MCE DVD±R DL upgrade for Powerbook

I have seen a DVD±R DL drive upgrade for the powerbook on MCE's website for $150. I would like to know if anyone has this upgrade, and if it is any good, as I am looking into getting it!

How much does DVD-RAM cost compared to regular blank DVD's? Either one is a good buy. MCE's burns dual layers at 4x while OCW's burns dvd-rams. I guess it depends on which you'll be burning more.
I found this at Wikipedia, though I am not sure how up to date it is:
"The optical drives in Apple Macintosh computers do not support DVD-RAM operation, but a third party DVD-RAM-compatible drive can be connected and used with software such as DVD Studio Pro."

  • Have iWork 09 DVD. Cannot upgrade for free to new versions

App Store does not acknowledge that I have the DVD version of iWork. It doesn't even have any serial numbers printed on the DVD or in the sleeve. Is there a way to "tell" the app store app that I have this Apple software? I thought that iWork '09 customers get iWork '13 for free? Apple support wants $19 to answer this question :-( The system recognized other software that were also originally in DVD form (Aperture, iLife '11). Whats with iWork?

I'm using Mac OSX Mavericks in German language - in one of the forums there was a quick solution to my problem: if you change language setting in Mac OSX to English (primary language), then reboot, and then running software update will show you all the updates to your iLife and iWork apps - for free. Nice workaround for those who can't wait.

  • I have a DVD-Rom and DVD-Video card for Powerbook and need advice

I acquired 2 accessory components for a G3 series powerbook. I have a dual G4 so have no use for them. There is a M4743 DVD-Rom for Powerbook and a DVD-Video PC card for G3 series Powerbook family M5163. There is also a software CD. I would like to sell them but I really don’t how to explain what this stuff does. I tried Ebay and did not find any matches. Does this make a DVD upgrade for a particular Powerbook? Is something else required? Is Ebay the best place to sell? Any idea what this stuff is worth? Any advice would be greatly appreciated
    Bob

    Robert,
You apparently have the DVD Video Player Kit for the Powerbook G3 Series "Wallstreet" M4753.
    This is the DVD-ROM module:
    http://www.powerbookmedic.com/xcart1/customer/product.php?productid=16219&cat=26 6&page=1
This is the DVD Decoder PC card:
    http://www.ifixit.com/cart/customer/product.php?productid=296&cat=&page=1
The above DVD PC card is not Apple's but there were two third-party vendors who also offered a DVD kit...VST and MCE. They all served the same purpose and will all be priced similarly.
Both PC card and optical drive are required to play DVD movies on the Wallstreet, plus Apple DVD Player is only supported when booted to 9.x, not 10.x.
I really cannot give you a fair price to ask; the above hardware prices are probably high but you will get an idea.

  • PowerBook G4 1.33 wont boot from DVD drive after upgrade

Can anyone offer some assitance. I just upgraded my PowerBook G4 1.33 from a Combo Drive to a Panasonic SuperDrive. Also upgraded to a 250GB harddrive. Got a tree error on HD and when I went to boot up Diskwarrior I could not boot from the DVD drive. It does not come up as a bootable drive. Tried Holding down "C" key "Option Key" nothing works. Can anyone tell me what's wrong? All other drive functions work perfectly.

Hi chubbs899, and a warm welcome to the forums & Macdom!
i have read says you can go in through disk utility and partition the drive but i still have yet to see anything that says something about disk utility.
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*

it gives you the option of doing "journal" format or "case sensitive, journal" format.
Don't use Case Sensitive, confuses many Apps.
i suspected jumper settings but when i read through the manual on the WD website it didnt seem to say anything about doing something specifically for apple. it had a jumper for slower transfer rate 1.5Gb/s
Yes, it needs that jumper on pins 5&6.

  • Help finding dvd rom for powerbook G3 M3553

I have an apple laptop powerbook G3 M3553 with mac os 8 and am wondering if I can get an internal dvd rom??? Any help is much appreciated!!

    Jamie,
There are no "dummies", just users who are seeking answers.
I'm glad you explained why you wanted a DVD drive, and if I understand correctly, it is so your husband can watch DVD movies on the "Kanga" powerbook. Unfortunately, this is not going to work. A DVD drive can be connected either via the SCSI (square 30-pin port) on the back panel or possibly via a FireWire PC card inserted in the PCMCIA card slot on the left side of the powerbook. However, you would need third-party video player software like VideoLan's VLV Media Player, but there is no version for OS 9.x.
    http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
In addition, even if there were DVD player software for 9.x, your playback would be very disappointing. Even using VLC on a Powerbook G3 Bronze Keyboard running OSX with a 400MHz CPU, playback is choppy. Your G3 Kanga only has a 250MHz CPU.
When DVDs first became popular, video CDs (VCD) were also released to meet the needs of those without DVD drives, and were widely available in the Far East. However, I have not checked on the availability of these versions locally and I would assume few stores carry a wide selection, if any. This would be the only practical way of playing movies on the Kanga.
    http://www.mireth.com/doc/macvcd_readme.html
My suggestion would be to buy a portable DVD player with prices anywhere from $125 and up.

  • Upgrade for Sun Ultra 60 without DVD?

    20 January 2012
    Greetings,
I have a Sun Ultra 60 (SUNW, UltraSPARC-II, 64-bit) currently running Solaris 9. The Ultra 60 was listed on the HCL for the Solaris 11 Express release last year, so I assumed it would run Solaris 11. But having downloaded Solaris 11 11/11 and burned it to CD, I get the error message:
Error: 'SUNW, UltraSPARC-II' is not supported by this release of Solaris. Program terminated.
Problem #1: The Solaris 11 Express release, which might work, is no longer available. Problem #2: The Solaris 10 8/11 release, which should certainly work, is available only on DVD or as an .iso image to be burned to DVD. (Too large for a CD, I presume.) The machine has neither a DVD reader nor burner, and obtaining one looks like a budget buster, even assuming I could find a driver for it for Solaris 9. So: Is there a way to get a version of Solaris 11 which will run on the Ultra 60, or a version of Solaris 10 on multiple CD's, or some other work-around? It is an odd situation that Oracle has a product which I wish to buy, but cannot find a form in which to sell it to me.
Thanks in advance for your assistance.
    Sincerely,
    Ian H. Redmount

    23 January 2012
    Dear Mr. Magnus,
Thank you for your reply. No, Live Upgrade does not address my problem:
    1) I do not have the Live Update software on this machine. Where would I get it?
    2) Live Upgrade still requires a source from which to update the mirror image of the boot environment it produces. The Oracle White Paper on the subject mentions the Solaris 10 DVD. If I could read the DVD, or if I had another source of Solaris 10, I would have no problem to begin with.
We have to break out of the circular reasoning here. So the question remains: Where or how do I get a non-DVD form of the Solaris 10 operating system?
    Thanks again for your assistance.
    Sincerely,
    Ian H. Redmount

  • DVD Drive upgrade for for clamshell

if i buy a standard DVD or even a DVD-R/RW drive for a clamshell will it work or do i have to hunt for a Apple superdrive as ican grabe a cheap drive of ebay if any will work.

Not really ...once the drive is placed into the 'harness' for the clamshell then you simply put it back together the same way you got it apart. The harness has various screw holes that line up with all the standard optical drives so that's no big deal ..sometimes though, you have to be careful as not to damage the harness when you take the old optical drive out. Like I said it's not a problem ...unless you get anxious and start tearing into things then you could run into 'fitting' issues.

The item at the very top of this picture (from what is exposed under the keyboard) is the optical drive ...this 'holey' cheese grater type thing is part of the harness that hold the drive in place - it's this part that you'll have to be careful with...

  • Scared to upgrade to Tiger; will I have to purchase upgrades for my apps?

    Hi,
I have been looking for info on application support for Tiger, and I am either looking in the wrong place or it does not exist, because have searched and have not found a definitive answer.
I work in the video industry and I have spent a lot of money on programs that I use all the time in my G4 PowerMac running 10.3.9.
    I have:
    Final Cut Pro HD;
    DVD STudio Pro 3;
    Adobe Photoshop CS
    Macromedia Dreamweaver MX
Also, I have an old scanner that I love that DOES have support for OSX, but not Tiger specifically.
I am wondering if any or all of these apps work as is in Tiger or am I going to have to purchase upgrades for these programs to work with Tiger. Is there any where I can look up specific support issues for my apps before I upgrade and find out, "oops, that don't work here."
I was content to stay in Panther since why "fix what ain't broken", as they say, but I do feel I am getting left behind. All MAC mags I use to love to read for tips and tricks now only pertain to Tiger and widgets and spotlight look super cool.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    G4 PowerMac MDD 1.25 Ghz DP; 17 PowerBook G4 1.33 Ghz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Your apps are all going to work just fine. The scanner? Check for an update to the software. Probably be just fine.
Here's the thing, though. it sounds like you do not have a backup on an external. If not, all bets are off. You are jumping with no net. Good luck.

  • HT5167 how do I upgrade my Powerbook OS 10.4.11 to OS 10.5.8

Hi  I'm new to apple laptops and I need help upgrading my powerbook with OS 10.4.11 to a higher OS but I don't have the restoring Dics any can someone help please

Your computer must meet the requirements:
    Leopard System requirements
You must have a Macintosh computer with:
an Intel processor or a PowerPC G4 (867 MHz or faster) or G5 processor
    a DVD drive >built-in FireWire
at least 512 MB of RAM (additional RAM is recommended for development purposes)
a built-in display or a display connected to an Apple-supplied video card supported by your computer
at least 9 GB of disk space available, or 12 GB of disk space if you install the developer tools
Then you will need to search Google, eBay, and Amazon.com for a retail copy of Leopard.

  • Can't upgrade my PowerBook G4, now at 10.4.11 to 10.5. It meets all system requirements!

I need to upgrade my PowerBook G4 to 10.5 so that I can use the current version of iTunes. When I talked to the Apple tech guy he said my PowerBook specs indicate that it can run OS 10.5. Specs are: PowerBook G4 15" 1.5Ghz 1 GB memory plenty of disc space, Firewire and attached screen. All listed on the install disc for 10.5. When I start up the install, I select English and two seconds later a window pops up saying it can't install on this computer. Doesn't state why or what is missing! ARGGHH!! I double checked everything, ran disk utility, opened the battery compartment to verify (1.5GHz/1GB/80G/SuperDrive/BT/APX/Backlit KB). So all hardware requirements are met.
The disc says Mac OS version 10.5, AHT version 3A137, Disc version 1.0, 2Z691-6150-A.
    Can anyone help?

  • Upgrading 12" Powerbook G4 hard drive & OS X 10.5--please help?

So, I’ve decided I want to venture into upgrading my Powerbook G4 hard drive, RAM, and OS. Currently I have:
    512 RAM
    1.5 Ghz
    80 GB 5400 HD
    Mac OS X 10.4.11
What I would like to upgrade to:
    1.25GB RAM (max)
    1.5 Ghz
    160-320GB 5400 (7200 if possible) HD
    Mac OS X 10.5
Now here comes my questions. The RAM upgrade is straightforward. The HD upgrade seems simple enough when using tutorials on ifixit.com. I am wondering though, does the HD need to be ATA-100 or could it be ATA-133? Are DMA, Ultra DMA, UDMA, DMA-100, ATA, ATA-100, IDE, and EIDE all the same thing and all compatible with the 12" powerbook G4?
Assuming the hard drive speed is 5400 and I have RAM maxed out, are there performance differences between say a 160GB 5400 HD and a 320GB 5400 HD? Would it be better just to get the biggest HD that is compatible with my PB?
Also, FRYS.COM has "retail hard drive kits" and "bare HDs" What’s the difference between the two?
    Finally:
Once I figure out which HD I want, I will have new: Hard Drive, RAM, and a Mac OS X 10.5 DVD Purchased from an Apple Store. I will install the RAM. Now I will be left with a HD and OSX 10.5 DVD...how do I get the new OS on the new HD?

The hard drive needs to be a parallel ATA 2.5" notebook hard drive. ATA-100 or ATA-133 or the others you listed don't matter. You cannot use a serial ATA or SATA hard drive, that's important. Here are two online stores and their parallel ATA drives available: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010150380%201035907 889&name=ATA-6 and http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/ (Click on 2.5" ATA laptop drives).
You'll note there aren't any 7200rpm drives listed, as they aren't made anymore for the parallel ATA interface. Choose whatever size works for you, and if increasing the size, make sure you have capacity to backup the new, larger hard drive, as you fill it up.
You only need the bare hard drive. There can be a difference between a retail boxed version versus OEM, as the warranty can be different, but that's about it.
After you install the hard drive, you insert the first OS X disk in the system, boot holding the C key down (so the system boots from the disk), choose Disk Utility from the menu bar, and partition the drive. Once done, you can do the OS X installation. If you don't hold the C key down and the system wants to install OS X, after you tell it what language you want, as soon as a menu bar appears, then you can run Disk Utility.

  • Gunshy about DVD/CD-R upgrade

Forgive me, but I'm new to this...
Nevertheless, I'm lookin to purchase an external DVD Dual Layer burner to use with my G4-350(AGP) and upgrade the RAM from 256MB to 1GB. Right now I'm using OS9 and I don't want to upgrade because of my excessively old software.
Can you recommend a particular brand of DVD Burner, possibly for under $100, that would best suit my system?
I like LaCie, but I found a MCE Internal 8x DVD-/+R/RW Upgrade and a 16X Internal SuperDrive Upgrade with 8X Double/Dual Layer support for PowerMacs G5, G4 and G3; however, I don't anything about MCE.
Also, where is the best place buy RAM (3.3v unbuffered 168-pin PC100)? I'd like to get a 512MB and a 256MB to go along with the 256MB chip I have istalled

    Hi Dave
I gave Mike @ xlr8yourmac.com extensive notes on the steps involved for OS9, 10.1 & 10.2. Once PatchBurn came out the 10.2 directions became redundant, but you can still use the OS9 directions.
You can find many modded (CD-RW) files @ this xlr8yourmac.com page, and under the Faqs/DVD page..
The big issue w/ OS9 is making sure to buy a drive that is from a vendor already supported, as modding a vendor's file to suit another brand is hit or miss...
    EDIT: The OS9 directions don't seem to be on that page anymore;
The following version applies specifically to the Pioneer DVR-110, but the principal is always the same; never add or subtract any characters from the support file, just replace existing.
The extension is in System Folder/Extensions/Authoring Support Files/VendorCDR .
Vendor is replaced with whatever brand shows up under Apple System Profiler>Devices&Volumes> clicking the disclosure arrowhead in front of CDRW
Open AppleMenu>Apple System Profiler>Devices & Volumes and write down the model number of the drive exactly as it is identified by the system.
Note that although this works for most burners, it is not a guaranteed fix for non-supported drives.
    1) Install & Open HexEdit. Go to Options & make sure Overwrite Mode is NOT selected.
    2) From HexEdit/File/Open navigate to the above file. Open & "Save As" to the desktop.
    3) It is very important that nothing is added or subtracted from the file, or it will no longer function as intended. All you will be doing is substituting one set of characters for another.
If you look in the top left of the file, you will see "Len: $00001EBB" check this when you are done, if it has changed, the file will not work and you will need to start over.
    4) Scroll down to line # 00001BD0. In the right hand column, you will see DVR-103. Highlight 03, and type 10
    5) Close & save the file after checking the file length is still "Len: $00001EBB".
    6) Using the finder, navigate to the original file, and replace it with your modified file. Restart your Mac to load the new extension.
    7) Open iTunes/Edit/Preferences/Burning, and the system should think for a moment, then list your burner.

  • Processor Upgrade for iMac G3

Hello, I didn't see any particular posts specifically pertaining to the slot loading iMac (Graphite)..I hope someone can help me out.
I have a G3 Graphite iMac, upgraded RAM currently running Tiger. I used to use it but wiped it clean, re-installied the OS and created a separate account for my 8y/o son, so essentially there aren't many apps on there. For some reason it's running slower than it should, even with just Safari open. Is there a fix or possibly a processor upgrade for this model (I keep seeing that there isn't, but I want to be sure).
It's either that or constantly hearing my son complain of the lagtime and ask for our laptops instead...

According to Mactracker at one point there was a 700 MHz model available in Graphite & Snow. If you could find a 700 MHz G3 CRT iMac logic board on eBay it might be possible to upgrade the processor speed. You could also install a Matshita SR-8184 or SR-8186 DVD-ROM drive.
There's firmware available for both drives that allow them to be flashed to RPC1 or region free meaning they can play DVDs from any region in the world. Normally the drive is restricted to being able to only play Region 3 DVDs from the US. If you order a Matshita SR-8184CD optical drive from www.welovemacs.com call their 800 number listed on their website & be sure to ask for Jessica or Faith since some of the optical drives they sell don't have RPC1 firmware available for them.
