MBPro 15'' Early 2011 - Overheated while playing civilization: V
Well basically summarised by the header. MBPro got overheated CPU more than 70 Deg and both fans avove 6000rpm while less than 5 mins into the game. Anyone having the same probs ? Any advise on how to overcome this and enjoy a game on such an advanced machine ?
Yes. When working hard it will heat up fast. As long as the fans are able to stabilize the temperature so it doesn't continue to rise, the machine will be fine. If the fans can't keep up because the ambient air temperature in your room is too high or you're resting the MBP on a soft surface that prevents air from circulating underneath it, it will shut itself down for its own protection before it overheats.

Macbook Pro Early 2011 having issues

I hope this message finds you all well.
Sorry that my first post is one begging for help but with a gig 3 weeks away i am bricking it due to the fact that my macbook pro, early 2011 has been playing up of late. It first started having problems when the L shift key became stuck, not physically but after some investigation on here I used Karabiner software to ascertain the issue and disable the key. However since then the computer hasnt run properly at all.
I have tried disk repair and so forth, also run Avast virus check but the issues still persist.
I run Traktor DJ software and for no reason the macbook has started glitching, spinning wheel of doom comes and everything slows down. I can't run simultaneous programmes and certainly can't run my Arkaos Grand VJ software at all which isn't good when we have a big gig in 3 weeks time.
I have run the Etrecheck as shown below but I dont know what to make of it?!
Can someone please give me some advice as I am stuck and cant rely on the laptop for the gig which will throw a real spanner in the works.

j.Quicktime comes pre-installed on all Macs. Quicktime 10 should be on your Dock and the original application inside your Application folder. Quicktime 7 is inside your Utility folder. VLC is the application that you need to download.

im making a photo slide show using imovie. how will i make a dvd copy that can play in both pc and dvd player. i dont have an idvd anymore. m using a mbp early 2011 osx 10.8.5.
after making the photo slide show, i clicked share>export movie. after which i burned using toast. the file became a .mov. i tried playing it in my mac and it worked. my fear now is will it also play in a regular dvd?... i read from google that mov files won't run in dvd players. what format should i convert it to so it'll play in a dvd player. can you suggest a faster way i can burn my projects for it takes me almost an hour to export. im going to make 28 slideshows for my kids in school. *=( if i need to do this process 28 times, i may not be able to finish it on time. please suggest a software or an alternative as to how i should do this... m more comfortable using imovie than iphoto. thanks and i hope to hear from someone soon *=jThank you QuickTimeKirk...used toast to burn project... my project was in .mov, i tried to play it a dvd player, it did play... will try again tomorrow using another dvd player just to be sure it'll will really work with dvd players. thank you again for your reply *=)

Why can't I play call of duty 4 on my matchbook pro early 2011?
I have recently purchase the call of duty 4 from the mac app store it took my mac from 10 pm till 5am the next day to download the game on a fast wify home connection ,when it finaly dowload I start playing the game first thing I nottice was the sreen was frezzing up, well I continue to play with the screen doing that play the game first mission like that ,but wen I got to the second mission my mac just froze up ???????
then I when and unninstall the app ,reinstall it ,play it againg nothing change still doing the same thing it was doing before ,so I whent to the game support website , I found a patch to dowload for my mac ,download it try to istall it ,massege came up telling me that the call of duty 4 ap was not install corectly ,so I when back unninstall the app for the second time reinstall it one more time nothing change the game still doing the same thing is frezzing up is really frustrating this hole thing it just suck ............can anybody help me understand this please ,and yes my macbook pro is an early 2011 2 ghz intel core i7 ,500gb ,4GB 1333 MHz DDR3 ................What model is your Mac? Go to energy saver and disable graphics swtiching, if you don't see it, then you don't have a "3D gamers" laptop or a video card strong enough to run the game.
Only a 15" MacBook Pro 2.2 Ghz or better can run the game as it has a stong video card.
Intel HD 3000 graphics only Mac's need not apply. -

itunes 10.7 (21)1. A 13" screen is awfully small to do any efficient editing. The 15" gives you significantly more on-screen real estate.
2. All of the MacBook Pros can run FCE. However the graphics processor in the 13" model will limit some functionality with effects. See Tom's earlier comment.
3. Not much difference. All these cpu's are fast. There will be more overall system performance gain from the quad core at the slower speed.
4. FCE cannot use more than 4GB RAM anyway, so the 4GB that comes with every MBP is more than adequate. If you expect to use Aperture or CS5 then go for more RAM, otherwise there's not much reason to add RAM. You will be better off spending your money upgrading to the 7200rpm hard drive.
5. Everything will be smaller on the high res screen; there are just more pixels (1680x1050) on the same 15.4" screen area. (I have a 15" MBP with the standard 1440x900 screen and it is beautiful.) -
Cloning SSD drive 17-inch MBPro early 2011 (10.9.1) from HHD 2007 MBpro 10.6.8
I just bought a used MacBook Pro 17-inch Early 2011 2.2 Ghz 8GB Ram /512GB OCZ-Vertex4 SSD running OSX 10.9.1 .
My current older MBPro is a 2007 model 2.2Ghz Intel Core duo 4GB Ram/200 GB 7200Rpm HD running 10.6.8. I am a musician and running Pro Tools 9.0.2 and Logic 9.1.8 very smoothly.
I wanted to clone the newer SSD drive with the contents of my older system and apps, etc. to continue to work without having to upgrade versions of the software I am using. I know that this computer came installed with 10.6.6 originally, as I have the system discs.
I am wondering if I will encounter any problems with the erasing of the SSD drive.
1. Would I be better to partition the drive and then install the older system?
2. Would I be better to re-install the older system for the original discs and then copy my contents?
3. Would it be ok just to hook up the two computers via a FW 800 cable and then copy the contents over.
Advise on this procedure would be greatly appreciated.

JoeySince you likely want to continue to run 10.6.8 on the new machine, I would just get a USB enclosure for the SSD, boot normally and use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone your old system to the 'new' SSD. Then install the new SSD into your new machine.
I realize that this will take some time - with swapping the drives so much - but, AFAIK, you can't really use Target mode to clone (maybe you can - nothing I've ever tried, though!).

Everyday I travel a lot with motorcycle and always take my Mbp with me ..
My questions:
1. What is the best thing to do if I often carry my Mbp on a motorcycle?
2. Should I sleep/shutdown my Mbp while riding my bike?
3. Is it okay if I often shutdown my Mbp or it will decrease the battery life?
I usually shutdown my Mbp each time I'm on the road with bike .. I'm afraid if I just put on sleep it will damage the Mbp because there's a lot of shock happening when you ride a bike

My ipod touch 4 stops and restarts itself while playing one tune from the Manheim Steamroller Christmas album. It will not work with Tony Bennett's Duets II. It calls each tune a different album. All other music appears to work fine. Both of the mentioned albums were loaded from CD not from Itunes. Any ideas?

Macbook Pro Early 2011 Startup Problems
Hi everyone. I have been having issues with my Macbook Pro starting up since about mid-December. Initially, I had this problem every few weeks, but recently it's been happening about once a week or more.
Some details:
My Macbook Pro is early 2011, 15", and is running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5.
Processor is 2 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory: 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Storage Capacity: 50GB SATA Disk
Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB graphics
There have been multiple issues, but I think they're all related. The laptop works just fine while it's turned on and the screen is working.
The main issue I've had is that I used to always just close the lid when I was finished using the laptop. The first issue is that every once in a while, when I opened the lid, the screen wouldn't turn on. More recently, the screen is getting light, but it's just a blank black screen and I can't do anything; there's no mouse onscreen and none of the keyboard buttons do anything. When this happens I need to use the power button to turn off the Macbook and once I hear it turn off I try to use the power button to turn it back on again. Usually if I hold the power button long enough (about 10 seconds) I hear the startup sound start, but I never get the final chime. I can hear the fans going so I know the laptop isn't dead, but nothing is responsive and nothing comes up on the screen. Sometimes if I leave the Macbook this way the fans start getting really loud like they're working harder than usual. I'm not entirely sure how and why the Macbook finally starts up normally again eventually; I'm starting to think that it's just a matter of waiting and when I come back to it after 5/10 minutes it will eventually startup normally. Once or twice when I had the problem I unplugged the laptop from the power source and flipped the closed laptop so the lid was facing down and the bottom up and left it that way for at least a minute. Everything started up fine when I tried again. However this hasn't worked the last several times I've tried. Overall, the power button just seems really unresponsive when this happens since I need to hold it for longer than usual to even hear any sort of startup noise.
Every time this happens now I try holding down the power button to turn it on, hear it make some noises, but not the startup chime, hold the power button down to turn it off, hear it click off, and try the same thing again. During this I try various things like PRAM and SMC resets and holding down various buttons, but eventually, usually after taking at least a 2 to 3 minute break from this, the laptop finally starts up again like normal and I have no idea how it's working again.
For a while I thought that the SMC reset might have fixed the problem, but it's still happening. I've already taken the Macbook in to the Apple Store twice. The first time they ran all the hardware tests, but everything seemed to be working fine. The second time they reinstalled the software and I was hoping that would fix the problem, but the problem has persisted since the reinstall so I know this probably isn't a software issue. This also isn't caused by the laptop being moved or dropped or anything since often it will work fine, but when I come back to it without moving it an inch, the screen won't turn on again.
For a few days this problem was a daily thing. Every single time I opened the lid the screen wouldn't turn on. Eventually I learned that this was probably because the laptop wasn't registering that the lid had been opened and so it didn't know to turn back on from sleep mode. After reading some articles online I decided to start putting my laptop to sleep by using the shutdown dialogue before closing the lid and this seemed to work for a while, but it no longer seems to be the solution. This doesn't happen every time I open the lid, but it happens enough that it's wasting a lot of my time and energy in trying to get it to work and trying to figure out the problem every time it happens.
There has been a second problem as well and I'm not sure if it's related, but I want to mention it in case it is or in case someone at least has a solution to this problem. The laptop, while on, works just fine. But every once in a while when I'm using regular programs on the laptop, out of nowhere, the screen will suddenly become just a black or gray screen or a white/beige screen with vertical lines and sometimes a buzzing noise to accompany this. When this happens all I can do is restart the laptop with the power button. This has not happened too often to be that much of a hindrance, but it still worries me. (Early on, before the screens with vertical lines, about two or three times the laptop would just shut off by itself without any warning while I was in the middle of something.) I doubt that it's related to a specific program. It's happened while I've used programs I always use. Once when I was using Skype, once for Google Chrome, once for Photoshop. Recently there was also a time when I was playing music on iTunes and doing things on Google Chrome and suddenly the music stopped and the mouse was frozen in place. I've read several online discussions and articles and I think there may be a problem with my video cable, video chip, display driver, or logic board (or logic board battery). I'm nervous about opening up my laptop myself since I'm worried about causing any damage in the process of attempting to fix hardware. I also worry that if I bring it into the Apple Store again it will pass all the hardware tests so I won't be able to get anything fixed.
Does anyone have any suggestions for what steps I can try to fix this? Should I go back to the Apple Store? Is there something specific I should tell them?

There have been many reports of graphics problems with early 2011 Macbook Pros. There is a long-running thread on this forum about it but instead of wading through that -- it's miles long -- take a look at this article, which sums it up, more or less.

You may have already done this, but try starting up in Recovery mode by holding down Command and R keys together, and in the window that appears, select Disk Utility and Continue. Then select your startup disk -- usually called Macintosh HD -- and in First Aid click on Repair Disk.
This will let you know if your disk has any problems.
Also try Safe mode by starting up while holding down the Shift key.
If you go back to the Apple store try to find out if yours is one of the problem computers from early 2011.
P.S. Your disk is probably 500 GB. -
Early 2011 15-inch MacBook pro running a tad bit slow
Had it for a while now and he's been treating me well, but all of a sudden the performance has started going a little wonky. Sometimes when I'm working, it'll just go black-screen (and stop playing music if I was playing any before) and then the login screen will show up, or it'll go to full on sleep where sometimes it'll respond if I press Enter a couple of times, but other times i'll have to close the clamshell and reopen it to be taken back to the login screen. Also, I get the rainbow pinwheel more often than I used to, for longer than I used to, for simple tasks like using Safari or opening Word or trying to access a menu or quit an app. Some apps will take a considerable time to open, and the icon just keeps a-bouncing in the dock until 20 years later when the app eventually opens. I've taken him into the Apple store and had them reset the SMC as that seemed to be the main problem all signs were pointing to. But the symptoms still remain, so I'm hoping I can find some help here from you all. I'm a broke college kid, so I'm not trying to drop huge bucks, but any little bit of info is greatly appreciated.

The only thing that I can really recommend is printing out the kernel panic and taking it and your machine into your local Apple Store/AASP. They can diagnose the problem and give you an estimate for repair (unless you purchased the extended AppleCare Protection Plan - in which case the repair should be free).

My Macbook Pro (15" early 2011, Mountain Lion, but after reinstall i change it to snow leo) got blue screen every i normally booted it. It enter the OS only when it's in safe boot.
I've tried any solution that i got from the internet, such as:
-Reinstalling the OS X (normal install & clean install)
-Reset PRAM and SMC
-Repair Disk Permissions and Repair Disk from Disk Utility (the result is OK. There's no problem)
-Repair Disk Permissions manually (with Command + S at the beginning of booting)
-Checking Hardware from Application Installer DVD (result is OK)
-Checking from Mac Resource Inspector/MRI (result OK)
-Booting from Recovery Disk is same problem, blue screen
All of that solution is not working. My Macbook still got light blue screen and sometimes blue screen with lines after apple logo and spinning wheel is shown.
HDD is in good condition because when it's checked on the other macbook it can be booted. But if you must know, other HDD can't be booted when its plugged to my macbook (blue screen again). If i do safe booting, it works but can't play video and music also photobooth. I got confused with this case.

I recently had a problem with the discrete graphics card (the Radeon GPU) due to overheating, all because a faulty application of the thermal compound in the factory.
In my case, the problem started slowly and intermittently, a few days after a gaming session (Quake 3) of about three hours (at the moment, I didn't realized that could be linked to the problem).
This issue is being actively discussed in another threads in this forum, but so far there's enough evidence that it's been causing similar problems for 2011 MBPs owners: screen corruption, black/blue screens, and in some cases, a total inability to boot. Some of the threads I'm talking about:

So far, and since the problem seems to affect only the discrete GPU (that's why you can boot in safe mode) a possible solution is to disable it by removing some extensions which prevent OS X from loading the Radeon drivers. How To Keep Track of Component Location Within JTextPane
