How do I connect my mid-2009 Macbook pro to my HDMI television and get sound?

Use a mini-Displayport-to-HDMI adapter and a standard HDMI cable to connect the computer to the proper HDMI port on your computer — the one that is paired with the separate RCA audio inputs (see the TV's manual for this information). And connect the headphone port on your MBP to those inputs with a cable that has a 1/8' stereo headphone plug on one end and two RCA plugs on the other. You'll also need to select the proper HDMI input in the TV's menu system, and you may have to select the headphone port as the audio output in the Sound pane of System Prefs on the Mac (or it may be selected automatically).

  • Mac mini late 2012, hdmi to Samsung Monitor no signal

mac mini late 2012, OS X ver. 10.9.2, hdmi to Samsung Monitor (S22C300) no signal,
but thunderbolt to hdmi adaptor can work, any fix for hdmi issue?

It would seem that if the Samsung monitor is not waking from sleep, then Samsung has not properly implemented the Wake on Signal that the Mini is sending out. There is nothing unique that Apple would do for one manufacturer. The signal is being sent out and that is why other monitors wake. Your Samsung, and mine, which are both probably different models are not waking when requested by the Mini. The best that can be done is to set the Energy Saving System Preference to not put the monitor to sleep. Use the Screen Saver as desired.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You must restore from a computer.
Get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:
Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
Reconnect the power cable (only for Apple TV 3)
    Open iTunes.
Select your Apple TV in the Source list, and then click Restore.

  • HDMI connection to Samsung TV - sound works, video doesn't.

I'm using an HDMI cable and the Moshi adaptor to connect my Macbook Pro (2010) to my Samsung TV. The audio works great but I am not getting video. This seems to be the opposite of what others are experiencing. How can I get the video to work, too? All suggestions much appreciated.

What you have is an extended desktop, which means that what you see on the external display is a continuation of the Macbook's display.  You will find that if you move the mouse off the edge of your laptop's screen it will appear on your Samsung TV's screen.  You can also drag windows from one to the other.
At the moment the Macbook's display is the primary display and the TV screen is the secondary display.  You can change this round in System Preferences -> Displays.  When the TV is connected you will see an additional tab - 'Displays' - within which you will see an image of two screens.  The smaller of the two screens in the image has a small bar at the top.  This bar represents the menu bar on the primary display.  Drag this small bar to the top of the larger of the two screens in the image.  This makes the external display, in this case your Samsung TV, the primary display and the menu bar and dock will appear there.  The Macbooks screen then becomes an extension of the TV screen.
You can set both displays to show the same screen by turning mirroring on.  The disadvantage of this is that the TV be at the resolution of the MacBook's screen and you won't be taking full advantage of the native resolution of the Samsung TV - which is probably 1920x1080, otherwise called 1080p.
Kenneth E's suggestion above, to close the lid puts the laptop in what is known as 'clamshell mode'.  This is a valid operating mode but relies on you having an external keyboard and mouse.  Closing the lid puts the MacBook to sleep and you will need to click the mouse or tap a key to wake it up in clamshell mode for the display to appear on the external screen.
So, to sum up, you are in fact getting video (extended desktop) and you're getting sound.  Everything's working as it should.  Hope my explanation clarifies what's going on for you.

make sure your ipad is not muted
make sure you volume is not all the way down

if you did and it don't work then it's likely an issue with the connetor
or the tv or it's settings

  • Mini-HDMI Port: Video OK, sound only works for iTunes

Let me start by saying, I'm pretty new to Mac so please be gentle with your answers...
I just got a new HD Samsung TV and have connected it to my Macbook Pro through the Mini-HDMI port. There are two HDMI inputs on my TV, DVI and ARC. I'm using DVI. The video displays perfectly but I'm having a little trouble with sound.
Once I went to system preferences and switched the audio output method to "SAMSUNG - HDMI" my iTunes music began playing through the TV speakers. I played a .wmv video from my hard drive; sound and audio all worked well. However, when I attempt to play anything through the Internet, Youtube, Hulu, Pandora, no sound... I still get video, and if I switch the Output source back to "Internal Speakers - Built-In" there's no problem. I don't know if it makes any difference, but I'm using Google Chrome as my Internet Browser.
I've double/triple checked the sites to make sure the local audio levels aren't being muted, and that doesn't seem to be the case. Is there a setting somewhere that references only Internet, or more specifically, Google Chrome audio Output levels?
    PLEASE HELP...
    Thanks

The "Front" channel isn't the same thing as the front panel. From the ALSA wiki:
"Front, Surround, Center, LFE (subwoofer) and Side (these are the names of the channels with Intel HD Audio, they may vary with different hardware)."
How many sounds cards do you have?

    Subdevices: 1/1

What are the other HDMI devices? The video card?
And have you tried googling the problem?

    Hello,
I am new to OS X and i have tried to adjust the sound when plugged to the secondary monitor through HDMI which of course didn't work.
I have been using windows and a linux for years now, and everything works seamless.
I believe that this could be easily solved by Apple as long as their are willing to do it. Having a virtual device for sound control is not that difficult.
    All the bests
There are two ways to 'solve' this.
Alter the volume before sending the digital signal down the HDMI connection, this means the signal is no longer exactly as it was originally. Apple's current (apparent) view is that this should be done at the end i.e. playback device not at the originating (Mac) end so as to minimise the number of devices making changes to the signal. Basically 'volume' is the amplitude of a an analogue wave form. (Where else do you think the term 'amp' comes from.)
Not to alter the volume of the signal at the Mac end but instead to send a signal down the HDMI cable to tell the end i.e. playback device to alter the volume, this uses a standard called CEC (Consumer Electronics Control), unfortunately at the moment no Macs support this standard - it has to be supported at a hardware level so a simple Apple software upgrade to implement this is not possible. I have previously logged an official enhancement request for this with Apple - the more people who do this the more likely it is to be added, since now all Macs include HDMI it might happen at some point.
As an addendum to option 2 above, see http://www.pulse-eight.com/store/products/104-usb-hdmi-cec-adapter.aspx this would however require software support in whatever application is being used. XBMC for Mac does support it.

  • Waiting to buy ... do I .. DVI, VGA or HDMI? (Samsung 23" TV)

    Hello,
    I'm currently very near to buying the basic Mac Mini model, customized to include;
    1.83GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    120Gb HHD
    1Gb RAM
My question is, I have a 23" Samsung HDTV and the ports on the back are HDMI and VGA with audio. I know the Mac mini comes with a DVI to VGA adapter but am wondering which is better for my situation, and why?
Also what type of cable would I need for the better option? Currently I have none. I have a 3.5mm jack audio cable, which has the same male connector on both ends. Would I need any of the following to get setup:
    DVI to VGA cable?
    VGA to VGA cable?
    DVI to HDMI cable?
I'd rather not use Apple's adapter, if possible. I've found straight connections to work better than through an adapter of any kind.
I'm trying to get everything ready, so that when it does come, I can simply plug in and use straight away, without having to go out and buy a cable before hand
Thanks for your help and advice,
    R-Fly

Since no-one has replied so far, I'll throw in a thought or two:
It might help if you post the model number of the TV, such that those with experience of it, or the opportunity to do some digging, can let you know whether the HDMI option is suited to your needs or not. However, you can be pretty sure that the VGA connection will work just fine, since by far the most common complaint has been with minis which do not correctly get ID from the display when connected via HDMI.
In your situation I wouldn't be so much concerned at using an adaptor - there's no reason to think they would not work perfectly well as long as they are firmly connected. Certainly I've used both DVI/VGA and DVI/Composite adapters with Mac minis for quite some time and not experienced any problems.
