back up for my mb now I wanna use it for my mbp.
How do I do it without having to delete its content?

This one (Hitachi) has partition tab
But when I click the g drive (whick is the name of the external drive) it has no partition tab
So I guess it's the Hitachi one?
However when I change the partition layout to 2 as below
when I click apply it says that it'll delete my data
    How do I solve this?
I'm sorry I have to put pics as I don't know how to explain it

  • MBP upgraded to Mavericks won't boot off of external drive

Now that I have upgraded my MBP to Mavericks I can not longer boot off of extrenal drives like I has in the past. I hold down the option key at boot up and it display the external drive as a bootable option but once clicked....it just hangs.
    Has anyone else experienced this?

Well, want to rule out drive case,, as those do come up with EVERY new OS, just hit Lion 10.7 forum when it came out, or when 10.6.0 came out 3 yrs ago.
Maybe the power adapter is the weak link.
As I said, and goes back yrs, not a fan of FW/USB/eSATA case from major vendors (LaCie, WD, Seagate etc).
And you could try another case. Be sure to buy a case that lets you swap in your own hard drives though.
http://www.macsales.com/firewire - look for bare drive case "0" capacity hard drive

  • ITunes won't burn CDs anymore...

I've tried several times to burn a CD from iTunes. It used to be fine...it will burn all the way through, then stumble a bit on the final song, taking a few minutes longer than necessary, then it will say it's finished, but when I try to play it, it doesn't work. On iTunes, it will show the little speaker to the left of the song, skipping from one song to the next very fast, but won't ply anything.
    Any help?

  • Using external drive to run programs

I have just bought a 500Gb External Hard Drive for my MBP, which can be connected via USB, FW400 or FW800.
I was wondering if i were to install applications, games such as "Call Of Duty 2" or a program such as "Pro Tools" onto the external drive, would i be able to run them on my MBP from there, and if so, will it run slower than it would if it were installed on the internal HD?
Any help/advise would be great. Thanks

That other guy is right that it won't run any slower. I don't know about CoD2, but I've been meaning to try running it from an external HD.
As for Pro-Tools, you would be correct to run it from the external drive for two reasons:
    a) the ability to take your session to a different pro-tools rig (duh)
    b) Pro Tools, depending on your computer's particular specifications, will either barely run or not run at all from a record drive (in this case, your external 7200rpm drive) under 7200rpm. To be honest, I would highly recommend upgrading to a 10,000-15,000 rpm drive. 7200 will work, but you might have problems when recording 24-bit audio (don't use 16-bit, its garbage). As long as the rest of your comp is up to par, you shouldn't have any real problems though.
email me if you have any other pro-tools or CoD2 (mac version) questions. I'm currently in the process of getting my Pro-Tools Operator's Certification, so I could use the practise:)

  • Idvd will not use external drive

i have a broken dvd superdrive in my computer so i bought an external drive and idvd won't find it... itunes does... how can i change where idvd looks for my drive ??

If you are using an early version of iDVD (you are in the iDVD 4 and earlier forum) you can't use a non-Apple 'Superdrive' from iDVD.
You must create a disk image file (it should be an option under FILE in iDVD) and then use Apple's Disk Utility to burn the disk image to writable media.
Correction: I just 'fired up iDVD 4' and it doesn't offer the option to create a disk image file. Sorry.
You will need to update to a later version. Try ebay. Or buy Roxio's Toast Titanium to create simple DVDs.

  • MBP: boot to Windows 7 from external drive?

MBP: booting to Windows 7 from an external drive? Is this poss?
Further, is it possible with a 1TB external drive to partition it to two 500MB volumes, and have one (a) with a bootable clone of the OSX, and the other (b) with 64 bit Windows 7?
I would keep (a) ready in case of a HD failure on my MBP, and use (b) for a couple of PC progs I have that I don't want to go to the trouble of buying the Mac version. They run fine on a PC.
Also would be good for checking cross-platform compatibility of websites.
Would these work with eSata connections (Time Machine doesn't)? or else I'll go FW800.
    Cheers!

No, as mentioned 10's of dozens of times, Windows won't.
OS X has always allowed booting from Firewire, and now USB (but that is slow).
Casper 6 will backup Windows to another drive, as will Windows Home Server to external devices.
Many programs can be run through a VM like VirtualBox, Paralells, Fusion.
SuperDuper is just one of the more popular programs to backup (clone) OS X and have it bootable.
Never rely on just one backup set or drive.
If you can go with eSATA (ExpressCard) that is faster but FW800 would be okay and be bootable, eSATA probably not.
    Check http://www.macsales.com/firewire for both

  • Use external drive for Time Capsule backups AND file storage?

I have an external drive formatted by my MBP.  I'm using it to store my iTunes music library and iPhoto pics.  Can I use the drive for Time Capsule backups as well?

Yes, but that is not recommended. Storage and backup should be kept separate to reduce the chances of a disk failure. This is especially important because you cannot even partition a Time Capsule drive. Go get a separate drive for your storage needs. Get another drive for a second backup and use a different method of backup than Time Machine
