MBPR as Second Monitor?

I know its possible to use the iMac as a second monitor through target display mode....however is it possible to use my 2012 MBPR as the second monitor for my iMac? I'm trying to edit a video and could use the extra screen real estate.

Yes, but not in a normal way.
You cannot use a MacBook Pro as an external monitor in the same way as a normal external monitor, nor by Target Display Mode.
If you are desperate, you can install a utility like ScreenRecycler or AirDisplay (the version for Mac, not iPad) that makes a Mac into an external monitor using your local network. But this is much slower than a normal monitor connection. It may not be suitable for situations that require fast refresh.

  • How to connect my Cinema Display as a second monitor

I just purchased a new 27-inch iMac, and I explained to the Apple folks that I had a 17-inch cinema display (silver clad model) that I wanted to connect, for a dual monitor set up. They told me just to get the Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter, but I was surprised to realize that's not going to work.
Can anyone tell me how to do this, and what connector is actually needed? I have the big old white power brick that I bought to daisy chain my old 17 and 23 inch displays with my old configuration (Mac Pro).
Or can you not have a second monitor with an iMac?
    Thanks in advance.

What connector is on that Cinema? ADC, VGA, or DVI?

  • Lightroom 5.4 jumps to second monitor when attempting to edit an image in Photoshop CS 6.

    Hello,
I have a brand-new HP z620 with an Nvidia Quadro K 4000 display adapter and apparently a software and/or hardware conflict.
I am experiencing an issue with Lightroom 5.4 window not working correctly with my second, not primary, monitor. When Lightroom is working on the second monitor and I need to edit an image in Photoshop cs6, I want Lightroom stay where it is and Photoshop to open on my primary monitor. And this has worked well for me on my previous system which was also a Windows 7 64-bit machine with an Nvidia GeForce GTX 570.
When I click the Lightroom option to "edit in Photoshop CS 6” The Lightroom window will move itself to the primary monitor for no apparent reason. This is the problem I am seeking to remedy.
No other external editing programs opened through LR behaves this way, such as NIK or OnOne Perfect Photo Suite, and I really need LR to stay on the second monitor on the extended desktop.
I’ve tried every monitor cabling setup I could think of to try and even unplugging the primary to make windows identify it as the 2 monitor in the screen resolution settings, but that does nothing for me. My new workstation is running the same OS version and a K4000. Monitors are currently connected to the display ports via dp to dvi adapters. I’ve already tried moving the connections around and plugging one into dvi, there doesn’t seem to be a setting I can change within windows or adobe to change this behavior.”
On a related note, I have similar instability in software made by X-rite that supports the use of a colorimeter allowing me to build profiles for monitors and evaluate colors precisely. During the profiling process I place the colorimeter in the designated place on the secondary monitor and direct the application to begin showing the colorimeter different colors on that monitor. At this point the colors jump to the primary monitor while the rest of the interface along with the colorimeter is a secondary monitor. I have a workaround that I'm using for this particular problem but I am fairly sure that the issue that causes the problem with Lightroom is also the source of my trouble here and I need to eliminate it.
    thanks for your time,
    Larry Garvey

  • How do I use my second monitor when first monitor in full screen??

  • How can I use my Samsung 193p as a second monitor?

I am trying to use my Samsung 193P Monitor as my second monitor. It usually has great contrast and good color when attached to my PC. I plugged it into my imac using a DVI to mini DVI adaptor I bought at the apple store. Now it has awful color and the whites are a muddy grey. There do not seem to be any drivers to download. I've called Samsung and Apple and they have no ideas. It is at 1280x1024. Does anyone have any ideas for me? Is there a way to get the monitor communicating with my imac?? Thanks.

Thank you for the suggestions. I tried again. The thing about the Samsung 193P is that it doesn't have any external "buttons" to push for contrast and brightness. You are supposed to use MagicTune to do this, but of course, that is not compatible with mac. Without any adjustments, it usually looks great on a PC. Do you think I could use my Spyder to calibrate it with the mac? Could I only calibrate the 2nd monitor? I don't want to adjust the new mac monitor in any way. Would that be an option?

The Mac uses a highly-parameterized universal Driver for every display. The parameters are set at certain times when a query is sent to your display. The display MUST answer with its name and capabilities, or the screen stays dark. A TV set that is off or "not paying attention" because it is set to a different port when the query occurs will rarely answer, and so will often remain dark.
You can use tools in the System Report to see whether your display has been detected at all. If it has, the report will look something like this, but its name will appear:
The times when the query is sent are:
    • at Startup
    • at wake from sleep
    • when the Mac-end of the cable is inserted
    • when using the Option ( Detect Displays ) button in displays preferences

perhaps, but my information was current. I had the same question and was looking for and answer and found it. So I responded in order to help others who found this question and were looking for an answer. This community is made more helpful and kept current by adding new answers with current information.
imobl... air display was a valid response for 2011 predating the question. Also using Monitor2go was valid in 2012. There were USB mirroring and as a 2nd display for an iPad options at the time the original question was asked.

I want to use my apple TV as a second monitor not a mirrored one, in other words, I want to use my TV as a second screen not a copy of my first screen, other people have asked this question but have been given mirroring answers so I am spelling it out here very specifically. I want a second display. This should be possible and would be awesome. Anyone know how to do this?

Nevermind I just installed it to try it and it's awesome, so happy right now, Thanks. All the things I had read about it on third party sites led me to believe it could not do extended desk tops, thanks for your help!

I have a new iMac with Lightning connector and USB. And I have a Macbook Pro 17" with Firewire and USB. Is there a way to connect the Macbook Pro to the iMac and make it into a second monitor for my iMac?

Your welcome, wish I had better news. You may want to look over Apple's FAQ on the subject (Target Display Mode) you can find it by clicking http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3924

  • What do i need to connect my 30" cinema display as a second monitor to my new 27" imac?

I recently purchased a new iMac and want to run my 30" cinema display as a second monitor. My local mac experts told me to use a mini display to dvi adaptor, but that didn't work for any of my cinema displays - the 30" that i want to use and a 21" that I have. I called the guys back up and after a little research, he told me to get a mini display port to dual link dvi adapter. This costs $99, so I want to be sure it's going to work.
Does anyone know if this will work, or if there is a better idea, or ****, does the new iMac even except a 2nd monitor.
Thanks. Looking forward to your input.

Well I may have heard wrong, but I do not believe that you can hook that 6 year old monitor to the latest 27" iMacs with ThunderBolt. I would do more research before putting out the bucks, or make sure that you can return it if it does not work.
But do let us know if you try it and it works.

  • How to set up a samsung 2433LW monitor as a second monitor?

I have a HP Pavilion Elite HPE running on Windows 7 64bit.  I have one monitor attached, a HP 2311x connected using one of the two available DVI ports.  When I connect a second monitor, a Samsung 2433LW using the second DVI port, the second monitor is not recognised and has a black no input screen and the original HP monitor loses all shortcut icons and only the desktop background is visible.
Please advise how I can get my second monitor to work.
    Thanks.

Does the Samsung 2433LW monitor work by itself on the computer???
    It sounds like the Samsung is taking over as the primary display and the HP is becoming the secondary display. Try swapping the DVI cables in the back of the computer and see if  that helps. Here is a photo of the back of the original display card in your HP Pavilion Elite HPE-540me Desktop Computer;

  • Connect a g5imac to a g4 powerbook as a second monitor

    Is this possible?
I want to use the laptop as a bigger screen to aid in editing, is it possible?
I have a powermac g5imac with 2 gig ram in.
    Thanks in advance.

Andy simply answered your very specific question. Now, if you want to hook up a second monitor (not the laptop as you first asked) to your iMac then you may get a few longer answers. Like, Maybe.
If you are editing DV then you should be able to connect your DV cam or deck via FW then connect a monitor to your camera or deck. However, this will just give you a playback monitor, you will not be able to extend your desktop to this monitor. With an iMac I think that is impossible to do because of the lack of additional video (DVI or VGA) outputs.
    Long enough?

  • How to use an iMac as a second monitor for an iMac

I have two 21.5 inch iMac's (late 2009) and I want to use one as a second monitor for the other. I have a Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort connector but when I connect it to both computers, nothing happens. I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong once they're plugged in or if I have the wrong cable all together. Any tips or advice would be much appreciated. Thanks

Not going to work, the ONLY 2009 / 2010 iMacs that supported Target Display Mode were the 27" models, 21.5" models simply will not work. Please read Apple FAQ on TDM and you will see I am correct.
Target Display Mode: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
While Neil is correct, Screen Recycler's performance is not that good so the user experience probably will not be worth it.

  • How do I use my wireless Led TV as a second monitor using my home network without any cables? Both of them are connected to home network

How do I use my wireless Led TV as a second monitor to my mac book pro using my home network without any cables? Both of them are connected to home network

Having a gateway there is not going to be a problem. We just need to configure the Time Capsule correctly to work with the 2Wire.
You will need one ethernet cable to connect the 2Wire to the Time Capsule and a second ethernet cable to temporarily connect your computer to the Time Capsule so that it can be configured.
The 2Wire you have now should already be broadcasting a wireless network, so once you have the Time Capsule setup, you will actually have two wireless networks there.
Here's how to configure the Time Capsule to work with the 2Wire:
Connect an ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the 2Wire to the WAN (circle icon) port on the Time Capsule.
Connect another ethernet cable temporarily from your computer to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule
Open Hard Drive > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab below the row of icons to assign a name for the Time Capsule, a device password (write this down) and adjust time zone settings
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
    Wireless Mode....Create a wireless network
    Wireless Network Name....Your choice
    Radio Mode....Automatic
    Channel...Automatic
    Wireless Security...WPA/WPA2 Personal
Wireless Password....Your choice (write this down)
Check mark next to....Remember password in keychain
    Click the Internet icon
At the bottom, change the setting for Connection Sharing to "Off (Bridge Mode)"
Click Update at the lower right and the Time Capsule will restart after 20-25 seconds and you should get the green light.
You should now be able to connect to your Time Capsule wireless network.
I'm not clear on whether you have tried to setup the Time Capsule to backup your computer. Post back if you need some info on that. We may need to start another thread for that as that will be a different subject.
