MBP15 1.83 GHz Will Not Boot With 3GB Upgrade

I'm trying to increase my MBP's ram to the 3GB limit. This is a 1.83 GHz 15" model.
It will not boot with 2GB & 1GB sticks of identical mfg & specs. It will boot with one or the other...
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Stradioti

Hi
according to the Apple specs for the 1.83GHz mbp's - 2Gig of memory is the limit......
512MB (single SODIMM) of PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 memory on 1.83GHz configuration; and 1GB (single SODIMM) on 2.0GHz configuration; two SODIMM slots support up to 2GB
Crucial Memory says the same.

  • Windows 7 x64 will not boot with memory upgrade (P6N SLI Platinum)

I recently bought 4x 2GB sticks of Crucial DDR2 memory.  I originally had Windows 7 x86 installed, and with all four sticks in place there was no problem (except the memory limit for x86).  All 8GB of memory registered fine though.
I decided to install the x64 version, but setup would hang at every step and installation took over 12 hours - Windows 7 would not boot either when it was complete.  I removed all but one of the 2GB sticks and everything installed fine and it's up and running now.  If I put the rest of the sticks back in, Windows begins to load but gets stuck at a black screen.  I've swapped each 2GB stick in my system and they all work as long as only one is inserted at a time.
MSI P6N Platinum SLI (v1.7 BIOS)
    Windows 7 x64 Ultimate
    Intel Core 2 Quad @2.4GHz
    4x 2Gb Crucial DDR2 @ 800 MHz
    NVidia GeForce 8800 GTS 640Mb
I've done some google searching, and it seems like other people are having the exact same problem with the P6N boards, but I've never seen any solution...

The memorycontroller on that board is an oldie, got one myself  and it will probably not run @800MHz with all slots occupied on a x64 OS.
That contoller is only rated for 667MHz when running all channells fully occupied.
The fact that you could run it so under x86 has probably to do with the fact it didnt adress all the memory, but only 3.25GB max and thus it was stable enough.
Now you are running an OS that uses all memory and thus it can become unstable while its running at a too high speed for the controller.
I had the same and could "only" get the memory to work @750MHz tops, before it decided to BSOD or bootloop on me.
This is inherent to its design (from NVidia, they made the chipset) and cannot be overcome, but dont worrie yourself, the speeddifference between 667MHz and 800MHz is negligible and will only show up if you run benches, in normal day to day use, you will hardly, if ever, notice it.
But, do you really need 8GB???
If you do gaming, internet, office and other "light" work, i.e. normal homeusage, 4GB is already more then enough.
8GB is nice if you use cad/cam, photoshop and other memory intensive stuff.

  • More detail and a reply for the CQ50 - 130US will not boot with 8gb ram post

The specs, on the web site say that the  max memory supported is 3GB DDR2 because the notebook was built with the OS Vista(32 bit) installed so that’s why the manual has the 3 GB max. memory supported limit. The 32 bit OS can’t address memory over 3.12 GB.   To my mind that is not a spec. but rather a tech. writer who made a mistake and copied the sales literature.  With Windows 7(64 bit) Pro. installed the OS can address up to192GB of memory if the system supports it.  Other Compaq and HP Notebooks can deal with 8GB of memory installed. That’s why I would think HP’s could easily fix this with a patch or use one of their other BIOS’s.
The difference between 4GB and 6GB is that with 6GB system runs faster and the display quality has improved.  I have set the cache size to large and the executive paging is set to off in the registry. The menu(System Properties - Performance Options – Advanced – Virtual Memory) is set to automatically manage the paging file size.

You should keep it in the original; thread you started.

  • HP G62 Will Not Boot With Power Cord Plugged In

I have an HP G62 laptop that is about four years old. I've had a couple of problems with it before that were resolved relatively satisfactorily, however five or six months ago I started having a new issue. The laptop will not boot with the charging cord plugged in, whether there is a battery in it or not. Nor will it return from sleep mode (screen black, status light on the power button flashing) with the charging cord plugged in, whether there is a battery in it or not. It simply shuts down and I end up with an error screen the next time I boot up. I have tried other charging cords and it has been the same, however the cord will still charge the battery. This means I have to charge the battery, unplug the cord, boot up the computer. This annoyance is worsened by the fact that the battery  is old and unable to  hold charge for very long at all and I fear one day even the battery won't be enough to boot the computer. Can I fix the power cord issue? Should I buy a new battery? Or let my computer give up the ghost and scrounge for a new one? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

the charger input could possibly need replaced and/or the charger

  • Airport extreme will not boot with USB hard disk plugged in.

    Hi there,
I'm using the Airport Extreme Base Station, and I find that if I have a USB hard disk plugged into it, it will not boot up, it only hang-ups with an amber light, and stays there indefinitely.  It's not a terrible issue because it can be overcome by unplugging the disk then rebooting, but it's irritating, especially when I'm not home and there is a power temporary outage and my wife can no longer access the internet or I can no longer access my disks over the internet.
Is there a solution to this problem?
    Thanks,
    Marc

I'm going to have to replace the unit, as I'm unable to turn off DHCP services, which is wreaking havoc on my server based environment.
Considering THIS issue *AND* the major DHCP show stopper, frankly, I'm debating etiher the fire pit or tossing the damned thing into the intersection and watching it be reduced to the trash that it is.
Either way, there'll be 7 feet of pack ice in **** before I buy another Apple networking product.
I'll decide later, with a jaundiced eye, regarding our XServe unit. Might reformat it to Linux...

  • X79A-GD65 (8D) will not boot with 4930K or 3930K

    Short version:
My system will not boot but gets stuck at "09 Power on South Bridge Initialization"
    Detailed description:
I just bought this system and am when I tried to start it it got stuck at "09 Power on South Bridge Initialization". I have removed everything that is not necessary (gfx-card, HDDs, etc.) and only have the CPU and one memory stick inserted (in slot 1 as per the manual). I have also unplugged and put back all power cables from the PSU several times. I have also tried using BIOS A and B.
As I read on this forum that a BIOS update was needed for IVY-Bridge CPUs I bought a 3930K today to see if I could get the system up and running but it still gives me the same error code.
My board serial number is 601-7760-010B1312109204, assuming it is manufactured 1312 = December 2013.
I don't know the BIOS revision as I have never managed to get past the 09 status code.
Any ideas on what the problem could be?
Bought this monster PC as I have a delivery for a client in need of some RAM-heavy processing, so am really starting to feel stressed out about this by now.
    Thanks in advance!
    System details:
     - MSI X79A-GD65 (8D) X79 S-2011 ATX

     - INTEL 530 80GB SATA SSD MLC RESELLER KIT
     - INTEL 530 480GB SATA SSD MLC BULK (4 of these)
     - FRACTAL DESIGN INTEGRA R2 750W
     - ASUS GEFORCE GT 210 1GB DDR3 PCI-E VGA/DVI/HDMI SILENT
     - KINGSTON 64GB 1600MHZ DDR3 ECC REG CL11 DIMM (4X16GB) W/TS (two kits, 128GB in total, don't really need ECC but that's what I could find needing 16GB sticks)

even compared to just 10 years ago sales staff have became really dumb as there just hiring people who do not care about anything as long as they get there cut of a sale (usually all they know is basic Consumer parts they stock) and nearly non of them unless they specialize in that level of equipment will have 0 idea what they work with on a pro level part (ECC memory tends to be used on servers and Professional workstations so if they do not use that type of gear then they probably have no idea what ECC really is at all)!
also in that time some major things have happened especially with computer parts like the memory controller moved from the Chipset to the CPU same with the SATA controller , onboard GPU (thats now on the CPU and some have it some don't) and alot of other things and I guess that the people you dealed with had no idea the memory support has very little to do with the board (all the board can do is have BIOS Timing sets now and lists of parts it supports) and is now to do with the CPU alot more as it has the important stuff on it (there very close to a SOC (System On Chip) now)!
if you plan on building another computer remember to do some research yourself before you get a CPU as it is nearly the most important thing of all and they have different features tied to them and do not expect sales guys to have a idea unless there also a Technical support staff member too and work on computers that are of the same class your trying to make and have at least used the same level gear (usually if your doing something like that find a friend who is a computer nerd tell him what your trying to do and get him to help you choose all the parts)!
let me know how it goes when you get the Xeon and have it installed?

  • T61 will not boot with nvidia quadro 140m driver

    Hi all,
A couple of weeks ago, after allowing MS update to install some FTDI driver updates, my system will not boot up and hangs shortly after the initial vista loading screen. The screen goes black with some HD activity and eventually reboots. After trying a couple of restore points with no luck, I started to remove the latest driver updates and other software to my system again with no luck.
If I uninstall the nvidia driver and use the Standard VGA driver, it will boot and come up properly. I've done a bunch of web searches and searches on this site and can't find my exact circumstances. Its hard to believe that it could be a  hardware issue since it started after a software update, but since it hasn't been a problem for anyone else, I'm just not sure at this point.
I've tried earlier versions of the nvidia driver, removing other drivers and services trying to find a coincidence, but nothing seems to work. I'm kind of at a loss at this point. Does anyone have some suggestions?
    Thanks in advance,
    Dave

Also, does anyone know if using the Standard VGA Display driver without problems on this system means that the video card hardware is working? In other words, I'm trying to rule out a hardware problem with my nvidia quadro 140m card, so if the system works fine with the standard vga driver, would that mean the hardware on the card is ok?
    Thanks,

  • System will not boot with Seagate 3Tb expansion drive plugged in.

I have a  HP Pavilion HPE h8- 1214 Desktop ,  I recieved a Seagate 3TB expasion drive as a gift but when plugged in, the system will not boot. It turns on but thats it.  It never gets to the boot sequence. I have it plugged into the top 3.0 usb slot and have tried all of the other slots as well with no sucess. But if I leave it unplugged the system boots right up. I can then plug it in and it works fine. I have plugged it into my wifes HP All- In- One and it boots fine and works.  I have a WD 2TB drive that works fine as well on my system . I have searched Segates support for hours and all they say is to change the boot sequence. Have tried that, no go.  What they dont get is no matter what I do if that drive is plugged in it never gets as far as booting and reading the boot sequence. Please help. Thank you!

    Hi NcBunky,
Are you using Win 7 64 bit? Did you update the Texas Instruments (TI) USB 3.0 XHCI Host Controller?
I have an H8 1380t PC. Updated the TI USB 3.0 driver and had the same problem.
When booting the PC with the USB 3.0 external drive connected to the PC the PC would not boot. When booting the PC with only the mouse, keyboard, and a USB 2.0 external drive attached the PC would boot. Once booted you could attach the USB 3.0 drive and it worked fine.
Solution was to roll back (reinstall) the TI USB 3.0 XHCI Host Controller to the original factory installed driver.
System now boots with the external USB 3.0 drive attached.

  • T410 will not boot with new SSD

I've cloned my HDD to a new SSD, but it will not boot.  It goes into a Lenovo Think Bios splash screen / Black screen loop.  I booted off a repair disk and performed a repair, but it is still doing the bios loop thing.  This has happened with both an OCZ and a Kingston SSD.  Any ideas? Thanks...
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I'm going to venture a guess that the drive was not cloned properly.
The "new" drive must be in the machine's HDD bay, and the "old" one in the USB enclosure.
I always use Clonezilla for the rare occasions that I actually clone something, but Acronis should do just fine as well.
    Good luck.

  • 2008 mac pro will not boot with HD 5770 installed.

Does anyone have suggestions for this.  When I say it will not boot, I mean it will not respond at all to the power button if the card is installed (or at least if the power cord for the card is plugged into the motherboard.  This is a mac pro version 3,1 with 8 cores 2.8 xeon, 22GB ram, running 10.6.8.  Boots fine with xt2600 but will not boot if the 5770 power cord is plugged in. THis is an apple specific card from B and H.  Perhaps I received a bad card.  I have tried with and without the xt2600 installed and have tried in slots 1 and 2.  I do not have any other PCI cards installed.  Iknow this is not an "officially supported card" but it seems to work for everyone else.

Sounds like the ATI 5770 issue to me.
And 5770 worked on 1000s and 1000s of Mac Pro all models, like mine a 1,1 (there is even a thread of 160+ posts)
Where did you buy the cable and card, if from Apple and it is recent, exchange.
You are saying you never got to work...

  • External Firewire Drive Will Not Boot with 10.5.1

I have a Intel Mac Mini and I tried to install Leopard onto a external Firewire Drive. I have done this with 10.4.11 and all works well. The Mac Mini is running 10.5.1 on it's internal drive. I attached the Ext FW drive 320 GB and formatted it using 'Disk Utility' GUID format. I next installed 10.5.0 on the Ext FW Drive. I can shutdown and reboot with 10.5.0 using the firewire drive as the booting drive. I next installed the 10.5.1 update and when it completes it requests a restart, I restart it and it never boots back up just the Grey-Apple screen.
I have left it sit for a long time in this 'trying-to-boot' mode for a longtime because I know 10.5.1 may restart more than once on initial install. but nothing. I have also tried partitioning the drive into 3 40-80-180GB drives, but still the same behavior.
    Any suggestions?

Went through the motions on that. No positive results. I'm starting to suspect either the enclosure or one of the latest updates.
This what I have found to date.
The Enclosure " Vantec NexStar 3" extrenal USB 2.0 and Firewire. Model NST-360UF-BK
The Drive Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320 GB IDE Drive
I tried 10.5.0 on an Intel Mac Mini. (GUID format) It boots ok. Install 10.5.1 manually downloaded or automatic it will install the update but will no reboot.
(this part I have to verify a second time) tried the same enclosure on a G4 . I attached the drive formatted it for a PowerPC install and boot. Installed 10.4.10 but not the latest security updates, JAVA, and QT. It will boot ok from the external FW drive. I next install the latest Updates via the update app in the Systems Preference window. After doing the updates for 10.4.10 it will not boot.
So I'm suspecting either the enclosure or the latest updates

  • Leopard partition will not boot with Boot Camp installed

I am running Leopard 10.5.2 with Boot Camp running Windows XP on about 150 computers in multiple computer labs on my campus. My problem is that a few machines every couple of weeks will stop booting into the Leopard partition. The problematic computers will however boot into Windows every time. Is there an update or something that is causing the Leopard partition to stop booting? I run disk repair and I get "invalid node structure" which causes the repair to fail. My only solution is to partition the drive then re-image the Mac side and Windows side. This unfortunately is not happening to the same computers each time, I fix one computer, then a different has the problem and so on.
Does anyone have an suggestions? By the way, I am running Bombich's BootPicker v. 2.0. Could this be causing the issue?

This helped with a previous Windows issue but when I boot the system while holding "option" key, the Leopard partition does not show up. The Leopard partition shows grey out when I boot from an install DVD and I can not repair permissions or repair disk.

  • IMac will not boot with OS9 or OS8 Disk

    Hello,
I have a bit of a problem. I am trying to upgrade a friends iMac to 10.3.9. He had 10.2.xx on it. This is a slot loading blue G3. I went to do the upgrade from the 10.3 disks and it told me I needed a firmware upgrade. I got that tried to run it, but was told OS 9 is not on the system. No problem, I thought I could install that without incident. I put in my factory CD and all I got was a flashing folder and after a short delay, it booted into OSX. I then went to the prefs and told it to startup from the disk. Restarted. Short delay and then the flashing icon came up. So I decided to boot from Disk Warrior and format the drive. Rebooted with OS 9 disk and problem persisted. I tried the usual stuff, PRAM, took apart set SMU. No luck. Saw on a forum, that my battery could be low or dead. I purchased a new one set PRAM and the same thing happened. I am all out of ideas and am hoping one of you out there has had this happen to them and found a solution.
    Thanks

Are you sure that Mac OS 9 CD is bootable. There are some similar looking discs (white with a big orange 9) that are for "upgrading" and cannot be used to boot. It should say something like "full installation" on it if it is bootable. If it's a disc that came with Macs, not the retail disc, it usually needs to be the one that came with model.
Also, depending on the specific iMac G3 slot-loader you have, it may not boot it if the iMac originally came with a later version of Mac OS 9. For example, if the original OS was Mac OS 9.0.4, an installation disc with 9.0 will probably not work (because it is earlier). However, a 9.1 installation disc will work.
