MBPro keyboard like MacPro?

Hi All.
I have a relatively new macbookpro and notice that the F keys have little icons on them. I've started to use these utilities and now notice that my mac pro keyboard does not have these and I'm wondering if I can "map" the macpro keyboard to behave like the macbookpro. is this possible?
thanks.

I think I see on the Keyboard Tab that there is a "Use all F1, F2 etc keys as standard function keys: When this option is selected, press the Fn key to use the special features printed on each key.". If I check this it looks like it will make the MBPro keyboard behave the same way as my MacPro keyboard perhaps?
No. What that option is for, is if you have apps that use the Function (F) keys in the traditional way. Traditionally, F keys were used as shortcuts, this practice goes back at least 30 years. For example, I use Lightroom, which lets me use the F5, F6, F7, and F8 keys as shortcuts for showing or hiding various panels. I do that all the time, so that option lets F5 apply to that app instead of changing my keyboard brightness, which I adjust rarely.
Another example is if you run Windows on your Mac in virtualization, you might want F1 to open Help and F4 to close apps. Or if you would rather use F5 for refreshing the browser window (the standard refresh shortcut in every Web browser known to civilization...except Safari).
Sometimes, you want some of the Function keys to do what's printed on them, but you want other keys to be used by an app. For that, you can use FunctionFlip (free) to make just some F keys behave the other way.

Do you know what these keys will do if I check this option and hit them /without/ pressing Fn? I mean, this means they do nothing and they only work if I hit the Fn key at the same time?
If you don't press Fn, the keys become controlled by the current application. For example. If you turn on the "Use all F1, F2 keys as standard function keys..." and you are using Firefox and you press F5, F5 will refresh the browser window, not change the Mac setting printed on it. If the current application does not use F5 for anything, it will do nothing.
Pressing Fn merely swaps whatever happens when the preference is on and off. If you turned the pref on so that F5 refreshes the window in Firefox, but at the moment you would rather make it change keyboard brightness (that's what's printed on my F5 key), you press Fn+F5 and it will temporarily override the preference and use the other function just that one time. Or, of course, if you turned the pref off so that F5 changes keyboard brightness but you want to refresh a Firefox window with F5, again you would press Fn+F5, but since the preference is off, Fn+F5 now does the opposite thing.

ALSO. Do you know how to use the Keyboard Shortcuts Section? I've only been in here long enough to see "Dashboard and Dock", "Expose and Spaces", "Front Row" etc, etc and it seems like there is simply a list to the right of each when they are selected and you can check or uncheck these? I have them all checked, does this make sense?
Double-click a listed key shortcut on the right and it will highlight. While highlighted, you can press a different key and it will change the shortcut. For more info:

Not everything can be reassigned in there. If it won't let you remap something you want to remap, you might have to use other keyboard shortcut software to do it, like QuicKeys.

I love my Iphone (old model) and all the applications! Wish Apple would create a small keyboard like the old Newtons used that might fold in half and fit in a pocket. typing on the Iphone is such a CHORE!

  • What is the keyboard like?

    I;m considering purchasing a Macbook, I've currently got a 12" Powerbook.
I'm not too sure about the keyboard though. Is it nice to use as it doesn't look as good as the Powerbook one. Not sure I like the spaces between the keys. What does everyone think?

JoeyR is correct about the spacing.
My two cents about the keyboard: It is the best keyboard I have ever used. I hardly ever typo anything on it. It feels great to use - the keys take much less force to push than my friend's Apple Pro Keyboard, making typing much easier and making it so you hardly ever omit letters (which happens to me all the time on the Pro keyboard). My typing was never this accurate or fast before I started using this keyboard. I got used to it in about two seconds and now I love it. Now whenever I use my mom's PC keyboard, I feel cheated...lol :P

  • Create a keyboard like the japanese one?

    hi everybody!
I am a linguist and I am working with a quite odd system of writing, I have created a special font and now I would need a keyboard to write it.
The input method should be similar to the method to write hiragana/kanji, that is one write the phonetic spelling, and the computer offer a series of ideographic (taken from a dictionary, I think) match among which the user can choose the right form.
Ok, I have already created such an application with realbasic, but it would be nice if it were possible to put it in the top in the form of a standard keyboard..
is it possible to do somethink like that?
that is, it is possible to create a new keyboard with a japanese-like input method? and if yes, how can I do?
    Thank in advance!

    Hi,
Somehow, almost understand what you want to achieve, mostly, I think. But you really need to explain more.
Forgive me, but it sounds like you do not really know exactly what you want. (in term of programming)
What do you want to say by :
"Ok, I have already created such an application with realbasic, but it would be nice if it were possible to put it in the top in the form of a standard keyboard.."
(This is the part I did not understand)
Did you mean an input methode, like kotoeri for japanese under MAC OS X ?
Have you ever programmed for mac OS X (carbon or cocoa) before ? If yes, then this should be very close to what you want : take a look on the side of the accessibility API. There are already applications available that can substitute user's text input with other text. For instance, replacing :
YUME by 夢 (Hint : you need to make your application trusted)
Is is what you were looking for ?

    Hi,
Can you provide the full model number for your laptop?  If you don't know the full model number, see The HP Guide To Finding Your Product Model Number.
Also, what Operating System are you using?  Windows 7, Windows 8?
I've provided some links below for Windows 7.  First do a hardware test and see if the keyboard is functional, see Testing for Hardware Failures , and look under Component tests and do the keyboard test.  If there is a problem with the keyboard that requires service, it should come out in that test.  Also take a look at Notebook Keyboard Troubleshooting, and since you are having problems with specific keys, look at the Stuck Keys section, and try to reinstall the drivers which is the last section of that document.
    Good Luck,

  • 17" and 15" MBpro Keyboards Interchangeable?

Are the two keyboards interchangeable because I plan on buying a used keyboard from a 17" MBpro and wanted to make sure it will be a direct fit?
    TIA

    The Apple Service manual isn't much help here, it says;
    "Keyboard:
The keyboard is the same design as shipped with the PowerBook G4 (15-inch/17-inch Double Layer SD) except the flex cables. In particular, the keyboard backlight flex has changed. As such no other internal keyboard is compatible with the MacBook Pro"
My guess would be the 15" @ 17" MBP keyboards are interchangeable as they will have the right flex connectors.

  • Mapping buttons from imac Bluetooth Keyboard to Macpro

I tried a friend's new mini bluetooth keyboard (one that sells with new imac) on my Macpro, and some of the buttons do not seem to map correctly. Example: volume was effecting expose. Is it just not meant to be used with anything other than an imac, or can the buttons be properly mapped?

  • Anyone knows if Apple will make keyboards like their laptops?

I recently got my Power Mac G5 and noticed right away how different the keyboard is when compared to my PowerBook G4. The PowerBook was the best keyboard I've ever used both on PC and Mac.
I believe the reason I like the laptop's keyboard so much is that the keys seem to be spaced out more than the one included with my Power Mac. The keys are also a lot thinner and they seem to not sink down as much.
Before getting my PowerBook I used to have carpal tunnel pain in my wrist, but after getting it I could go hours without any pain. I really don't like those curved ergonomic keyboards so does anyone know if Apple has an external keyboard that is the same as my PowerBook? I'm starting to redevelop carpal tunnel pain in my wrist from using my Power Mac's keyboard.
I believe the cramped close together keys is what's causing carpal tunnel pain, so if some manufacture would just space out the keys more instead of forcing us to use weirdly shaped ergonomic keyboards then I would appreciate it. Does anyone know if such a keyboard exist? One that had all the special Apple only keys would be even better.
    Power Mac G5, PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Apple does not discuss unannounced products,
therefore any guess would be pure speculation, which
is a violation of the terms of use of these
    discussion forums.
Sorry, I did not know that. I'll keep that in mind for the future.
If you'd like a fullsize keyboard with the feel of a
laptop keyboard, then have a look at Macally:
    http://macally.com/spec/usb/input_device/icekey.html
Thanks! I believe this is what I'm looking for. I'm surprised that Apple doesn't have one themselves since they basically created the PowerBook keyboard. I can't be the only one who notices the comfort difference between Apple's standard keyboard and their PowerBook laptops.
This is also not because it's a laptop, since I've used several PC laptops before too. I don't think it's a coincidence that Apple made their PowerBook keyboards different. As I've said earlier my PowerBook is the most comfortable keyboard I've ever used...and I've used many different keyboards including those ergonomic ones. Anyway, thanks again. I'm going to try out this keyboard from Macally.

  • My husband hits the keyboard like an old typewriter. We have a new Mac. Will pounding damage the keyboard?

Will it damage a new IMAC keyboard to pound on it like an old typewriter? Old habits die hard.

All those micro switches don't require hammer force blows.
So when the keyboard fails, be ready to get another.
Reminds me of a neighbor years ago with a PC and while
the super-slow dialup internet took long durations to load
up pages, he would be clicking on the mouse button.
And then the computer OS would freeze. After a few months,
happened I was there several times to witness & said zip,
finally I suggested there was a cause & effect going on and
hinted the computer would not work faster while trying to
process a mouse click at nothing, (spinning wheel already)
or his hammering on the keyboard in a rush, with slow ISP.
Of course, half their problem was their cheep PC with windows 1.
At least with a new computer, you could talk the reseller out
of a new replacement keyboard within the complementary
plan. For extensive demands, get the optional AppleCare.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Recording music with onscreen keyboard (Like in garage band)

    Help!
I just went through the whole tutorial using the tutorial.iso and read through the manual in LE7. now when I start a new project. I can not get any audio from the on screen keyboard (caplocks key). I just want to compose simple music scores like how you can when recording in garage band using its on screen key board and when you record in GB you can actually see the notes painted on screen when you select the music instrument -ex: "reflective strings". Also when I go into the matrix window and I just want to "draw" notes onto the grid or press the keys in this screen, it won't even let me do that. Can someone tell me how I can get this to work and how I can get it to record on screen? Is anybody else having this problem? I Just want to do the most simple task as that. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

Yes, but see the thing is, I am not getting any audio "at all" when trying to record any kind of software instument. I can hear sound in the tutorial, but not when I start a "new" project from scratch. Is there something I am doing wrong? I can see the meter registering the sound and some times notse will be writing on the screen in the audio object, but not sound emits. Can you tell me if it is the audio object I am on? Even when selecting the default instrument such as the violin or the piano, I still can not hear anything at all when using the on screen keyboard (caplocks key). If you or anyone can help that would be great.

  • FCP keyboard like Avid Keyboard

I’ve been looking all over for 2 things in FCP that I use to use a lot in Avid.
    Extend Edit.
I found a key called “extend edit” in FCP but it doesn’t work for me. I mapped it to my keyboard and it doesn't seem to stretch out the select source to the in point or out point.
    Toggle Source Tracks.
Like our number keys 4-7 on the Avid. Toggling the source audio and video tracks so that you can cut it in to the correct track in the timeline. I'm talking about linking the source video to timeline video track or source audio to timeline audio. So I can hit a button, have them link up, and overwrite an edit in my timeline.
    thanks

As Steve said extend edit works differently. Instead of looking at the IN or OUT point set FCP looks to where the time marker is for the selected edit. Kinda the same only different!
As for the V and A select keys, since you can map almost anything in FCP you can map those keys to where you want them. FCP is a bit different in it's way of selecting tracks though. Toggle Auto Select is close to what in Avid is turning tracks on and off.
I have mapped a FCP very close to my Avid settings (here's a pic on my Flickr account) as I think an Avid keyboard is much more efficient.

  • Flash with wmode="transparent" doesn't work with non-US keyboard (like FF)

Safari has the same issue as FireFox (which they are finally fixing) :
    https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=347185
If you use Flash with wmode="transparent" then it treats all keyboards as if they are US keyboards.
    For example try G.ho.st http://G.ho.st/vc.html with a non-US keyboard

I too am having issues. I am using Shockwave Flash 11.4.402.287 on Firefox 16.0.1. I am running on Windows 7 Enterprise. Disabling the plugin allows me to load pages quickly, but I am not able to view videos or play games. Firefox freezes upon loading a page that uses Flash. It remains frozen for an unacceptable length of time, then it will unfreeze on its own accord. The freeze affects the entire computer. I cannot interact with the desktop or the Windows start bar, and can only close Firefox by forcibly ending the "firefox.exe" process via Task Manager.
This is not the first version of Firefox that has displayed this problem to me. Firefox 15 also froze upon using Flash.
I had hoped that the latest Firefox update would solve this problem, but apparently not. Until then, I am forced to use Chrome, which is quite inconvenient for me as I am not at all familiar with that browser and am constantly clicking the settings button when I want to to go to my home page.
These freezes are incredibly frustrating and annoying. If Mozilla wishes to build a better Internet, they should try to make their browser a program that doesn't tempt me towards rage-quitting YouTube.
