MBP won't start on battery even tho its charged.

Hi,
I have a Mac Book Pro which I bought sometime in April. Just yesterday, when I unplugged the AC adaptor, the computer shut down, even though the battery says it is fully charged.
The green lights on the battery itself are all on.
When I try to start up my Macbook without the AC adaptor, it turns on for a second(i hear the superdrive turning), then it shut downs again. I just got this computer..whats the deal . Good thing I have apple care.
Oh, I tried to restart the PMU. I shutdown comp, take ac adaptor out, and battery out, and click on the power button for five seconds. Still no progress. I saw another thread on this..let me see if it'll help.

I report another case of the identical problem: The MBP will not start on battery alone, though it is completely charged as indicated both by the menu bar and by battery LED's. Furthermore, disconnecting the power adapter while running, causes the computer to go down immediately and completely, despite fully charged battery.
The behavior began abruptly after about ten weeks of normal use, though it was preceded in the last week or two by a few instances of the battery running completely down without a "low power" warning. Whether these are related symptoms, I don't know, but have read a number of reports of the latter problem.
I will request a new battery from Apple Care, but it sounds as if this may not get to the heart of the problem. Any further info would be appreciated.

  • MBP won't start up. Steps to take?

    Hi
    MBP, 10.6.8
After a few days of more and more sluggish starts my MBP won't start up. Not the wheel but the strips keep circling. The last time it started it took about 10 minutes to happen.
I'd like to do the reinstall where apps aren't touched, but should I do the hardware test first or just go for the reinstall? Or are there other procedures I should entertain?
Also, if I do the easy reinstall that will drop me back to a  lower osx. Can I immediately click software update and gete back up to 10.6.8 or will that be a problem?

Ok, first I got this message:

Ok, but how do I back-up my files when I can't see the drives? Would the hardware test provide any repair help? Can I attach it to my old MBP and start up while holding down 'T' to make it a fw drive?
In this install mode from my disc will I be able to choose the version that allows my apps to be saved or only clean install?
And when I reformat which format should I use?
    Any suggestions?

  • 2010 mbp won't start

    Hello Everyone:
MY mid-2010 MBP won't start and instead of the usual start up chime, I get a relatively short beep every few seconds until I turn it of. once in a while< like now< it starts but according to my teen, video is very choppy. i watch video but different  speed i think.  I use a host site to stream videos like american horror story, scandal, walking dead but no japanese anime - which is what my kid watches as well. But he also watches tv shows from a similar site but finds all videos in general-choppy.  I've seen some choppiness in the scandal video; i would have thought it would have been the Walking Dead. Can anyone tell me what they feel my system's issue is?
I have another issue but i believe they're completely unrelated so i'll post it separately (that's a hopeful invite for all your mac "doctors" who love to 'heal'.)
Thanks again, in advance, for your help.
    Regards,
    Ciaochiao

  • My iphone will not turn on even when its charging, how do i fix this?

ok so i bought a used iphone 4g offline. well i received it today and it does not work at all. I cannot turn on the iphone by the on/off button. Also I cannot turn on the iphone even while its charging, in fact it will not charge. As I Know Apple's policy on replacing the iphone, One must purchase a warranty. I Have not done so again due to me getting this iphone offline. Is There Any Tips On How To Get This To Work?

Not sure who you bought the iphone from (btw there is no "4g"), but if it was from ebay or some stranger, then I would get in touch with the person ASAP and ask about this problem.  You could also try using a different USB cable, since the current one MAY have a probelm with charging, as other users have experienced.  If nothing can charge the phone, then I would be very worried.
I assume you have tried the usual trick: reset.

  • NVRM error, now mt MBP won't start

Over the last 2 weeks, my MBP would crash (mostly during playing games). At first, I could just restart it and after a few restart it would be fine. But yesterday it crashed again after I managed to restart it (after another crash). But now it won't start up.
At start up, I would get the grey screen with Apple logo and then after 30 seconds or so, the grey screen gets distorted and generally the graphics are all messed up (and crash). I have tried booting up from Leopard CD, but it gets to a certain part and I get the Mac crash screen where it says the Mac has crashed and I need to restart.
Before it got to this stage, I have managed to restart it and after a restart, I got a noticed saying my Mac has crash and would I like to send report to Apple. So I did (3 times) and below is the error I got.

This sounds very much like this error http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377 but in this doc, nothing was said about not being able to start up the MBP.
The thing is I really need to boot up one last time to get some files off there, is there anyway I could boot up one last time? As I said before it won't boot up from HDD, not from CD, I tried booting up from external HDD but that system is 10.4 so it didn't show up.
Would appreciate any help so I can get these files off before I take it into repair!
    Thanks

I just had a whole day of kernel panics and screen flicker (video flicker - not backlight) yesterday. I had stuck and incorrectly updated windows on the screen. Soon after that the machine crashed. A few reboots later the MacBook would freeze after a few minutes of use and then finally it would only boot into the dimmed screen of death or a stuck spinning wheel (even when booting form CD!!!). Inbetween, I managed to boot it from CD, but the machine crashed during disk check and finished the check (no errors) the third time!
I followed all instructions (5 secs power button while without battery and power) did NOT help.
I disconnected battery and power supply and let the MacBook sit for a few hours. That helped and magically the machine booted as if nothing happened.
I ran the loooong hardware test. Everything fine. I ran the disk check everything fine. I am clueless.
Today I had the same crash again, but at least everything was fine after a hard reboot. It even crashed the attached iPhone, which suddenly showed the Apple icon ?!? Hard to believe!
Remark: many of the crashes did not result in a kernel panic, but just froze the computer.

  • MacBook won't start on battery/shuts down when power adapter is removed

    Help & advice needed please.
My MacBook won't start without external power, it gives a whir then a click then nothing. Once started up, if I remove the external power it just shuts off.
The battery shows at 98% & charging. Coconut Battery shows the following:
Current battery charge 4126 (& increasing as I type)
    Maximum battery charge 4200
    Current battery capacity 4200
    Original battery capacity 5200
    80%
    Battery loadcycles 111
Age of your Mac 6 months
    Charger connected yes
    Battery is charging yes
Does anyone have a clue why the Mac won't power itself on the battery when everything else seems like it works?
    Cheers!

As of today, my MacBook and I have been together for 40 days. Yesterday, while I was happily surfing (on battery), it powered down with no warning. Okay, these things happen. I plugged it in, restarted, and all seemed to be fine. Battery was about 70%. I did other things on my other machines and when it was about 90%, unplugged it and everything was good. This morning after using it unplugged for 1.5 hours it did the same thing, but decided to only work with the power adapter, not on battery alone. When trying to boot without AC, it would try to spin the CD and then fall back into off. When on AC, if I pulled the adapter, it would last two seconds and go blank. I made an appt. with the Apple store (Fashion Show Mall, Las Vegas) for 3:20pm. I got there right at 3:20pm and the monitors showed I was 5th in line. Store was fairly packed, at least one patron at every display item. Monitors also said the next MacGenius appt. was "approx. 8:30pm." Glad I made an appt! I was served about 15 min. later, during which time the monitors had changed to "No more MacGenius appts. available today, please try tomorrow." However, one guy came by without an appt. and was told he would be put on standby and to come back in 30 min.
Once I explained my issue with my MacBook battery, my Genius tried one of his batteries. "I just want to make sure it's your battery and not your motherboard." My machine worked fine, so he said "No problem, I'll have you out of here in 10 minutes." He got me a brand new battery, tested it, and put my old one in a box on the rear counter with four others. He pulled the serial number from the "About this Mac" area, didn't need my receipt for purchase date or anything. I had even printed this page: http://www.apple.com/support/macbook_macbookpro/batteryupdate/ to use as ammunition, but didn't need it. He did approve highly of my dashboard widget "iStat pro", available here: http://islayer.com/.
So the battery issue is a very common problem, and one that Apple has tried to deal with as painlessly as possible for the consumer. My Genius did ask if the battery showed an "X" in the icon bar, and I said no. Just wouldn't run on battery. On the way out of the store, one of the 3 MacBooks, in fact the one closest to the door, had an "X" on the battery icon. When I unplugged the power, it shut down immediately! The moral of the story is to contact Apple immediately with problems and give them a chance to fix them. Hope this helps others.

  • Lenovo G510 won't start when battery is on and it's fully charged

Hi there. I have my Lenovo g510 i5 notebook for 10 months, and my battery is wrong. I haven't used it on battery too much, but when I used it, I empty all of it and then charged it when it's turned down. Couple of days ago, the battery was empty I put it to charge, the orange light appears that it's charging, and day after when I put the battery on the notebook won't start, but with the battery and adapter start normally and show that the battery is 100% (fully charged). Why I can't use it on battery? Please help me.

    Hi Kocevski_91,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community!
As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with system not starting with battery in your G510 laptop.
Please remove the battery and connect only adapter and check for the issue, also try to perform a power drain by removing all the external devices connected to the devices and shutdown the system, now remove battery and adapter, press and hold the power button for 30 seconds, connect battery and adapter and check for the issue.
If still the issue persist, perform battery gauge reset, go to power manager select advance mode and select battery tab and click on battery maintenance under this option click perform under battery gauge option. Please perform and reply with results.
Hope this helps. Do post back if issue persists!

  • Computer won't start with battery in it...

have an Aluminum 15" Powerbook G4. I have had this since 2001, when I bought it. I recently updated to OSX. I hadn't used the computer in months and when I went to try and take care of the computer and update to OS 10.4.5 I encountered a problem. When I turned it on nothing happened. I had to turn it off, hit the reset button and then plug in the computer. THe battery was dead so I expected that. But what happened next puzzled me and still does puzzle me.
I managed to get the computer on by holding in the power button. I heard the familiar start up sound(the sound splash if you will) and when that ended I heard this incredibly loud, white noise coming from my speaker. The noise occured about four times. I was in the room with my wife and mother and they both looked at me like 'what the heck was that?"
Now I thought maybe this was an issue with my one battery so I uncovered my second battery and the same thing happened. It won't start up with a battery in there. I took the battery out and found that when it seemed to turn on just fine, I managed to get online and run a complete update. When it came time for the software required restart the computer started up and didn't make any noise at all.
I guess I don't know what to do now. I ran the diagnostics on the computer, from the disk utility and it seemed to come up clean. I don't mind not having the battery in the computer but I don't always want to fix the date and time and the like.
    THis is why I'm posting.
I also noticed tonight, when I was charging up the battery that I had to stop and take it with me someplace. When I went to turn it back on, with the battery in and it plugged in the noise came back on and I had to fix the date and time again.
Thanks to those who post, I really appreciate it.

not sure if this will solve your problem but you can try..
look at the battery exchange program if your battery is eligable for the replacement or take it to the local dealer so they can check if your board sound is ok.

  • New MBP won't start up

I have a brand new 13" Macbook Pro, just a few days old, which I have barely used or had time to set up yet. Last night I shut the lid and it went into sleep mode. The battery was almost full. This morning I opened the lid and it came on instantly as expected, but before I could do anything the screen dimmed and a message box appeared in the middle of the screen with the message that I needed to power down the laptop and then reboot it! This was in about five languages (I think - I never really took much notice before I switched off) When I tried to turn it back on, it simply won't start. When you push the power button, the 'power/sleep' light on the front lights up briefly then goes off again. The battery charge is still the same as last night i.e. almost full (all bar the last two LED's come on) I tried the SMC reset but it makes no difference. It simply won't power up. Obviously I will be taking it back to the Apple store, but I wondered if anyone else has had the message appear and why? And then fail to boot!

As I'm new to this forum, I'm not sure how it is supposed to work, but it is certainly not like others I have used! What is happening here? I edited my post and it shows at the bottom that it was edited, yet the edited post does not appear - it is still the same as the original! None of the added text appears.
I tried to add that there were no programs running and it was on battery when closed at night and when opened this morning. I've also tried it on mains power, but it makes no difference. It still appears to charge correctly judging by the power lead and laptop LEDs. It just won't turn on.

  • Sattelite L300D won't start on battery, needs adapter to start

    Hi!
I've have my Sattelite L300D since April last year, and suddenly my laptop won't start when the net adapter is not connected. Battery says 100% (Fully loaded) when I'm connected, and started the system.
Anyone any idea why my laptop's not starting on battery alone?
I already updated the BIOS to version 1.50 but that does not change a thing!
(My warranty is till April, so should I send it in for repair?)
    Thanks a lot in advance!

    Hi!
In your case I would go to a local ASP (authorized service provider) and let check your laptop from these technicians.
I think its a hardware problem, maybe the battery is faulty and so you can only start the laptop with AC/DC adapter.
    Bye

  • T21 won't start on battery only. Starts OK with charger, which can then be disconnected!

My Thinkpad T21 will not start on battery only. Indicators turn green (ventilator and disc try to run) for only less than a second and nothing more. If a charger/adapter is connected the machine starts OK, and then I even can disconnect the charger and continue to work. I only see a slight decrease in backlight intensity. This started after I connected a defective charger to the computer . I'm afraid some FET switch 'died'. I've found elsewhere suggestions to discharge a certain "overcharged capacitor" and tried it by disconnecting the battery and pressing the ON button continuously then repeatedly but without results. According to the service manual I should replace the main board, but before I do that I'm ready to benefit from my possibility to access SMD repair tools. I've nothing to loose.  Does anyone know the startup circuitry or point me to the possibly bad FET? Does anyone have the keyboard circuit or at least the connector's pin designations (or at the very least: which pins are wired to the POWER button)? Thanks, ANTIK

Repeating my response to your thread at TPF in case you (or anyone else hasn't seen it):
It does sound possible that one (or more) of the MOSFETs on the motherboard has died. As far as we know, there are no schematic diagrams publicly available for any Thinkpad. Assuming that you want/need to know the pinout designation for the keyboard connector in order to turn on the laptop without the keyboard attached, then you can use the simple port replicator (FRU 02K8668) to do that. Mount the laptop in the port replicator (without the keyboard) and you can then press the power button on the replicator to turn on the system. These port replicators are available on eBay, like this one:

There may be cheaper sources on eBay or locally.

So for the time untill i will buy a new one a just took it out and try to use the laptop without battery, just with the AC adaptor pluged in. But, just i said it won't start if i don't mount the battery. If i took the battery out while it's on there is no problem.
So, my question, beside what could be the problem, is if the problem will disapear with a new battery. I don't want to buy a new battery and still have problems.
    Thank you!

I updated it about two to three times and would still experience the same problem.
Why update 3 times?!? If you run an update, and it installs normally, that it - done!
There's a world of difference between running BatteryUpdate 1.2 and installing a new battery. In fact, if you read the linked page above, it states that the after you run battery update if you experience any of the listed problems you should contact AppleCare. Their first step will be to replace the battery. Could it be a logic board problem? Sure. Is that the first thing they'll do? No. By that reasoning, the first thing to try if your car fails to start on a cold morning is to put in a new engine...
So, to the OP, contact Apple - or better yet, if it's convenient, go in to an Apple Store. Get a new battery. If the problem persists, go from there. The advantage of taking it into a Store is that they'll test it on the spot.
