MBP won't ' deep sleep'

MacBook Pro Mid 2011 13"
i5 2,4 GHz
OS X 10.8.2
4 GB RAM
Hi all! I have a problem with my MacBook Pro regarding the deep sleep mode. Normally when you close the lid, the MacBook goes into sleep modus. When you open it, you're back in a second. When you don't use the MBP for a couple of hours, it goes into deep sleep.
I wanted it to put it manually to deep sleep, so I downloaded the deep sleep widget.
(this one: http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashb...deepsleep.html)
It went into deep sleep but when I tried to wake it, it got stuck at the loading screen. It then made 3 *beeps*, repeatedly and I had to turn it off and then turn it on again.
So I tried some terminal fixes, but now it won't even go to deep sleep anymore.
Here is what I did in this order:
Removed the deep sleep widget
Terminal: sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0
rm /private/var/vm/sleepimage
Set back to: sudo pmset hibernatemode 3
Pram - PMC Reset
Reinstalled OS X
None of this fixed the problem.
So now my MBP won't go into deep sleep mode, and I don't know why.
Is there anyone who knows how to fix this or provide me with any tips or pointers?
Thanks in advance!

I have just recently started having the same issue. When it happens my keyboard feels very warm. I keep my MBP on an elavated surface all the time. I have held down the power button for a few seconds then let the MBP sit and cool. This seems to help. If you get a different answer from the store will you share the info? The nearest store to me is >75 miles away (the one in town closed).
Thanks

  • My iMac won't deep sleep/hibernate after last update

I use my iMac almost everyday (sometimes except of weekends) and one of first things I did when I bought it I somehow turned on hibernation function which I use on my MacBook (RAM->HDD and power off). It's very useful for me since the next day I get everything where I left it and it uses no energy during the night.
Yesterday I finally had to reboot my iMac for some reason and decided it would be a good time to make updates which needed the OS restart anyway - it was one Safari update and I think one OS update. After my iMac rebooted and I pressed power button - instead of showing the screen in gray and progress bar of saving RAM to HDD my screen turned off and I could turn on my Mac by just pressing any key on the keyboard - which means it just went to sleep mode - not "deep sleep" or "hibernate".
I don't remember how I made hibernation work on my iMac. I tried the "pmset -a hibernatemode 1" trick, few apps like InsomiaX, SmartSleep (showing "hibernate only"), Deep Sleep widgets but none of them works. Do you know any other way to turn on deep sleep/hibernation mode on my desktop mac?
    PS. "pmset -g" returns:
    Active Profiles:
    AC Power -1*
    Currently in use:

My connection works OK but I have the same problem you describe occasionally. Seems to be an intermittent problem with the HDMI socket in my PB.

  • Deep Sleep - Is it normal to show a grey progress bar during boot?

I've just downloaded the Deep Sleep widget from Axionic Labs. So far, it works wonderfully.
I really like the idea of Deep Sleep. No power consumption, quick boot and same state it was before Deep Sleeping.
However, I noticed that when I power my MBP on (after Deep Sleeping) it shows the grey boot screen with a grey bar below being filled. Actually, it's several small grey bars being filled.
Is it normal to show those grey bars when your MBP is booting after a deep sleep?
    Here's a photo that I took of it: http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/2039/dsc00787uz.jpg

  • Turn off deep sleep / hibernation

    Hi all,
I do not want to let my MBP go to deep sleep mode every time I close its lid or send it to sleep by one of the other ways. Before the MBP I had a PowerBook G4 which went to "normal" sleep mode in 2-3 seconds. The MBP takes 20-30(!) seconds and I really don't need deep sleep.
Is there any way to turn this feature off in order to get a faster sleep mode like my PBG4 had?
    Thanks everyone
    Björn

Your MBP is not going into deep sleep. Normal sleep operation on the Intel laptops when you close the lid is:
    1. Write current state to the hibernation disk file.
    2. Enter "normal" sleep. Computer is not shut off and memory state is maintained (this is Safe Sleep.) Wake-up will be very quick.
In Deep Sleep the following occurs:
    1. Current state is written to the hibernation disk file.
    2. Computer shuts off. Memory state is not preserved. Upon wake-up there will be a delay during which the operating system loads the saved state from the hibernation disk file. Usually a progress bar appears on the screen as the saved state is loaded into RAM.
From what you describe your computer is set for normal sleep, not Deep sleep.

The reward system helps to increase community participation. When a community member gives you (or another member) a reward for providing helpful advice or a solution to their question, your accumulated points will increase your status level within the community.
Members may reward you with 5 points if they deem that your reply is helpful and 10 points if you post a solution to their issue. Likewise, when you mark a reply as Helpful or Solved in your own created topic, you will be awarding the respondent with the same point values.

  • HELP...   Since last week, I can not awake from sleep. After reading a review I downloaded Deep Sleep, but after the first deep sleep, my MBP (late 2011 with Mountain Lion), developed a problem restarting from sleep.

HELP...   Since last week, I can not awake from sleep. After reading a review I downloaded Deep Sleep, but after the first deep sleep, my MBP (late 2011 with Mountain Lion), developed a problem restarting from sleep. I straight away uninstalled Deep Sleep, but the problem has increased.
Now when I try to awake from sleep, a grey screen with the apple logo appears with a progress bar underneath it, which slowly moves to the forelast indicator, then it stops and a audio signal starts.  Three bleeps and pause.
Then when I press the on/off botton and restart the system, the underneath error reports appears with the heading  RAPPORTD unexpectedly failed.
    Can any one help?

  • MBP Won't wake from sleep but shouldn't BE asleep

    Hi,
I have a couple MBP's giving me trouble. They both are 2011 8,2 MBPs, running 10.9 and have Crucial SSDs installed.  Other similar machines and configurations are fine afaik.
They are set to not sleep when power is connected. The hard drives are set to not sleep.  Displays are set to go dark after about 15 minutes. Screen savers are set to never turn on.
Sometimes, about once every week or two, when the user goes back to his computer after the display has gone dark, nothing seems to wake it up.  The keyboard and mouse and mousepad do nothing.  Pressing the power button does nothing; holding it in for a few seconds and force-rebooting finally snaps it back to life.  I assume it's powered on and in some sort of deep sleep from which it cannot awaken since the power button does not work unless we hold it in.  While in this state remote desktop shows the machines as being "offline," not "sleeping."
I've seen threads about MBPs not waking but since these are set to not sleep in the first place, I'm perplexed.
I've reset the SMC and the PRAM (btw, does pram even do anything anymore? if not, why is it still there?)
    Thanks,
    Jeff

Does this problem still exist in the newer versions of the OWC firmware?
While my SSD is not an OWC, I've been having this issue with my OCZ Vertex 2, also based on the Sandforce chip.
OCZ's most recent firmware (1.32) has fixed the issues related to hibernation (i.e. "safe-sleep") but the drive still has issues waking from timed inactivity sleep.
I wrote about it on their support forums in this thread:
    http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/forum/showthread.php?86538-Hibernation-works-b ut-wake-from-auto-timer-sleep-problem-still-present-in-1.32
One of their support staff (who has been very helpful in ironing out the hibernation problems) replied with:
"I can tell you this new FW build has been fully validated by Apple at their labs, it may be possible your machine while fine with hdd may have an issue with newer ssd...or the line of macbooks with this issue are looking now for an efi update.
I will pass this back to SF but I suggest you also contact Apple and ask if a new EFI update is coming."
While my machine doesn't often sleep due to inactivity, it does happen. I am not a fan of the suggestion to set inactivity sleep to never. While this is a way around the problem, I don't consider it a solution—I would like the security of knowing that if I ever walked away from my machine on battery power for a few hours, I would be able to return to something that hasn't completely drained itself of battery.

  • My MBP won't sleep HD, and I have tried every solution already posted.

This is a persistent problem that began over 1 year ago, so information about how this unit might have been configured when it began is no longer available, but I have scoured this and google in general, using all search terms I can think of and still I can not pin point a reason my HD will not sleep.  I have been advised that there is a "process" keeping my unit awake, but I don't understand how that is possible when it won't even sleep when it is on the startup screen. So here are some particulars.....maybe you have some new thoughts?
I drive a MBP with a 2.4 Core Duo processor running OS 10.9.1, 5gb of mem, 750gb of storage with 500+ free.
    1) I made a clean install of system software and a clean upgrade to Mavericks (as a way to try to solve the problem which began when I was using Mtn Lion).  There is no third part software loaded onto the machine, yet.
    2) I have yet to launch iTunes, or iPhoto, or a Browser, no printer has been added.
    3) The result is the same regardless of user or preferences.  It does it in "safe mode".  The Terminal doesn't give any reason for aborting sleep using "pmset -g" command.  It just has a "10".  Bluetooth is turned off, notifications are turned off, sharing is turned off, airport is turned off...it's not even connected to the internet. The only software on the computer is the system. There are no peripherals.
    4) It won't sleep even on the start-up screen.  It won't sleep if I go through the menu or close the lid.  It will power off the monitor, and begin to wind down the HD, but just as it reaches the end of the sequence BING and the screen comes on again.  If the lid is closed, it will stay that way until the battery runs out, unless it's plugged in.  SMC and VMRAM resets not effective.
    5)  I have no files on this computer so I don't care about losing them.
    6) This computer did not have this problem using Snow Leopard, and even worked for a time using Mtn Lion and changing to Mavericks has not affected the problem which leads me to think it's not OS related.  It acts like a firmware issue, but as far as I can find there is no firmware upgrade for my unit.

    Hello Bobz,
Thank you for responding.  You require that I modify #2, above.  I have now gone on internet, opened Safari.  I downloaded etrecheck, restarted, waited for computer to cycle through sleep cycle (1 min).  After failure, I ran etrecheck.  Here are the results:

  • Hello... can anyone help, my late 2010 MBA's - OS X Lion 10.7.5 wifi won't turn on after a deep sleep

can anyone help, my late 2010 MBA's - OS X Lion 10.7.5 wifi won't turn on after a deep sleep.. thanks..!

    Hi John,
Thanks for the additional information.  What I would try next is resetting System Management Controller:
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
You can find the full article here:
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

If this still doesn't help, it would be time to take it in to be looked at.  You can setup an appointment at a Genius Bar by clicking on the following link:

  • Carrying around MBP in sleep or deep sleep

I can't seem to find a recent post about this issue, or one that answers my specific question, so here goes.
Numerous posts suggest that it has always been fine to carry a MB or MBP around in sleep mode (in a bag, to and from work for example). But the guy at the Mac store here in Taipei (not sure if he has the "genius" status or not) says that this my damage the hd, as it still spins very slowly during sleep. My first quesiton is, who's right on this point?
Second, other posts suggest that deep sleep is better than regular sleep if you don't mind waiting a bit longer to wake up, in that it saves the current state to hd memory instead of RAM. My second question is, does this make it any safer for carrying the computer around without shutting down?
Incidently, I found that the original Deep Sleep widget (Deep Sleep, last update Feb. 2009) doesn't seem to work with Snow Leopard, it just keeps asking me for my admin password, even after I enter it. I did find a new one that does, however, from Axonic Labs (Axonic Labs - DeepSleep Widget - Hibernate your Mac). Let me know if you have tried a different one, and which you prefer.
    Thanks!

Hi; I don't use Hibernation myself; left Sleep as is. Also; from System Preferences > Hardware > Energy Saver > Power Adapter, be sure that the box is checked by "Put the hard disk to sleep when possible." If you want to see what Hibernation mode is, and give it a try:
sleep state (DeepSleep widget can automate this):
from Rob Griffiths, Mac911: Check the current sleep state with Terminal, in Applications > Utilities. After you launch Terminal, the first step is to determine which sleep mode your Mac is currently using (in case you wish to go back to it). You can both view and change the sleep mode using the Unix program pmset. To see your current settings, type (or copy and paste)
    pmset -g | grep hibernatemode
You should see something like this:
    $ pmset -g | grep hibernatemode
    hibernatemode 3
Great, so your machine is using mode 3, whatever that might be. Well, thanks to the documentation for the handy Deep Sleep Dashboard widget, which puts your machine immediately into hibernation mode (so you don’t have to yank all the power sources to invoke it), we can tell exactly which mode is which:
    * 1 - Hibernation mode, with RAM contents written to disk, system totally shut down while “sleeping,” and slower wake up, due to reading the contents of RAM off the hard drive.
    * 3 - The default mode on machines introduced since about fall 2005. RAM is powered on while sleeping, but RAM contents are also written to disk before sleeping. In the event of total power loss, the system enters hibernation mode automatically.
Once you see which mode you’re presently using, make a note of it. To Change the sleep mode setting you use pmset again: to set to the hibernate sleep mode (which is mode 1 from the above list), enter this command:
    sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 1
Press Return, and you’ll be asked for your password. Provide it, and your sleep mode has been changed. If you ever wish to go back to your previous setting, just repeat the above command, but replace 1 with 3.
And yes, this means you can also set your machine to always go directly into hibernation mode by running the above command with 1 at the end. I find it much simpler, though, to use the Deep Sleep widget — and the widget also returns the hibernatemode setting to its prior value, which means that you can use the widget for hibernation, and still enter normal sleep mode the next time you simply close the lid. Note that restarting is not required for these changes to take effect.
Wrap up: Personally, I find the new sleep mode (3) a blessing, and I’ve left my machine in that mode. If you prefer the old (1) hibernate behavior, however, now you know exactly how to go there. Yes, it requires a trip into Terminal land, but it’s really not that hard to do. from Rob Griffiths
Also, RT76, carrying the MBP in a bag:
have you a hard shell custom pack?
Should the lid open accidentally while in transport, you will have a hot MBP with battery run down, when you need the MBP and take it out of the bag.
    I use this: Lidwake
    go to Utilities > Terminal
type in (or, copy and paste)
    sudo pmset lidwake 0
    then Press Return
it will ask for your password. type it in, Press Return.
Now, when your computer is sleeping with the lid closed, as you open the lid nothing happens until you press any key ...
    Where's the "anykey?" Homer Simpson
To put it back, run this: sudo pmset lidwake 1
WARNING: Improper use of the sudo command could lead to data loss
or the deletion of important system files. Please double-check your
typing when using sudo. Type "man sudo" for more information.

  • MBP won't sleep, but a clean Lion install does sleep

Since the install of Lion my old MBP, the MBP won't go to sleep.
I did a clean install of Lion on an external HD and it sleeps just fine. Therefore it must be something I migraded from my old SL.
Before I rebuild my MBP is there a plist file that I can delete that might help fix this no-sleep problem?
If not, then I'll start moving forward with rebulding my external HD and then tranfer it to my internal HD.
Thanks in advance for any help!!!

Thanks, I'll take a look. I killed all the pgms that my logon starts.
I also need to try to come in single user and see if that helps.
Comparing will be difficult since it looks like 10 pages printing out, but it's a good idea.
I was hoping just deleting a plist would fix it..I haven't rebuilt the system for many years, so I am also thinking about that as an alternative. I'll check the sleep function after every few apps that I add.

  • MBP won't sleep automatically.

My Macbook Pro won't go to sleep and it's driving me crazy.
I have been watching my processes closely and haven't seen anything that would keep it awake. The screen goes off like usual but it won't actually go to sleep on its own.
I can make it sleep by closing the lid or pressing sleep under the apple logo.

This is for a Mac that won't sleep.
Here is Apple's KB article HT1776 with their tips.
    Mine follow;
USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit.
If you've set your Mac to receive faxes, it may not be able to sleep. It might also have a damaged preferences file.
If you use your Mac for faxing, open System Preferences. click Print & Fax, click the Faxing tab, and uncheck the Receive Faxes On This Computer box.
If that doesn't work or you've never faxed on your Mac, go to Finder/Hard Drive /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com..apple.AutoWake.plist files (if your Mac asks, type your admin. password).
If the latter file isn't present in the folder, go to user name(probably your name)/Library/Preferences, delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file, and reboot your Mac.
    Hope this helps!
    P.S. One member here reported this (Michael Gleason);
"I have had this problem with my IMac G5. It is surprisingly irritating. LaCie's Silverkeeper backup software was the cause. By default it gave itself permission to wake up the computer to check if a backup was needed. Do you have this or a similar program installed which has scheduled activities including wake-up permissions as an option?"
Dave Hamilton provided this link, xlr8yourmac.com, to a member, which addresses failure of deep sleep with some users that updated and added new FireWire and USB card.
Also, here is Apple KB article TA2469 about PCI cards and sleep.
tomhorvat adds this; After few days of messing around I found out that I had desktop background (wallpaper) set to change every 1 minute.
After unchecking "Change picture..." in system preferences (under Desktop/Screen saver), my powerbook went to sleep all by itself.
Tristan Currier noticed this; "I have a Canon printer(shared) and my imac would not sleep. I opened up printer/fax in system prefs and noticed it said the printer was in use when it was off. Opened up the printer queue and noticed about 7 pending documents. Deleted them all and now it sleeps.
    Check the printer queue!"
Allan Jones says "sometimes there is Network activity: launch System Preferences > Energy Saver > "Options" tab and uncheck "Wake for Ethernet network administrator access."
    Good Luck!  DALE

  • MBP won't sleep

I came across this before, fixed it, and couldn't remember what I did to fix it. Now, my MBP won't sleep.
    What to do?

After several some time, I finally found several near-fixes and one fix that worked for me.
    1. Near-fix. Remove the Maglifte adapter, then sleep your MBP in the normal fashion. This works really well, but you have to remove the adapter before sleeping every time.
    2. Fix. When your MBP comes across a process it can't complete, your machine may be unable to sleep. Much of the time, it can be solved by changing the configuration in System Preferences. Check that your Sharing is toggled off; in Print and Scan, make sure there aren't any unfinished printing jobs. For me, the situation was caused by a conflict when I installed Printopia, which connects to wireless printers.

  • Macbook Pro Won't Wake From Deep Sleep

I'm having issues from my Macbook Pro waking from a deep sleep after my battery dies. If the battery dies and it goes into sleep, my Macbook Pro won't wake even if it's connected to power. I can remove the battery, hold down the power button, press keys and nothing happens.
I know the obvious thing is to not let the battery die, but I don't always work near outlets.
I've tried resetting the nvram and smc and nothing has worked. I'm probably going to bring it into Apple soon, but I really can't be without my computer for class.

Yes, I've tried that. It doesn't work. I've left the battery in, I've taken it out and left it out for a bit and nothing seems to work. It just turns back on whenever it feels like it.
I just had a sort of similar issue with a restart (no dead battery this time though). After my computer shutdown from a restart, it didn't want to boot back up. After holding down the power button and doing a few other things, I gave up. Then I closed the lid and set it down. It then decided to turn itself on.
I think I'm going to bring it in. I do massive amounts of design and web work on this thing and I can't have it messing up.

  • MacBook Won't go into deep sleep by itself

I recently noticed that although my monitor will go to sleep after the specified idle time the hard drive never goes to sleep on it's own. The indicator light never goes into "pulse mode". The strange thing is I think it worked fine before I did the recent updates.
I can put it to sleep through apple menu, CMD:OPT:DEL, or by closing the lid. Those methods all work fine but if left unattended it never goes into deep sleep and eventually drains the battery completly.
    please help.
    Thanks,
    Chris
    MacBook 13" 2 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

It doesn't seem to make a difference if it's plugged in or not. Closing the lid puts it into deep sleep. Unplugging or plugging it in while it's asleep doesn't seem to effect it.

  • Imac won't wake from deep sleep

This just started a week ago- in the morning after my Imac has been asleep for a few hours, I will try to wake it by pressing the keyboard or mouse and nothing happens- powerswitch is unresponsive, I eventually have to unplug and replug to start it up. During the day it will sleep and awake normally, it just seems to happen after long periods of time. The only thing I can think of is recently there i installed an Itunes update, could this screw things up? I have a (pre intel) IMAC running OSX 10.3.9 -1.6ghz and 512MBSo far I did the following:
    1. ran hardware diagnostic test from CD (passed)
    2. Zapped pram (command-option, p and r during start-up)
    3. File system check (fsck -yf)
    4. Trashed powermanagement.plist preferences
    5. Deleted system cache and repaired disk permissions
    6. Reset open firmware ( reset-nvram, reset-all)
This morning I tried to wake up the imac and the same response, nothing. Sleep light pulsating, but when I touch the keys, there is no response, the imac seems to do into a deep sleep. I had to unplug and replug again. Is there anything else I can try?
This all seemed to start when I installed the latest security update and newest Itunes, could this be a connection? If so, is there anyway to uninstall these?
    Imac G5 (pre-intel)   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   1.6ghz/ 512MB

Henry, there are reports of problems occurring with updates, I don't think you can un-install the Security update, and as far as reverting to an earlier version of iTunes, well, you could try and extract an earlier version from your receipts folder, but I would hesitate to mess with iTunes, you might lose your entire library.
What I would recommend is an Archive and install, or perhaps an upgrade to Tiger.
Let me know what you do,
    Miriam
