MBPRD 15" - Dead Pixels, Loud Fan, Overheating...

"Hello there!
Have been a devout user of your products since my early years! Never had an issue (dodgy disc drive here and there, but nothing to write home about!)
Last year I purchased my first PRO product, in the form of the brand spanking new Retina Display 15" Macbook Pro. Was delighted when it arrived FCPX (I even followed you there no questions asked, unlike much of the film industry) would render faster than I could work, the new version of OSX was flawless. I was as happy as could be, especially appreciating viewing my videos in high quality for the first time in edit!
I am currently travelling around the world, mac in bag seeing all the sights, I am not putting my macbook through copious amounts of work, some browsing here, a film there, a dabble of iPhoto, no biggie for a machine of this cal ire right? WRONG!
1) The noises this new fantastical fan designed to be more efficient and less noisy make are terrifying! It sometimes sounds as if it is about to blow up!
2) Overheating - it burns to rest my hand on the palmrest sometimes.
3) Overheating part 2 - I often get alerts that the internals are overheating operating sometimes at well over 90 degrees
4) Overheating part 3 - The one that prompted me to write this message, I just burnt my hand on the magsafe charger, not a wimpy burn a, "holy jesus Batman! I have a blister on my hand from my magsafe" burn!
5) Slowing down - Sure I understand this happens from time to time, but less than a year after i bought my new top op the range mac!
6) Dead Pixels - Boy oh Boy! isn't that retina display glorious! 5 million pixels all to myself! HD filmmaking and photography has never been so fun! except for about 100 of them are now dead, and ever increasing every day!
Now that is it on the technical faults for today, onto the customer service! I have tried to talk to an apple representative about these issues; why the worlds leading technology supplier does not have an email is beyond me! Why can i go into store or talk to somebody on the phone! Why not email said person on the phone? or have a live chat function? This does not bother me too much and has not ever been an issue with me as i usually am in London.
The fact of the matter now though is I am in Malaysia, by the time I am home the warranty is expired (I am afraid at this point it will be a case of "sorry bro can't help you, we have just released the new MBPRD though want to buy one") I have tried countless emails to random emails found online, even Tim Cooks apparent email address (although I know that was a long shot). I have also tried going into stores in Asia, granted there is a language barrier but it seems as though they are not interested in helping, I am also not in one particular area long enough to be able to get a repair service if need be (I assume it takes at least one week).
So this is my last hope, after all my failed emails, store visits. What should i do?! This machine is so close to being great! But has so many faults, most of which actually conflict with my work!

    I have a dead pixel in the middle of my screen and the fans are spinning at least every five to ten minutes of casual use. What should I do?

    Call Customer Support and have them replace the screen. They will send you a box to mail to depot.
    I had a MacBook Pro with a dead pixel and left speaker out. My MBP was 4 years old, definently out of warrenty. I called Apple, and they replaced the display without charge.
    I received the box on Wednesday, mailed it on Thursday (FedEx) and got my fixed MBP back on Friday, same week! This is why I still buy Apple.
    When calling customer service, stress that you have more than one pixel out, as you probably have a cluster. Have them do the repair at depot not at any Apple Store. Make sure, since you are still with 90 days, fix it for free.
    Should not be a problem.

  • IMac G5 Garbled Screen / Loud Fan / Overheating

    When I try to start up my iMac G5 (pre iSight), I get the usual chime, and when the screen starts up, I get a surprise every time. Completely garbled, sometimes it looks like fog, other times like garbled information, other times like an old, badly tuned TV.
    Then the fan kicks in really loudly.
    I put a brand new hard drive and OS 10.5 in there a few months ago, and the machine seemed to be running fine.
    Any ideas??

    Your video chip seems to be failing, see if you can boot from your install disc and run Apple Hardware Test to check things out. After that, you can run Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
    Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
    Then reboot from your internal drive and repair permissions.
    however, it does sound as if your graphics chip has failed. Unfortunately, they are soldered to the logic board, which has to be replaced to solve your problem.

  • Loud fan / overheating G5 - can anyone help?

    Hi - My iMac was fine until I used Toast. After burning a couple of discs very quickly it kept turning itself off. I looked at the log, and it had been overheating. I haven't tried burning any more discs, but the machine is now very noisy, even when just turned on. It also turned itself off when I tried to ftp some files from one of my websites.
    I got the iStat widget, and these are the readings:
    HD 38
    CPU 80
    GPU 42
    GPU ambiant 47
    incoming air 30 (the temperature in the room is 18 degrees centigrade)
    mem.controller 71
    mem. controler 59 (two of these)
    Fans: rpm
    optiical drive 1384
    CPU 3600
    HD 1626
    I was given a link for instructions to reset the smu:

    First time I tried it the computer turned itself straight off again after being turned on. I tried agtain, and it is on after 20 minutes, but still noisy. The figure for the CPU using iStat is still 3600 although the other figures have gone down a little.
    Can anyone tell me what is the next step?

    The G5 iMacs have had problems with the capacitors and the power supply, but since you have the iSight, it's no easy matter to open. I suggest you take it in to Apple and have them open it and check the caps on the logic board and the power supply. If the logic board needs replacing, it can be quite expensive and you'll have to decide whether it's economically justified.

  • IMac 27" (Late 2012) Loud Fan and Overheating Issues, causing Hard Drive Failure

    Hi all,
    I'm having some serious overheating issues with my new iMac. Any help to help me solve this problem would be gladly appreciated since it's really beginning to bug me. Here's what's has happened:
    I noticed in the first few hours of switching the iMac on that there was a short burst of very loud fan noise. This has been happening about once every two days since and every time I haven't been doing any heavy processing with the system. I've noticed that the main fan will spin, on average, at 1200rpm. Is that normal? The iMac is very well ventilated and sits right next to a window...
    I have also boot camped the iMac with a copy of Windows 8 so I could run some fairly power-hungry games. I intentionally purchased a high end iMac (27" display, Intel Core i7 3.4GHz, Nvidia GeForce 680MX Graphics, 1TB Fusion drive) and expected the iMac to run games flawlessly. However, after a few days, I noticed that the CPU and GPU had shot up to a worrying 80°C whenever I ran power-hungry games, with a very loud hissing noise from the fan. After running games for about 10 minutes, the fan will stop hissing, causing the GPU and CPU to increase to 100°C. The iMac then fails and switches off unexpectedly without any warning. After analysing the Windows event logs, I received an event ID 41: The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.
    As this occurred about six times whilst I was testing my iMac's performance, I think my hard drive has now begun to fail - sometimes I will hear the hard drive make a click noise, about once every 5 seconds. Sometimes, the clicking noise causes OS X and Windows to run very slowly (even though minimal RAM is being used and nothing too intensive (Safari, Mail etc.) is being processed). Running Repair Disk and Repair Disk Permissions under OS X's recovery mode as well as a repair in chkdsk in Windows suggests that there were no problems with the hard drive. All I can do is wait a while for the clicking noise to stop, and then performance will increase. I have backed up everything externally.
    I have also performed a reset of the SMC as well as the PRAM, which hasn't really helped.
    Any help will be appreciated. I will gladly provide any extra logs etc. if they're needed.

    That's the default fan speed on iMacs, so there isn't any problem with this.

    You must know that Boot Camp isn't compatible with Windows 8 and that Apple hasn't released drivers for Windows 8, so it can fail. Install Windows 7 inmediately until Apple launches updated drivers.
    As it looks like the hard disk is damaged, I would take the Mac to an Apple Store. It's in warranty, so it should be repaired for free or you should receive a new one

  • Radeon HD 3870 PCIe 2.0 overheating and loud fan problem fixed?

    Hello everybody.
    I just wanted to know if anybody on here has bought an 3870 lately and still has the overheating/constant loud fan issue. I have been told by Macsales that this issue has been fixed on the new cards? Is that correct? I am still shopping for a card for my MacPro 2007 1,1. Don't really have the money to buy the 4870 and the only other option I have is the 3870. Pretty sad that there are no other ones in that $200 (or less) price range. Every other card for that Mac version is in the $350-$450 range.
    Anyway, just wanted to know if these 3870 issues have been fixed.

    My experience with the 3870: I have 2 of them for 2 computers and have never got the fan issues reported all over this site. I dont think it applies too ALL 3870s'. They have been pretty much silent or close too. Its a great card with Motion and maybe I was tripping, but it seemed to make the interface a bit more snappy.
    Having said that, I have removed them now and replaced them with the 8800, due to Snow leopard and support for Open CL (FYI 3870 does not support Open CL, which is a shame, why? baffles me!) not that apps support that yet, but soon.

  • Ati & vaio = overheat &loud fan

    since a few months I was very annoyed with the loud fan and overheated laptop (70-90º). reboot to windows and all normally. i try everything.. believeme..
    yesterday, while moving teamviewer's wine window with Mod4key (windows' super key) and mouse (dwm's way) fan speed came slow and temperature went down. i really don't know what's happening here...
    any clue?

    Same behaviour for me.
    If you keep a key pressed and simultaneously a finger on the touchpad it will further decrease the fan speed. Oddly this also occurs on Windows. The same trick almost stops the fan!

  • Dead Pixels, NOT FROM MONITOR

    Hi,
    I am (and have been for quite some time) running a Dual 1GHZ MDD G4 with a 23" Cinema display. I have never had any problems with dead pixels on the monitor before.
    I just recently upgraded to Leopard, with no problems I could see. After using my computer normally for some time, I started it up from sleep to find that my monitor was covered in vertical columns of pixels that were seemingly stuck.
    I verified that it was not the monitor, 1) by plugging it into my laptop--everything worked fine, and 2) I can actually take screenshots of the dead pixels.
    I have never encountered anything like this before, the pixels are always in the same place, unless you move a window underneath them in which case the original pixels stay on the window, and duplicate themselves repeatedly as the window is moved (shown in the second screenshot I linked to.
    Anyways, any insight into what the heck is going on would be much appreciated. Screenshots:

    Try booting from either your original System disc or a Tiger/Panther install disc and see if the problem replicates. If it does, it's a hardware problem. Video artifacts like what is shown in your images usually indicate a failing video card - either the GPU or RAM on the card have overheated and been damaged.

  • Three dead pixels! Help! T420s

    Just noticed two more dead pixels on the right hand side of the screen. I have warranty up until 2015 and the warranty type is next day on-site.
    Also, the fan is always on fast and makes a lot of noise. A whirring noise to be specific - engineer coming on Friday. 
    Can anyone advise me on what to do next? Here's some other problems that I am facing:

    An engineer is coming on Friday, I have next day service but I am only home all day on Friday.
    Just really upset about this, I purchased a £1000+ machine and all these problems under six months is really not good at all.

  • Loud fans in sleep mode 20" G5 iMac Rev A, OS 10.4.11 New Info

    This is more of a confirmation and heads up on a problem I encountered and solved to see if any of you have other ideas.
    Several weeks ago I replaced the power supply bought from Mac Pro Online in my G5 iMac. When I put it to sleep I hadn't noticed anything odd at first because I'ld just walk away until one day I could here the fans going full blast. The screen was off as usual but the sleep mode light wasn't on while the fans were running. I waited about a minute until the fans returned to normal speed and the sleep mode light returned to its usual behavior only it seemed to be a lot brighter.
    I awoke the iMac from sleep and all was fine. I put it back to sleep and the screen shut off as usual but the sleep mode lights wouldn't turn on. I waited about a minute and listened to make sure that the iMac hadn't shut down and then the fans started up full blast for about 30 seconds and then returned to normal and the sleep mode lights turned back on.
    I shut the iMac down, disconnected all USB and ethernet cables and reset SMU using the unplug power cord, 10 second wait, replug holding down rear start button. Fixed it!
    Swapping out USB devices I narrowed it down to a Kingston USB Multi-sized port memory care reader hub-part number: FCR-HS219/1. I tested and got repeated results described above reconnecting it and downloading some images and ejecting. Loud fans in sleep mode happened again.
    Tried a MobileMate Memory Card Reader, downloaded images, ejected and no problems with sleep mode.
    My question is what could've messed up the Kingston Card Reader? It was working fine before the power supply replacement.

    There's no telling.
    Only cause that came to mind is a lightning hit last week that sounded very close by where all it did was cause the lights in my home to blink. The computer didn't. However, this might have fried the Kingston card reader.
    To give an idea of the resilience of the former power supply, about a year and half ago I had the back off with the iMac sitting upright on a towel on the table while I played a YouTube video to see if I could cool this thing down. Instead of cooling it I overheated it by blocking the vents to where suddenly the iMac just shutdown. I could detect a strong smell of melted plastic from the power supply.
    Put the iMac back on its stand and restarted without a hitch and I've never had any problems until several weeks ago when it just started shutting down for no reason. It passed the LED light test as it still does now with the new power supply.
    This is the first Mac out of three I've had since 1998 that allowed me to see odd behavior like this. I had to rely on my 2000 Pismo G3 PB to find a replacement PSU online. That thing never breaks.

  • Very loud fan sound, can't get video, system still running...help?

    I can't seem to find an answer to this anywhere here or throughout google. Can't find a similar problem.
    We have a G4 tower here at work that we run FileMaker server on. It pretty much just sits there and we all connect to it remotely and use the FileMaker on our own machines. It's usually not even touched unless Filemaker needs to be restarted or something along those lines. It shares a monitor with another system so its not usually even connected to a monitor.
    Well - today there is a loud fan noise coming from it that we havent heard before. So we went to hook up the monitor and can't get any video. It was fine in the past week or so because we have been on it with the monitor.
    FileMaker must still be running fine because we can still connect...for now...but we can't load up a screen to properly shut down, or run the backup or anything to safely turn the machine off. I am not sure which OS is currently installed because I can't get to that info.
    Our guess is that the video card died, and that is the video card fan spinning...but if that were the case, would the software running still be fine like it is?
    Any help would be greatly appreciated. Our tech guy can't make it out until tomorrow morning and we're afraid to have to wait that long...

    G4 tower covers a lot of G4s; it would help to have more specific model information. I think some of the later ones (not my DP800 QS) had software controlled fans. It's possible part of the operating system has crashed and the fan is automatically going into full speed to automatically prevent overheating. The rest of the OS may still be running and explaining why you can get to your files. I'm not sure about the video though. Perhaps somebody else has something more constructive but with that kind of thing I can't help but feel you'll just have to switch off the machine and restart it.

  • Dead Pixel paranoid! How do I protect MacBook Pro 15 retina screen?

    Hello all,
    First Mac ever!  I just paid over $3,100 for the MBPrd and additional apple care.  After doing some research I have heard that dead pixels are a major problem!  Also that apple just blames it on "DUST" when you close the lid!
    As a new Mac customer I find it hard to believe that I just paid that much for a performance marvel that is so easily effected by.. Dust, the most common household / office particle.
    So, what is the best way to protect the screen?  B/C I can tell you right now if down the road I have to argue with some "Genius" about dust ruining the display on my super expensive laptop, I'd rather just return the thing tomorrow.  It blows my mind that the screen doesn't have better warranty coverage even under the additional apple care!
    Any advise is appreciated.

    You should have an HDMI port on your Retina display model?
    All you need is a standard HDMI to HDMI cable to connect to your television (assuming that it has an HDMI port). I actually have run an HDMI cable through my stereo receiver and just selected it via the receiver since I've a shortage of HDMI ports on my television.
    You could also connect via Thunderbolt to HDMI with the proper cable, if you wished.

    I am a fan of APPLE product. I have IPHONE,IPAD,IPAD MINI. Because I trust the quality of apple.
    But things changed since I bought the MBP.
    I bought the MBP on Aug. 2013 and had changed monitor twice.
    Today, a dead pixel appear again, I don't know how can I deal with this? Have to change it again?

    Three repairs in such a short time frame isn't good. It's not normal. Ask for them to give you a new one.

  • How to fix dead pixels on a 20 inch flat panel??

    I bought my 20 in flat panel 3 years ago. Both the Dell and the Apple used the same panel from the same manufacturer. My choice was Dell because of the 3 year warranty and 5 selectable inputs. So much for history. In the last 2 weeks I have found what I thought were 2 areas of dead pixels perhaps 10x10 pixels. They were sort of irregular blobs. They were definitely not on the surface of the screen. i.e. dirt. On the off chance I was blind or something I took a very soft cloth, wet it with plain water, rubbed the blobs using my finger tip and they disappeared. I watched through a magnifying glass and you could see the surrounding pixels distorting from the pressure. I don't know what I did to the LCD layer behind the glass but the suffice to say the blobs were gone. The same thing should apply to the Apple display since it uses the same panel. I am not recommending this as a tested and guaranteed fix I am just telling my experience. PS, I am an absolute Mac fan and am not recommending any one elses product.
