MBP won't sleep when closed?

Hey Guys,
I'm not sure what's up (as I didn't have this problem with 10.4.7) but ever since I updated to 4.8, when I close the lid on my MBP, the front light won't pulse at all.
I can here the HD and stuff still spinning etc.
If I have iTunes playing, it continues to play when closed (and it never did with 4.7)
I checked that spotlight isn't indexing. I close all my programs and still it wont sleep.
When I put it in its case to go to school, its really warm (since it's been on) and my battery life is dying because of it.
I don't know what's up with it, or what I can do to fix it? I checked the energysaver settings and they're all right. I've tried resetting PMU and repairing permissions aswell.
Any ideas/suggestions?
Thanks in advanced.

See this thread for complete information on the files to delete. That fix is temporary. The recent firmware update for the MBP fixed the problem permanently (so far) for me, but not for others apparently.

  • MBP won't sleep when closing lid

Since I did the 10.6.2 update, when I close the lid on my MBP and that the power is connected it won't go to sleep, my "apple" is still bright with the lid closed.

    HI,
    Try resetting the SMC.

If that doesn't help, try resetting the PRAM / NVRAM.

  • Macbook pro not turning on after SMC reset. I have the following problem. Yesterday I noticed that my mbp 2011does not sleep when closing the screen. smc due loud fan and an X on battery symbol

Yesterday I noticed that my mbp 2011 dos not sleep when closing the screen cover. Today I Turner my laptop in. However the fan was working loudly and stayed loud. After Start I noticed an X on Battery symbol. Clicking on it, it showed 'no battery.' I found out that a potential solution for this problem was SMC reset. I also noticed that the leds on magsafe was not lightning. Despite this I tried to execute the smc reset as described on apple support site. Switching off, plugin the magsafe connector, pushed the buttons shift + alt+ ctrl + power. Then i pushed the power button, but my mbp is not turning on. I pushed several times on the power button but nothing works. The magsafe is also dark meaning the leds not lightning. Can anyone here help me on this ?

Problem solved by my own. But do not how :) magsafe again working and the laptop tooo

  • MBP won't sleep when charging

My 15" i5 MacBook Pro won't sleep when charging; a reset of the SMC solves the problem temporarily, but it always recurs. Interestingly, the sleep indicator light pulses as if the machine is sleeping, but I can clearly hear hard drive activity; the drive sounds like it keeps spinning up every 10 seconds or so. This is not an issue when trying to sleep when running on the battery only. Any advice?

I would just buy a wall charger for the touch and leave your MBP alone. If you really only wanted to charge it from the MBP, just make sure it doesn't sleep when plugged into the power adapter.

  • MBP Won't sleep when the screen/lid closes...

I have had my MBP for almost a year now and my AppleCare is about to expire...
Recently when I close the screen the computer will continue to run and operate as if it was never closed and will not sleep. I took it to the Apple store and they did an SMC reset which sorta helped for about 5 hours. Now it goes to sleep but will take almost a minute at times or won't sleep at all. I was told I would have to send my computer out for a couple weeks but I can't do without a computer. Please help me fix this or help me convince Apple to give me a new computer.

Run /Utilities/Console and click 'All Messages' top left then close the lid and try and put it to sleep.
If no dice open the lid and look at the Console messages - in particular look for lines including "sleepimage" and see what it says ?
I suspect there's not enough space left on your hard drive, or it badly fragmented, and the RAM sleep image can't be created or stored properly ...

  • MacBook Pro won't sleep when closed

So yesterday I closed the computer at the office and came home with it like normal and this morning the battery was dead which was unusual.
I plugged in and started up, no big deal.
Then I finished just now and shut the computer and noticed that the apple and the screen stayed lit. I can't find the place in preferences to tell it to shut down when closing the screen...
    Any help would be appreciated

    hi,
I have the similar problem with my mac book pro 17" after updating to Mac OS X 10.5.7 and installing Safari 4 - when I close it, it goes down in the sleeping mode, but only once. When I open it and whant to close it for the second time, it doesn´t - it´s freezing. Also, if I do it manually thrue the menue, it ist the same. It is freezing and the coursor is gone and only thing I can do then is to turn it off and start again. After that the same play start again - standby works only once. Any help proposal? Tnx and greetings from Vienna

  • MBP won't sleep when shutting lid

For about a week now, my Macbook Pro won't go to sleep when I close it.--It stays running, and gets hot.
However, using the power button to put it to sleep or choosing sleep from the Apple menu works fine.
    Any suggestions?

This issue has been covered extensively in Macfixit.
I would make sure though that you aren't running any applications in the background or have any third party peripherals connected when you close the lid. Make sure also the Energy Saver System Preferences Options has Wake from Sleep for administrative access unchecked. It is found in your Apple menu -> System Preferences.
If you find that you aren't able to stop it from happening, make sure your firmware version gets up to date, and your hardware test tests fine:

  • MacBook Pro won't sleep when lid is closed and battery lights won't work?

I have a 2010 MacBook Pro 15" and ever since I got it, the battery indicator lights wouldn't light up (not that big of a deal) and the computer wouldn't sleep when I closed the lid.
I've reset the NVRAM/PRAM, the SMC and verified/repaired my hard disk as needed.  But the computer still won't sleep when I close the lid (regardless if the machine is plugged into a charger or not).  Is there a known fix for this problem?  I've been searching through the forums and troubleshooting from advice that other people have suggested, but nothing seems to be working.  Any help is greatly appreciated!

This exact thing happened to me. Resetting the SMC solved all my problems. Here's a link to how to do it: Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) Hope it works!

  • MB: Won't sleep when lid closed and power connected.

Upgraded to Lion a few days ago and everything seems to be working great besides one thing:
When I close the lid on my Macbook (mid 2009) and the power is connected, the light remains on and the computer won't sleep. When i lift the lid everything is how I left it with no blink of the screen as it fires back up. However, when the power is disconnected, the computer sleeps fine when the lid is closed.
    How can this be solved?
    Thanks!!

OK, think I found my problem.
I had to send my laptop in for repair due to a faulty screen.  When I got it back it all looked OK so the first thing I did was install Lion.  Then I noticed the sleep issue so assumed it was Lion causing it.  I tried the pram, SMC other settings but nothing helped.  In the end I reinstalled Snow Leopard, same problem!  I tried from bootcamp and same problem, wouldn't sleep when closing the lid.
Doing some googling I found a post where someone has the magnet in the display fail, which is what contacts a switch in the laptop when you close the screen.  To test they suggest placing a paper clip on your screen bezel until it sticks to find the magnet, then finding where it locates when closing the screen on the laptop.  Then run a small magnet (i used a small fridge one) over this location on the laptop with the screen up.  I did this and instantly went to sleep!!!  WOOHOO!  remove magnet it wakes up, repeat and OK.  Close screen without magnet and nothing.
So its gone back in for repair to have the screen replaced again.

  • Macbook Pro running 10.6.7 won't sleep when lid is closed

My 2.2GHz 2007 15"Macbook Pro no longer goes to sleep when closing the lid. The laptop continually tries to wake, with the apple logo lighting up, along with the sound of the slot cd/dvd drive. If I leave the lid open, the laptop appears to sleep but the laptop sometimes seems to get very warm and if not plugged in will drain the battery down to nothing. The battery was replaced in the last 4 weeks but the problem existed before the battery change.

  • Won't sleep when I close the lid - HELP!

A while ago, my iBook G4 1GHz was knocked off of a table. The display was smashed and the whole display assembly was destroyed. I bought a new (used) display assembly and installed it. Worked fine, but when I closed the lid, the iBook woudn't sleep. I checked the placement of the magnet in the top case and I reset the PMU. Still no sleep. So I contacted the company that sold me the display and got a different one. Still won't sleep when I close the lid. I checked all of the energy settings, reset the PMU and even tried to force sleep with a magnet from another broken iBook. Still no sleep when I close the lid. It will sleep when I choose sleep from the Apple menu (OS Tiger) and when it sits for a while with the lid open, but not when I close the lid. Any thoughts?

My original problem has not been solved. The iBook still won't go to sleep when I close the lid. I have checked out any possible software causes, and have ruled them out. I have checked to make sure no keys were being pressed when I closed the lid. I took a magnet from another iBook top case and ran it down the side of the display to try to force sleep. No effect. I don't have any Firewire or USB devices attached, to that's not it. Apple, this board, PBFixit.com, and my local Apple-affiliated repair center have no idea why I am having this problem. Two display assemblies have experienced this problem. The original display had been destroyed in a drop. Could some internal damage, like maybe to the logic board, result in such a problem? It's odd that I am the only person out there who has had this problem. Weird, to be sure.

  • MBP Won't Sleep automatically. Sleep light on. Not pulsing. Drive spinning.

I can get my new MBP SR to sleep when I tell it to but it won't sleep when it's supposed to according to my Energy Saver preferences.
Instead of sleeping, the screen goes dark and the sleep light stays on at medium - no pulsing. I can hear the hard drive still spinning. I tried changing my screen saver to one of the original Apple settings (Computer Name) but that didn't help. I'm going to try throwing away my Energy Saver prefs.
    Any suggestions?
BTW - I took a closer look and I was a bit surprised at how many posts there are for the MacBook Pro on the Apple.com discussions. The most posts per day of any model by far. I know its a very popular Mac but this model seems to have more problems than we are able to solve. That worries me. Anybody else noticing this?
    -Todd

I had exactly the same issue and needed three hours to find out the reason. It was the Bluetooth Mighty Mouse. I had to disselect the *third option* in the *bluetooth preferences*. I have a German-language OS X so I don't know the exactly expression but it affects the ability for bluetooth devices to weak up the system.
If you have EyeTV 2: This application must not be running. If you have scheduled recordings that doesn't matter it will record anyway: It will wake up the Mac - record the thing - go to sleep again.
I have several devices connected to the MBP: Three external enclosures with harddisk drives (2xFW800, 1xUSB without sleep function), EyeTV 610, speakers - all those things did not prevent the system for going to sleep. All those devices can be left attached - up and running. The FW harddisks will go to sleep the USB not.
