MBPretina 2.5 i5

Hey guys
I recently bought a 13" Macbook Pro with retina display 2.5 ghz i5.  Before this, I had macbook pro 2.53 ghz intel core 2 duo (2009) which still works but was getting sluggish, so I thought it would be good to get a new notebook.
As mentioned, the 13" MBPr was purchased recently, a couple of months ago.  I am considering if it would be absolutely stupid to get a 11" MBA for the sake of portability, in addition to keeping this 13 MBPr.  I'd imagine it will be easier to carry the 11 MBA around than my 13MBPr.  But the 13 MBPr is a lot ligher than the one i previously owned.  Do you guys think it is absolutely idiotic to get another notebook (11 MBA) that are within similar time frame?
I have an iPad 4th gen.  But I think an 11" MBA would be more efficient.  iPad is good for certain things but I came to realize that to actually read pdfs and annote them with proper apps, it is actually more time consuming than the old traditional, printing-highlighting when come time to write a research report.  I am a grad student.
Your input would be much appreciated to weigh my options.
Thanks

If you absolutely needed the smaller footprint and the lighter weight, then an Air makes sense. If you had, for instance, a 15" non-Retina rather than a 13" Retina, I might be inclined to say 'go for the Air.' However, with such small differences in weight and size between the 13" Retina and the 11" Air, I just can't recommend (Unless, of course, you feel that you actually need the slight difference in weight/size that you would gain) the 11" Air in addition to the 13" Retina.
Make sense?

  • Got the MBPretina. Now, what High-end Monitor ?

After lots of waiting, weighing pros and cons and whether I should go iMac, Mac Mini or MacBook Pro High rez anti-glare, helped in that pilgrim quest by some encouraging users reviews and eventually compelled by a dealer's special, I fell for a 2013 MacBook Pro Retina 15". First impressions are great. So far, after installing most of my compatible programs, there has not been a hiccup. Leaping from an early iMac Core2 duo, Lightroom seems to fly !
It is still in the installation phase and I wonder if it will provide for all the connections I need. I'm not a fan of prolonged exposure to WIFI, so I plugged it to the network with the Apple USB to Ethernet adapter, which works great also for retrieving stuff from my iMac with a normal patch cable (thanking again for the informative post on auto-sensing ports provided here). Of course, WIFI does also work for those tasks. I got the USB to Ethernet adapter instead of the faster TB to Ethernet, because I will need the two Thunderbolt ports, one for an external display and the other for my older FW800 drives (I went USB3 subsequently). This will leave  one USB3 port available for another drive. Things might get a bit awkward for downloading CF cards, but then I can simply unplug the network for a while. Still, there is a USB printer sitting there, a USB microphone, and I might find the need for an external scratch at some point as the internal SSD fills up. I reckon that an USB3 hub will soon prove necessary.
Monitor. Since Apple hasn't yet announced a designer grade Apple Display, I'll be looking at third parties. I  do skip the top notch ones for some obvious reason. After extensive research, I am left with those contenders : The proven CCFL NEC PA27W, or the Eizo SX2762W. But for a similar price, I'm actually seriously leaning towards the new DELL U3014.
What draws me to the Dell is the ratio first. Many of my images are framed vertically, and I also work with InDesign. Brightness on that LED panel can be set to a minimum of 50 cd/m2, with non flickering GB LED back-lighting technology. Price is a lot less than the NEC counterpart. Last but not least, it has a USB3 hub. The earlier released U2713H is well reviewed, except for uniformity.
Now the drawback: Monitors this size must be plugged in with the dual cable adapter, which takes one TB and one USB I think. But this would be the case with the other two also.
The DELL has a USB3 hub, which would greatly help, but the MacbookPro Retina seems  fussy with external USB3 hubs have I read, at least earlier versions of the MBPr.
There have also been some sleep issues with some types of monitors. But I suppose that using the latest, I should not see that.
What did I forget ? I would gladly take any word of encouragement and /or  of warning before the final purchase !
    Thanks!
    Paul

First, I love Eizo monitors. Second, I couldn't afford one so I bought the Apple Thunderbolt Display. With a colorimeter, it produces 'good enough' color.
I would suggest that you ask the color pros on the Adobe Color Management Forum - http://forums.adobe.com/community/design_development/color_management?view=discu ssions. You'll get plenty of opinions there.
    Good luck,

  • No audio in MBPretina 2013

    Hello,
I've just bought the new MBP retina 13" and I need to record sound with the Headphone entry. Before this MBP I have a 2010 MBP and there was the possibility to record audio input earphone but now I can not find this option in sound preferences...
Have they removed this feature? or is it a problem from my MBP?

    Hi Jimix31,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
If you have the Early 2013 model, the technical specs show that you have a headphone jack for output, and dual mics for input (see image).  You would need a USB or Thunderbolt audio interface to record music on this computer.

  • Screen problems - black screen and lock-up (plus HDMI issues)

Hi, I'm not sure if these are related to the same fundamental issue, but they are both serious problems that need resolution.
I have a new mid-2012 MBPretina.  I am on all the latest updates (10.8.2).
The first problem is the most recent, and the most serious problem.  Since I updated the Java a couple of days ago I've been experiencing random black screens and lock-ups.  Essentially, what happens is that sometimes when I perform an action (opening an app, clicking a link on a webpage, performing other kinds of in-app actions, etc.) the computer screen will go black.  About half the time I can, through my own memory, try keyboard combinations to quit or force quit the most recently used app (the one where the action was just performed), and I will get some glimpse of the underlying apps, while the menubar and other areas will remain black until I move a window on top of the black space.  Sometimes no key combinations work and I am forced to perform a hard restart with the power button.  This is a serious issue, obviously, since I will lose current work/progress in my apps.  I'm not sure if this is because of the new Java update, or has to do with something else, but it started happening shortly thereafter, over the last 2 days.  I work most of my waking day on my laptop, and this "black screen of death" has happened about 5 or 6 times a day.
The second problem I have been experiencing since I starting using my MBPr with external HDMI displays in August/September.  The problem is that I will plug the MBPr into an HDMI display, the screen will temporaliy go black, and then bring me to the login screen (as if it's crashing, albeit softly).  This happens about 1 out of 4 times nowadays.
How can I fix these problems, especially the first?

    UPDATE:
Clearly there's a problem because a third of the way through a clean reinstallation from scratch it black screened again. Hmmmm.
Now this is not good. Problem is I can't rule out potential updates from Apple that might have caused this either.
    The search for solutions continues.

  • HP Laserjet p1505n doesn't work over network with Yosemite

Ever since upgrading the machines in my house (Mac Pro, iMac, MBPretina, MBAir) to Yosemite, I have not been able to use the network attached Laserjet p1505n that used to work flawlessly under 10.9.  It doesn't appear in the printer tab in System Prefs where it used to pop up.  Anyone have any experience with this?  The printer will install via USB just fine on the Mac Pro, MBPRetina, etc.  Thanks!

To see the printer in the Default view of the Add printer window, a protocol called Bonjour is used by the printer and Mac. This protocol is having issues for some users who have upgraded to Yosemite. Until the issue is resolved you may be able to use one of the IP protocols to connect to the networked printer. To do so you will need to find the IP address being used by the printer. If the LJ-P1505n has a control panel, you may be able to generate a report showing the network settings.
Once you have the IP address you can open Printers & Scanners and click the plus button to add a printer. Then click on the IP icon and enter the IP address of the HP in the Address Field. In the Protocol field, change to HP Jetdirect-Socket and in the Queue field, leave this blank. You can then change the Name from the IP address to LJP1505n and in the Use menu, select the P1505n printer. Click the Add to complete the printer creation and then see if you can print.

  • Can anyone recommend a USB CF card reader that will work in my Macbook Pro Retina? My USB card readers for CF cards do not work

At present, the only way I can load photos from a CF card to my new Macbook Pro Retina is by loading them onto an external hard drive via an old PC that can accept either of my USB card readers, then plugging the external hard drive into my MBP. Neither the USB card reader or the cable that comes with the Canon HDSLR camera will transfer photos directly to my MBP. I find it unbelievable that I have to go to a PC to load photos because I can't do it with my new MBP.
Has anyone found a reliable USB CF card reader, or one that connects via thunderbolt or HDMI, at any price, that will work directly with the new MBP Retina?

    This is what we need:
Location photoshoot - we use the Canon EOS 5D  Mk II still camera & the Canon FX100 pro camcorder.
CF cards are: SanDisk Extreme UDMA & SanDisk Extreme Pro UDMA 6 for video (I think they are both Type II) My Mac recognises them both as FAT 32 format
My MBPRetina is on the latest version of Mountain Lion OSX 10.83
the files from the camcorder will transfer to my MacBook Pro Retina directly via the camera's cable but it is quite slow & it means I cannot continue to film while downloading files but this we can live with.
the files from the still camera Canon EOS 5D  Mk II will not transfer directly via the camera's cable - have yet to get the Canon software to download, but via the camera's cable will not help anyway as we need to have the still camera free to keep shooting.
We need to be able to take out the CF card from the first part of the shoot & download the still shots while just on the Macbook's battery power, while we insert a fresh CF card back into the still camera to continue with the next part of the shoot simultaneously (while the first card is downloading.)
The files from the first part of the shoot will be both in RAW (.CR2) & Jpeg format. We just need to quickly transfer the jpegs, then I do a quick sort, batch the best ones as black/white images, & use these in a client slideshow immediately after part 2 of the shoot.
Obviously we need fast data transfer speeds, & rely on the MBP's battery power while on a location shoot.
The card readers I have tried are an older specific CF card reader branded as Palm, & a USB 2 multi card reader branded as Travel Flash. With both readers, the lights on the readers flash on & off, & the MBP recognises the card & the files will even appear both in Finder & in i-Photo, so it starts importing, then aborts with an error message saying:
'The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “” can’t be read or written.
    (Error code -36)'
    & another message saying:
'the disk was not ejected properly'.
So it appears the MBP does read the CF cards but the card readers don't stay connected, no matter what angle I put them on or however many times I re-connect them.
Yes, they are probably cheap & I want to buy a decent one.
    So, in summary:
the card reader needs to work when the MBPR is only on battery power (I read in some forums that some USB card readers aren't so reliable on the laptop's battery power)
the card reader needs to be quite fast. I have read the USB 3 readers won't read CF cards at higher than USB 2 speeds. Is this true? Are the firewire connected ones faster, & if so, are they still reliable on the MBP's battery power?
From research, it appears my problem is associated with my specific model of Mac & platform, being MacBook Retina on Mountain Lion OSX Version 10.83. If any of the recommended card readers have been successful with this, plese let me know.
Thanks heaps for the suggestions so far.

  • How to get audio input through 3.5mm on MacBook Air

I am trying to use the 3.5mm jack on the MacBook Air as an input jack. I am running several Mic's to a sound board, and then using it's output to get the audio to my system. The problem is, when I plug the cable into the jack, it thinks it is speakers. Does anybody have a solution? I cannot find any way to manually adjust this from output to input. Also, using USB is not an otion, becuase it is coming from a sound board, not jus one mic.
    I am using a mid-2011 MBA with Lion 10.7.5
    Thanks!!!

Maybe you can help me now?
I have a iPhone 1/8 inch microphone adapter - 3.5mm 4 conductor TRRS Male to 3.5mm Microphone Input Jack from here. that allows me to plug my lapel mic directly into my iphone and record, it is great.
I was hoping I could also use it on my MBPRetina to accomplish the same purpose. Do you know if that is possible? I tried and tested it recording a video in iMovie, and didn't notice any change.
I went to the Sound Input Preferences, and do not notice the mic input changing when I plug it in or remove it. In other words, it always says "internal mic."
My lapel mic is battery operated, with a fresh battery, and it was turned on.
What am I doing incorrectly? Any help would be wonderfully appreciated!

  • Why is my Mavericks MBR crashing when screensharing?

If I'm on a call, screensharing, I get logged out of Mavericks seemingly randomly. Usually takes a couple of minutes to happen
Have read lots about problems with Virtual machines (which I use), and Skype and GoToMeeting, but various combinations are all causing the problem.
I've just installed Parallels 9 (latest update I assume, as it tells be I have the latest version when I check), and it contains a Win 7 VM. I made sure I had it running when I was screen sharing via GoToMeeting, but I still experienced the randon Log Out crash on my 2013 MBPRetina running latest version of Mavericks.
Previously I was working with Virtual Box and experiencing the same problem which screensharing on Skype or GoToMeeting.
I think Mavericks itself is to blame. It doesn't seem to matter which combos I use - I still get the crashes. Wish I had never "upgraded" to it, as I had no issues at all on Mountain Lion.
Never was a new OS version more aptly named.
I am a relatively new Mac convert (last year), and was quite happy until I upgraded to Mavericks.
    Not particularly technical either.
Is there any consensus on where this problem lies.

You can look at the console (in your applications/utilities folder) for system messages when the problem occurs.  That often provides hints as to what happened.  Most likely the winder server crashed and it could be graphics driver related to Mavericks.  If that is the case, then you may not see any improvement until a later version of Mavericks is released.
Lots of very smart people here so post what you see in the console during the problem.  If you post all your console messages then no one will read it (it will contain tons of stuff).

  • Would the MacBook Pro Retina 13" with 4GB of RAM be sufficient for me?

    Hello,
I was looking to purchase my first laptop and first Mac computer. I'm very short on cash, and I'm looking to grab one as soon as possible. I know it is often reccommended to purchase the MacBook Pro with 8GB of RAM (if you're going for the 13"), but as said, I'm short on cash, and want to make sure the 8GB isn't overkill.
I'd mainly be using the laptop for web-browsing, games (nothing hard-core, I don't think), and eventually, college work. I have a (frustrating) PC desktop I can use for work now, but I'm going off to college late next year and will need a laptop to type documents on.
All of the games I was looking at (five in total through Steam. Stuff like Civ 5.) had reccommended 4GB of RAM. I may add some additional small games through the Mac App Store over time, but I don't think I'll be putting too many other games on there. I calculated the hard drive space needed for all of the games combined, and I'm left with 121 GB of storage after adding just the games.
Based on this information, so you think the 4GB of RAM would be alright?

Yes you'll be fine. Keep in mind nothing in the MbPRetina is upgradable on the future
I used to work for Best Buy as an Apple Specialist, but all my comments, posts and opinions are my own and do not in anyway reflect Best Buy. Mostly because I think the exact opposite as Best Buy anyway

  • How to get unicode string through NCO 3.x ?

    Environment: ECC 6.0 Unicode

    how to fixed?

  • Large file export times? over 20 hours?

Hi I am trying to export a 3,4GB tiff from aperture to jpg original size. My MBPRetina has been counting away about 22 hours now. Activity monitor says things are cranking away fine but the file has yet to materialize. The "expoert file" jpg has appeared but it is empty. Is there any way to figure out if things are fine? Or should I just wait. How long do these usually take?

SD, I am using a brnd new MBP with retina. 8 GB standard RAM. 250SSD. The hard drive has approx 10GB used for my pics and nothing else. So 81gigs used 160 gigs free.
I used PT gui to stitch up around 80 pictures from a nature scene. I am planning to print a large canvas from it. If I ever get it that far. I cant get a 3,4GB file to print so trying to squeez it down with JPG conversion should get it under 250MB.
I am not sure if PTgui lets you output PSD will look into it.
THnaks for the help so far. I will let Paerture think until morning so another 12 hours before I force quit it and see what happens.

  • Still suffering with dropping, unresponsive bluetooth on MBP Retina. When will this be fixed?

I am still having this problem with my MBP Retina display. I am currently typing on the keyboard on the machine because it just lost the bluetooth connection, yet again. After the message flashes up saying "connection lost" for my keyboard the bluetooth settings on my system preferences are not responsive. It drops the connection very regularly, usually at the end of the day but it's something that goes wrong with the bluetooth on the macbook because I get the same <<do not localize...Name not available>> message that others have mentioned.
What has NOT fixed this issue:
    I have reset NVRAM/PRAM
    I have reset the SMC
    I have the latest OSX v. 10.9.2
I have new batteries in two different apple wireless keyboards that have both suffered the same issue
I have switched off wifi and run from ethernet, but bluetooth still fails, it still happens.
I have searched the discussions and found many people reporting the same problem going back many months now but nobody posting a solution that works. When is this going to get sorted out?

This is still happening to me on a daily basis. I'm unable to connect to, or switch off bluetooth on my MBPRetina from Spring 2013. I get the message <<do not localize...name not available>> on my bluetooth preferences. I'm now going to restart my computer so I can connect to the wireless keybaoard. Is there nothing that can be done about this glitch?

  • Safari clicking sound when playing video.

Issue has been with me on my (mid-2012) MBPretina since I got it (I think). Video on any website has a consistent glitchy clicking sound (no actual video issues) but no issues in Chrome. Haven't tried other browsers and video in other apps (iTunes etc have no such problems)
I have now upgraded to Mavericks and the issue persists.
I'd rather not use Chrome so...
    <Edited by Host>

If the video requires Flash ..
Open System Preferences > Flash Player then select the Advanced tab.
Click Delete All under Browsing Data and Settings
    Not empty the Safari cache.
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Advanced tab.
Select:  Show Develop menu in menu bar
Now click Develop from the menu bar. From the drop down menu click Empty Caches.
    Now try a video.

  • So tired of this MBP15" 2013 Retina Glitching

Ok, so after numerous video issues with my MBP 15" retina - they decided to replace my screen. Now keyboards that woke the computer in clamshell mode wont do it. I can connect the smaller form apple keyboard to my APPLE LED display and it will wake the laptop. I can even wake the laptop with the mouse and the usb for the large keyboard isnt connecting, like the usb isnt connected. I just dont know. Such a frustration. When I took the display mouse, keyboard et. al to the genius bar it worked perfect. Is there a way they can load test the display and usb ports? This is the 3 replacement I have gotten since 2012 MBPRetina

I received an email telling me that my bill hasn't been paid.  I checked the bills for both the land line and the DSL.  Both were paid in full a minimum of 2 days before the notice was sent.  Upon further review, the account # mentioned in the notice isn't mine.
I contacted Cust Service.  The lady was very nice - she checked my accounts and saw that my invoices were paid. She cannot find this other account on which I received a dunning notice. Somehow it is connected to me for payment butshe cannot help. She said I had to go to Wireless group and gave me the number to call.  I called.  The man was very nice, but after talking, I was told by him that I, again, have the wrong group then the pitch started for FIOS and other services.  They can't solve this problem or get me to the correct group to solve it - but they want me to do more business?  This man was transferring me to the "right" group to handle my matter. The phone rang and I received a message telling me they were disconnecting my call.  SO- Is this retaliation for not agreeing to consider other Verizon services?
This isn't the first time that I have had problems trying to connect with Verizon to straighten out a billing problem.  It is a round robin of finding the right person AND the constant pitch to buy more. I think customer service would be interested in serving the customer first.
