MBP won't turn on (sleep indicator light is flashing)

I just bought a new MBP. I was downloading from my USB stick when the laptop suddenly died. It won't turn on now. When I press the power button, the sleep indicator starts flashing incessantly.
I tried the stand technique of taking out the battery, removing the AC plug, and holding down the power button for 5 seconds. Nothing.
Any ideas?

I'm having this same problem. I'm an alaskan, so my view of heat may be skewed, but my laptop was sitting in the car for about 30 minutes here in montana - I really hope the heat didn't damage my brand-spanking new MBP )-:
I have a built-to-order MBP with 2GBs RAM, boring old high-quality apple standard RAM, so I don't think that's the problem ^^/

  • MBP won't start or read from optical drive; steady sleep indicator light

MBP went into sleep mode at some point during the day. Now I cannot wake it up. I had a steady sleep indicator light. I've tried everything in the book (holding down pwr button to shut down, then restarting; reset power manager; tried rebooting with OS disc #1 installed - which now will not eject).
When I press the power button, I can hear the optical drive start to turn, then it stops short. The drive will spin for awhile, then stops automatically. The computer fans come on, but that's about it. I can't reboot so as to run Disk Utility. The screen remains black. Starting with shift key pressed for Safe mode or pressing C also have not worked. Seems as if the computer is not getting passed the initial start up sequence. My wife also has a MBP but I haven't tried reading my computer via Firewire yet. Not sure that will help.
I'm a long way away from any Apple store (Kazakhstan) and would greatly appreciate some help. Thanks! Scott

This problem has been resolved. Problem was a faulty RAM module. I sent my MacBook Pro to an authorized service center; they had it fixed in less than 1 day. Works fine now. No problems since!

  • Sleep Indicator Light Adjusts to Ambient Light?

I just noticed in the last few days that the sleep indicator light on my UMBP actually pulses brighter/dimmer according to ambient light, even when the lid is closed and computer is asleep. Am I imagining this? How could this work?

I don't want to alarm you, but this is what was happening with my previous generation macbook pro 17, it turned out to be a sleep problem (would wake up when moved, or in bag) They replaced the lcd, the clamshell housing, top case, bottom case, logic board and left I/O board to no avail. Luckily I was still within my applecare, so it was replaced with a unibody. I would suggest that you take it in to the genius bar, they may try to tell you that it's some firmware update and that its supposed to do that now, but my new mbp sure doesn't do this, so I think they were just trying to get rid of me, but who knows.

  • Sleep Indicator light stopped working- any way to diagnose and resolve thi

The Sleep Indicator light on my Powerbook G4 12" 1.5Ghz has ceased to work. Just wondering if this is a sign of anything other than age and if it is possible to resolve at all?

This was a bit of a non issue it turns out. For some reason it started working again! The light has come back on! Not sure what happened there.

  • After upgrading to Mac OS 10.6.8, sleep indicator light remains off when I start my MB Pro

After upgrading to Mac OS 10.6.8, sleep indicator light remains off when I start my 15" MB Pro, but the computer works, and when I put it to sleep, the light flashes as normally. Any suggestions?

    Hi j,
An SMC Reset can fix some SIL issues. If everything is working fine . . . ? Anyway, it shouldn't hurt anything to try it if you want: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

  • Sleep indicator light not working

This isn't really that huge of an issue, but I've noticed that the sleep indicator light on my 366MHz Firewire iBook, which I recently bought on eBay and installed a few upgrades in, seems to not be flashing when the computer is asleep. At first I suspected a bad LED, so I swapped it out with a known-good indicator light from my previous 300MHz iBook. That hasn't seemed to work, and both display cables going into the motherboard appear to be securely attached. Oddly enough, I do recall one time when I put the computer to sleep and the indicator light worked (this was somewhere in the middle of my trying to get it to work), but I haven't been able to replicate it.

Have you tried to reset the Power Management Unit (PMU)?

  • Has anyone had any issues with the sleep indicator light?

I have a 15.4-inch MacBook Pro 2.8 GHz (Late 2009) and recently I have noticed some issues involving the sleep indicator light and my Mac sleeping.
I learned that the sleep indicator light is supposed to be on when you press the power button until the chime sounds and then its supposed to be recognized when the computer sleeps or when the lid is closed.
Lately, the sleep indicator light has not be working when the computer boots (it still chimes), when the computer shuts down or when the computer is sleeping. The computer still sleeps if you close the lid, but it acts up when you don't and use the Apple menu (Apple > Sleep), keyboard shortcuts (CmdOptionMedia Eject) or use the power button and select "Sleep". Usually when I use this method instead of closing the lid, the authentication login window appears and when I click "cancel", the computer sleeps.
But still the sleep indicator light does not appear any time. I'm wondering if I need to get my Mac serviced. I still have a 2-year Best Buy Geek Squad warranty on the MacBook Pro.
+It is weird that this is happening to me, cause my computer is only 1 year and 4 months old.+
Is there anything you know that would help fix this issue.

The microUSB cables are fairly common... most portable electronics today use them for file transfer/charging.
If the user does not own one, they can be purchased from most retailers fairly inexpensively.

  • Sleep Indicator Light

My computer locked up and I had to shut it down by holding in the power button. It then would not reboot. I ended up having to reinstall my operating system. Since then my sleep indicator light doesn't work. My computer goes into sleep mode, but the indicator light doesn't come on or flash. Anyone know how I can get the light to start working again??

Thanks for giving me the suggestion. I didn't get the opportunity to try your solution though. We had a power failure due to a storm today and I unplugged my computer. When I plugged it back up I decided to plug it into a power surge protector. When I booted the computer back up the light came on.

  • MBP won't turn on

My MBP won't turn on.  I've read several threads on the same issue but was confused on what could be the problem and possible solution.  I have a 2006 year model.  The computer powers up, fan turns on but does not boot up.  The screen stays dark and no apple sound at start up.  I would appreciate any instructions on how I may try to fix the problem myself.
    Thanks.

2006 model laptop, it's what? 7 years old?
It's had a good life and you got a good value as they typically only last about 3-4 years now.
I wouldn't waste any time or money on it, just open it up and take the hard drive out and use a SATA to USB adapter cable to a new Mac and use Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant to transfer content over.
Or you can opt for a Windows laptop and install MacDrive to read the HFS+ format and transfer files that way.

Was the restore done via iTunes?

If so then you may need to take it to Apple.

  • HT3205 Hi, 2011 MBP went on sleep mode and won't turn back on, charger and indicator shows green light, led in front on Trackpad lights on for 2 seconds then back off, MBP won't turn back on, what happened???.

MBP went off and won't turn on again. Charger shows full battery ( green indicator) although I know I was close to low batt befor going off. What happened???

Thank you for your detailed troubleshooting attempts.  Very helpful.  Sorry, I cannot read "logs."  My eyes just glass over on those things.  Hopefully, a knowledgeable user will come along shortly to decipher for you.
I noticed from the pics that your location setting is "untitled."  Have you tried the "Automatic" setting?  Run the diagnostic test?  Results?
    Try the basics first:
Change your router channel number.  Most times this works & is all you have to do.
Disconnect & reconnect your modem.  unplug it for about 10 seconds.  Plug it back in.  Do the same for Apple’s routers.  Wait for everything to reboot.
    System Preferences>Network
    Click the Assist Me button.
In the next window that pops up, click the Diagnostic button & do the necessary.

  • MBP 13'' Cannot detect battery & battery indicator light won't off

This morning, I found my mbp cannot detect the battery and the green battery indicator lights on the side of the mac won't switch off even if I turn off the computer and disconnect the power supply. Also with the problem that the mac cannot detect the battery, mbp cannot be switch on without power supply. I just got my mbp on Feb 2010 and I really enjoy it. These problems worried me a lot. So I went to apple retail store straight away. The staff has a quick look over the battery information on "About this mac" and updated the newest software, and suggests me to make a booking with Genius Bar. Then I went home. I did some searching on google and read some information about SMC and hardware testing. I did the hardware testing first. With a quick scan the computer provide an error code:
    4SNS/1/40000000:TB3T-128.000
And then I did the SMC procedure. This is where I solve the battery and indicator light problem. Now, the mac can detect the battery, the indicator lights return to normal and the battery can be charged. Seems all fine. But do you think I should cancel the booking with Genius Bar since the problem is solved? Or do you suggest to still bring into store and have a check? Thank you.

Reset the SMC (System Management Controller) and advise us if that helped.

  • My MBP won't turn on. The charger light goes green but then dims out before it goes out again

My MBP suddenly stopped working when I came back to it. I tried charging it with a couple of different chargers and different sockets. The charger light turns green but then slowly dims down before it turns off.
I tried all key combinations for starting up - holding the power key for long, Cmd+Opt+P+R with power button, Cmd+R with power button, but none of them work. The laptop won't turn on.
    What could be wrong?

If you are still under warranty call Apple Care. Make sure you get a case number as all repairs have an additional 90 days of warranty.

  • MBP won't go to sleep with lid open with Lion OS

I had this same problem with Snow Leopard and I fixed it somehow, but when I upgraded to Lion my laptop won't go to sleep when my MBP lid is open.  However, it does go to sleep when I close the lid.  When the lid is open, the display goes black, but the light doesn't pulsate.  If my power adapter isn't plugged it, it completely drains the battery.  I've unchecked "wake for network access", turned off bluetooth, and turned off sharing, but it still won't go to sleep when the lid is open.
Anyone having similiar problems?  Anyone fixed this problem?
    Please help.  Thanks!

I have the same problem.  I upgraded to Lion and now when I close the lid it won't sleep.
Also my CPU and Virutal Memory are constantly maxed out and I'm not doing anything different then I was doing before Lion was installed.  In Activity Monitor its showing my System at 40-50% and my user at 40-50% constantly.
Any have any idea how to fix this?

  • New MBP won't turn on unless it's on AC power

So, my new MBP won't power on unless it's plugged in. It had 80% charge left. The sleep/wake light was on, but the keyboard was unresponsive and the screen remained off. This happened out of the box, so I charged it, and thought that was it. This morning it did the same thing again. But NOW it seems to be working again. I'd hate for this to happen again, after I can return it. I've tried to replicate the problem but to no avail. Any ideas?
The wake on AC power is not an issue here.

I've had my Macbook for 2 months now. Yesterday VLC was whining that my CPU wasn't fast enough to run a video. Then about 1-2 houras after when I was opening a video in VLC it just froze. After wondering what happened a screen appeared telling me to restart computer and how to do it in 5 languages, the screen also had some color lines in it. OK so I shut it down and turned it back on.
Then it flashed blue screen for less than second and then the screen was all black. Fan was running and the led in front panel was on. Also it doesn't keep the umm..starting sound and doesn't respond when I press the keys (or at least num/capslock won't turn on). Now it just keeps doing that all the time I try turning it on.
I tried resetting PMU but didn't help. I don't have Tiger CD's here so I can't try starting it with them. I wonder what broke up, guess I'll have to take it to Apple authorized care.
