    Every now and then ALL input devices stop working,ths is not temporary - a forced shut down is needed
    What happens is that I am happily working away when suddenly all input devices stop working with no warning, so the light goes off on my Wacom (Intuous 3) tablet, the keyboard and the apple trackpad  are not responded to i.e. the cursor stays where it was on the screen prevously and I am left with the only option to restart by holding down the power button

    If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. This procedure is a diagnostic  test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything suggested in this comment.
    Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed, as well as some other aspects of the configuration that may be related to the problem.
    Don’t be alarmed by the seeming complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out. Here's a brief summary: In each of two steps, you copy a line of text from this web page into a window in another application. You wait about a minute. Then you paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is copy; paste; paste again. That's all there is to it. Details follow.
    You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken while booted in “normal” mode. If the system is now running in safe mode and is bootable in normal mode, reboot as usual.
    Below are instructions to enter UNIX shell commands. They do nothing but produce human-readable output. However, you need to think carefully before running any program at the behest of a stranger on a public message board. If you question the safety of the procedure suggested here — which you should — search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them.
    The commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it.
    Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. Step 1 should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
    Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
    Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    PB=/usr/libexec/PlistBuddy; PR () { [[ "$o" ]] && printf '\n%s:\n%s\n' "$1" "$o"; }; PF () { o=$($PB -c Print "$2" | awk -F'= ' \/$3'/{print $2}'); PR "$1"; }; PN () { [[ $o -eq 0 ]] || printf "\n%s: %s\n" "$1" $o; };{ system_profiler SPSoftwareDataType | sed '8!d;s/^ *//'; o=$(system_profiler SPDiagnosticsDataType | sed '5,6!d'); fgrep -q P <<< "$o" && o=; PR "POST"; o=$(( $(vm_stat | awk '/Pageo/{sub("\\.",""); print $2}')/256 )); [[ $o -gt 1024 ]] && printf "\nPageouts: %s MiB\n" $o; o=$(kextstat -kl | grep -v com\\.apple | cut -c53- | cut -d\< -f1); PR "Loaded extrinsic kernel extensions"; o=$(launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)|\.[0-9]+$/{print $3}'); PR "Loaded extrinsic user agents"; o=$(launchctl getenv DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES); PR "Inserted libraries"; o=$(crontab -l); PR "User cron tasks"; o=$(cat /e*/lau*); PR "Global launchd configuration"; o=$(cat ~/.lau*); PR "Per-user launchd configuration"; PF "Global login items" /L*/P*/loginw* Path; PF "Per-user login items" L*/P*/*loginit* Name; PF "Safari extensions" L*/Saf*/*/E*.plist Bundle | sed 's/\..*$//;s/-[1-9]$//'; o=$(find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 \) | wc -l); PN "Restricted user files"; cd; o=$(find -L /S*/L*/E* {,/}L*/{A*d,Compon,Ex,In,Keyb,Mail/Bu,P*P,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo}* -type d -name Contents -prune | while read d; do ID=$($PB -c 'Print :CFBundleIdentifier' "$d/Info.plist"); ID=${ID:-No bundle ID}; egrep -qv "^com\.apple\.[^x]|Accusys|ArcMSR|ATTO|HDPro|HighPoint|driver\.stex|hp-fax|JMicron|microsoft\.MDI|print|SoftRAID" <<< $ID && printf '%s\n\t(%s)\n' "${d%/Contents}" "$ID"; done); PR "Extrinsic loadable bundles"; o=$(find /u*/{,*/}lib -type f -exec sh -c 'file -b "$1" | grep -qw shared && ! codesign -v "$1"' {} {} \; -print); PR "Unsigned shared libraries"; o=$(system_profiler SPFontsDataType | egrep "Valid: N|Duplicate: Y" | wc -l); PN "Font problems"; for d in {,/}L*/{La,Priv,Sta}*; do o=$(ls -A "$d"); PR "$d"; done; } 2> /dev/null | pbcopy; echo $'\nStep 1 done'
    Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
    The command may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. Wait for the line "Step 1 done" to appear below what you entered. The output of the command will be automatically copied to the Clipboard. Paste into a reply to this message. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Remember that you must be logged in as an administrator for this step. Do as in Step 1 with this line:
    PR () { [[ "$o" ]] && printf '\n%s:\n%s\n' "$1" "$o"; }; { o=$(sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix\.cron)|org\.(amav|apac|calendarse|cups|dove|isc|ntp|post[fg]|x)/{print $3}'); PR "Loaded extrinsic daemons"; o=$(sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook); PR "Login hook"; o=$(sudo crontab -l); PR "Root cron tasks"; o=$(syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|pagin|timed? ?o' | tail -n25 | awk '/:/{$4=""; print}'); PR "Log check"; } 2>&- | pbcopy; echo $'\nStep 2 done'
    This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
    Note: Step 2 might not produce any output, in which case the Clipboard will be empty.
    You can then quit Terminal.
    To prevent confusion, I'll repeat: When you type your password in the Terminal window, you won't see what you're typing.
    Note: If you don’t have a login password, set one before taking Step 2. If that’s not possible, skip the step.
    Important: If any personal information, such as your name or email address, appears in the output of these commands, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    Remember, Steps 1 and 2 are all copy-and-paste — type only your password. Also remember to post the output.

  • [SOLVED] All input devices off through synaptics config file

    Hello guys,
    It seems that while I was experimenting with synaptics configuration file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-synaptics.conf) I turned all input devices off, and as you may assume I can't change this.
    Is there a way to fix this issue?
    I was trying to use an live CD and change the config files but I realized that are read-only files.
    Thank you very much in advance.

    Thank you for your answer WonderWoofy,
    I tried to switch to a tty but it is not possible, it seems to me that the keyboard is not even active as well as the touchpad or connected usb mouse's.
    Is there a way to start Arch directly without X, maybe modifying something at the GRUB sequence or during loading of the services an so son?
    How can I do it?
    Thank you.

  • Pressing the bottom of new MBP retina makes crunching/clicking sound

    When i gently press the bottom of my mbp retina i can hear crunching and clicking sounds on one of the bottom sides (right side if the notebook is upside down). The other side of the bottom doesn't squeak at all. Have you guys faced this problem? Do they replace notebooks with assembly issues?

    It's covered by a 1 year warranty, you can make an appointment at your local Apple Store or AASP to have it looked at. Sounds at best are hard to troubleshoot. If you suspect the HD please check out the Failing hard drive sounds link.

  • Can't left click in some apps! Help!!

    After upgrading to Mavericks, i can't left click on multiple apps including mails, maps etc. Even magic mouse cannot help. Any help / idea is greatly appreciated!

    @macjack
    Thanks for your reply and help. I tried the above, there werent many things in my login items. I have also deleted my startup items but even with logout or restart, the problem persist.
    What i noticed when during mail app starts, i was able to left click on one email when the app is loading, but it ceased to function when it fully loads up... strange...
    I did a recovery install of maverick and it yield the same results... 2hrs of my time wasted... btw, i upgraded from m lion (which worked great for me)... contemplating a reinstall of m.lion instead of using mvricks.
    Seems like every road of a free os is always bumpy...

  • MBP Retina Display, Cluster of Dead Pixels

    I have a MacBook Pro with a Retina display and when watching a movie I noticed a couple dead pixels when the screen was dark. I googled and found a screen tester that changes the screen color and while doing the test and I found the problem to be MUCH worst. I have quite a large cluster of pixels that look to be dying. Unfortunately at the time I could not spend the extra $350 on Apple Care this notebook was expensive enough.
    My question is what can I do at this point? My warranty is up and per the Apple website I can no longer purchase Apple Care because the warranty is up. I did notice that A LOT of people are having the exact same issue I am but the ones that reply are those that have Apple Care and end up getting a new display.
    Has anyone who does not have Apple Care had this issue and have taken it to Apple??? What was the result being such a large problem did they offer to fix it or do anything to resolve the problem??? Is there a recall on this problem???

    Where do you live? In Europe for instance a reseller cannot get away with a 1 year warranty.

  • Archive process hung on all cisco devices - help

    I have Archive setup on all of my devices in the enviornment to archive configs via tftp to a server on the network.  A team mate of mine elected to down that box because the "did no know what it was."  Now I have a process hung on every one of my cisco devices that is preventing the archive from performing.  I am hoping to find a way to stop this process short of a rebuild of every on of my devices.

  • Are shuttle/jog type inputs devices helpful?

    I remember the good ole days editing on VHS tape. A shuttle/jog wheel was worth it's weight in gold.
    Are these still useful? Any particular ones?

    I bought a while ago a Shuttle Pro...
    .. which, imho, is a useful tool... you can set the many buttons to any action indivually, but foremost, that 'analog ff/rew' is an excellent feature..
    I'm very much right-hand orientated, so, I'm moving the mouse with right, but my left hand can easiely scroll, set in- and out-points etc (I'm using the device for FCE too.....)

  • Apple policy on MBP Retina with dead pixel

    Hi
    New MBP retina (<90 days) with dead pixel just appeared 2 days ago.
    Did anyone experience this and what's the Apple policy on this ?
    Thanks
    V

    Call Customer Support and have them replace the screen. They will send you a box to mail to depot.
    I had a MacBook Pro with a dead pixel and left speaker out. My MBP was 4 years old, definently out of warrenty. I called Apple, and they replaced the display without charge.
    I received the box on Wednesday, mailed it on Thursday (FedEx) and got my fixed MBP back on Friday, same week! This is why I still buy Apple.
    When calling customer service, stress that you have more than one pixel out, as you probably have a cluster. Have them do the repair at depot not at any Apple Store. Make sure, since you are still with 90 days, fix it for free.
    Should not be a problem.

  • MBP Retina 15" Unused for 2 weeks now slow, unresponsive?

    Hi all,
    Hoping someone can help. I've been away on vacaction for 2 weeks - before I left I shut down my MBP retina and left it in a drawer.
    Upon returning today it booted up normally, then immediately

    any chance it is trying to backup to a TimeMachine drive?  That can make things slow?  If it is the icon in the menu bar will be turning.
    What about indexing the drive?  This would be indicated by the magnifying glass for Spotlight pulsing in the menu bar (very far right).

  • Fire a left click when the right button is pressed

    I am working on a small program with a text area and mouse functionality. I have all my listeners in place but I need one additional feature and I am unsure how to go about implementing it. I want to be able to fire a left click when the right button is pressed.
    The reason is because right clicking does not move the caret around the text area. I need to be able to move the caret with a right click so I can then invoke another method to do some other functionality that is associated with the right click. Any method is acceptable as long as a right click will result in the caret being able to move to a location much like a left click can.
    all help is appreciated. Thanks.

    I'm not sure if this is "better", and my guess is that it isn't, but how about using a Robot object here to create a left mouse press and release? For instance,

        area.addMouseListener(new MyMouseListener());
      public JComponent getComponent()

            if (robot != null)
              robot.mousePress(InputEvent.BUTTON1_MASK);
              robot.mouseRelease(InputEvent.BUTTON1_MASK);
      private static void createAndShowUI()
        JFrame frame = new JFrame("RightClickAsLeft");
        frame.getContentPane().add(new RightClickAsLeft().getComponent());

  • Left click on early '08 MBP not working

    don't think you can imagine how frustrating this is until it happens to you.
    basically, yesterday my left click stopped working. restart/shutdown/safe mode atleast ten times didn't help. my magic mouse and magic trackpad were paired and the left click on them didn't work either. about an hour and half later the problem randomly fixed itself and I was able to use the left click until today. today the same thing happened about three times (I currently can't left click). I was one click away from reinstalling Lion, but the problem was exactly that, I was one click away and couldnt get past a screen where I needed to left click. now, about 30 minutes ago I realized I have touchserver installed on my mbp and iphone. I was able to get it to launch through spotlight and what do you know, the left click works when using touchserver. since touchserver connects to my mbp through wifi, I believe the issue may have something to do with my paired magic mouse and trackpad (as of right now I unpaired them from the computer). I can probably reinstall Lion now that I have the left click working via touchserver, but am hoping someone has a simpler solution here. would really appreciate if someone can help me out here.
    edit
    just to clarify, all other functionality on trackpad, magic mouse, magic trackpad works (right click, scrolling, etc..)

    This is totaly redicilous.  They have been having issues like this since 2010.  I have re-installed my OS at least 3 times since I bought this computer.
    I never thought I'd say this but I may be switching back to Windows.  I have 2012 Macbook Pro 2.7 16GB of memory and 500 GB ssd.  What a piece of junk this is.  I have been working of Macs since 2004, I am not new to them.  I am also a computer engineer, so I am getting tired of this.  Apple has all but abondoned everything except iOS.
    Getting real tired of this.  Apple you better get it together.  For the money I spent on this one laptop I could have gotten A Windows Tablet and Laptop.  Possibly a phone too.

  • Left click in input feild produces menu

    Regardless of screen or Internet location this problem is extremely annoying. Many times I am trying to change the words in a search input field. Clicking on the left button to highlight or highlight drag a number of words fails but a menu which looks similar to the add-in menu for Tab Mix Plus appears. Tab mix plus has no entry for turning on a left click menu or turning off a left click menu. Nor does Firefox. How can I get this menu to stop appearing. Continuing to left click final works after the menu has appeared several time. Some times it does not do it at all.

    hello bmazak, it sounds like an extension might be interfering here. please try launching firefox in safe mode once and see if the issue is occurring there too.

  • Left click stopped working all of the sudden. Help?

    Earlier today, my MacBook Pro's trackpad button was working just fine. Now it's not. Whenver I press it, nothing happens. I can still move the cursor without a problem. I connected my Mighty Mouse to my MB Pro and everything in my MM works fine, except for the left click. Then I decided to shutdown my MB Pro and reboot it, hoping that it would get rid of the problem. After it turned back on, I realized that the left click is still not working, both on the trackpad and my MM. I even reseted my PRAM and that didn't fix my left click problem at all.
    How do I get the left click working again on BOTH my trackpad and my MM?
    Here are the specs for my MB Pro:
    - MacBook Pro with 15 inch screen (Late 2006)
    - 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor
    - Running on the latest version of Lion (10.7.5)
    - 3 GB of RAM installed

    I have this problem too! I just posted a question - how did you fix it or did it just go away? Mine computer is unuseable. Left click does some things but not all.
    Here's my post
    I can open MAIL but the MAIL menu doesn't appear at the top, and the LEFT click doesn't work properly, but right click does work! Command Q doesn't close the program, it's like it's half open. I can get rid of the page with the LEFT clicker (red button) and I can sort of select stuff in an email but it's grey. The buttons along the top work (Get mail, new message etc), but if I open a new message I can't do anything with it, there's no cursor.
    Other programs the same (like Excel)
    I restarted with the buton on the back, it'll work ok for a few minutes then not so ok. I managed to copy some files onto a hard disc and that all worked fine.
    It seems to be all in the communication between the mouse/keyboard and the computer. Yes I have tried a wired mouse and keyboard, with the bluetooth one off, no help, same result.
    This is not a result of new installation. There's no half-dead mouse hiding somewhere.
    Help! Thanks

  • MBP Retina- trackpad and mouse click unresponsive

    Just got a brand new MBP retina, 15" 2.6Ghz Quad, 16GB Ram, 500 SSD.
    Been working with it for two days absolutely no issues, working fantastically with both trackpad and a wireless magic mouse.
    Used it this morning for several house, took it to work, turned it on and the mouse is working ie the cursor moved over the screen but i am totally unable to click anything! Forced it to restart (holding down power key as that was all that worked), hasn't cured the problem.
    The trackpad physically clicks so doesnt appear to be stuck, i tried plugging in a wired USB mouse, again can control the cursor but unable to click.
    Running 10.8.2, no new software was installed this morning when it worked fine, so cannot figure out what is wrong with it?
    Any suggestions?????

    Finally got it fixed. Make sure you guys call Apple Support. The first tier tech support is not able to help you because they have not been trained for that You will have to speak to a senior advisor. There will be a lot of deleting of caches involved while in safe mode. After did all that my trackpad and keyboard is working again. Hope you'll get yours working too!
