MBP X11 launch failure

After using the Migration Assistant to transfer all my files and settings, etc. from my PowerBook G4 to my new MacBook Pro and also after updating to 10.4.6 and all relevant software updates, I discovered that X11 hadn't been installed by default nor did it come over in the Migration process. So I pulled out the install disc and proceeded to install X11 using the provided install program.
However, upon attempting to launch X11, it bounces in the dock briefly, changes the cursor to the familar "X" cursor, stops bouncing, puts a triangle beneath the application icon in the dock and then... dies. No X-term window ever appears or even flashes briefly. It just dies and that's that.
Console reports a problem in the console.log with fonts loading but this isn't the source of the problem, I believe, because I get this same warning on my old PowerBook but it still goes on to successfully launch X11.
If I monitor the system.log in Console, I find that a kernel error is being reported every time I attempt to launch X11. It looks like this:
"kernel[0]: (57: coreservicesd)tfp: failed on 0:"
Apple support was pretty clueless on this as they don't really support X11 other than helping you install or reinstall it (I've done that twice now). There are a few X11 apps I really would like to get working on this spiffy new machine but this one has me stumped and so far I can't find any mention of a similar problem yet in the discussions.
Please post any ideas you may have.
Thanks much!

After reinstalling Tiger with X11 this time, I found that the behavior hadn't changed - X11 would try to launch but then die prior to the xterm appearing on the screen. I then had an idea. This user account was migrated from a 3-year old PowerBook so it's been around the block a few times. There are a number of "hidden" files in my home directory (.thises and .thats) that might be causing the problem. I created an admin account, logged in with that account and launched X11. It worked like a charm. So that narrowed the problem down to one of the hidden files in my home directory.
My first three suspects were the files .Xauth-OSX (it was dated from sometime in '03), .Xauthority and .xinitrc (zero bytes in size). The first file is evidently from XDarwin or something previous that is no longer used - it wasn't the culprit. .Xauthority is recreated as soon as you delete it and it's not the problem either. Deleting the zero-byte file .xinitrc solved the problem. Dunno where that file came from (it was dated with yesterday's date) but deleting it solved my X11 launch problem on my login.
Hope this info helps someone else down the line somewhere.

    Hi Rich,
I followed your advice. Here is what happened. The clip I've included is from the time I turned on the computer, opened Safari, connected to AOL for email, and then opened the posting from the Mac Forum. I haven't opened any pics, so not sure why I have jpeg failures. Then I opened PowerPoint.

The application "Flash Professional" could not be launched because of a shared library error: "<Flash> <CarbonLib> <CFMPriv_OpenScripting> "
The application listed depends on the one I am trying to launch. For example, when I try to launch Word the message is:

I have not made any recent changes to my system and do not know how to resolve. Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

I am having the same issue with my Mac Power PC G4. "The application Excel could not be launched because of a shared library error: 2<application><CarbonLib><CFMPriv_LaunchServices>"
I was reading your advice above. I don't have Leopard yet, so I was hoping there was a way to fix this problem with out moving to Leopard.
Also one more thing. This problem started after I did the newest Safari update. Not sure if that has anything to do with it, just thought you might need to know that.

    Hello,
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive & clear caches.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
    If that doesn't help...
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when trying to open AW6.

  • Application Launch Failures after Update: shared library error

Soon after installing the latest Security and Operating System Updates, I discovered that I could no longer run Microsoft Office. I get the following error message when attempting to open any of the components: Application Launch Failure The application "Word" could not be launched because of a shared library error: "3<Microsoft Word><CarbonLib><CFMPriv_CommonPanels>" I have tried reinstalling the updates but it hasn't helped. I can't reinstall Office because the same error message comes up when I try to open the Microsoft installer. Can anyone help? I'm stuck. Thanks.

    Again, thanks.
It's somewhat confusing. The folder /System/Library/Frameworks/Carbon.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/CommonPanels. framework
contains 3 items, a gray screen marked Common Panels with a small arrow pointing to the lower left edge, a folder marked Versions (which holds folders marked A and Current), a folder marked Current (which has a small arrow pointing to the lower left edge and holds a gray screen marked Common Panels and a folder marked Resources) and a folder marked A (which also contains a gray screen marked Common Panels and a folder marked Resources. When I click the gray screen marked Common Panels, I get a message that there is no default application specified to open the document "CommonPanels".
I'm not sure what all that means. Are there too many Common Panel screens? Does the small arrow have any significance? I've also discovered that, in addition to not being able to run Office, I can't install any new applications (same CarbonLib error message). If you think I need to archive and install the System, I can try to do so.

What dose this message mean exactly?. How can I fix this problem?
Is it possible to run Pro Tools 6.9.2 version on the Macbook Pro?
    Kind Regards

Hi Richard and welcome to Discussions,
if I read this chart http://www3.digidesign.com/index.cfm?navid=54&itemid=23639 correctly, then the answer is no.
6.9.2 does not work on Intel-based Macs and Snow Leopard 10.6
    Sorry

  • Mac G4 Problems with "Application Launch Failure"

I'm not sure if this is the right forum for my questions, so if not, please LMK where I should be asking for help.
I have a G4 running Mac OS X 10.3.9. In the last two weeks, I have had a number of errors involving an Application Launch Failure. This started immediately after I had the foolish idea of shutting down my computer for the night to save power. I selected Shut Down from the drop down menu, the computer shut down and everything seemed ok till the next morning when I started up. Since that time, I have had the application launch failure problem with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Graphic Converter, Yahoo Messenger, and assorted other programs.
The error message I get is for instance: Application Launch Failure The application "Word" could not be launched because of a shared library error:1<MicrosoftWord> <CarbonLib> <CFMPriv_CarbonCore> " or a variation depending on the program.
I have "restored" the computer, I have reinstalled Mac OS X 10.3.9, reinstalled the relevant Microsoft Office suite, and I still get the error message.
Does anyone have any suggestions (other than getting a new system)?
    TIA for any help.

Boot from the Install CD, but do not Install. Choose Disk Utility off the Installer Menu as your first action. Select your Hard Drive and choose ( Repair ). Repeat until it comes clean (or gets stuck). Then (Repair Permissons ) once.

  • Application Launch Failure -- Transport Monitor

Since reloading Tiger (and all the updates) early this week, I have started seeing this error upon restart:
    Application Launch Failure
The application "Transport Monitor" could not be launched because of a shared library error: "8<Transport Monitor><Transport Monitor><HotSyncLib.PPC>"
Huh? Perhaps this has something to do with my .Mac sync icon spinning forever on my menu bar...
Can anyone translate this foreign language and suggest corrective actions?
    Thank you!

Ok so im assuming you ran an archive and install. There should be a folder in Macintosh HD that says Previous Systems (n). n is the number of previous systems eg 1, 2, 3. Open that folder, go to users and open up the shared folder. You can copy its contents to your new shared folder in your new users folder. When you run an archive and install, your shared folder gets moved into the previous systems folder and a new shared folder is created that is empty. You need to fill up that shared folder. Try it out and see if it will work.

Hi, miek. Welcome to the Discussions.
Here is some general advice on troubleshooting shared library errors.
A shared library error, in general terms, implies a missing, corrupted, or incompatible application or operating system framework. Details on frameworks and shared libraries (heavy technical reading) can be found in the "Frameworks" section of the "Software Development Overview" chapter of the Apple Developer Connection document Mac OS X Technology Overview, and the Framework Programming Guide.
Causes for shared library errors include:
    • The affected application has been corrupted and must be reinstalled.
    • Running incompatible versions of two applications with interdependent shared libraries.
    • Disk or permission corruption.
    • Corrupted operating system installation.
    To resolve shared library errors:
    1. As a start, perform a general checkup by running the procedure specified in my Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption FAQ.
    2. If the problem persists and only one application is affected, uninstall, then reinstall the affected application. See my "Uninstalling applications" FAQ for important advice on uninstalling software.
    3. If the problem persists, multiple applications are affected, or the shared library in question is part of the operating system, then reinstall Mac OS X using the Archive and Install process. See my "General advice on performing an Archive and Install" FAQ.
    Good luck!

  • Application Launch Failure Message at Start up

When I restart or start my computer I get the following error message:
    Application Launch Failure
The application "Transport Monitor" could not be launched because of a shared library error: "8<Transport Monitor><Transport Monitor><HotSyncLib.PPC>"
I'm not sure what that's about. I click OK and everything works fine. Though I haven't tried to sync anything yet, and I don't know what the Transport Monitor is.
    Thanks,

If you want to sync items with your machine, reinstall Palm Desktop; if not, open the Accounts pane of System Preferences and remove the items related to Palm Desktop from the list of startup items for your account.

    Anyone have any ideas?

Oops, I should have mentioned that I've repaired permissions both from a DVD bootup as well as from the current hard drive. I reinstalled the last update.
I have Time Machine so I guess I could go back to a previous state if I knew what the problem was.

  • "Application Launch Failure" at startup -- why?

At startup I am now getting a window saying "Application Launch Failure" with a big red stop sign and white exclamation mark.
The text says, "The application 'Transport Monitor' could not be launched because of a shared library error: '8<Transport Monitor><Transport Monitor>HotSyncLib.PPC> '
What can I do to fix this? (I've run Disk Utility and Disk Warrior, but the window still appears.)
Thanks for any help you can give me.

From the error message, the application Transport Monitor failed to launch because it cannot find the library HotSyncLib.ppc. Perhaps you deleted or removed items related to Palm Desktop. If you no longer need this capability you can remove Transport Monitor from your Login items (see Accounts preference pane).

  • Application Launch Failure error message upon start up

I get the following message every time I start my computer. Ijust upgraded to 10.4.4 from 10.3.9 via 10.1 .
    Application Launch Failure
The application "Transport Monitor" could not be launched because of a shared library error: "8<Transport Monitor><Transport Monitor><HotSyncLib.PPC>"
Does anyone know what this is related to? I have tried repairing permissions with no luck. Does it have something to do with my Palm desktop software? How else can I try to get rid of it?
    Thanks.
