McAfee Firewall and scanning

I have a B520 Idea centre with the following installed:-
BT Net Plus (McAfee) installed through my BT Internet package
Windows 8 upgrade (which updated the Windows 7 which was originally installed)
Last week a message appeared telling me that the McAfee Firewall and Anti Virus were turned off.
When I went to them I could not turn them on. I deleted and then re-installed BT Net plus but it did not fix the problem.
I then thought I would do a system restore to an earlier date but at the end of this I got the following error message:-
System restore failed while deleting the following
Path C:\Windows\System32\DRIVERS\b95df1c913bec87a.sys
an unexpected error ocurred 0x8007007b
I also seem to have lost the option to restore the complete system to the default option.
Does anyone have any ideas on what could fix this and also, is there any way I can now restore the complete system back to its original state with Windows 7
Thanks for any help

hi FJAYM,
Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
If you have a wired Keyboard, Shut the computer down and turn it back on then right away start tapping F2
this should boot you up to a recovery menu where you can select recovery and and will let you Restore it to factory Settings. Windows 7 might be reloaded to the system.
If this does not work, you might need to contact Technical Support in your location and ask how to obtain the REcovery CDs

  • McAfee Firewall in Netprotect Plus

Since the recent program update to Netprotect Plus, I am unable to use FTP. If I disable the McAfee Firewall and enable the Windows Firewall, all is ok.
Ports 20 and 21 are open in McAfee - any ideas would be very helpful please.

My advice and that of others on the forum would be to uninstall BTNetprotect. It can cause problems on some computers and is a resource hog. There are far better free antivirus programs available such as Avast Free, AVG Free and Microsoft Security Essentials.
If you do want to uninstall BTNetprotect use this guide and make sure you use the BTNetprotect/McAfee removal tool after you have restarted your computer.

If you do want to re use BT Netprotect, uninstall it using this guide along with the BTNetprotect/McAfee removal tool after a restart and then reinstall. That may sort your problem.

  • Firewall Rules for Printing and Scanning through Windows Firewall

    Hello,
I am having trouble determining the Ports, Programs, and Services required for printing and scanning with my AIO.
I am using Windows Firewall in Windows 7, and am only allowing certain rules in and out.
I know the firewall is the problem, for when I disable it, everything works fine.
Which rules are required for printing and scanning through the firewall?

    4th Bump,
Is there anyone who can help me with this?
As I said before, other printer manufacturers such as Lexmark and Brother provide this exact information.
Why doesn't hp have a document for this? Does everyone just disable their firewall or open every port?

  • HP Print and Scan Doctor can't connect to HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus.

My HP Officejet Pro 8600 has been working perfectly for the last 1+ years, up until 2 days ago, when it stopped printing jobs submitted from my Windows 7 desktop.  I've tried all manner of repair, thus far unsuccessfully, including
resetting the IP on both the printer and the desktop
    trying wireless connection, no difference
    reinstalling drivers and firmware
    hard-resetting the printer
repeatedly trying to print test pages
repeatedly restarted the Print Spooler, and rebooted the desktop
attempting to troubleshoot using HP Print and Scan Doctor.
    Additional facts:
My wife can use the printer from her work laptop without any problems.
I can ping the printer from the desktop at its static IP, so IP-level connectivity isn't the problem.
The standard print queue view indicates "(Offline)" in the title bar, and attempting to print a test page from the Properties dialog submits the page, then Status flips to "Error - Offline - Printing", despite the fact that the Properties dialog shows no checkmark next to Use Printer Offline menu entry.
The Doctor finds the printer at its IP and acknowledges that it's installed, and when asked to Fix Printing, says that everything checks-out okay with the product.  However, when I ask it to Test Print, it comes back with a pop-up stating it's Unable to Communicate with Printer; it suggests "Click Help for additional assistance information.", but there's no Help button.
If you've experienced this printer in a similar firmly-wedged state, I'd deeply appreciate hearing how you fixed it.
    Thanks,
    -Richard (Personal information)

    Hi @Sunshyn2005
I timed-out waiting for advice, and contacted HP Support, who helped me get the printer back on the air.  While we didn't manage to root-cause it, in the course of trying various things, the tech disabled Norton 360's firewall, which then allowed connecting to the printer, and restoring print service, which remains up after re-enabling the firewall.
The timing of the disconnection doesn't neatly corellate with any Windows updates.  My own theory is that it was caused by a 360 update, but am unable to find a smoking gun, since 360 doesn't provide update history.  The exact root-cause remains a mystery, but at least provides another thing for folks to try should they find themselves in similar straits.
I really appreciated your hint that a Windows update might be the root cause, and your pointing out how to review the history and back-out updates: this morning, I found that Windows had installed a batch of updates overnight, and found that no browsers worked.  Using your advice, I rolled back the update, restoring browsing.
    Thanks,
    -rjs

  • Time capsule firewall, do I need the mcafee firewall on my xp pc? ....

Since the time capsule I'm using as a router servicing my pc running xp and my macbook includes a hardware firewall, do I need to use the software firewall that comes with my mcafee virus package on the pc???
It's my understanding that running a pc without a firewall for even a few minutes is super dangerous.
    Thanks in advance,
    Jason

The reason I ask, is that I'm trying to get my hp 6840 wireless printer to work wirelessly. So far, no go. The pc install software takes me through the wireless install steps then runs into the mcafee firewall.
So I disabled it, since hp says the xp firewall will not interfere. Still won't work. So I disabled the xp firewall. Still no go. The install software on the mac doesn't even ask me about the wireless setup, so there's no love there.
    Any ideas??
    Thanks again,
    Jason

  • Arno-iptables-firewall and CUPS

    Hello everyone.
I'm having a problem with my firewall and CUPS. The thing is, when I try to print when the firewall is active the programs (kword, kcontrol, etc) can't contact cups daemon. But when the firewall is stopped I can print normally. The problem is obviously something with the firewall configuration.
So, the question is, does anyone know how should I configure the firewall (Arno's iptables firewall) in order to solve this problem?. I thought about opening the cups port (631) but this wouldn't be the best solution. I don't want to open a port that shouldn't be open.
The weird thing is that I can access cups thru localhost:631 using konqueror but incredibly slowly. I don't know why the firewall is blocking cups.
I almost forget. Before you ask the printer is connected direcly to my computer. Is not a network printer. I have the needed module loaded (usblp) and the cups server is running.
    Thanks in advance,
    Gonza

    Hello.
I tried the command iptables -F but nothing. The cups server is still unreacheable by kcontrol.
After running arno's firewall, the iptables -vL output is:

It is on an ethernet. I played around enough (turn off firewall, reboot etc) to convince myself that I'm not going to be able to fix it

    Hi Charles,
Thanks so much for taking the time to reply!
Yes I have tried cycling power on both the computer and printer. That used to fix versions before 10.6.5. Unfortunately I don't get any errors. It just doesn't exist as a scanner I can select.
I see other people are having printer problems with the software version just released so it might not be

  • ATV2 won't Home Share with McAfee firewall active

Hi, I have Windows Vista with McAfee SecurityCenter set up. McAfee firewall takes over for Windows and I have the following ports open (as per Apple Support pages)
    TCP 3689
    UDP 5353
ATV2 cannot see pictures, music and videos with these ports open, it only works if I turn off the firewall altogether.
Does anyone know what other ports need to be open for this to work?
    Let me know. Thanks

Can't find the page for AppleTV 2, but:
    AppleTV1 used:

Common ports used by Apple products:

  • NCF vs McAfee Firewall with ePolicy Orchestrator

    Hi:
Our campus is evaluating various desktop firewalls (for Windows 2000/XP). Our main file/print servers are NetWare (6.5) and we run BorderManager on the edge.
Question: We are currently comparing using McAfee Firewall (we own a site McAfee Antivirus license) vs NCF.
The main differences so far are:
    1. McAfee Firewall requires the MS Client to be installed before installation (our college doesn't install the client for security reasons), although the client can be remove afterwards.
    2. ePolicy Orchestrator - Is a server/console app that allows you to rollout the product, push policies changes, get alerts, etc.
Does NCF in any manner integrate with eDirectory or Zenworks to allow centralized reporting or policy change?
    Thanks

If you ran Novell, would you try to compete with Symantec and Zone Labs in this space or would you put your people on a new, open space with significant revenue potential that also supports a more secure, less expensive platform for customers?
Hopefully the latter; I own NOVL stock. ;)

Wow, I thought this was a joke, until I got to the end and saw no punch line.
This greatly saddens me. I have ZERO incentive at this point to move to Linux on the desktop, servers are another story but that's not we are talking about here. Even Brainshare didn't convince me to dump my Windows clients.

Actually, we explained at BrainShare this year that Novell has directed its distributed security efforts to the Linux desktop and will be relying on partners to deliver solutions for Winblows. We will continue NCF as an unmanaged solution, probably still merging it into a single more seamless client with IPSec. And we will probably still do some things to make it work more seamlessly with ZfD. But we won't try to compete with McAfee and the rest on Windoze. Linux is a completely different story tho; we are well into a high priority project to deliver a complete, identity-based, policy-based client security suite for Linux desktops. You should see the first piece IPSec client in a Novell Linux Desktop release this fall. Next year it will expand to include patch management, multifactor authentication, singe sign-on, firewall, anti-virus, file system encryption, intrusion prevention, etc. Taking a good hard look at wireless authentication and encryption too.
Then again, that may change if the ZfD group (which will continue to rely on Windoze as their primary revenue source for a few years) decides to exploit the emerging trend to combine desktop management and end point security. Those discussions are beginning. But Nsure will not provide that solution on Win.

  • My McAfee firewall has just started stopping Firefox?

I have been using Firefox for years. There was an update that came through, from Firefox, a few days ago that I blocked. The next time I turned on my laptop Firefox would not work. I tried a bit later with still no luck. I then turned off my McAfee firewall protection and now it works.

  • HP Solution Center stopped working and HP Print and Scan Doctor cannot find my OJ4680

HP Solution Center came installed on my HP G60 notebook with Windows 7 premium 64 bit.  It suddenly stopped working--it says it cannot run because the device installation is not complete.  If I open HP Sup0ort Assistant it says the OJ4680 is ready and it is designated as the default printer in Printers and Devices but when I try to run HP Print and Scan Doctor it cannot find it--it can only find OJ4500 which I use when I'm in my second home.  Please help me fix this as at this point I can't print or scan.

Thanks for the help and quick response.  I haven't tried your solution yet because before I received your instructions I updated the drivers again and it appears to be working though I've had a message since then that I couldn't scan because my device was offline which was not true as I had just printed a document.  I used HP Print and Scan doctor and followed the steps which included turning the device off and unplugging it for 60 seconds.  I can now copy, print and scan but I still have the yellow triangles with exclamation points on both my PC and all in one.  I'm not sure I want to do more at this point since everything is working well at the moment. BTW my laptop is set for automatic updates by HP and Microsoft, why didn't they keep this problem from occurring?

  • A "HP Twain Scan" function in the "Print and Scan Doctor" app - Solution?

Frustration!! Why can't I get the scanning portion of subject printer to work on my laptop Windows 7 (64-bit)!?? I've tried the Print and Scan Doctor several times, and the same dysfunction says "HP Twain Scan" whatever that means or is? I've pulled out the cords, all of 'em, and it still not helping.  Did I purchase a printer that is not compatible with my laptop? As far as the scanning portion is concerned, or what?  I can print OK, both from website/emails and my own documents.  I do a lot of scanning (photos mostly), and so this will be a sad problem.Hoping someone out there in techland can give me a solution. Thanks!

  • Error message about firewall and internet sharing

hello all i have a question regarding the use of firewall and internet sharing.
I have a PMG5 connected to internet through Airport. I've linked an Xbox 360 via the built-in ethernet port in order to access Xbox Live. I had to open specific UDP ports on the OS X firewall but it now works fine. However, in the Sharing Preference Pane, Internet Tab, i still get an error message saying that my Internet Sharing is disturbed by the settings of the firewall and sharing services, it says that i did not activate "personal web sharing" in the first two tabs...but i DID ! And there's no way to get rid of this error message.
I know I know some may consider it's not a real problem because it's just an error message while the connection actually works fine but well, I tend to hate error messages when they're not supposed to show up. So if anyone know the answer, thanks in advance...
    Good day to everyone
    Vince, Paris...

sorry about the delay in replying, was kinda busy
well trashing the pref files was useless and i tried with another user, same thing. As for the second opinion, the problem was not about which port was used cause as i said the connection sharing works fine and anyway it was the correct port that was checked, it's just that i get an error message while there is no apparent error and everything works fine, i'm told that personal web sharing is not enabled but it is...
Anyway as i said, it's probably not a real matter, as long as it works...which brings me to another thing. I've created a special protocol in the firewall to enable a proper dialog with the xbox. it's basically the same thing you do for ichat AV when you have video connection problems, you track down the concerned UDP port using terminal, you allow traffic and all... The protocol for the xbox worked great for some days, but now it seems it's not enough, the game set keeps trying on another port and i constantly have to update the protocol or deactivate the firewall...and enabling back all UDP traffic is not enough to solve it.
In a way i think everything is linked, the initial error message when everything was fine and the current trouble. Any idea?
    thanks
    Vince
