McAffee Virex and 10.4.6

Since updating to 10.4.6 i've noticed Virex doesn't seem to want to play.
When I attempt to load it, i get the message
"The Health Check component is not responding. Please restart or re-install."
I've reinstalled Virex and I still get this error.
Any ideas anyone?

I wouldn't worry. This software does nothing for you anyway. Keep an eye out for updates if you are determined to continue using it.

I need to go back to 3.6 from 4.0 Because:
    1. Norton, some Mcaffee, and other needed programs aren't supported yet.
    2. Can't downsize 4.0 to fit properly on a half screen, when using a text editor on one half and 4.0 display on the other half. I have to go to a full screen to do somethings, and then back to half screen after. Things aren't easy anymore.
    3. When moving references and extras from Wikipedia to my PC, the reference numbers and other generated items are missing on my PC. Never with 3.6
Things are not easy going with 4.0!!!!!!!

  • Need new virus and security software, Virex and eupdate no working

I would like suggestions on getting some software for virus and spam filters .
The Virex 7.5 keeps saying "Health check component is not responding"
and the Eupdate says "unable to connect to server" restart or reinstall".
    Done.
I have not received any updates for either program.
I know Norton has mac programs out here, I basically only do the following:
Itunes, Iphoto, Mail thru Charter cable and a Mac account (Safari and Explorer) , netscape .
I have been getting a lot of spam lately, In the past I got maybe one or two a month now I get 4or 6 a day.
I have also been getting phony Paypal notices.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I feel very open to a problem.
    Thanks, greg

For the email account/address you are receiving a lot of spam with lately, do you use this email address when making online purchases, for any website access or provided with/for any other "public" purposes?
Do you automatically render all HTML received? If so and a spammer uses embedded images or objects that must be rendered/downloaded from a remote server, this can indicate to the spammer that your email address is valid causing even more spam to be received.
Antivirus software will not help with preventing the receipt of spam and phisher emails such as the phony PayPal and other type email trying to gain access to your bank or credit card information.
Check Why was I "spammed" at my .Mac Mail address?. The same applies to any email account.
Virex 7.5 is not compatible with Tiger. Regarding Antivirus software for OS X, check Macs, viruses, and anti-virus software.

  • Virex and eUpdates

So, it's been a while since I've used my old G3. I'm now reinstalling the OS 10.2.8 and the software updater installing the combo. Now..question is I haven't seen the eUpdate or Virex run upon startup. I have internet connection and can access no problem. There aren't any errors coming up, just that I can't find anything for Virex. Is there a new link/sw I need to find for anti-virus?
    Mac currently:
    OS 10.2.8 (with updates)
    256MB - 700MHz - G3
Not sure if I should just go for the latest OS...
    PC   Windows XP

I don't know much about computers, so please bear with me. I know that this is about Virex, but this is where it all began.
Okay, first, my computer was running very slow and Firefox kept quitting on me, so I went to Disk Utility for the repair.
Well, for some reason, it would never complete the verification or repair. If I stopped it to start again, it would freeze up. I even let the repair go all night and it still did not complete! (it would always be just a sliver left to finish)
Then, I went under Disk Utility help and it told me to run my Install and Restore CD.
Well, I accidentally did a reinstall instead of restore and now all of my favorites and books are gone as well as my Virex! But, when 'Softwear Updates' popped up with a list of updates, one of them was the latest Security Update.
My Virex shield is no longer in my dock, and everytime I try to relaunch it from my Mac HD folder, it pops up and then disappears from the dock.
Now I'm afraid to do another restore for fear of what might happen next. I do remember doing a restore a couple of years ago and my Virex was never affected.
Do I have any type of security running or am I just blowing in the wind?
    Thank you,
    Krystal

  • .mac accounts and Virex?

There are tips given directly above this topics area. One of them said: Tip : .Mac members should keep in mind that Virex is part of their subscriptions... Installing Virex and updating it very easy and all .Mac members should use it - unless, of course, they choose to use another anti-virus software. I am a.mac member, but cannot find anything at all about this virex (anti virus) that sounds like is part of my subscription. Anyone know more? I tried looking at mobileme topics and looked searched everywhere else, but since the tip came from this section, thought I'd try here.

If you really think you need anti-virus software to keep from passing Windoze viruses on to your friends (there are no OSX viruses), then use the free ClamXav.

  • Firewall and such

I was just wondering how to set up the firewall on my imac as i have no clue what to do. i was also wonderingin if there is a built in anti virus feature in OSX. thanks

    Hi Daniel,
THe default firewall setttings in OSX are pretty good and there is a fair amount of information about using them in the in the Knowledgbase. Click on "advanced search" in the discussion menu bar above, enter "kmosx4 firewall" (without the quotes) in the first search field, and hit return.
THere are no "wild" viruses which affect OSX. You can install a vrus checker like http://www.clamxav.com/ if you wish (and there are commercial offerings from Nortons, Virex and Drive Genius, though in at least the first two cases they have caused more problems (lots) than they have solved (none) for Mac owners running OSX) . The only real reason to do so at present is if your computer is used as a server by unprotected windows machines and they are likely to download files from your email attachments folders.
The last actual Mac virus that I saw was in the mid 1990's. I've seen 4 (all contracted from floppies when students tried pirating software in an educational environment), since I began using macs in 1986. I generally receive more PC viruses than this EACH DAY.
Unless you really have to use a virus checker, because of employer IT service requirements or because your Mac is being used in the fashion descrbed above, you are really likely to be far, far safer without one, given the problems which they have, on occasion, caused in the past, at least until a virus which can genuinely affect OSX appears. We've been waiting for several years now!

  • Applications Hanging (inc Finder), and repeatedly force quitting! (kernel?)

    Hey all,
So I've been having a heck of a time the past few days.
Recently (my Powerbook is about 9 months old), applications started hanging, and I had to forcequit them. Then, I had to do a hard reboot, and when the computer restarted, I got a grey screen with a blinking queston mark / finder face. After restarting twice (or later, if I just left it for a few minutes), the computer would restart normally and go into the regular OS X page.
I've run all the regular maintanence procedures, and I've repaired all disk permissions. I've run McAfee Virex (and it doesn't find any viruses, but stops when its access is denied, I'll run this again when I got to sleep). I've also run TechTool Deluxe, which found no errors for any hardware components (even when I did a "surface scan")
When I opened console and opened the console log, I wasn't able to get much useful information. But the Systems logs was more helpful, and I saw that when my Safari crashed, it occurred at the same time as a kernel [0] error. Then console crashed, and just before it did, it recorded the same error!
However, after those first few crashes, when a few more occurred in different applications, the same message did not appear again. Then when sarari crashed again, I got an "extended attributes" message.
    Help!
Here is a copy of the systems log just at the 2:07 "kernel" crash with Safari, and the 2:12 console crash. Then again with the "extended attributes" Safari crash.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help at all with this!

    Hey Dr. Smoke,
I have updated Adobe, thanks for that, no problems with that anymore.
So, when I ran the command line "df -a", it gave me "/" under "mounted on," which I suppose is because it's my start up drive.
When I went through the booting from a Mac OS X 10.4.7 disk, and ran disk utilities, it found a "minor error" about a "bitmap" and then found no errors every time after that. When I booted in Safe Mode, and ran disk utility, it found no errors. When I booted in normal OS X, and ran disk utility, it found no errors. But, after a little while, the applications, especially safari and mail started hanging again!
So, then I opened Tech Tool Deluxe 3.0, and ran its complete check on the processor, RAM, Video Ram, USB, Diagnostic, Rezero Unit, and Format Check. No problems, and everything completed successfully. Then I ran the "surface Scan" and it similarly found no problems. I haven't run Random Read, Random Write, Linear Read, Linear Write, Seek, Read Buffer, or Write Buffer, should I?
The hanging continued, so I completed your Steps 1 - 2 in "resolving Disk, Permsision, and Cache Corruption," everything turned out fine. The S.M.A.R.T. status is still "verified" too. I am about to run Yasu to reset my cache, and I will report back with the results.
    When I googgled by specific error "kernel[0]: disk0s3: I/O Error," I found a few semi-helpful results:
    http://www.macfixitforums.com/showflat.php?Board=tiger&Number=742835
    http://forums.macnn.com/archive/index.php/t-269118.html
Both experienced similar problems, specifically with all the utilities not reporting any problems, yet the hanging continuing. HOWEVER, they both report hearing the clicking sound of death of their hard drive desperately trying to read blocks on the hard drive, whereas I am NOT hearing that noise.
The first thread's user was told that the hard drive was about to die, and to do a 'surface scan" which would show the error. I ran that and couldn't discover any erros in any of the blocks.
The second thread's user had a problem with a Virtual PC disk, and eventually had to format the HD and do a clean reinstall of OS X. But still thought that the HD was dying.
One poster (9-11-2005 1:47 PM) in the second thread mentioned that they had a similar problem that was resolved using Disk Warrior, which found errors in blocks that other programs, including TechTool, couldn't find. Should I buy Disk Warrior to fix this, even though TechTool Deluxe 3.0 isn't showing problems?
Okay, that's a lot of information. Hopefully it's helpful in figuring out what the heck is wrong with my powerbook.
    Thanks!
PS your book sounds amazing! Thanks for your help!

  • MacAfee and MacBook

I recently just got my first Mac and someone suggested that I install MacAfee virus protection... is this something that would be recommended?
    Any info would be appreciated!
    Thanks!

One question I have, about the distinction between Norton Anti-Virus, McAfee VirusScan (Virex), and ClamXav, (any other options for the Mac?): it seems that all have the capabilty to scan files for known viruses, and offer regular updates to the virus definitions, either through subscription or free updates. (Is the open-source team as diligent about making frequent updates as the commercial providers?)
Can all of these also monitor for suspected typical mailicious code activity due to unknown viruses that have not yet been included in your installed virus definitions?
Say you unwittingly activate a Trojan horse that starts modifying system files, can all of these tools detect and warn you, and give you a chance to stop the activity?

  • Kernel panics despite all fixes

CS2, Office X, Firefox, Apple Mail, Fetch, Dreamweaver, Lotus Notes (I teach an online class and that's the interface, believe it or not), Virex and Disk Warrior
A while ago I started to have two problems, which may or may not be related:
    1. Sometimes the computer would not wake from sleep requiring pushing the restart button.
    2. Kernel panics at least a few times a month, always soon after waking from sleep
I went through every step outlined in the X Lab: Resolving Kernel Panics page. Finally, in desperation I erased the start-up disk and re-installed the system, going through all of the system updates (note - after reading this forum I have not installed the most recent security update). Well, I'm still having both issues, plus a few more concerning iPhoto permissions (that will be a separate post). I keep no peripherals attached except when I need them (Epson scanner and Neptune FW drive) and the kernel panics occur whether or not the peripherals are attached to the computer. I've even swapped out my Macally keyboard and Kensington mouse for an Apple keyboard and logitech mouse, but still had kp's.

I'm at my wit's end. Any suggestions? I have 10.4 available but haven't been really interested in updating because my computer is old and I'm concerned that it isn't really fast enough for 10.4. But if it would stop the kernel panics and wake from sleep problems, I'd try it.
    Thanks,

  • ICal unexpectedly disappeared

My iCal unexpectedly disappeared and when I tried re-installing iCal, I got an error message of "iCal cannot be installed on this computer."
I have not problems before too with various programs such as Virex and even installing Tiger.
I was told by apple service centre in Hong Kong that the Hard Disk meant be corrupted and I think they erased my hard disk before installing tiger again.
and now the same problem resurfaced but with iCal.
    Please Advice!

Lorenzo, your not alone. I too have the same problem and have been reading these threads in an attempt to find a solution. So far no luck. I too have had problems since installing Tiger but iCal was stable at first. I have recently installed Virex 7.7 due to the problems the earlier version had with Tiger. As a last resort, I will uninstall Virex again. The only other strange behaviour that I have not been able to remedy since Tiger is the Calculator can only be quit from the dock. I don't think the two are associated but it would be interesting to know if your having this problem too.
    Jim.

  • Itunes on windows vista not downloading new purchases

I recently received an Inspiron E1505, and am running windows Vista Basic. I have Itunes 7, and it works fine except for when I purchase music. Then it receives an error of connection timing out or unable to download the songs. Does anyone know how to fix this?
I've tried bypassing my router, disabling all firewalls (McAffee, Windows, and Windows Defender), contacted Dell and my ISP, and now I'm at a loss. Please help?

I am having exactly same problems as have been mentioned with my new machine and I too am running Vista. Has anybody any suggestions or been able to find a solution? I have been able to download some purchases, which initially came up with this same message and then later successfully downloaded. I have another purchase just sitting waiting to be downloaded but now keep getting this 3259 connection timing out error.

  • Strange Error Message after prolonged inactivity

I have a PowerMac G5 (1.8 Ghz, 900mhz bus speed, with 1.5 GB of RAM installed.
If this machine is left running overnight, wheth it is asleep or not, by the next morning, the following error appears on the screen:
    obj~1/RELEASE_PPC
    MEMORY ACCESS EXCEPTION (1,0,0)
    Ethernet MAC Address: xxxxx
    IP address: xx.xx.xx.xx
    Waiting for remote debugger connection.
It appears to be a kernel panic of some kind; my theory based on the error message is that there is a memory leak on one of the memory modules. I have taken the following troubelshooting steps:
-Run ASD for PowerMac G5 and it passed all tests.
-Run Techtool Pro hardware tests, and it passed all tests.
-Searched for applicable firmware updates, and when run, I get a message that the firmware is up to date.
    -Reset SMU.
I have a second G5 that is starting to do the same thing. However, the one in question is doing this frequently, as in every night.

Actually, I believe I've got it troubelshot down to a software and not a hardware issue. I checked the kernell panic log and saw that Virex was consistently causing kernel panics before 8:00 AM. I removed Virex, and everything is fine.
I sort of inherited support on these G5's, so I am uncertain about the memory in them. I have not yet had reason to crack the cases on them. I want to eliminate software first.

  • Serious Difficulty With Mail

    Hi All,
I'm having seroius difficulty with Mail. Every time I start it up, it crashes within 30 seconds and I have to Force Quit every time. It has all the looks of a virus!!!!
How do I erradicate this or how do I go about reinstalling Mail. I've repaired permissions and disk (there were no errors on the disk). I've also downloaded McAfee Virex and it found nothing - I'm running out of ideas.
    Can anyone help???
    Thanks,
    Seán.
    PowerBook G4 1.5GHz, 512MB, 80GB, AE   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Don't waste your time being concerned about a virus causing this. If/when the first OS X virus is identified, it will be all over the newswires and the internet (including these Discussions) in a matter of hours if not minutes since it will be big news.
Which Virex version did you download and install? Did you confirm the version you installed is compatible with Tiger?
Re-installing the Mail.app rarely resolves such a problem.
Quit Mail first and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail. Move the Mail folder to the Desktop.
Launch Mail and a new Mail folder and account named folders within will be created automatically. All account mailboxes will be empty and no user created "On My Mac" mailboxes will be available but this will determine if there is a problem in the old Mail folder moved to the Desktop.
If this resolves the crashing problem, you can replace the various files that stores Rules, Signatures and Junk Mail "learned" settings, etc. and then import various mailboxes from the old Mail folder a few at a time to determine which files and/or mailboxes are causing the problem.
If this doesn't resolve the crashing problem, with the Mail.app quit and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail. Delete the newly created Mail folder. Move the old Mail folder back to the same location at Home > Library.
Copy the Mail folder and place the copy on the Desktop for backup purposes.
Using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.mail.plist. Move the com.apple.mail.plist file to the Desktop.
Note: Moving the com.apple.mail.plist file out of the Preferences folder will require re-entering all email account information when re-launching Mail.
Launch Mail and decline any prompt to import mailboxes. After re-entering all email account information the same as before, the Mail.app should rediscover the existing account named folder(s) and mailboxes at Home > Library > Mail.
After confirming all mailboxes were successfully rediscovered, you can delete the copy of the Mail folder and old com.apple.mail.plist file from the Desktop.

  • Modem headaches

I have a USR modem connected to a Solaris 5.9 system doing TAP paging via Java and the comm api, that is working fine. When I connect the same model of USR modem to another Solaris 5.9 system, I am getting a different behavior and I'm not sure why. Here are the specifics. First the output from the working system, then the output from the system where it doesn't work, then the code stub where I am looping waiting for a response back. The difference between the two systems that I can see is, ' bytesRead = input.read(readBuffer);' On the working system I am getting a full string back with a carriage return and on the non-working system I am getting back a single character at a time with a carriage return. In looking at the output again, I also see that the working system echo's back the atdt command and the non-working one doesn't. The dip switch settings are the same on the two modems and I am initializing them the same with the comm api, so I don't understand that as well.
    Any ideas/thoughts would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.
    Jeff

After further research on this topic, I discovered that the culprit appears to be Virex anti-virus software, as per the note on found on this link: http://www.carnationsoftware.com/carnation/Modem_Problems.html
I uninstalled Virex and problem solved!!
Ideally of course, we remember to disable any anti-virus software BEFORE installing other software......

  • Removing norton from an imac dv running 10.3.9

I wanted to load a new viral program from my employers take home program called virex. The norton subscription expired and I never liked its constant updating. I tried deleting the folders that stood out and rebooting. I then tried to install virex and it tells me a viral program is running. Stop it and remove and reinstall. How can I track down what is still running and delete it? I tried doing a process check in a terminal window and nothing shows. So if anyone knows how to remove this so I can install the new program I'd appreciate it.

    Hi Ray;
Tracking down all of the places that Symantec hid things for NAV is a royal pain. I would suggest instead that you go to the Symantec site and download one of few piece of good code they have created, the Uninstaller for Nav. Once you run that, you should be free of NAV.
Before you install Virex, you might want to do a search on this forum for it. Things for Virex don't sound very good. Virex was dropped from .Mac because of the problems it was causing.
