MBPr...should I wait or buy now

Hello everyone,
I'm on the market to buy a MBP for extensive video editing. I was about to purchased the 15" MBPr (16GB/512GB) from Bestbuy since they reduced the pricing but realized these prices never drop unless for a reason. So low and behold...the rumor mill has the Haswell vesion is coming out very soon (mid to late October) but there is no concrete information. I am hearing that this new version may not come with discrete GPU card. This could be a serious issue for us editors. We are already dealing with limited drive space...now this! Apple is seriously pushing away the pro line and frustrating!!
So...what should I do?

First off it's no secret that Apple uses Intel processors and Haswell processors are already out for the PC and they already have run some tests, there isn't much of a improvment in power or performance too much to really make much of difference in battery life. Of course there were running Windows, which is the same for all hardware.
It's public knowledge that Mavericks is going to pay better attention to performance/power etc., but again for what your doing it's not going to make much of a difference as you need more processing cores, power and cooling to get big jobs done fast.
It's possible that with Haswell that Apple will go all Intel HD graphics on the 15" MBP, deeming the 3D and pro video market no longer sustainable on portable devices and committing the MBP's totally to the consumer market.
You've got to realize that the new MacPro coming (also public knowledge) is going to be designed to handle 4K video that's upcoming, it's got a lot more pixels to handle than even HD does.
Currently FinalCut Pro X is struggling on current MacBook Pro's and the hardware design and power limits their use of heavy duty use even on power.
Apple is seriously pushing away the pro line and frustrating!!
No, it's the new demands of 4K on hardware that is making the MacBook Pro rather useless as a portable editing machine, sure it can do some on the job clips and train new users, but mainly that's going to be about it I'm guessing.
The new MacPro coming is a small design, power packed and yes, portable.
So instead of toting a notebook, you carry a case that contains the new MacPro and a portable monitor and you plug into power, keyboard, thunderbolt drives etc., and your rocking and rolling.
Since one really has to connect a MacBook Pro to power anyway since the battery life is so dismal....
Plus the new MacPro will have a HECK of a lot more cores than the MacBook Pro, thus it can render 4K video faster than a MacBook Pro can, on scene or back at the shop.
Once everyone realizes this, they will gladly welcome the new change, all those who are hobbyists on MacBook Pro's will be encouraged to use a iMac instead.

You cannot upgrade to Lion for free...the cost is low, though. Only $30 (US). That will get you more than just iCloud, there are other features as well.
Apple has announced some of the features of Mountain Lion on the website, are those features imporant to you? If you can live without iCloud until ML is released, date of which has not been announced, then the decision to buy now or wait is up to you. If you can make good use of iCloud now, then why wait?

I am getting a part-time job soon and want to buy the ZEN Micro, but the ZEN Micro Photo is coming out in Summer 2005, and that looks good, so should I get the ZEN Micro or wait for the Colour screen version?

I have read so many great things about the Mac. I've read superb reviews from sites like Cnet and PCMag. Now that I looked into wireless networking with the Mac, I am thinking about waiting to buy one. I have read a few posts about crashes and kernels when running wireless on the Mac because of update 10.4.10. Has there been a patch for this problem? Also, I already have my wireless setup on my PC. I have a Linksys WRT54G router with a Motorola Surfboard SB5101. If I buy a Mac, would I have to reinstall the router software on it? Thanks for the help...

Like most things in life, it depends...
I bought a 1.83 GHz core2 duo Macbook in July 2007. For the most part, the Macbook is a very nicely designed and manufactured machine.
High points: nice keyboard, magsafe power connector, long battery life when running OSX, ability to run Windows XP or Vista natively, iLife software suite.
Low points: WiFi disconnects in OSX 10.4.10, lackluster LG/Philips LCD has a relatively narrow viewing angle and "only" 262,000 (18 bits) of color resolution. No PC-X or PCMCIA card slot.
I guess I'm biased because I bought a Macbook. I tend to run Vista on it more than OSX due to the WiFi issues in OSX (WiFi is OK in Vista). More importantly, I can run the current release of MS-Office in Vista. The Macbook is nice in that I can run either OS without 3rd party software or goofy emulators. I love tinkering with Garage Band in OSX for recreation. If you are planning to run Vista, upgrade to 2G of memory. The Macbook is nice for doing presentations, but you'll need a VGA or DVI pigtail adapter, each of which is a $20 accessory. Apple should've put a standard VGA socket on the Macbook, as VGA cords are the de facto video port in most every conference room.
The main reason you might want to delay purchase would be to have Leopard pre-installed or at least qualify for a low cost Leopard upgrade.

Should i wait with buying a macbook pro for the mac os x lion software?

Hi there,
I've been saving up some money to buy myself a MacBook Pro 13", but I've been told to wait for the new lion upgrade.
It's not that I need the macbook right now, I mean, I can wait, but I don't want to wait for a system that's not refined yet.
I'm afraid the system might have bugs or issues or things...
So my question: should I wait till June/July with buying, or buy one now and have a good working system?
And do any of you guys know whether there'll be some kind of a grace period where they give you the new upgrade for free?

My take is to buy it when you need it. If that's now then buy it now. You can always upgrade to Lion when it comes out.

Should I wait to buy a MacBook Pro until Mountain Lion comes out?

I just don't want to lose any info I have if I buy now and then upgrade to Mountain Lion. Or mess something up, since I'd probably do that. (note: not the macbook pro with retina display, just a regular macbook pro).

Upgrading will not cause any data to be lost. If you are concerned about data loss, you may consider backing up to an external drive. You should probably be doing that anyway, since hard drives can fail at any time . In case you didn't already know, Macs purchased in between June 11th 2012 and the day of Mountain Lion's release qualify for a FREE Mountain Lion upgrade. Anyway, I would not worry about data loss.

The only thing in that list that will eventaully be resolved are the applications. There will be a new CD released that works in Vista. Decoding of Dolby Digital and DTS is no longer supported at the driver level by Vista. You will need to use software that has the capability to do so. DVD-Audio will not be supported. DirectSound was removed from Vista, DirectSound EAX games require ALchemy to function properly and only certain games are supported. 6. Speaker mode is not supported in Vista.

Should I wait to buy an iPhone or buy one now?

First off, I know for a fact that I am going to get an iPhone, but I just can't decide if I want to buy one now or wait for iPhone 2.0. The main reason for my hesitancy is the lack of 3G. All of iPhone's other missing features don't really concern me because they can be fixed through software updates. If Apple is going to release a 3G iPhone within the next 6 months or so then I might want to wait, but if it's going to be a year or more, then I'll probably just buy one now and suck it up with EDGE. Does anyone have any thoughts or ideas to when Apple might be planning to release a 3G iPhone? Any ideas that would help me make this decision would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot.

Are you saying he should get a new wife just to upgrade his iPhone? Or get a new wife for his existing wife? Depending on how much he likes his current wife, it may be simpler (and cheaper, frankly), simply to upgrade the phone and not the wife.

The 6G wouldn't come out for a whole year and they may not even continue the touch line. That would be too long and too much uncertainty for me to wait. Maybe it is time for an iPhone?

Should I wait to buy? (Antennagate)

I have been considering this for a while and I finally decided I want to buy an iphone. The problem is that I don't know if I should wait for apple to physically fix the antenna problem or just buy it now. I know that if I where to buy it today and Apple were to release the iphone 4b shortly after then I'd be pretty ticked off.
I know you guys probably know as much as me on this situation but should I buy the iphone 4 now or wait another month to see if a fixed version comes out.

There is no "Antennagate", to worry about. I have several iPhone 4 both for business and pleasure. Several family members and friends here in Canada also have the iPhone 4 and none of them report any "antennagate" issue. If you can hold your hand over the iPhone and cause it to drop from 5 bars to no bars then it's defective and should be swapped. If though you experience what every cellphone user experiences by watching it drop one bar from what every you're seeing before holding it then that's normal. The only true reception complaints seem to come from AT&T users in the USA due to living in already known bad reception areas or in Canada those on either Bell, Telus or Virgin Mobile due to none of the three networks provide backwards support for EDGE. So when the user goes into a none 3G area the iPhone data won't function. My family, friends and myself are all on Rogers HSPA+ network in Canada which supports EDGE when in fringe areas. I have a far better experience with the iPhone 4 than I had with my previous iPhones and other smartphones such as Blackberry.

Minor correction on last post, Bootcamp, to run Windows XP, is slated for the next release of OS X called Leopard, not 10.4.5 which is already released.
Since you asked for opinions....I'd tend to buy current technology (and I did with the last of the G4 mac minis). While the new Intel-based macbook will have super specs, it will be first generation on a new platform. While Apple is doing almost realtime revisions to their current Intel-based products, the fact is there are some growing pains (read through any of the Intel-based product discussions). I prefer the growing pains be with someone elses money.
If you buy a current iBook, it's a mature platform, and it will continue to be able to run existing software, as well as any universal software. You don't have to consider running non-universal programs under the emulator (Rosetta is a great tool, but there's a performance hit of up to 50% under emulation mode).
Use the iBook for awhile, and by then Apple will be on the nth generation of the Intel-based macbooks. In any event, you'll be thrilled with the switch to mac.

Should i wait to buy the 2015 retina macbook pro?

I've been wanting to buy the retina macbook for about a month. But im worried the new model will come out soon with better specs for the same price. Should i hold off on buying it? Or does it not really matter?

I am wondering this too, but usually no one says too much, because of policy on here.... I expect to see new Retina Macbook Pro's with the new 5th generation Intel processor's. I am waiting for now, because I don't need one right now today. My Late 2011 works flawlessly (knock on wood), so I'll probably keep it even with a new one. The price will probably be the same, or close.... Depends on if there will be a redesign of the Macbook Pro's, too. You never know, but the 12" Macbook Air and iPad Pro, may be taking priority, for redesigns, anyways. So, I would wait, as I am..... Should I wait to buy LR?

New to LR so I am using LR 3 trail (20 days left) and was set to order the boxed version when I found about LR4 Beta.
What should I do now:
1. Buy LR3 and upgrade later to LR4 with a price premium?
2. Install LR 4 Beta and use it to create all my catalogs and develop and make the purchase when LR4 is released?
With 1. the disadvantage is obviously price and having to adjust to a new version so soon. With 2. I am afraid the development adjustments won't be the same on the full release. What's you suggestion?

Well, you've pretty much figured out the issues.
Historically, the upgrade to the next release has been $99. No guarantees that it will be that this time.
With #2 some of your changes may not carry across looking the same, and there's always a risk with beta software that it has a catastrophic bug hiding in it somewhere that will come out and eat all your changes. Personally, I don't do anything on the beta that I'm not willing to lose.
You say "to create all my catalogues". Do yourself a huge favour, and create just one. Lightroom works far better as a digital asset manager (DAM) if you only have one. There are a few "corner cases" where having more than one can make sense, but until you know enough to work out what they are on your own, it's best to stick with only one.

Should I wait to buy an iSight?

So I really want to buy an iSight for my new mini and 23 in. apple cinema display. But from what i understand the current models are from 2004....Are these going to be updated any time soon with newer models? I'd hate to buy something at the end of it's product life... Does anybody have any recommendations as to what i should do?

Speculation about future Apple products is not allowed here.
If you want an iSight - Buy one. Waiting for the next update / upgrade is a very bad idea IMHO. If we all did that, we would all still be riding a horse to work.
