MBPr 2012 Battery Life Degraded Rapidly

MBP retina July 2012 edition
8GB
2.3Ghz i7
OSX 10.10.1
Purchased refurbished in May 2014
Here is my my issue.  My battery life is currently at 94% health according to iStat Pro. A few months ago I was getting 8 hrs of battery life running safari and microsoft one note at 30-40% brightness and wifi on (no bluetooth or keyboard lighting).  Now I am getting 4.5 hrs with these same settings.  This drop in battery life has seriously affected my work day and really been annoying. I am wondering if there is some setting that got flipped that is killing the battery or if this is a battery malfunction that needs to be addressed at the apple store.
Let me know if you have any questions and thank you for the help!

Have you tried a SMC reset?

Based on the purchase date, your MBP is in the warranty period. Perhaps an evaluation at an Apple store genius bar is in order.
Ciao.

  • Macbook Air mid-2012 battery life issues -- a possible culprit ?

    Hi all,
I've posted and followed a thread regarding diminished battery life for the mid-2012 MBA, when Mountain Lion was released. I never could fix the problem, was contacted by Apple but that didn't solve anything either.
The troubles I was (and still am) having with my MBA were :
Battery life reduced by at least 33% when I upgraded to Mountain Lion from Lion, following a firmware update.
No change when I clean installed ML.
No change when I upgraded, and then clean installed Mavericks.
My battery, after 13 months of use, had its capacity reduced to 70-80%, and has now been stable for one year at 70-80% capacity. It now lasts approximately 3 to 4 hours, and has never lasted longer than 5 hours since I upgraded to ML, which was a few weeks after the laptop was purchased...
I've tried everything that was posted on the forums, SMC resets, etc. Now to the (maybe) interesting stuff.
I stumbled today on something interesting. I was researching my issue to see if people with the same laptop, that followed the same firmware upgrade path than I did had similar issues. Long story short, a forum post led me to something interesting, located at /System/Library/Extensions/IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext/Contents/Plugins/ACPI_SM C_PlatformPlugin.kext/Contents/Resources
DISCLAIMER Whatever you do, do not try to remove / move anything in this folder.
What is interesting is that my Macbook Air has the following identifier : MacBookAir5,2. However, in the above-mentioned folder, there is no MacBookAir5_2.plist, it stops at 4_2.plist and then goes on to MBP models. Now, the question that I have is could the fact that this plist is missing be related to my battery issues ? In the sense that without this file, the kernel does not know how to properly manage the power, read the battery status / thermal sensors ?
I would really love to fix this 2-year old issue that has been plaguing my laptop ever since I purchased it.
    Cheers,
    Hadrien

Edited to add a screenshot of the plists directory.

I leave my LithiumIon battery plugged in when near an outlet.  But I use it on battery down to 40% at least once a month.
Using Coconut battery (download from macupdate.com) you see my battery is just fine after 18 months:

  • Battery Life Degrading after upgrading to Mountain Lion.

    Hi Community Members,
Just after purchasing the Mid 2012 Macbook Air 13", the battery life was good 7+hours for usual use, including browsing, emails, vpn access etc. After upgrading to ML on 26th July 2012, the battery life depleted down to barely 3.5 hrs now, very disappointed with this experience barely after a few weeks of this new portable. Tried some workarounds for like the SMC reset, uninstalling Flash etc but no success. Don't have power nap enabled which a lot of people feel is the reason for the battery draining out. More concerning is that the FCC ( Full Charge Capacity) has dropped to 96% ( 6431 mAh) from its original 6700 mAh with the Power Cycle count as 24. Spoke to Apple Care today and has been advised to do a Battery Calibration and then get the battery checked up at an Authorised Service Centre. Apple claims it has nothing to do with the Mountain Lion upgrade. Will come back with more updates tomorrow.
Any workarounds or success stories with others ?? Very unhappy and disappointed with my new Mac !!!
    Cheers

  • Battery life diminishing rapidly! help!?

i have a macbook pro OS X 10.4.11 purchased august of 2006 with 309 cycles on it. the battery life in the last month has dimished rapidly in the last 3 weeks, like really rapidly, and now i can barely get 30 minutes of life out of the computer on the battery, as opposed to the 2 hours i was getting a month ago.
what should i do? is 309 too many cycles for apple to help me out? what are the terms for getting a new battery? how do i maintain good battery life? is it better to keep it plugged in AC as much as possible? is there ANY way to make my battery life longer??? help!!

With the number of cycles you have logged, your capacity is not surprising. It is also too large for Apple to offer a replacement. A friend had the same issue, with a computer roughly the same age, and was classified as a "heavy battery user".
The best thing to do is buy a new battery, and start doing regular calibration of the battery to catch the loss of capacity sooner. To reduce the number of cycles you may want to plug in when possible, but do use the battery, as they prefer to have their electrons moved.
I, for example, leave my MBP plugged in at home, but run on battery for the most part at work. If giving a presentation I will plug the computer in, as I will if the battery gets below 50%. After 6 months I have 24 complete cycles on my battery.

  • Battery life draining rapidly by wifi after ios 6 upgrade?

After upgrading Ipod Touch 4g to IOS 6 battery drains within a few hours when wifi is on even when device is not in use.  Has anyone else experienced this?

I've noticed a considerable decrease in battery life since upgrading, definitely.

  • Battery Life Degraded After Restoring from Jailbreak

I recently did a jailbreak on my phone and decided I didn't like it. I restored the phone to Apple factory settings and everything is fine except the battery. It will not hold a charge more than a few hours -- and that's on STANDBY, not actually using the phone or making calls!
Is there anything else I need to do to erase all traces of the jailbreak? Or is there anything I can do to improve my battery life?
    I've already done the following:
    1) lowered the screen brightness
    2) close programs when not in use
    3) changed auto-lock time to 1 minute (the shortest possible)

Very few applications run in the background - the number of applications that run in the background are very few and far between. An app being in the recently used apps bar or dock means just that - it was recently used. It does not mean the apps are running in the background.

  • Battery life degraded.

Hi guys, after 84 cycles i'm down to around 4600 if i'm lucky,
Now apple state that you shouldn't reach 80% within 300 cycles.
I did calculations and that would be ~4160 so apple said it was a perculiar issue and would not do a swap for the battery, but said i should take it to the local applecenter to be looked at.
By the sounds of it my chances are pretty low on getting the battery replaced right? i understand batteries are a disposable consumable that deteriorate but i bought this thing less than 6 months ago.

Yeah, that sounds like almost 80% and apple will have it replaced in that case
They said they should be replacing mine, i just have to take it in to the repair center because they want to see proof.
Apparently they haven't really heard of this issue much
While Battery Degradation is a normal thing, this is really only an 8% drop in capacity which ends up as about half an hour of normal load (~1000mah)
So i might just leave it and see how it goes, but apple agree that it shouldn't drop that much until atleast 100 cycles.

  • Why Is My Magic Mouse battery life draining rapidly?

I am using the mouse with a apple wireless keyboard which is 100% (battery) but the magic mouse is 83%.

    common
    Ive got 2 mac mini
the magic mouse is a tad of a battery hog.
My magic mouse (both of them) use batts. about 3X as fast or more than keyboard, for obvious reasons.
Mouse is perpetually sending signal when moving and gets a lot more transmission output than typing by a long shot.
Magic mouse is transmitting about 20X as much as a keyboard is, why would you wonder why its using more batteries?

  • Battery Life Deteriorating Rapidly

I've had my macbook air for 4.9 months (mid 2012). It's gone through 61 cycles, and is already at 89.7 of it's original capacity. Is this normal?

It would seem to me to be a bit abnormal.
After a few full cycle charges, what would be a 3 cycle average for your capacity(at a full charge)? That is much more relevant than a single snapshot, and would probably strengthen any argument made to Apple to address the question..

  • HT1766 Has anyone found a protocol that allows the 4S to operate beyond one year and to preserve battery life on this phone?

Please advise me as to any method to restore a 1 year old 4S, keep apps from crashing or disappearing. and to reserve battery life?  Information on WiFi malfunction would also be greatly appreciated. Sprint is unfortunately my carrier and I suspect a lot of resources are overtaxed to maintain connection.  Any advice for this phone, or do I just need to upgrade to a model with new reception technology?  Thank you.

Thank you, Chris, for the optimistic reply!  In terms of self-resolve I have done everything, including restore to original- to accomplish this I had to re- install Win 7 on a low use machine, as it could not be done with 8.1 Pro- attempt made with Apple advanced tech who also was unsuccessful at even getting the phone to restore with 8.1.  I was going, with lots of time and assistance from the tech, to send in for a replacement, until I made one last try with older workstation and without using backup- didn't want to inherit old problems.  The phone worked fine for a month or so and then reverted to the problems above.  Wi-Fi is not greed out, but won't connect to some sites and 3G is usually faster and more reliable - on the phone, not computers.  My data measured usage of data has spiked, I guess that is related to struggling for a Sprint connection.  Battery life is rapidly degrading, was okay after restore.
Upgrade thinking was to improve antenna technology. I have owned, personally and as a company, over 50 iPhones. I have loved them, but can't seem to get a straight answer from Apple on this one; which makes me consider options.  Has anyone resolved similar problems with the 4G?  Fix, wait for 6, switch carriers or switch manufacturers?  Is Apple switching it's focus to mass market, cheaper and less expensive?

  • Magic Trackpad Battery Life

I'm adding this question to the group in spite of the several existing inquiries that have been submitted over the year or so since the TrackPad has been introduced by Apple because none of them have received a suitable response to the original question.
There appears to be a common theme and after my 3rd TrackPad (yes three), I have drawn the conclusion that this is a design and not a manufacturing defect causing these TrackPads to consume battery life very rapidly.  In the past there was a firmware update that I thought would fix the issue but it never really did.  I can't seem to find any other details on this from the Apple site and hope someone from Apple are reviewing this to provide further guidance.
    Here's what I'm wondering:
Is there some way to help those of us who really enjoy using the TrackPad, to change some settings, or perhaps some CLI in Terminal to help reduce the rapid consumption of power by the TrackPad?
Is there an unadvertised firmware update that maybe we're missing?
Fortunately I had to move to rechargeable batteries because I just couldn't afford to keep regular batteries in the TrackPad.  But that said, has anyone have recommendations for a great rechargeable battery that maybe holds a charge longer than others?
Thanks in advance for your responses.
    Regards

Happens all the time.   The various means of reading battery strength are notorious for their inaccuracy.   I put a new pair of rechargeable batteries in (100%) this morning and they are already down to 80% after about four hours work.   But that of course is the value of the rechargeable batteries; you take out the expired ones and re-charge them immediately, so you always have batteries available.
If you have a few £s/$s/€s on hand, why not buy a respectable battery reader and compare the differences.

  • Just bought a mid 2012 13 in macbook pro. Battery life is only 3 hours. Thoughts?

Just bought a mid 2012 13 in macbook pro. Battery life is only 3 hours. I was under the impression that it would last 7 hours. This is with normal internet browsing and text editing. my brightness is not all the up and bluetooth is off. Thoughts?

  • Battery LIfe in Macbook Pro 2012- complete joke

Hi All, just got a new macbook pro for xmas. It was a refurbushed one from July 2012 which comes with warranty etc etc.
Firstly am pretty annoyed as think Appple is really going downhill fast (iphone 5 have seem issues with battery but service in hk ***). The battery on this new computer has a complete life span on 2.42hours. This is with only this webpage open so thus my concern. It is just crap. That cant be right i am guessing as the website says up to 7hrs.
I timed it to take 16% of the full charged battery within 20mins using nothing but very light web browser.
I used to have a macbook pro 2010 which was great but this just seems rubbish. I live in hong kong though and find any issue you have is not recieved with the neccessary service that i am used to in my home country in Australia. They will just tell me to take it to the repair centre. Personally think this is unacceptable as why should i have to do all the leg work on there new computer which is faulty.
Is this a common problem re battery? Also am i in my rights to the peopleat the store that it simply isnt god enough and they should do the legwork rather then me having to take it to the service centre.(i brought it off the apple online store)

Yes the 2010 MBPs were the most efficient MBPs made in terms of battery life (and the 10.6 OS).  I have one.  The subsequent quad core/10.7 OS changed that some what with a lesser battery life span.  I also have a 2011 MBP.
I would say that 2,42 hrs would be disappointing to me as well for light duty CPU loads.  Now understand that Apples battery life claims are based on Ebenezer Scrooge setting.  My rule of thumb that for my 'normal' use will be about 2/3s of Apples advertised times.
I do note your general satisfaction, but as a fellow user there is nothing that I can do to assist you in that area  All I can do is point you to these two articles that may give some strategies where you may be able to increase the battery life:

  • Macbook Pro (2012 April) Battery Life Reduced A Lot!

Hi guys I got a macbook pro sometime around April 2012 and the battery life just went down drastically in  a couple of months i have no clue why before it used to show upto 7 hours something initially but then it started showing only 4 hours or so i feel something went totally wrong with the battery is there any way to fix it please give me some helpful suggestions thanks! By the way i must mention this today i was watching the percentage meter it makes absolutely no sense first it showed 7:08 today on 98 percent then within few minutes it went to 6:28 in 97 percent so i think somethins is very strange with the battery. Just yestarday on 99 percent it was showing 4:38 hours please help me fix it.

As others have said the battery itself is perfectly OK.
The reason your remaining charge shows only 4:38 after it has been fully charged may be explained by one or more processes that are responsible for excessive power demands. To isolate that potential cause read: Runaway applications can shorten battery runtime, affect performance, and increase heat and fan activity
Because i have turned of put harddisk to sleep as someone on forums suggested to another user that turning that off can help stop freezing problems when opening lid
Whatever you did may have exacerbated this problem or created others. More information would be helpful. Can you provide more detail?
