MBP won't Connect to Mac Mini: Using Base Station and Airport Express- HELP

I'm not a n00b Current setup: I have the dual-band Basestation and an Airport Express to extend the range. I have a MBP and a Mac Mini(Mac Mini is connected to Airport Express due to range).
Everything works fine and then one day I can't connect to my Mac Mini from my MBP on the same wifi network. The Mini will show up in Finder, but when I click, it can't connect.
Everything is running latest updates and latest firmware versions. Running 10.6.3.
Please help. Thanks!

  • Using both Airport Extreme Base Station and Airport Express

I am using a Airport Extreme and a AX, my goal is to use the base unit on one floor of the home and they AX as an extender.
I have linked the AX unit to join the existing network, now how to do I enable WEP 128 bit?

Here are the WDS setup steps...
    AEBSn - WDS Setup
(Note: To facilitate the WDS set up, place the base stations within near proximity of each other during the set up phase, and then relocate them to their desired locations when complete.)
    Main Base Station Setup (AEBSn)
o Click the AirPort status menu in the menu bar and choose the wireless network created by the base station you want to set up as the main base station.
o Open AirPort Utility (located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder on a Macintosh computer, or in Start > All Programs > AirPort on a computer using Windows).
o Select the main base station, and choose Manual Setup from the Base
Station menu, or double-click the base station to open the configuration in a separate window.
o Enter the base station password if necessary. If the base station is using the default password of public, you will not be prompted for a password.
o Click Wireless in the toolbar, and then choose “Participate in a WDS network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu.
o Click WDS and then choose “WDS main” from the WDS Mode pop-up menu.
o Select the “Allow wireless clients” checkbox if you want client computer to connect to this base station.
o Click the Add "+" button and enter the MAC address of the base stations you want to connect to this base station.
o Click Update to send the new settings to the base stations in the WDS.
    Remote Base Station Setup (AX)
o Click the AirPort status menu in the menu bar and choose the wireless network created by the base station you want to set up as a remote base station.
o Open AirPort Utility (in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder on a Macintosh computer, or in Start > All Programs > AirPort on a computer using Windows).
o Select the remote base station, and choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu.
o Enter the base station password, if necessary. If the base station is using the default password of public, you will not be prompted for a password.
o Enter the same network password as the main base station, if necessary.
o Click AirPort in the toolbar and click Wireless. Choose “Participate in a WDS network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and choose the same channel as the main base station from the Channel pop-up menu.
o Click WDS and choose “WDS remote” from the pop-up menu.
o Enter the MAC address of the main base station in the WDS Main field. The MAC address is also referred to as the AirPort ID and is printed on the label on the bottom of the base station.
o Click Update to transfer the settings to the base station.

  • Can I use MacBook as a base station and airport express to extend?

I currently have my ethernet cable plugged in to Airport Express to provide WiFi in my house. However, the signal doesn't always reach upstairs. Can I plug the ethernet in to my Macbook downstairs and use the AE upstairs? Or how can I make the signal stronger upstairs?

Can I plug the ethernet in to my Macbook downstairs and use the AE upstairs?
    Unfortunately, no.
You are asking about configuring the AirPort Express to "extend" a wireless network from your Mac. It cannot do this.
It can only extend a wireless network when you have another AirPort base station. In other words, it always takes a minimum of 2 AirPort routers to extend a wireless network.
If you add another AirPort Express approximatel half the distance from your "main" Express and configure it to "extend a wireless network", you will have more wireless signal coverage upstairs. Here, I' am assuming that you have the "n" wireless versions of the AirPort Express.

  • Airport Base station or Airport express to use wirelessly for dial up ?

I have an Ibook G4 1.33 with a Airport extreme card.
I currently have it set it up to the wireless modem that my phone company provided for me for my DSL service.
Unfortunately I am moving to an area that does not have DSL service. I would like to know if I can set up my Ibook to use it wirelessly and have it connected to an Airport base station or Airport express in order to have my dial up service to work wirelessly???? So Airport base station or Aiport Express?? Many Thanks in advance- Geof

The only base station with dial-up capability (in addition to traditional ethernet equipped modem capability) is the AirPort Extreme Base Station w/modem. Check the Apple Store to look over the details, and make sure you are looking at the AEBS with the modem (there is also a version without a dial-up modem which will not work in your application).

Sorry, but it is not possible to "extend" the Guest Network using either wireless or an Ethernet connection.

  • Using Dlink 524 as base station and airport extreme as remote?

    hello,
is it possible to use a dlink 524 as a WDS base station, and set up my airport extreme as a remote station?
I have tried to use the airport setup utility however I dont seem able to connect to the internet. I have also tried to set up the Dlink, however there doesnt appear to be any referenced to WDS. Sorry, I know nothing about networks.

No the D-Link is not compatible with Apple's WDS.

  • Connecting two Mac Minis using wifi

    My actual set up:
Bedroom - Macmini (2007) linked to a dsl modem via an ethernet cable. A Samsung display, a LaCie 2tb drive, are also connected to it.
    In a very near future:
LivingRoom - Macmini (2011, to be delivered in a couple of days... hopefully) will have access to internet via wifi. A 55" TV, a LaCie Minimus 2tb drive (a clone of the other one in the bedroom) and a DAC will be connected to the new mini.
    My question:
How can I connect the two minis together using wifi so that I can have easy acces to all the files in the drive connected to the Mac mini in the other room?
I have looked at the "File sharing preferences" in the system preferences but I am not that sure how to do it.
A little guidance would be greatly appreciated!

"File sharing preferences" is indeed how to do it.  Connect both minis to your router (one by ethernet cable, one by wifi, it doesn't matter.)
Then turn on "File Sharing" in Sharing Prefs on both minis.  Also, give them both meaningful, different names under "Computer Name".
Then, when you open a finder window on one mini, the other one should appear under "Shared", like this:

  • External hard drive connected to mac Mini is having problems and won't repair

    Hi,
Thanks in advance for any support.
My Mac mini (OS 10.7.5) isn't reading the external drive correctly and sometimes doesn't find it at all. When it does find the drive, some folders which I know to be large show up as empty (not always the same folder, I think).  I'm quite sure the drive is having problems and want to repair it, just so it can be stable enough to duplicate (i.e. copy the external).
But it won't repair in Disk Utility because it can't unmount. I tried turning off Spotlight via Terminal, but it still won't unmount. Any suggestions?
    Thanks

    Hi Linc,
    Thanks for the reply.
Do you mean installing it in another enclosure? How easy or difficult is it to move the drive -- and should this be done by a professional?
    Thanks

  • How can I change the base station my airport express connects to?

I just added a new AirportExpress to my wireless network and am using it to extend the range of the network and for AirPlay. When setting it up I selected the main base station that provides the wireless network when asked to select a device for it to connect to. However, now when I view it in Airport Utility, it's the only device on the network that has only Good signal strength rather than Excellent. There is another AirportExpress conencted which has Excellent signal strength that is the closest access point to this new AirportExpress.
How can I change the setup using Airport Utility so that that's the device that it's using to connect to the network?

With a Mac using the Airport Utility.
With a PC using the Airport Utility you can install on your PC with the install disc included.

  • Connecting iMac to Network via Ethernet Cable and Airport Express

I've tried reading through the various posts to solve this and haven't had any luck. Any help is deeply appreciated.
I have an Airport Extreme as my main 'base' for our wireless network. I purchased an Airport Express today with the notion of using it to extend my network in the following way: I want to connect an iMac and a printer to the Express (using Ethernet and USB cables respectively) and have the Express serve as a remote for the Extreme base. I have found a number of websites saying this is possible, but none explain how to. I tried the WDS option, which failed to work. I later saw posts here saying that was not the optimal scenario. I'm afraid the 5Ghz/2.4Ghz settings combined with Airport ID addresses has pushed me past my competency!
Thanks in advance for your help and a festive St. Patrick's Day!

Temporarily, power down the AirPort Express and concentrate on the AirPort Extreme to make sure that it is functioning correctly, can get an Internet connection, etc.
A complete power cycle of the network is often useful when you have been making changes. Power everything off, order is not important.
Wait a moment, (or wait 5-10 minutes if you have cable modem), then power up the modem first and let it run a moment by itself. Then power up the AirPort Extreme the same way.
Check your settings using AirPort Utility - Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab just below the row of icons
If the Wireless Mode setting is "Create a wireless network", make sure there is a check mark next to "Allow this network to be extended"
Note the exact setting for Security that is being used
    Update to save any changes
Post back when the AirPort Extreme is functioning correctly as above and we'll tackle the AirPort Express

  • Mac OS 10.8.1 and airport express

I recently upgraded to 10.8.1 and my airport has been kind of fussy so I reset it and tried re-installing the utility, but it says that Mac OS 10.8.1 isn't supported so I can't install it.  Is there anything I can do?

Open the archive with Pacifist, copy the executable bundle to /Applications.

ipad 2 and ipod touch  keeps on dropping wifi, would upgrading to an apple router/airport express help?  all my other pc's work well with my current network.

  • Network set up using airport extreme, time capsule and airport express

I have searched for relevant answers but can only find different bits here and there.
My set up is as follows:
I have a Linksys wireless router running a stable wireless network for the other computer users in the house and wish to create an extended, additional network using airport extreme connected to the Linksys by ethernet to create the network and then time capsule close to my Mac Mini on my desktop and airport express at the other end of the house to try and extend the range of the network.
I have been trying for 4 days to set this up but without success. I have tried all of the options mentioned in different posts, using WDS, extending a new network etc. I can get connection between the three devices but monitoring on iStumbler there appears to be little improvement in the strength of the signal, iStumbler also shows the time capsule dropping it's signal totally every 10 or so seconds for a few seconds and then I get a positive signal strength for another ten seconds or so.
Can anyone help, it is driving me insane. I am a recent convert to apple computing and have been hugely impressed with all products until now. The claim that the set up of these wireless products is simple seems to be very exaggerated.
I am happy to provide any relevant system or hardware information.
    Thanks in anticipation.

I have an AirPort Extreme acting as a wireless base station, connected to a BT router by ethernet.
Then the correct setting for Connection Sharing on the AirPort Extreme would be "Off (Bridge Mode)".
If I set Connection Sharing to "Share a public IP address", I'm told that:  "The DCHP range you have entered conflicts with the WAN IP address of your Apple Wi-Fi base station"
Exactly. You have two routers....The BT device and the AirPort Extreme in series with both of them trying to act as the "main" router when you configure the AirPort this way. That won't work.
Only one can be the main router, and it must be the BT device in your setup. So, the AirPort Extreme....and any other AirPorts on your network must be setup to work in Bridge Mode to allow the network to operate correctly.

  • How do i connect my mac mini to a kvm switch using the hdmi to dvi adapter?

I want to connect my Mac Mini using the HDMI to DVI adapter to a KVM switch cable. I have an Iogear KVM switch. The cable from the KVM switch has a male VGA end connection. I have been trying to determine the right adapter to connect the female DVI connection to the male VGA connector. I will be using the Mac mini and a PC running through the KVM switch. This is doable as the iogear switch is compatible with both a PC and a Mac. Any ideas out there? Thank you.

You would need to get  HDMI or DVI to VGA CONVERTER, not a simple adopter. The converter requires USP connection for power. HDMI is only digital while VGA is analogue.

If your MIni has a mini displayport or Thunderbolt port yu can get a les expensive mini displayport to VGA afopter.
