MBPro 2011 15" thinks my Dell U2410 is a TV

I posted this in macrumors.com forums but wanted to see if anyone here had run into this issue yet.
I got a mini displayport to displayport cable from monoprice and hooked it up last night to my 15" 2011 Macbook Pro and my Dell U2410 24" monitor. It immediately looked terrible as if I was hooked up via HDMI @ 1080p. Sure enough I checked the display settings and it listed my monitor as a TV and was set to 1080p. I was able to select 1920x1800 as a resolution but the picture quality did not improve.
I've read other posts elsewhere that this is most likely a software/firmware problem as other users have booted into Win7 on their machines and the display is working fine at native resolution.
Please Apple fix this issue!

11. How is the Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter different from the Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter?
The Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter works best with displays that operate at dual-link resolutions, which are resolutions above 1920 x 1200. For displays that do not support dual-link DVI resolutions (displays that operate at resolutions of 1920 x 1200 or lower) you should use the Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter instead.

  • MBP 2011 Does Not Enter Display Sleep Over DVI with Dell U2410

    Hi, 15" 2011 MacbookPro (8,2) running 10.7.2 Lion
Using the Apple Mini DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter, the Dell U2410 does not enter Display sleep in Energy Saver mode. Instead, the backlight remains on.
If I manually put the MBP to Sleep, the U2410 successfully enters Display sleep.
When using a MonoPrice Mini DisplayPort-to-DisplayPort cable, the monitor successfully enters Display Sleep. However, the picture signal (no matter what) is dispalyed in YPbPr rather than RGB for some reason. So this thread is in fact 2 problems.
    Any ideas / help?

My late 2007 white MacBook (3,1) running 10.6.8 connected via MiniDVI-to-DVI successfully puts the U2410 to sleep.
So I'm thinking this may be an issue with the MDP/Thunderbolt port on the new 2011 MBP's?

  • Mac mini with Lindy MDP2DP adapter with Dell U2410

    Hello all!
I seem to be having a problem with the following setup. I have a Mac mini (Late 2009) connected using a Lindy Mini DP to DP Adapter into a Dell U2410. When I put the Mac mini into sleep mode, most of the time (99% of the time) the machine does not return from sleep mode. When I trigger a wake, the display wakes up briefly but then enters power save mode. The machine looks as if it is on but is unresponsive and the display remains in sleep mode. In addition to this, the machine does the exact same thing when upgrading the graphics drivers in Bootcamp Windows 7.
This behaviour does not occur when the display is connected by DVI via the mini DVI port. Has anyone else experienced this problem? I have had the mini's logic board replaced to no avail. Can dodgy displayport adapters and monitors attached to the machine really cause this kind of problem?

I have a very similar problem and I would love to find a solution. I have a mid 2001 mac mini (unibody) server, and I am driving 2x Dell U2410s (Rev A01's). I love the screens, and the mini is able to drive them well enough.
I am driving one via the included HDMI->DVI adapter, and the other via a cheapie miniDP->HDMI->DVI adapter. I like to have both run via DVI because the user has much more control over color settings within the display while using HDMI. These settings are not present in HDMI mode. I haven't tried dual DP modes.
The problem I have is that when the computer puts the displays to sleep - only the display connected to the HDMI port on the mini enters power save mode. The display that is connected to the mini-DP does not enter power-save mode, and displays a message that there is 'No DVI-D 1 cable.' (or something equivalent).
I am not sure why one of these ports is able to properly enter sleep, and the other is not - but it is very frustrating. i have to physically turn off one of the displays in order to prevent the backlight from being on 24/7. I use the computer as a server for various things, and it is on 24/7, when I'm only at it for a few hours a day.
I have tried changing DVI-D ports around, and using HDMI instead of DVI - and the outcome is the same. This problem must be with how the computer 'tells' the display connected to to the miniDP to sleep. This problem is quite frustrating, but not enough so to abandon either the mini or the dual U2410 setup - just frustrating.
Does anyone know of a way to change the method by which the computer 'tells' the display to sleep? I am certainly no expert in computer language, programming or otherwise.
I have not tested this with my MBPro, as I forgot it in another state at the moment (it's safe - i live half in TX, half in PA). I will report my findings when I test the MBPro, and perhaps come to some sort of conclusion.
    Thanks.

  • 12 bit output with Dell U2410?

    Hello,
Can anyone tell me if I can get the full 12-bits per channel output afforded by the new Dell U2410 with my late 2008 Unibody Macbook Pro? Dell claims it can produce 1.07 billion colors, which I assume to mean that it has 12 bit output and not just 12 bit internal processing, or am I wrong to assume that?
My plan would be to connect it via a mini-displayport to displayport cable.
Just the other day i could swear that the tech spec page for the U2410 claimed it had full 12 bit output, but they've redesigned the page and it claims 12 bit 'internal' processing, but they're still claiming over a billion colors.
Here is a link to the Dell page for the monitor:
    http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/Monitors/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=e n&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=320-8277
    Thanks,
    Scott

I didn't really expect it to work, but figured it was worth a try. It's very sad to me that Apple still wants to command a lead in the graphic design design industry and yet they aren't supporting a greater bit depth for their displays. When photoshopping images, I have to make guesses about what the output will look like in the darker color ranges because of posterization that occurs on my display but not in the final output. Printers today can and do support 16 bit output but the display hardware does not.
Perhaps I can find a graphics card/drivers that can work on the Mac Pro that supports > 8 bits per color channel, but I don't even know how to go about figuring that out. I suspect it'll require many hours of research and it might be for naught. I'd hate to buy a Windows box just for editing images.
So, for anyone coming across this message: You cannot, at this time and to the best of my knowledge, get 12 bit color depth with the Dell U2410 display. The display looks great, so I think it's a great alternative to the super-reflective Apple 24" Cinema display, but don't expect to get any additional color range.

    Hello...
I've got a macbookpro 15' with snow leopard. I've just connected a second display screen (DELL U2410) through a mini display to DVI adapter.
On te Dell, when i look a photo in the finder/cover flow, the reds are satured. And when i look the picture on "preview", it looks normal.
    I've took a capture of this :

On the left, the picture with preview, on the right the same picture on finder.
    It's Amazing ?

Try creating a new color profile (and then going back, if creating a new one doesn't solve it). Go to System Preferences > Display > Color

  • Dell u2410 BANDING issues

I use my DELL U2410 as my external monitor and I got some banding issues in some of the color. Especially in Blue and Black. It looks very pixelated.
The driver provided by DELL is only for Windows and I tried to look for somehting online to see if there is a driver out there but couldnt find any.
    My display settings are
    Colors: Millions
Refresh Rate: 60 Hertz (NTSC) (I cant change to PAL and I am in europe). Could this be it??
    Option: Overscan is ticked.
    Any idea guys?

Have you tried a new cable?

  • Desktop looks bad on Dell U2410

It's strange...movies look great, but the desktop UI itself looks fairly grainy.  I've messed with the settings but there isn't really much there to change.  Any suggestions?
    thanks!

The issue you are having is HDMI to HDMI is not sending the correct Color Space signal to the Dell U2410.

  • Dell u2410 with mac book pro - ports in the monitor does not work....

    Hi,
I got a DELL u2410 with my mac book pro and the reader or the USB port is not working. How come the laptop doesnt detect this even if the screen works?

Not seen the 2410 - but previous USB devices in the screens required a standard A-B usb cable from the computer to the screen - look for the squarish USB socket on the monitor somewhere, probably tucked up under the lip where all the connectors push in vertically upwards (on previous Dell WS screens)

  • Hook IMac pro to second monitor, Dell U2410.  Need help on setting from the laptop.

What setting are needed to set up external monitor Dell U2410 monitor.  I am make progress but still need to need the setting internal to the Imac Pro.
I am transmitting to the monitor.  The screen saver is there.  Hit F3 key causes anknowledgement. but open web pages they do not transfer.
I have used the system preferance which acknowledges the presence of the monitor.
Need suggestion if you have them.
    Thanks,

The external hard drive should mount on your old iMac through USB. USB2 is backwards-compatible, only consequence is that you'll have to be patient with the long wait for your files to copy over the slower USB1 or 1.1.
Another alternative is to directly connect the two Macs via the ethernet cable. Instructions are here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh914.html
Note that you most likely need a crossover ethernet cable (versus a standard straight-though cable), based on this article:

  • Can I get a Dell U2410 Monitor to work with a MacBook Pro?

I rashly bought this monitor. It looks lovely but it has a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1200, which I could not get with the VGA connection, and Dell do not make drivers for the Mac at all. Is there any chance of getting this monitor to work properly with my MacBook Pro? I found the Dell support site extremely difficult to penetrate, so I put the monitor back in its box and am going to sell it if I can't easily find out how to use it.
    Any advice is welcome.

I think you are using the wrong adapter. Higher resolutions require the use of a mini display port to DVI or DVI-D Dual link adapter. A VGA adapter will not do the job.
And I assume you are trying "extended" and not "mirrored" mode. What model Macbook Pro do you have?

  • Dell U2410, works DPMS for you?

    Hello
I recently switched from monitor Dell Ultrasharp 2209WA to Dell Ultrasharp U2401 (Rev A05). Its relly great!, the only issue I have is that it does not enter in any of three DPMS modes. DPMS modes are detected OK
NOUVEAU(0): DPMS capabilities: StandBy Suspend Off
    xset dpms force off
    (or standby or suspend)
[drm] nouveau 0000:01:00.0: Setting dpms mode 3 on tmds encoder (output 1)
I guess should be a monitor firmware issue (its has lots of inputs, who knows...)
Is anyone with this issue? Looking on internet there is a similar issue [#1] (in this case looks like monitor acts as not cable connected, in my case this does not happens, if I try to go menu, says "there is no signal comming from your computer") I will ask to Dell support.
    Thanks.

For anyone interested this is an issue with nouveau driver in my case, using nvidia works fine. Anyway I am back with nouveau, its fit better for my usage.

  • Macbook Pro 13'' Late 2011 2 SSD RAID 0

    Hello everyone,
This is my first message in the forum so I would like to introduce myself. My name is Guillem and I am studiny engineering in audiovisual systems.
I want to get 2 SSD to change the original hard drive (which is ********) and the optical drive and configure them as RAID 0. I have checked and I have link speed of 6GB in both ports.
    So here are my questions:
1- If I want to keep my OS (with all the apps installed), can I do it using Time Machine and then restoring it from it? If not, how can I do it?
2- What SSD would you recommend me?
3- Both SSD must be of the same size, correct?
4- If my processor is clocked at 2.3GHz and it is an i5, would it prevent the SSD running at max performance?
5- I have my RAM uploaded to 8GB, would it be enough?
    That's all I think.
    Thank you.
    Guillem

Stay away from OCZ. I like intel, not the fastest but reliable. The 530 series or 335 series is down in price. Mechanical hard drive for scratch just get a one terabyte 5400 rpm but you'll need a data doubler to frame it in that optical bay. You can do the job yourself. I'm assuming you are using a MBPro 2011 then good to go.

  • MBP Retina bad display on external Dell display

My MBPr LCD display is great: crisp and clear.
However, when I connect my desktop Dell display, the result is washed out and difficult to read fonts.
I've tried with both mini-DVI and mini-VGA.   The mini-VGA is perhaps marginally better, but in both
    cases is borderline unusable.
    Any clues?
    Thanks!

I've a 2011 MBA, 2008 MBP and a Dell U2410 24" 1920x1200-native setup with zero problems, until I replace the aging MBP with rMBP. Now I get the same issue as the OP.
I've searched extensively, but "blurry images, washed-out colors, smudgy text" isn't very scientific/concrete so it's not easy to have a clear-cut case. On this same issue (I believe), I've found the following threads:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4119545
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=15565120
I'm trying to document the issue as much as possible, with photos taken off the display. (I've found screen capture doesn't work). They're posted at http://goo.gl/XLdMf
    Further background
The same mini-DP to DP cable is used to connect MBA, rMBP (and my previous 2008 MBP) and have been in service since I've the Dell. No issues at all, except the rMBP.
I've tried HDMI-HDMI from rMBP to Dell. Same lousy display quality.
The Dell U2410 accepts DP, HDMI, DVI and VGA inputs.
On the monitor itself, I can press a few buttons to ask for display info. In both cases, the Dell reports it is displaying in 1920x1200 @ 60Hz. (So this rules out the problem of trying to display 1920x1080 on a 1920x1200 native display).
I've done a Factory Reset on the Dell, to no avail.
    When the MacBookAir4,2 (2011 MBA) is connected, a range of resolutions is available:1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p, 1920x1200x 1600x1200, 1600x1000, 1344x1008, 1344x840, 1280x1024, 1280x960, 1280x800, 1024x768, 1024x640, 960x600, 800x600, 800x500, 720x576, 640x480
    When MacBookPro10,1 (rMBP) is connected, only 3 choices present itself:1920x1200, 1600x1000, 1280x800
Comparing the 2 Colors tab photos, notice how, when the rMBP is connected, the fonts have a white shadow all around the black fonts.
Comparing the 2 Display tab photos, look at the "1920" in the selected "1920x1200" option. Notice how, when the rMBP is connected, the bottom of the "1", "9", "2", "0" are smudged together

  • Thunderbolt Daisy Chain to a DisplayPort Monitor (Dell 2713HM)?

I have a Mac mini (2011) that supports my Dell monitor (2713HM 27'') at its maximum reslution of 2560x1440 only through a Thunderbolt to Mini-Displayport cable. As this Mac has only Thunderbolt as a fast connection for backup drives I have to add a Thunderbolt chain with the backup device in the middle and the Dell monitor at the end of the chain if I want bakcups faster than Firewire 800 or USB 2.0 (the other possible connections with this Mac). My first attempt with such a setup was the LaCie eSATA Hub. But this does not feed the display signals through, the monitor stays black. Checked in the store with a genuin Thunderbolt monitor from Apple the daisy chain worked.
Can my chain work at all? Is only the Lacie the wrong drive hub? Would it work with a Seagate Desktop Hub, for instance STAE122 or STAE 127?
Can I trick the Mac under Bootcamp as OS to use HDMI for the monitor? Dell officially says that the monitor can only accept 1900x1080 over HDMI, but some have fiddled wth different computers with custom settings that worked with some Monitors but mostly under Linux and to Dell 2711.

FWIW, STAE129 is the current version TB adapter
that is self powered and has TB daisy chain port.
STAE122 and STAE127 are older versions and
not the current model, though there may be stock of
these around.  As to whether this will solve your issue,
    I don't know.

The MacMini HDMI port is hardware limited to 1980x1200.
