MBP won't turn on

My MBP won't turn on.  I've read several threads on the same issue but was confused on what could be the problem and possible solution.  I have a 2006 year model.  The computer powers up, fan turns on but does not boot up.  The screen stays dark and no apple sound at start up.  I would appreciate any instructions on how I may try to fix the problem myself.
Thanks.

2006 model laptop, it's what? 7 years old?
It's had a good life and you got a good value as they typically only last about 3-4 years now.
I wouldn't waste any time or money on it, just open it up and take the hard drive out and use a SATA to USB adapter cable to a new Mac and use Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant to transfer content over.
Or you can opt for a Windows laptop and install MacDrive to read the HFS+ format and transfer files that way.

  • New MBP won't turn on unless it's on AC power

So, my new MBP won't power on unless it's plugged in. It had 80% charge left. The sleep/wake light was on, but the keyboard was unresponsive and the screen remained off. This happened out of the box, so I charged it, and thought that was it. This morning it did the same thing again. But NOW it seems to be working again. I'd hate for this to happen again, after I can return it. I've tried to replicate the problem but to no avail. Any ideas?
The wake on AC power is not an issue here.

I've had my Macbook for 2 months now. Yesterday VLC was whining that my CPU wasn't fast enough to run a video. Then about 1-2 houras after when I was opening a video in VLC it just froze. After wondering what happened a screen appeared telling me to restart computer and how to do it in 5 languages, the screen also had some color lines in it. OK so I shut it down and turned it back on.
Then it flashed blue screen for less than second and then the screen was all black. Fan was running and the led in front panel was on. Also it doesn't keep the umm..starting sound and doesn't respond when I press the keys (or at least num/capslock won't turn on). Now it just keeps doing that all the time I try turning it on.
I tried resetting PMU but didn't help. I don't have Tiger CD's here so I can't try starting it with them. I wonder what broke up, guess I'll have to take it to Apple authorized care.

  • My MBP won't turn on. The charger light goes green but then dims out before it goes out again

My MBP suddenly stopped working when I came back to it. I tried charging it with a couple of different chargers and different sockets. The charger light turns green but then slowly dims down before it turns off.
I tried all key combinations for starting up - holding the power key for long, Cmd+Opt+P+R with power button, Cmd+R with power button, but none of them work. The laptop won't turn on.
    What could be wrong?

If you are still under warranty call Apple Care. Make sure you get a case number as all repairs have an additional 90 days of warranty.

  • HT3205 Hi, 2011 MBP went on sleep mode and won't turn back on, charger and indicator shows green light, led in front on Trackpad lights on for 2 seconds then back off, MBP won't turn back on, what happened???.

MBP went off and won't turn on again. Charger shows full battery ( green indicator) although I know I was close to low batt befor going off. What happened???

Thank you for your detailed troubleshooting attempts.  Very helpful.  Sorry, I cannot read "logs."  My eyes just glass over on those things.  Hopefully, a knowledgeable user will come along shortly to decipher for you.
I noticed from the pics that your location setting is "untitled."  Have you tried the "Automatic" setting?  Run the diagnostic test?  Results?
    Try the basics first:
Change your router channel number.  Most times this works & is all you have to do.
Disconnect & reconnect your modem.  unplug it for about 10 seconds.  Plug it back in.  Do the same for Apple’s routers.  Wait for everything to reboot.
    System Preferences>Network
    Click the Assist Me button.
In the next window that pops up, click the Diagnostic button & do the necessary.

  • MBP won't turn on (sleep indicator light is flashing)

I just bought a new MBP. I was downloading from my USB stick when the laptop suddenly died. It won't turn on now. When I press the power button, the sleep indicator starts flashing incessantly.
I tried the stand technique of taking out the battery, removing the AC plug, and holding down the power button for 5 seconds. Nothing.
    Any ideas?

I'm having this same problem. I'm an alaskan, so my view of heat may be skewed, but my laptop was sitting in the car for about 30 minutes here in montana - I really hope the heat didn't damage my brand-spanking new MBP )-:
    I have a built-to-order MBP with 2GBs RAM, boring old high-quality apple standard RAM, so I don't think that's the problem ^^/

  • Apple says "logic board needs replaced" because MBP won't turn on w/o SMC reset but I think I can fix it; can you help?

    Hello,
Less than a year after purchasing a brand new, early-2011 Macbook Pro (still covered under Extended Apple Care) and, sadly, only a week or two after finally upgrading to 8GB RAM, I returned to my notebook after taking a shower and watched it suddenly shut itself down. It has not been responsive to the power button since then (although, see below.. I think I can fix it).
Genius Bar took one look at the visible moisture sensor you can see underneath where the RAM sits and declared it water-damaged. While I agree that either a short and/or corrosion is causing my MBP to malfunction, I don't believe it should void my warranty because the problem isn't that I spilled something on it.1
I hope someone can give me some insight into fixing this myself. Apple says "the Logic Board needs replaced" (a common CS response, I've noticed) the water damage voids my Extended Care + that it'll be at least $1200 and several weeks. Here's the situation:
MBP will not turn on just by pressing the power button. However, MBP consistently (every time) powers up when I do an SMC reset.
I have it in verbose mode and it begins booting. But, it will invariably turn off without warning anywhere between 30 seconds and 8-10 minutes after powering up.

I have it in verbose mode and it begins booting. But, it will invariably turn off without warning anywhere between 30 seconds and 5 minutes of powering up.
Eighty percent of the time, it turns off during the pre-Xorg boot. However, I have also seen it fully boot, I log in, I'm able to peruse logfiles/etc. Safe Mode (holding shift) crashes early. Single-user mode makes no difference. PRAM/NVRAM/etc makes no difference. I can boot to the Recovery Partition but it turns off just the same (disk utility scan takes too long).
I haven't been able to really test the Internet Recovery because the hotel wireless takes too long. I did boot into Hardware Test and it passed the basic and extended tests (although it seemed to just be testing the RAM integrity.
I can boot from the optical drive with a FreeBSD 9 livecd and an Ubuntu 11.04 livecd. Of note is that the laptop shuts off consistently when FreeBSD begins the journaling services for the ZFS filesystem (every time).
Here is where this leads me to believe I'm at (I am not dogmatic here and would appreciate any corrections or insight):
It seems like there may be corrosive damage on the logic board but maybe it's isolated given the various consistencies in what's happening. It seems like whenever SATA is use, I lose power. When SATA isn't really used (the HW Test), the laptop has literally stayed on for days and days.
I want to get in there and clean up any corrosion with 91% isopropyl alcohol (9% distilled, non-conductive water).
I want to use a bootable OSX livecd with an "emergency console" so I can, basically, use boot options to step throught the boot process and see if I can isolate the problem.
Here is what I'm uncertain about and could use guidance:
Does any of this sound remotely reasonable to anyone who has been through this or am I delusional?
Any tips on identifying and cleaning any corrosion?
While I had made a bootable version of Lion via Disk Utility and a rescue disk with some third-party app, they are MIA and I don't have another Mac at the moment. Do I have any other options? Again, an install dvd is not exactly what I want -- more like a rescue dvd. I had read about some Apple Stores giving/copying bootable USB thumb drives like this to customers. But, I noticed that this is now on sale there for $80. I would use this like once and, ideally, could use my MBP to make more. $80 seems a bit much.
I should be able to step through the boot process in a way like what's possible with FreeBSD, no?
Anyone have any other specific troubleshooting tips?
I really, reallly need my MBP back as soon as possible. I'd really appreciate any wisdom and insight! Thank you,
    -ryan
To be totally honest, about 3 weeks prior I spilled some milk from cereal on the desk and a little bit got onto the battery. However, the notebook worked fine for the following weeks. I believe that the problems have been caused by ambient humidity ... I've been staying in a hotel that steams up the entire room when I take a shower. The windows are covered in water droplets so why wouldnt the MBP be affected? As noted, these problems began after I lingered in a hot shower.

    I don't think you have a case.
You can replace the logic board yourself if you are a DIY'er and save some money.

  • MBP won't turn on at all...

My wife's Macbook Pro has been overheating recently. Additionally, the battery will charge until the power adapter is green and it says it has a full charge, but within minutes of unplugging it, the computer is dead. We figured she had a bad battery or whatever, but now — out of the blue — the computer won't turn on at all. The power adapter is orange, but it randomly flashes green really fast. The power light on the battery stays at one cell.
We can't get it to turn on, regardless of what we do. Help?

Alright, we reset the system management controller by unplugging, taking out the battery, holding power for 5 seconds and turning back on, and that got it back on. We checked the health of her battery on the Apple menu and it says her battery is in good condition, which was surprising. I'm glad to know about the SMC reset if for no other reason than future reference, but surely it can't be a good thing to have to do that every time we want to turn the computer on...

  • My MBP won't turn on at all

    Hi all,
My Macbook Pro won't turn on anymore. My girlfriend was watching a DVD and it just stopped on her. With all my files inside. No matter what I do it will no longer respond.
The magsafe is green, so I tried resetting SMC but nothing happened, I have no indication that this is even working because the magsafe does not react when I reset
I am really not sure what to do because there is no firewire and I can't access my files.
To make matters worse I am currently in Shanghai for work and I don't think they have any Genius bar her.
Would really appreciate any idea at all. Thanks.

The green light on the magsafe will not respond as the Apple docs say when doing a SMC reset on that model. Instead, look at the little row of battery indicator lights on the side of the computer. When doing the reset they should go off and on in a pattern that I do not have in my memory (grey matter).
As far as retrieving your computer's data files, remove your drive and put it in an external enclosure or put it in another MacBook Pro of the same model and you are set, assuming it has not been corrupted. If you do not already have a backup, and I assume you do not (for shame ) you can buy a backup drive right now and you will have an external enclosure. Buy a backup drive with a SATA enclosure and then you can put your computer's drive in it. You will be able to get your data eventually this way.
If you were to take your computer to an Apple store now, you may or may not ever see your data again. They have no obligation to take care of it for you if they are only fixing your machine under warranty. It is your obligation to save that data. You do that by keeping your drive or copying it from your drive to another drive.

  • Help, MBP won't turn on!

so today I went to install the newest java update, and after installing it, i restarted it, however when i went to restart it, it all went black, but the backlit keyboard stayed on for a long time, then eventually turned off. now, no matter what i do, it won't turn on. the magsafe power adapter's light is now dim green, i noticed people's suggestions to try the system management controller, which i tried, but it still won't turn on at all. i have a lot of important work on it that i have deadlines for, so does anyone have any suggestions to get it up and running again? it's still under warranty, but i'd like to get it running so i can back it up again since it's been a couple of weeks since i've backed it up, even if i have to have it replaced or something.
    also it's the 2011 intel quad core i7, 2.2GHz
    thanks in advance!

    Hi...
    I'm going by your profile..
Since you are running Lion v10.7.3 you can use Lion Recovery to repair the startup disk if necessary and reinstall the Mac OS X.

  • MBP won't turn on or power up after battery drained.

I have an Intel MBP (approx 3 years old; is a model with a removable battery). The charge went all the way down (only one battery indicator light flashing), and now I can't get it to recharge and/or turn on. To complete things, the Magsafe indicator light is staying green even I know it's drained . . . Maybe that's why it won't charge? I've had it plugged in for an hour or two, and have tried it with two different power adaptors. Any suggestions on how to further troubleshoot or get it to boot or charge?
I should also note: Although the computer is about 3 years old, the battery is newer--maybe 1 year old (was replaced by a Genius Bar). Sorry I can't give you more details on the exact MBP model, but since I can't get the computer on, I can't get the exact specs. (Typing this from another computer.)
    Thanks!

    Probably your battery is death.
I would try to boot the MBP with the charger connected and without the battery, just to see if it boots. Using it without the battery for a long time could not be a safe pocedure. I remember some posta about, but just a check could not be dangerous if you cannot wait to have a new battery to test.

  • Please Help!  MBP Won't Turn On... T_T

So, my beloved MBP (2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo) finally bit the dust after years of service. Today, after work, when I press the power button, the sleep light turns on and I hear the faint sound of hard disk activation for a second. The screen stays black and there is never a startup chime. I've changed the RAM and hooked it up to an external monitor, but the monitor gets no signal and the MBP still does not turn on (same symptoms). After I leave it like this for 30+ minutes, nothing changes, but the laptop does get warm.
So, is the motherboard dead? Please help!!!

Although the lack of a startup chime bodes of other things, it may well be worth taking in the computer with this Apple article in hand:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
Your MBP has the nVidea 8600M GT chipset that is the subject of the Apple Repair Extension Program (REP) that the article details. Apple Stores and AASPs have a test gadget that will determine if the nVidea chipset has failed. If it has, the repair is free to you for a period of four years from date of purchase whether you have AppleCare or not. The repair consists of installing a new logic board.
As you are in NYC, there should be an Apple Store nearby.
If they determine the chipset has not failed, then you have the option of asking for a "Depot Repair." This is a flat fee service that pretty much fixes anything they find wrong as long as the case does not show evidence of damage. The fee is around US$300--much cheaper than a new computer. I do not know if the replaced DVD drive will negate your qualification for this service.
One late-breaking thought: if you use headphones, can you here the startup chimes?

  • ***? My MBP Won't Turn On !?!!?

I had my MBP running last night, and it go to its screen saver, and just run until it would fall asleep.
I woke up and could not get the MBP to turn on
It's plugged in, the light is green on MagSafe connector. Does not turn on.
Unplugged with battery in, still does not turn on.
Plugged in with no batter will not turn on.
It did turn on once when I was fiddling around with it all, but I forget how I did it. Even when it did turn on that time, I heard the apple start up sound, and the screen was messed up - the left was dark black which faded into gray on the right side.
I just got this laptop yesterday after replacing my other MBP which I suppose was a revision C according to the serial number.
This new one is a W8612 series laptop...

When I press the status indicator button on the
battery, no lights are lit up
It will not turn on if the battery is removed, but
    still plugged in either.
My 1.8Ghz MBP is exhibiting the same symptoms. Only difference is my battery shows full power. I managed to get it to power on once and removed a disk I had in the optical drive.
When it did come on the one time, it was as if it had been stuck in sleep mode - even though I had tried a PMU reset.
I hope the genius bar can fix my issue quickly. I've had the unit for less than a week!

  • MBP won't turn on or charge, working fine last night

I've got a 2009 MBP that has been working totally fine, I was using it last night and all was well. I closed the lid, went to bed, then came out this morning to a computer that wouldn't turn on. No light on the charging cable, no response from the power button, nothing. I then plugged my MBP into another charger from my wife's MBP-- nothing. Any help would be very much appreciated!

If you push the little battery test button on the side of the computer (About the battery indicator lights on MacBook...), what does it show you?
You can try Resetting the System Management Controller,  but you will most likely have to take the machine in to a service place for testing/repair.

  • MBP won't turn on/charge with any charger but only after a period of charger flashing orange/green

    Hi all,
I have a MBP bought in September 2012. Left my charger at home so I have been using my old 60W charger which is a little tatty and sometimes gave a 'Battery Not Charging' error message, but after a little fiddling would always work. To stop the inconvenience of fiddling all the time I had left it on charge for probably 24 hours, and it said the battery was charged. Last night took it off charge, left it for 10 minutes and when I went to use it the computer was switched off. When I tried to plug the charger it I just got green/orange flashing, and absolutely no life from the MBP.
Tried a couple of other chargers (none of which are mine) and nothing seems to work. Got my exams coming up and it's majorly stressing me out that I won't have it for weeks. None of the London Apple stores have appointments until next week. Help?!

Brenden thanks for the response, i actually went to an Apple Authorized center, no apple stores being in my vicinity, they solved the issue in less time than it takes saying it as resetting the SMC was not working.
apparently it was a short circuit from a bad power connection, computer is back and running again, nothing to do with OS X update or a bad charger.
    thanks anyways,

  • My 2009ish MBP won't turn on

I came home from a trip outside the country, and my MBP was, along with the house, quite cold. When I tried to turn it on, nothing happened. The little green dot on the charger shows that it is charging, but no matter how long I press the power button, nothing happens. I tried removing my battery, putting it back in again, unplugging it and re-plugging it and still nothing. It's had 12 hours of heat now so it's no colder or warmer than room temperature, but i just can't seem to turn it on.
A note: there is a button of sorts on the left-hand side of my MBP that, when pressed, fires up a little green dotted line. I have no idea what the purpose of this button is, but it DOES fire up a green dotted line when I press it, leading me to believe (perhaps falsely) that my MBP hasn't been totally bricked.

Those lights indicate the charge of your internal battery.
Reset your SMC, as described here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
If that doesn't work, you need to make an appointment at an Apple store.
