MBP won't turn on at all...

My wife's Macbook Pro has been overheating recently. Additionally, the battery will charge until the power adapter is green and it says it has a full charge, but within minutes of unplugging it, the computer is dead. We figured she had a bad battery or whatever, but now — out of the blue — the computer won't turn on at all. The power adapter is orange, but it randomly flashes green really fast. The power light on the battery stays at one cell.
We can't get it to turn on, regardless of what we do. Help?

Alright, we reset the system management controller by unplugging, taking out the battery, holding power for 5 seconds and turning back on, and that got it back on. We checked the health of her battery on the Apple menu and it says her battery is in good condition, which was surprising. I'm glad to know about the SMC reset if for no other reason than future reference, but surely it can't be a good thing to have to do that every time we want to turn the computer on...

  • My MBP won't turn on at all

    Hi all,
My Macbook Pro won't turn on anymore. My girlfriend was watching a DVD and it just stopped on her. With all my files inside. No matter what I do it will no longer respond.
The magsafe is green, so I tried resetting SMC but nothing happened, I have no indication that this is even working because the magsafe does not react when I reset
I am really not sure what to do because there is no firewire and I can't access my files.
To make matters worse I am currently in Shanghai for work and I don't think they have any Genius bar her.
Would really appreciate any idea at all. Thanks.

The green light on the magsafe will not respond as the Apple docs say when doing a SMC reset on that model. Instead, look at the little row of battery indicator lights on the side of the computer. When doing the reset they should go off and on in a pattern that I do not have in my memory (grey matter).
As far as retrieving your computer's data files, remove your drive and put it in an external enclosure or put it in another MacBook Pro of the same model and you are set, assuming it has not been corrupted. If you do not already have a backup, and I assume you do not (for shame ) you can buy a backup drive right now and you will have an external enclosure. Buy a backup drive with a SATA enclosure and then you can put your computer's drive in it. You will be able to get your data eventually this way.
If you were to take your computer to an Apple store now, you may or may not ever see your data again. They have no obligation to take care of it for you if they are only fixing your machine under warranty. It is your obligation to save that data. You do that by keeping your drive or copying it from your drive to another drive.

My Mac book pro won't turn on at all and when i put it to charge the light blinks, what should I do?

Yes if your model MBP has a removable battery.  If it does not:
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

Ipad 4 won't turn on at all, and is recognized by itunes as being in recovery mode- when I try to restore it stalls on the portion stating "preparing device for restore" and on the page it says "itunes is restoring the software." Been like this for a day. I read the restore notes on apple, but this seems to be a little more unique than the standard recovery issues. Any ideas as to why I seem to keep stalling during the restore process?

Couple of things I can think of before going to the Apple store.
First, if you can, power off the iPad. Then connect it to the charger that came with the iPad and plug that into a known good wall outlet. Leave it there at least an hour then try to reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart.
Also, you mentioned you have the latest iTunes. But it would be good to check the actual version. If the iPad is running iOS 7 you need iTunes 11.1 or later.

  • I dropped my iPhone 4 in water and now it won't turn on at all, will i lose all of my data, for example my photos and messages etc? and is there any way you can back the phone up without having it switched on?

If you had previously been backing up to iCloud (or a computer with iTunes), you would possibly have a backup.  That said, if you can't turn the phone on, you cannot create a backup of the device now.  Sorry.

Have you tried resetting your iPad?
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10 seconds).

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • MacBook Pro won't turn on at all.

I have a 13" MacBook Pro Retina (Late 2012) running OS X Yosemite beta 3 that won't turn on at all.
I imported a  few pictures from an SD card to iPhoto and then closed the lid when it finished.
A few hours later, I opened the lid and the screen didn't turn on.
It's been like this for almost a week now (6 days).
Pressing the power button doesn't do anything and I've tried resetting the SMC but it still doesn't turn on.
I also know that it's not a display issue because the CAPS lock doesn't light up.
Also, when I charge it, the charger becomes green, then orange. But I've charged it for more than 8 hours on the orange light, but still doesn't turn green.
Please help, I'm on holiday and there are no Apple Stores here

Some liquid has just spilled into your Mac. What should you do?
    Do
Immediately shut down the computer and unplug the power cord.
Remove the computer's battery if it's a portable Mac.
Disconnect any peripherals (printers, iPods, scanners, cameras, etc.)
Lay the computer upside down on paper towels to get as much liquid as possible to drip out.
Note what was spilled on your Mac.
Bring the computer into Apple store or AASP as soon as possible.
    Don't
Don't try to turn it back on. Liquids can help electrical current move about the components of your Mac in destructive ways.
Don't shake the computer (this will only spread the liquid around).
Don't use a hair dryer on it (even at a low setting a hair dryer will damage sensitive components).

You can work through the five 5 R's of troubleshooting to rule out the possibility of corrupted software.

It might also be a good idea to let the iPod's battery fully drain. Then charge it back up and restore it once more in iTunes.
Otherwise, it's likely a hardware issue with the iPod's LCD display, meaning you'll need to take or send your iPod in for service either via Apple or a third party repair service. Here is Apple's repair pricing.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/prices/
Note that they don't actually repair the device, but exchange it for one of the same generation, model, and capacity.  A third party service will actually replace the damaged part for a little less.  Google "iPod screen repair" and you should get a number of results to work with.

today my mac won't turn on at all...the light at the front is remaining on and at a constant brightness however the screen is still black! I'm not sure what to do next?

If you can log in blindly or using the flashlight method, it is possible your screen brightness somehow got set all the way to nothing.  I don't have my Macbook with me right now to test it out but I believe it may not be possible to adjust the brightness at the log-in screen so you have to be able to log in first (though I could be wrong on that).
