MBP won't power up

Sister-in-laws MBP won't power up
It sat for 3-4 months without being plugged in or turned on. When you plug in the power adapter the ring glows orange. Press the power button and nothing happens. Remove the battery and try again; nothing happens.
S-I-L took to the Genius Bar and they tried another battery. Nothing. They told her it was dead and she should scrap it and buy another. She did and and gave this one to me to figure out. Any suggestions, or should I donate it to the parts bin?

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
It seems to me that it would be well worth trying to revive it. Probably the thing to try first is to reset the SMC:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319
Now this is something the genius should have done, but it's possible it was overlooked somehow. It may well be worth another trip to a genius bar for another opinion. Try the reset several times.
But I think the power comes in at the left I/O Board:
http://www.ifixit.com/MacBook-Parts/MacBook-Pro-15-inch-left-I-O-Board/IF185-016
It may well be worth replacing this board if it is faulty for some reason.
Is there any history here--like maybe a spill to this area on the upper left where the mag safe connector is?
But I think it's worth trying to fix it. And even if you can't, it has valuable parts and could maybe be sold for parts to someone who fixes them.
Good luck!

after running an app store update, (Xcode) my mbp won't power up and the battery lights are showing flat even though it was on charge over night.
the update was taking a long time, and it had a message saying something like deleting old files.
i went to bed and left it over night.
when i went back this mornng it had powered down, and the drained the battery even though it was plugged in.
now i can not power up, and i have tried the smc reset.
    please help.
    many thanks.

This is the standard Apple support article for your situation.  If you cannot try another adapter to try, I suspect a trip to an Apple store genius bar is in your future.

  • Installed Lion on 2008 MBP, Won't Power Up

Istalled Lion today on my 2008 MacBook Pro 15",
    4Gb RAM ( Patriot Memory 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2 667),
    Snow Leopard (latest version).
However, now when I press the power button the computer turns on for a split second and then shuts down immediatley with a *beep* sound.
Battery was fine earlier today, and I have tried taking it out. Laptop is plugged in as well.
I'm not sure how to troubleshoot this as I can't get to any diagnostic tools.

I agree it may well be hard to understand.
But the symptoms you report are consistent with RAM issues. The Mac won't proceed beyond the point you describe until RAM has been verified and baci hardware tests complete - then you get the grey screen..
"Once the screen turns grey the hardware tests are complete, and the Mac looks for a boot volume.  Software now dominates  the startup process. ..."
    Which came from here.
Do you have the original RAM that came with the MBP??
If so try re-installing it to see what happens.
If it works well we know what the problem is.
If not, well there is some even more fundamental problem on the logic board.

  • MBP won't power up after shutting down windows. Nothing Nada Zilch Zero

I was using the windows side of my MBP. Whend I was done, I shut down using windos shut down. When I went to restart my computer, it did nothing. No sound, no spin no whine, nothing.
I've reset the power by taking battery out and holding down the power button.
I have green on the cord. What gives? How did this happen?
    Cheers
    Warren
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I've had a similar problem with the laptop before this one. I could tell you to try to take the battery out and hold down the power button for 5 seconds and then put the battery back, but that probably won't work. I could tell you to hold down the altcommandp or o and try to reset the ram, but that won't work. Your issue sounds like the power supply and your laptop is most likely dead.
If you bought it from apple.com you will have to return it and deal with the most incompetent customer service people on the planet. Took them 2 months to get my issue resolved.
I wish you the best of luck.

  • New MBP won't turn on unless it's on AC power

So, my new MBP won't power on unless it's plugged in. It had 80% charge left. The sleep/wake light was on, but the keyboard was unresponsive and the screen remained off. This happened out of the box, so I charged it, and thought that was it. This morning it did the same thing again. But NOW it seems to be working again. I'd hate for this to happen again, after I can return it. I've tried to replicate the problem but to no avail. Any ideas?
The wake on AC power is not an issue here.

I've had my Macbook for 2 months now. Yesterday VLC was whining that my CPU wasn't fast enough to run a video. Then about 1-2 houras after when I was opening a video in VLC it just froze. After wondering what happened a screen appeared telling me to restart computer and how to do it in 5 languages, the screen also had some color lines in it. OK so I shut it down and turned it back on.
Then it flashed blue screen for less than second and then the screen was all black. Fan was running and the led in front panel was on. Also it doesn't keep the umm..starting sound and doesn't respond when I press the keys (or at least num/capslock won't turn on). Now it just keeps doing that all the time I try turning it on.
I tried resetting PMU but didn't help. I don't have Tiger CD's here so I can't try starting it with them. I wonder what broke up, guess I'll have to take it to Apple authorized care.

  • Help! Macbook Pro won't power up!

    Hi, I have a new 2011 MBP 15" (1.5 months old).
When its up and running it works fine, and I'm able to shut down and restart it normally. As soon as I leave it off for more than a few hours (usually this happens overnight when I shut down the computer before going to bed)
The next morning the computer won't power up at all. When I press the power button I can hear something whirring/spinning and then 3-5 secs later the power just cuts off. The screen doesn't even light up, I don't get to hear the apple chime at all. Repeated attempts to power up the system get this same result.
I suspected it was due to cold weather (winter in Perth now). I find that every cold morning if i warmed up my macbook placing it near the heater, it will be able to boot normally after it has warmed up. But if ever the machine gets a chance to cool down, it goes into a coma? This happens when I put the mac to sleep and am away from it for more than an hour, it won't wake up!
This is so dissapointing to come from a product that comes at such a premium price. I hope I can get some help on this! It's really really frustrating.
I am reset the PRAM and SMC several times and they dont seem to do the trick. I ran the apple hardware tests, even in extended mode and they all detect no problems. Hellpppp

How cold is cold where your MBP is? In any case take it to an Apple store or AASP. If none availanle call AppleCare.

  • Trackpad died in less than a week, won't power up!

I recently bought the 27" ACD to use with my MBP and hence needed to get a Bluetooth keyboard and decided to go with the Magic Trackpad instead of the mouse. Man, the Trackpad is anything but magical.
In less than a week, it won't power up. Just died.
The first clue that it's dying was, after waking my MBP, the cursor seems to be not moving. Later the display shows connection lost. Re-starting the MBP didn't help.
Hence I decided to reboot the Trackpad. After powering down, that's the last I saw of the little green light. It wouldn't power up no more. Change of fresh batteries didn't help and calls made to AppleCare came to nought.
Finally, they decided to send me a replacement. But that's only after they have received the faulty unit. That's when I got ******. Asked them why they couldn't send me a replacement unit and collect the faulty unit at the same time, the person said it's company's policy.
This is the last I'd expect to hear from Apple! Note that in Singapore we dont have any Apple stores, only resellers. And I suspect this part of the operation is outsourced to some third party who chooses to have stiff policies in place. It was not after my insistent expression of my annoyance did they send me a replacement unit and said will pick up the faulty unit at a different time.
I read on this site that some owners of the Bluetooth keyboard experienced similar issues of not powering up and was resolved by throwing a home-made aluminum foil disc into the battery compartment. I tried that to no avail.
So right now, I'm waiting for them to pick up the faulty unit. But does anyone face similar issues with their Trackpad?

the person said it's company's policy.
Never that that experiene with anything I've shipped to them. Standard practice is that they ship you the replacement...FIRST, hold your credit card on file, while they wait for you to ship them the broken one. If they don't get it returned, they charge the card.
Note also, that you should be dealing with an Apple authorized service provider, not reseller.

MacBook pro won't power up! Acting asleep, black screen, fans don't fire up. Light nr catch pulsing, have taken batt out and reset but still blank screen, help!!

You may want to try this.
    Solution A
Start up your MBP while pressing Option (alt)|, Command, P, R until your hear 3 chimes rather than 2 as indicated by apple. This worked for me the first time.
    Solution B
Start your MBP while pressing Option (alt), Command, S
Hold until you see the computer automatic routine. When it finally stops type the following followed by "return":
    fsck -fy
It will probably indicate some problem related to "pcscd.pub" (should be 16 instead of 17). I haven't figured out what this means but somewhere in the Internet i read it is related to scan cards...
More importantly this routine will fix any problems with your HDD similarily to disk repair. When it ends, it will tell you if it has fixed/modified anything. If it has, run the routine again by typing again "fsck -fy"
Lastly, reboot by typing "reboot" (followed by "return")
    Solution C
Start up your MBP while pressing option (alt), command, S
hold keys until you see computer commands scrolling
when the routine stops type the following, each line followed by the "return" key:
    mount -uw /
    chmod 775 /
    chmod 1775 /
    reboot
After which your computer should reboot on it's own.
Each of the above has worked for me at one time or another. Once your computer has rebooted from the DVD you can reinstall OS X. If your problems started after installing 10.5.6, then I don't suggest updating until 10.5.5.
I'm very very disappointed with my 2007 MBP, it started to give me problems after 1 year. had to change the HDD and lately when I isntalled 10.5.6 it suddenly refused to start up., My previous Mac laptop (2003 866Mhz) worked for 4 years without a hitch. Ironically I've had to use it to access the internet and find solutions for my current MBP.
    best of luck

  • TS1365 MacBook Pro 2012 suddenly won't power up

My mid 2012 MacBook Pro just developed a strange power problem, won't power up at all. None of TS1365 above helps. The magsafe adaptor works fine on another Macbook. On the new MBP the green light slowly dims, and there are no lights showing at all for the battery when its button is depressed. Is this an Apple Store visit required?

    8. If you are still unable to start up your computer after trying each of these steps, schedule a service appointment with an Apple Retail Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. If you plan to visit an Apple Retail store, make a reservation at the Genius Bar using http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ (available in some countries only).

  • Fan won't power on

HI, I have a mid-2010 mbp. I was recently working inside it and accidentally disconnected the fan power source. I put it back together like it appears it should be, but the fan still won't power on and CPU temps are nearing the T-JUNCTURE temp of 105 C. Any suggestion?

You may try a SMC reset.

  • Mbp won't shutdown

mbp won't fully shutdown. if i try to shutdown via drop down menu or commands, it appears to be asleep only it won't wake up, i have to force shutdown and then restart. any suggestions?? help is appreciated

I'm having the same type of problem with my MacBook Pro. Ever since I upgraded to Leopard it won't shut down after I've been using it a few days, allowing it to go into standby mode when I close the cover. When I try to Shut Down, Restart or Log Off it tries closing applications but eventually times out with a message telling me to quit the application manually and try again. Eventually I get everything closed, then it says it can't quit Finder. Of course there's no way to force quit Finder so all I can do at this point is hold down the power button to do a brute force shutdown.
I tried the SMC reset http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319 but that didn't solve the problem.
Does anyone know what else to try?

  • MBP won't ' deep sleep'

    MacBook Pro Mid 2011 13"
    i5 2,4 GHz
    OS X 10.8.2
    4 GB RAM
Hi all! I have a problem with my MacBook Pro regarding the deep sleep mode. Normally when you close the lid, the MacBook goes into sleep modus. When you open it, you're back in a second. When you don't use the MBP for a couple of hours, it goes into deep sleep.
I wanted it to put it manually to deep sleep, so I downloaded the deep sleep widget.
    (this one: http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashb...deepsleep.html)
It went into deep sleep but when I tried to wake it, it got stuck at the loading screen. It then made 3 *beeps*, repeatedly and I had to turn it off and then turn it on again.
So I tried some terminal fixes, but now it won't even go to deep sleep anymore.
Here is what I did in this order:
    Removed the deep sleep widget
Terminal: sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0
    rm /private/var/vm/sleepimage
Set back to: sudo pmset hibernatemode 3
    Pram - PMC Reset
    Reinstalled OS X
None of this fixed the problem.
So now my MBP won't go into deep sleep mode, and I don't know why.
Is there anyone who knows how to fix this or provide me with any tips or pointers?
    Thanks in advance!

I have just recently started having the same issue. When it happens my keyboard feels very warm. I keep my MBP on an elavated surface all the time. I have held down the power button for a few seconds then let the MBP sit and cool. This seems to help. If you get a different answer from the store will you share the info? The nearest store to me is >75 miles away (the one in town closed).
    Thanks

Installed the update tonight and now my phone (Lumia 928) won't power up.  I've tried a soft reset, but the screen goes from the Nokia logo to a red Verizon screen to a black screen.  Tried it 10 times with the same result.  What's wrong and how do I fix it?  Help!

        Oh no Mr.Ected!
I can see if we can get your phone back on! I understand how important it is to have a phone. Have you tried this to see if we can get it back on? http://vz.to/1DZhteH . If it is still goes to a red Verizon screen and then to black we might need to do a master reset. While the phone is off try this:http://vz.to/1DZhXkU Be mindful this is the last resort because it will erase everything on the phone. If you have done back up assistant in the past you will be able to get you contacts back. Please let me know if you need any more help.

  • Please Help! My iPhone 4 won't power on!

iPhone 4, out of warranty coverage, won't power on.
        1.    It has about 60% battery before it dead, but suddenly it became black screen and not responsive (like powered off).
        2.    Whatever I did, like "holding the power button and home button together for 10-25 sec and then pressing the power button again" etc. it just won't power on, no Apple logo!
        3.    But I can seen the "emergancy call" screen when I plugged it with my laptop and it just told me "No Service" at the upper left corner (status bar of iPhone 4).
        4.    iTunes can see it, but only when it was in Recovery mode or DFU mode.
        5.    I also tried to restore it to factory settings in iTunes, but it always gives me an error with various error codes, like 2001, 2006, etc. I also tried restore it under Windows or Mac, but was out of luck too!
        6.    Finally I bought a iPhone 4 battery replacement and replaced the old one with the new one, but nothing changed as if it wasn't replaced its original battery.
        7.    It keeps rebooting at every 10 min or so when It was plugged into my laptop without any operations (pressing any buttons).
        8.    It can be "powered on" only when it was plugged into a computer. It will IMMEDIATELY be in "dead mode" as long as I disconnect it from the computer (like taking out a battery from an iPhone that is powered on)!
        9.    Everything worked fine before it dead, I don't know what happened to it! I am so frustrated!
Please help! Thank you so much!

    USB Problem, possibly bad Cable.
I misread your original post "It keeps rebooting at every 10 min or so when It was plugged into my laptop".
I thought you had a boot loop problem, but you say "rebooting when plugged into laptop" this is not the typical boot loop problem, because you had the iPhone connected to laptop.
Connected by what, obvioulsy a USB Cable, Error 2006, is most often due to faulty USB Cable.
Clean that Dock Port Very Well especially with Isopropyll Alcohol, get a good USB Cable, try a different USB port on computer, or try a different computer.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    -  Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since you have a hardware problem with the iPod. This is because as you said the same cable works with another iPod.
