MBP won't fully start up...

I was using my 17inch MacBook Pro with no problems, shut the computer without turning it off, and when I reopened it it wouldn't wake up. I forced it to shut down by holding the power button, and now it won't fully start up. I press the power button, the sleep indicator light comes on, there's a few disk noises, but no fan or chime, and the screen never turns on.
I have tried booting in safe mode, smc reset, and pmu reset and none seem to have done anythin
I just got a new logic board about a month ago because of wifi issues.

Sounds like hard drive failure or your new logic board.
There is usually 90 day warranty on parts.

  • Macbook won't fully start up

Yesterday afternoon, I powered down my Macbook to go to class. When I got to class, I pushed the power button, heard the loud trumpet noise, went through the white startup screen, the blue screen and then my desktop background came up. But then, nothing! My dock won't come up, the menu bar at the top won't come up. I've tried restarting, but to no avail.
I recently installed Leopard - could that be the reason? Should I just attempt to restart from the disk?
    Thanks!

You were likely running at least Snow Leopard, if you were using Time Machine to back up. I can't imagine that you would have done any damage to your internal drive just by backing up - your internal drive may have been failing all along, causing the backup to fail as well.
Try a couple of things - first try starting up whilst holding down the option key - see if you've any drive available that can boot your machine, even if you were running Lion you should have a Recovery partition. If that doesn't work, and you were, indeed running Snow Leopard, find the SL installation disc or the disc that came with your machine and boot from one of them. Try running disk Utility to see if your internal drive can be found, verified and repaired.
None of this may work - but it's worth a shot.

  • L305d won't fully start, power jack also loose.

I have a L305D-S5934 satellite Laptop that won't boot, seems not to be seeing the HD. Upon startup, the DVD drive whirs a moment, the "On" light lights up, the fan starts and runs, but the HD light doesn't come on and the HD stays
silent (it might momentarily make a noise, I can't be sure). F8, F1, no effing key helps and the screen is blank.
It started this intermittently, but quickly progressed to never starting. The last time it started I left it running for 2 days, then let go to hibernate and now it won't start again.
Taking the battery out for 30 minutes doesn't help. Draining it and recharging it no good either.
I even put in a DVD of Darik's Boot n Wipe to see if I could get that to come up on the screen upon startup. Nothing, Nada, dark.
The recepticle for the AC power has been loose for a couple months...could this be part of it?
If it's the motherboard, howmuch are they and can a skilled novice replace it?
    Thanks for any help.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Toshiba does build tough machines, if you saw what I do and have done to mine you would heartily agree that I beat the heck out of them, but like any other laptop there are certain areas you have to be careful with.
The screen of course is fragile on any laptop, as are the hinges, but the most fragile point on any laptop is the power socket, it does not take much to damage them,  In fact it takes very little force to damage them, and once damaged they will only get worse until the laptop can no longer function.  it is one of the weakest points on any laptop ever made.
On some models the power socket is not mounted on the motherboard, some have wires that connect the socket to the board, and they are normally not hard to replace if the person knows how to solder. This is one of those places where size matters as smaller laptops are more prone to having the socket mounted on the motherboard than larger units because of the limited amount of space available in laptops.
Since yours will no longer start, but it is obviously getting power due to lights working on the unit, it is more than just a bad socket, but the loose socket may have started your laptops downfall by causing power spikes that could have damaged the motherboard.
The best thing you can do when you get another laptop is to make sure that the power cord is placed in such a way that nothing can get tangled in it that might pull on the cord and damage the socket.
Feet in power cords has probably killed more laptops than any other form of damage other than dropping them.

  • MBP won't re-start with full USB hub

Sometimes, when I choose Re-start from the Apple menu, my 2012 15" MacBook Pro w/Retina Display  just shuts down.
I have done a PRM reset, and a CMS reset, and that didn’t solve it.
I did an Apple Hardware Test, and it reported “No trouble found”.
So I unplugged the the Satechi USB 3.0 hub and re-started, and it worked.
Then I plugged the USB hub back in and removed all the peripherals from it, so its ports were empty, and Re-start worked.
Then I started adding peripherals one by one, and discovered when they were all plugged in (USB modem, printer, label printer and scanner), that's when the problems occurred. Re-start would shut the computer down, I'd hear the start-up tone, and then it would sit there, black, with no Apple logo. As soon as I unplugged the USB hub, the Apple logo would appear and re-booting would finish.
So my fix is to remove one peripheral (the USB modem) from the hub, and leave the hub plugged into the MBP. So far, it's working fine. Re-starts work great.
Here's my first question: is having "too many" USB peripherals plugged in at once known to cause start-up or re-start problems?
Second question: during all this testing, I found that the MBP's power button sometimes did not shut the MBP down until I held it for ten seconds. And sometimes (but not always) holding it down - even for ten seconds - would not start the MBP. I'd have to try 2, sometimes 3 times, to get it turned back on. This hasn't happened since I lightened the USB load, but might this be indicative of a power supply problem on the MBP, or is it likely related to the USB load?
Thanks in advance for any advice or answers.

Yes, having too many devices in the hub can definitely be a problem. The ports are not powered so they take power from the computer. Too many devices causes the computer to try and shut down the ports which it can't do properly in the middle of a restart. The total power the USB ports can draw is around 15 watts - 7.5 watts per port for two ports.

  • G5 won't fully start up, even after HD format and OS upgrade

My G5 froze 2 days straight when coming home from work and waking it from sleep, and needed a hard reboot to restart. The 2nd day it did not come back up, just the white apple screen came up with the progress wheel spinning forever. A couple more hard reboots and I had teh same white screen, but this time with a folder with the finder logo on it and a flashing question mark (?) over top of it.
I took this to mean it was some sort of system error, managed to bring it up in target mode on a friends imac, and backed up all my media before whipeing it clean and starting from scratch with the latest Mac OS (10.5). This seemed to work, but less than a week later the exact same thing happened again. Froze after coming awake from sleep, and then the finder/question mark thing.
Seems like a serious problem? Any ideas? Could it just be my hard drive is toast and I need to buy a new one?

    Hi-
    Any ideas?
A common cause of startup problems is loss of PRAM settings due to a weak PRAM battery. Replacement of the PRAM battery can resolve this.
    Replacing the PRAM battery
PRAM and NVRAM settings can also get muddled, and a PRAM/NVRAM reset could be all that is needed.
Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
Problems with power management; sleep/wake from sleep, start and shut down may be related to the PMU. A PMU reset would be in order in that case.
    Resetting the PMU
Could it just be my hard drive is toast and I need to buy a new one?
This is also a very real possibility.
If you buy a new hard drive, highly recommend the Western Digital WD6400AAKS 640GB drive. Fastest drive for the money, and cool and quiet.

  • Mail services won't fully start

After the last software update and reboot on our Mavericks Server, I found the mail services to be offline. Trying to start them up in the Server app doesn't work (I click the switch to be "on", and it just goes back to "off".) I managed to get the incoming services working by running "serveradmin start mail" from the command line, but the MTA and related services remain offline with no apparent rhyme or reason. I've tried rebooting the machine as well, but to no avail.
None of the logs relating to the mail services show anything that would suggest a problem, and nothing has changed on this server or its environment (eg. DNS still fine).
Any tips? I feel like this server is built on a stack of cards. After bad past experiences of upgrading OS X servers, I did a fresh install of Mavericks and Mavericks Server to have a fresh, clean environment. Apparently even that is not enough to make this a reliable solution.

I am handicapped. I have a 10.58 iMac that I tried to turn on but didn't realize my other hand

but not a full starting up. It tries for a couple minutes and then tries to reboot. Applle support told

    Help!
    Lee

    Hi Lee,
Does it boot from our Install Disc?
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

  • Mbp won't shutdown

mbp won't fully shutdown. if i try to shutdown via drop down menu or commands, it appears to be asleep only it won't wake up, i have to force shutdown and then restart. any suggestions?? help is appreciated

I'm having the same type of problem with my MacBook Pro. Ever since I upgraded to Leopard it won't shut down after I've been using it a few days, allowing it to go into standby mode when I close the cover. When I try to Shut Down, Restart or Log Off it tries closing applications but eventually times out with a message telling me to quit the application manually and try again. Eventually I get everything closed, then it says it can't quit Finder. Of course there's no way to force quit Finder so all I can do at this point is hold down the power button to do a brute force shutdown.
I tried the SMC reset http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319 but that didn't solve the problem.
Does anyone know what else to try?

  • MBP won't start up. Steps to take?

    Hi
    MBP, 10.6.8
After a few days of more and more sluggish starts my MBP won't start up. Not the wheel but the strips keep circling. The last time it started it took about 10 minutes to happen.
I'd like to do the reinstall where apps aren't touched, but should I do the hardware test first or just go for the reinstall? Or are there other procedures I should entertain?
Also, if I do the easy reinstall that will drop me back to a  lower osx. Can I immediately click software update and gete back up to 10.6.8 or will that be a problem?

Ok, first I got this message:

Disk utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up fil.
Ok, but how do I back-up my files when I can't see the drives? Would the hardware test provide any repair help? Can I attach it to my old MBP and start up while holding down 'T' to make it a fw drive?
In this install mode from my disc will I be able to choose the version that allows my apps to be saved or only clean install?
And when I reformat which format should I use?
    Any suggestions?

  • Why won't my MBP 13.3 Retina start up?

Why won't my MBP 13.3 Retina start up? Bought late 2013. First had problems waking it from sleep. Now when I turn it on, the gray screen comes up with the apple logo and then the wheel spins for a few seconds before the screen turns black. The computer has not been dropped or damaged, but it has been used in a tropical climate.

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
To restart an unresponsive computer, press and hold the power button for a few seconds until the power shuts off, then release, wait a few more seconds, and press it again briefly.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a startup failure is to secure the data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since the last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to start. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    a. Start up from the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.” The article refers to starting up from a DVD, but the procedure in Recovery mode is the same. You don't need a DVD if you're running OS X 10.7 or later.
    b. If Step 1a fails because of disk errors, and no other Mac is available, then you may be able to salvage some of your files by copying them in the Finder. If you already have an external drive with OS X installed, start up from it. Otherwise, if you have Internet access, follow the instructions on this page to prepare the external drive and install OS X on it. You'll use the Recovery installer, rather than downloading it from the App Store.
    c. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    d. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
If the startup process stops at a blank gray screen with no Apple logo or spinning "daisy wheel," then the startup volume may be full. If you had previously seen warnings of low disk space, this is almost certainly the case. You might be able to start up in safe mode even though you can't start up normally. Otherwise, start up from an external drive, or else use the technique in Step 1b, 1c, or 1d to mount the internal drive and delete some files. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation.
    Step 3
Sometimes a startup failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 4
If a desktop Mac hangs at a plain gray screen with a movable cursor, the keyboard may not be recognized. Press and hold the button on the side of an Apple wireless keyboard to make it discoverable. If need be, replace or recharge the batteries. If you're using a USB keyboard connected to a hub, connect it to a built-in port.
    Step 5
If there's a built-in optical drive, a disc may be stuck in it. Follow these instructions to eject it.
    Step 6
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can start up now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
    Step 7
If you've started from an external storage device, make sure that the internal startup volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
Start up in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know the login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you start up in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, the startup volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 11. If you ever have another problem with the drive, replace it immediately.
If you can start and log in in safe mode, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then restart as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the startup process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 8
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select the startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then restart as usual.
    Step 9
If the startup device is an aftermarket SSD, it may need a firmware update and/or a forced "garbage collection." Instructions for doing this with a Crucial-branded SSD were posted here. Some of those instructions may apply to other brands of SSD, but you should check with the vendor's tech support.
    Step 10
Reinstall the OS. If the Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Step 11
Do as in Step 9, but this time erase the startup volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically restart into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer the data from a Time Machine or other backup.
    Step 12
This step applies only to models that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery: all Mac Pro's and some others (not current models.) Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery, if there is one, is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a startup failure. Typically the failure will be preceded by loss of the settings for the startup disk and system clock. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
    Step 13
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

  • 2010 mbp won't start

    Hello Everyone:
MY mid-2010 MBP won't start and instead of the usual start up chime, I get a relatively short beep every few seconds until I turn it of. once in a while< like now< it starts but according to my teen, video is very choppy. i watch video but different  speed i think.  I use a host site to stream videos like american horror story, scandal, walking dead but no japanese anime - which is what my kid watches as well. But he also watches tv shows from a similar site but finds all videos in general-choppy.  I've seen some choppiness in the scandal video; i would have thought it would have been the Walking Dead. Can anyone tell me what they feel my system's issue is?
I have another issue but i believe they're completely unrelated so i'll post it separately (that's a hopeful invite for all your mac "doctors" who love to 'heal'.)
Thanks again, in advance, for your help.
    Regards,
    Ciaochiao

It's probably a failing graphics processor. The 2010 MBP are notorious for that: MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video - Apple Support

  • MBP won't boot - "GRUB_" - tried installing ubuntu on an external drive

so i tried installing ubuntu netbook remix onto an external drive, and upon restarting my MBP won't boot to my internal HDD, once it displayed "GRUB_" with a blinking cursor, but is otherwise unresponsive.
now i just get the folder with the ? on it.
I've run disk util, repair permission, repair disk and still no luck.
i can boot the MBP into target disk mode and see the HDD on my other system and all appears to be good, and if i boot to the install dvd, the HDD shows up under the "startup disk" menu, but it just doesn't boot.
any thoughts on how to fix this?

So I have an imac that I have had for about 3yrs. About several months ago, it started acting a little strange, it wouldnt pick up the mouse or the keyboard at times even thought they were plugged in properly to the usb port, sometimes both would work sometimes one or the other would work and other times they worked fine. About a month or 2 ago, I went to turn my imac on and it got to the screen where the little circular icon pops up implying it is loading, stayed that way for 2-3min then turned of and turned itself back on and did the same thing, made the apple sound got to the load screen turned of after 2-3min then turned back on, it has been doing that for the past month. What do I do?

  • Had a problem copying files, now MBP won't mount the external HD`

    Hi
I thought to put this in the MBP forum but since I thik it may be the OS I decided to post here.
I have a newer MBP with OS 10.5, I have an external LaCie c0nnected via eSata to keep my firewire 400 port free. I mounted another external HD to the Firewire port and the computer recognized it and I started copyig some files from the LaCie to the other external. Both formatted HFS+ Files were QT files. Somewhere during the copy process things locked up. I had to force quit the copy process, then coldn't restart the computer so had to ue the boot button to turn it off. Now I can't connect anything to the FW port. The MBP won't mount the 2nd external HD so I can get those files copied. I brought up my FCE and connected the external monitor to the FW port but now that doesn't work either and it was working this morning.
I hope I didn't blow the FW400 port! Is there any way to 'clear it' in case it's still looking for that HD? I don't kow if I'm asking theright way cause I'm really new to MAC's. I tried the Disk Utility to verify the disk and got an OK message. What else can I try?
    Thanks
    Allen

    Hi VK
Well I didn't blow the FW port. My video editing partner came over today to discuss a project we're working on together. He has FC Pro and I have FCE4. So I mentioned the problem to him cause it was his HD that wouldn't mount.
We had FCE open so I was showing him my external monitor fed via the FW port wasn't working either. He went to the View menu then to Video out and then to refresh video devices. BINGO! The external monitor started working. So it wasn't the FW port but apparently the FW was locked up or looking for the other HD. Now it's working. But I haven't tried connecting another external FW HD yet.
    Thanks for your help
