MC340LL/A Airport Extreme using a 128 bit 26 digit password.

I may be asking the wrong question out of ignorance, but I'm confident if I am wrong someone will set me straight. I have an old cone shaped Airport Extreme, that one that looks like a flying saucer, using a WEP 128 bit 26 digit password and at least seven networked devices (two Tivos, an Apple TV, a Ceiva frame, a printer, an iPhone and a PC laptop running Vista). If I were to upgrade to a MC340LL/A Extreme, I would like to not have to reinstall those existing devices, i.e., use a different encryption. Several questions: Will I be able to install the MC340LL/A using my existing security setup and password? Is it possible to install the MC340LL/A with more "modern" security without reinstalling my existing devices? Am I asking the right question(s) or do I not comprehend the issue(s)?

Welcome to the discussions!
+If I were to upgrade to a MC340LL/A Extreme, I would like to not have to reinstall those existing devices, i.e., use a different encryption.+
I'll offer my opinion here and hope that you will get other varying opinions as well.
The simple answer here may that in order to meet your requirements, the Radio Modes on the new Extreme would have to be set down to the same "g" levels that you are using now.
This can be done, but other than possibly picking up a Guest network function, there would be virtually no wireless performance benefit with the change to the new Extreme. You will still be at "g" level wireless.
The exception might be if devices could use what is known as WEP Transitional Security, which would allow some "n" level wireless speeds. But, I'm not sure if your existing password would work in this arrangement, and I'm not sure that all of your devices would function at this setting.
If you have to make a switch, then it would make more sense to move to the much more secure settings offered by WPA2 Personal or WPA/WPA2 Personal security. (As you may be aware WEP is no longer considered secure and can be cracked by anyone with a modest toolkit).
But, I can't tell you whether the Tivos, the Ceiva, or the printer would handle this level of security. It will take some real research to learn whether devices might be compatible; and each device will need to be reinstalled with new passwords. Expect some frustration at best and probably an incompatible device or two.
The Apple devices will all handle the WPA settings and I think the PC running Vista would probably handle it as well. Can't say on the others, but if they are new...a year or two old...that would be an encouraging sign.
Please post back on your progress.

  • Not able to connect to wireless network using WEP 128 bit hex password

I'm using a 128 bit hex WEP password on a Belkin wireless router.
My ascii passphrase is 13 characters.
I tried using the hex password generated by the Belkin router, as well as the hex equivalent of my ascii passphrase. Every time, I am told that either "there was an error connecting to the network" or the "password is incorrect" message.
I'm using channel 7, but have also tried with channel 11.
I tried using a $ sign in front of the WEP hex password. The $ does not work with Open Internet Connect or the Airport menubar.
I can connect if I don't use any encryption on the wireless network, and also through the Ethernet cable.
I have an iBook which connects fine to the wireless network.
So why doesn't the iMac work the same way ?

The security difference between NO encryption and any form of WEP is about 2 minutes or less for somebody looking to get in... besides having WEP enabled makes you look like an easy target since you think it'll stop anything!
Either leave it off, making Hackers think at least 3 minutes about WHY, or use/setup WPA of one form or another!

  • How do you upload firmware to Airport extreme with the following message: This version of AirPort Utility requires this AirPort Extreme use firmware version 7.3.1 or later. Use AirPort Utility 5.6 to update this base station. I'm using airport utility 6.0

The airport extreme at my parent's house has not had its firmware update in some time and it keeps dropping the internet connection and needing to be reset.
I went to update firmware and opened up airport utilities (I'm running airport 6.0 on Mountain Lion, 10.7.4).  Everytime I open the airport utility I get the following message: "
This version of AirPort Utility requires this AirPort Extreme use firmware version 7.3.1 or later. Use AirPort Utility 5.6 to update this base station. AirPort Utility 5.6 is available at AirPort Service and Support.
I've followed the link and tried to update firmwares but none are available and the print says that airport utility will look to see if firmware are available and load them as necessary when prompted by user.
One link said the only way to solve this problem is open up Airport Utility 5.6. I tried to do this, but 5.6 is not supported on Mountain Lion and couldn't be opened up.
I'm getting the exact same message on my other computer, a Mac Air.
So basically, can't download new firmware and am stuck with a ****** airport extreme that needs to keep being reset, a factory reset, in order to use the internet, but then continues to give me the same message.
    Thanks!

How do I access an external hard drive attached to an Airport Extreme using the Finder's "Go to the folder" feature?
I have an external hard drive attached to my Airport Extreme and I can access it just fine through Finder.  I would like to be able to keyboard navigate to it in an efficient manner.  I tried to use the "Go to the folder" feature but was unable to.
I had tried dragging the drive to the Network folder but the shortcut it created does not lead to the drive's contents...it seems to lead right back to the parent directory:
I hope I explained the question well.  Thank you for all of your help and time in tending to my inquiry.

Cant you set up "back to my mac" then go to finder preferences and put a check mark under everything under the shared location. Also set up back to my mac on your airport extreme.

  • HT1145 The airport extreme used with my iMac is not seeing my other devices...anybody, please?

The airport extreme used with my iMac is not seeing my iPhone 5, iPad (third generation) or my windows based PC.  When I open the airport utility it shows only the internet and my iMac.  It does not identify the others.  Any thoughts?  Thanks

    Hi DaileyT,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at this article:
When do Apple wireless devices appear in AirPort Utility?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3624
    Troubleshooting missing devices
If your Apple wireless device doesn't show up in the wireless device list, try the following:
Check to see that the device is turned on.
Check that the device is connected to the network via Ethernet or in wireless range of your computer.
Make sure the device has had adequate time to start up and become discoverable. In the case of Apple wireless devices that are not connected via Ethernet, AirPort Utility scans for new devices once every 15 seconds. From the time a device becomes discoverable (typically around one minute), it could take up to another 15 seconds before the device is displayed in the list.
If you have just configured a new Apple Wireless device, upgraded the firmware, selected "Restore Default Settings..." or have hard reset and configured an Apple wireless device and it does not show up in AirPort Utility after restarting, you may have an incorrect setting. You may want to hard reset the unit and set it up again.
If you are connected to a specific wireless network, all Apple wireless devices which make up that network will appear. However, if you "Restore Default Settings..." from AirPort Utility, or hard reset a device that is out of physical wireless range of the computer, you will need to move the device closer the computer to configure it again.
    Best of luck,
    Mario

  • New iPad asks for WiFi password. There is none. My WiFi uses WEP 128 bit encryption, but there is no "password" to enter.

Brand new to the iPad. It's asking for a password to the WiFi network in my home. There is no "password" as such associated with this WiFi network. It uses WEP 128 bit encryption where each byte is a hexadecimal number and is called a "key" Typing this lengthy thing in gives me no results. The iPad keeps on asking for a password. I have three computers and a DVD hooked to the network which has been working for a decade, so that's not the issue.
Basically I'm stuck not being able to get onto the WiFi system.

  • Unable to connect Brother printer to Airport Extreme using USB

Hi, I recently bought a Brother HL-2270DW printer, which has 802.11 b/g wireless capabilities.  My airport extreme (2008 model) is set to 802.11 n (5 ghz), so I can't set-up the printer wirelessly to the airport extreme without changing to 802.11 b/g.  Instead I'm fine hooking up the printer to the airport extreme using a USB.  When I first turn on the printer, I can print from my Macbook, but after a few minutes, the printer goes offline and has to be turned off/on.  When I try to Open Printer Utility, there is a connection error.  I have the right driver installed, and I can print fine for a few minutes after turning on the printer, and all the time when the printer is connected to the Macbook directly using the USB.  I would like to use the printer by connecting it to the airport extreme using the USB or Ethernet.  Any help would be much appreciated, thanks,

Please explain exactly what you're experiencing that leads you to claim that.
The current firmware of the TiVo Premier is easily confused about whether it's connected to the Internet or not.  In my experience, a TiVo unit will quickly regain its senses and decide that it really is connected.

  • This version of AirPort Utility requires this AirPort Extreme use firmware version 7.3.1 or later. Go to AirPort Service and Support for more information.

I am trying to update my Airport Extreme. I go into the Airport Utility and this is the message attached I get when clicking on it.
"This version of AirPort Utility requires this AirPort Extreme use firmware version 7.3.1 or later. Go to AirPort Service and Support for more information." That;s it.
I guess I can hard reset it, but this seems weird. Any advice would be nice.

  • I bought an Apple Airport Extreme used and it did not come with any software disks. how would make it work without the software disk?

Bought an Apple Airport Extreme used and it did not come with any discs. Do i need any discs? or is there another way to setup this airport without using a software disc?

You can download the setup manual and software that you need.
Look on the bottom of the AirPort Extreme for the Model Number.  It's A.......  something.
Post back with the model number and the exact operating system you are running on your Mac or PC.

  • Problems replacing BT Hub 5 with Airport Extreme using Airport Utility 6.3.2

    Hi
I have spent all afternoon trying to connect to BT infinity using the Airport Extreme router. I have a BT Hub 5 which is OK apart from the fact that it cannot hold more than 3 wireless devices connected at any one time and keeps dropping wi fi connections.
I am using OSX 10.9.4 (Mavericks), Airport Utility v. 6.3.2 and a iMac 2013 base model.
I had some instructions but these refer to the previous version of Airport Utility which is quite different from the current one, so I had to improvise a little
This is what I have done so far:
    1. I have connected the LAN1 port from the Openreach modem to the Gigabit ethernet WAN port of Airport Extreme and I have connected my iMac ethernet to one of the Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports of Airport Extreme
    2. I have named and passworded the network and given the base station a name as required
    3. In the Internet tab I have put in the account name as [email protected] and put in a space in the password box (I also tried writing BT in it with no result). I have set the PPoE connection as  local link only.
The problem I have is that when I click on the internet icon on Airport Utility is shows disconnected and amber light, no matter what changes I make to the Airport Extreme which has a green light. I have noticed that in the new version of Airport Utility it doesn't seem to be possible to set the PPoE connection to be always on.
In desperation I have disconnected the Airport Extreme router and reconnected the Home Hub 5 which works.
What do I need to do?

Your connection is Openreach Modem -> BT Home Hub 5 -> iMAC.
    After a bit of reading - http://www.broadbandchoices.co.uk/guides/hardware/bt-home-hub
Openreach Modem - Optical Network Terminal (ONT).
    HH5 - is a 4-port Ethernet Router/Switch
It looks like BT may be locking the MAC addresses of the modem and hh5 with access control lists, so customers cannot connect a device to replace the HH5.
You have an option. Connect one of the HH5 LAN ports to the WAN port of the Airport.
Set the Airport to Bridge mode, no DHCP address distribution, Create a Wireless Network.
You can just ignore  the HH5 SSID(s) completely and just connect to the ones you create on the Extreme. The iMac can connect to any LAN port on the Extreme or one of the remaining HH5 LAN ports.
The only challenge you may have is, if the number of IP addresses the HH5 can allocate is limited to 4 (by BT's configuration). It can be verified using more than four (4) devices.
If this works, then there are alternatives where a new LAN within a LAN can be created if the IP address limitation becomes an issue.

  • How can I set up airport extreme using my existing 11.g router

My existing router (ZyXEL - supplied by Telefonica with my land line) is an 11.g type and does not allow me to use iPad/iPod in certain areas of my home.  Yesterday I bought an Airport Extreme and was told that I could either connect my existing router's ADSL line directly into the Extreme and connect to my Mac and other peripherals using USB or ethernet cable, or connect from the existing router.
I tried each method using Airport Utility in each case and also trying the different options offered in the set-up.  It doesn't seem to want to work.
    Can anyone help me please.

Further to my earlier (and first) posting, I have been playing with the airport extreme and it now works via my existing router but, it's range is less than 15 metres and that is no better than my existing 11.g router.
Does anyone know how I can increase this range?
p.s. any help in the simplest terms please.

  • How can I connect airport extremes using a wired-switch connection and have roaming capability?

My goal is to have 2 airport extremes and 1 timecapule connected via an ethernet switch so that I can enable roaming. I have no problems connecting them wirelessly where I create the wireless network on a primary airport wireless then add the others "extending" the network. However, if I attempt to do the same thing with a wired connection everything stops working (no connections from any airport). Here's the topology I'm trying to achieve. I believe my problem relates to the switch and the fact that I am serving up DHCP from a separate server. Is there a way I can achieve this (or similar) type of configuration? Thanks in advance.
BTW, I have read the various documents on the roaming network topology  but none seem to be a match to this.

To answer your question, yes, if I _only_ have the main "create wireless network" airport connected/wired to the switch, everything works correctly.
    OK, got that.
Also, if I have each of the 3 airports/timecapsule "create wireless network" using the same ssid name and passwd/protocol, everything works correctly (but of course, no roaming under this scenario
Sorry, you have me confused on this one. When the AirPorts are all configured to "create a wireless network", use the same SSID, security and password, and all AirPorts are in Bridge Mode........that is the exact definition of a "roaming" network.
Not sure what you mean when you say "no roaming" in this configuration.
Also, if I have the main "create wireless network" configured and have the 2 other airports "extend the network" and _not_ have them connected via the ethernet cable, everything works correctly (wireless airport interconnection)
    That is correct.
However, if I plug the 2 other "extend the network" airports into the switch via ethernet, all connectivity shuts down.
This is not a correct setup. The "extend" setting on the AirPort assumes that they will connect using wireless.  If you then try to connect an Ethernet cable to an AirPort that is expecting a wireless connection, that will result in a big feedback loop and effectively crash the network.

  • Connecting iMac to Airport Extreme using ethernet

OK, I feel like and idiot! Please help!
I bought an Airport Extreme so I could connect my iMac directly via ethernet and send a wireless signal out to an iBook and a Windows laptop. I connected the ethernet cable from the iMac to the Airport Extreme, but I cannot connect via ethernet. Also, no green light comes on when I connect the cable (in the LAN <...> port).
This seems like it should be so simple, but I can't find any help on this!

don't know if you are in the US or not but shared (IP/internet connection) doesn't seem to work unless you choose US in the settings as the country where you will use the base station.
i have spent the last 3 days pulling my hair out and trying to get my airport extreme to work with no luck. wizard, manual settings.. nothing worked. i could not get 'shared public IP address' to work.. no internet unless i used bridged mode and then only on the machine with the direct ethernet connection to the base station. yesterday i had given up and i went to the store and purchased a D-Link GigE wireless router (that i'm taking back today, unopened).
I decided to give it one more try to no avail... but just on a fluke i decided to switch the 'country to be used in' to US instead of Canada (where i live) and BOOM... went through the wizard amazingly everything worked fine!!! i couldn't believe my eyes.

  • Configuration of AirPort Extreme Using Third Party LAN Ethernet Adapter?

    Hello;
I am trying to set up my own wireless connection, not without great consternation. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Here is my current situation:
Subscribed to DSL service - installation went well, and it works fine on two other computers (that are not wireless). Installed same in computer that will use airport extreme, and it shows a connection, but won't load the browser pages.
Airport Extreme Base Station is working, software installed, etc., but computer doesn't offer airport as a connection choice in system preferences, internet connect, Airport set-up assistant, etc. (because there's no airport card installed????). Consequently, I can't finish w/airport set-up assistant.
I'm using a third party LAN ethernet wireless adapter since I was told airport cards for my G-4 are no longer made. Adapter and software installed, and shown to be working.
    What am I missing?
